Like Many Other Groups of the Era, They Recorded Sessions at the BBC for Various Radio and TV Broadcasts and Those Sessions Are Presented on this Double CD Set. Cd1 Has all their Stunning Live-in-the-studio Radio Transmissions While Cd2 Includes the Audio from TV Show Tapings, Including an Appearance on "The Tom Jones Show" that was Misplaced for Many Years.

3 out of 5 stars Technical Flaws.......2007-07-04

Always nice to hear the Moodies. It's just so dissapointing to hear songs recorded ,what I would call, unprofessionally. Tracks ending abruptly. Fading in or out at the wrong places. Canned music, blended in, is not exciting. But, It's got a lot of great moments and brings back good memories. Voices aren't always great but I guess there wasn't a lot of material to choose from.

4 out of 5 stars Forty-one tracks for your pleasure. Are you sitting comfortably? .......2007-06-19

As the author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" and a former radio disc-jockey, I am often asked to write and or discuss various recordings from the 60's and 70's.

They earned the title "Magnificent Moodies" early on. The assemblage of the BBC tracks only further solidifies the reward. While the double package is called "Live At The BBC 67-70" there is more! The second disc is audio from TV tapings.

If you are a collector of must have Moody Blues recordings this entered the list the second it left the factory. For those that purchased some of their material in the past it will give you another side of the band. The track listings couldn't be a better representation of the collective genius from the group. Not only are the hits and radio tracks available for your enjoyment but some of the more esoteric and underrated tunes ("Best Way To Travel", "Visions Of Paradise, and "The Actor"). "Best Way To Travel" has never received the acclaim it deserves. While previously tracks were available as a bonus on special SACD pressings, this gives it to you in the full and proper dose.

Before we check out some of their superlative versions of their own material it must be written how great the cover of the Animals hit "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" was constructed.

The back-to-back combination of "Tuesday Afternoon" and "Ride My See-Saw" offers enough exquisite beauty to enthrall the harshest critic but "Lovely To See You (With the acoustic guitar sounding as if it is in your living room) could accelerate the pulse of the most docile individual.

As you sample the choice cuts don't forget to digest the short version of "Nights In White Satin" clocking in a shade over three minutes."

Could you ever get enough versions of "Gypsy"? Its inclusion here only solidifies it's golden splendor.

Forty-one tracks for your pleasure. Are you sitting comfortably?

Enjoy the music and be well,
Craig Fenton

4 out of 5 stars Good Sounding Moody Blues Stuff!!.......2007-06-12

I was waiting for this 2 cd set to come out for a long, long, time. The sound is pretty good and the song selection is excellent for the time it was recorded. At least on this BBC recording, unlike other BBC live recordings, it doe not have an announcer before each song with on occasion, a one question interview with a band member. I find that part unnecessary and am glad its not on this set. The only problem I have with this set is the editing. Moody Blues songs usually have great endings to their songs but on this release the endings are cut off and an audience applause in put in rather bluntly at times which cheapens the recordings. The sound is great for a BBC live set-average stereo but the songs seem cut off and shortened in places--- I guess to save room for other songs. This results in the whole song version not heard at times. That is probably the only thing wrong with this 2 cd set. It ought to be re-edited and the songs presented the way they were played--take out a few if you have to but lets keep the original song in. Despite this problem, I recommend this set highly. Do not let it get away. Enjoy Moody fans!!!!!!!!!! Good linear notes and pictures also.

4 out of 5 stars Historic stuff.......2007-06-01

If you have the new SACD special editions of the "core 7" original albums you've already heard most of these tracks. They were added as "special material" to those releases. However, as the other poster mentioned if you didn't want to spring the big money for albums you already own here they are, collected on two discs. The quality is no great shakes for the most part - mostly mid-range and brittle highs, but these date from over thirty years ago, and for radio to boot. The performances in many cases are a bit suspect as well; in some cases the instrumental sections sound identical to the studio versions with live vocals added. I think the Moodies did occasionally do this, considering how dense their studio recordings were it's no wonder. Other tracks however are totally live . . . they're ragged compared to the studio counterparts but have a wonderful energy that makes them a treasure on their own terms.

The studio albums are definitely the best way to acquaint one's self with these songs if you haven't already, but for the hardcore fan this is a very worthwhile release to add to the library.

5 out of 5 stars A Christmas Gift Long Overdue!.......2007-05-26

Just as I was about to post a scathing review criticising the way the BBC material was spread out among the new deluxe editions, I saw this upcoming release and smiled. It's like waking up one morning and finding a gift from some Christmas long ago that you knew was there but couldn't find. For years I have been wondering why the Moodies haven't released their BBC sessions like artists such as Hendrix, Cream, Jack Bruce, The Who, The Beatles, Zeppelin, and even Kaleidoscope have done. Then I saw that they were releasing the material but you have to buy the original albums (which most of us have done more than once)again to get it all. Finally, in one complete volume, is everything that was salvaged from the vaults. It's like the Moodies reunited completely, jumped in a time machine, and made a new album for a new millenium. I am giddy in expectation of this collection!

2 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2007-05-04

Somehow I hoped for more. I really like the Jack Johnson albumns I own, and had hoped that a live performance with these other two musicians would impress. It did not. Don't waste your money or time.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome music.......2007-03-21

This CD is a great mix of music. Although a little short, the songs are great to jam to while riding in the car. I especially love the last track-the hidden one is so funny! Gotta check it out!

5 out of 5 stars Have to have it.......2007-01-31

If you really enjoy Jack and friends for what they are, and the way the music makes you feel...this is a MUST have. If you play(even just a little bit) GREAT CD to jam along with. Nothing fancy, just the roots of all that is good. To call yourself a Jack fan and not enjoy this, I guess you just don't get it .

2 out of 5 stars Jack's Worst.......2007-01-18

Being a fan of Jack Johnson, I thought this one would be as good as the others. I wasn't impressed at all. It sounds like a few guys pickin' around in the basement. The recording quality has very little production value. At best, these are okay live versions of usually great songs. This is an unnecessary piece for your Jack Johnson collection.

4 out of 5 stars Short and sweet.......2007-01-10

Excellent selection of some of the best from these three friends (and a little Zach Gill, too!). Gives you the feeling you're sneaking into a weekend jam session at Jack's house. Fans of these guys will want to add this CD to their library. Seems to me, though, they could have easily added a few more songs and make this a full length effort.

5 out of 5 stars Impressive.......2007-05-02

This is really a classic. The orchestrated live versions of the songs just sound incredible. It's a must have for any fan of Ye.

4 out of 5 stars Brilliant, it's that simple. .......2006-05-15

This is the most amazing live hip-hop CD I have ever heard. The fact that it took a beat junkie like Ye to come up with something like this is NOT suprising in the least. It sounds a lot like the Live Portishead album of a while back. The string section does not overpower Ye and the beats, but take the songs to such a different place, it's mind blowing. The subtelty of it is amazing. I'm sure anyone checking this out is familiar with all of these songs, and this might not be up some peoples ally. But damn, It was recorded at Abby Road, you can almost hear John Lennon smile in the strings. This man will single handedly change hip-hop forever. Much like the Beatles changed pop music. Brilliant.

5 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece.......2006-05-12

Once again Kanye returns with another gem...While not an official LP this Live Album recorded in the Abbey Road Studios home of the Beatles, takes Kanye and hip hop music to a whole new dimension...

From Track 1-13 all of Kanye's hits packed into one cd played exceptionally well backed by a 17 piece orchestra (hence "Late Orchestration") and special appearances from G.O.O.D Music including John Legend, GLC, Consequence, and also Lupe Fiasco on the Hit "Touch The Sky"...

Even if your not a hip hop or R&B fan you can still appreciate the music and the production layed out by Kanye...Still not sure why he didn't release this in the U.S. but for you true Ye fans this CD is also available on DVD packed with alot of extra footage of his 5 music videos off Late Registration, interviews, and never before seen footage...

Album Description

2007 four CD box set that includes all of the British Folk legends' surviving BBC radio recordings, which were taped between 1967 and 1974. It was thought, until recently, that very few of these recordings from this time remained in the BBC's archive, but a few years ago a box was discovered on a shelf at the BBC. It is a marvelous addition to the Fairport collection and is timed to coincide with the 40th anniversary of the formation of the band The Fairports, the single best British Folk-Rock band of the late '60s, did more than any other act to develop a truly British variation on the Folk-Rock prototype by drawing upon traditional material and styles indigenous to the British Isles. While the revved-up renditions of traditional British Folk tunes drew the most critical attention, the group were also talented songwriters as well as interpreters. They were comfortable with conventional harmony-based Folk-Rock as well as tunes that drew upon more explicitly traditional sources and they boasted some of the best singers and instrumentalists of the day. 69 tracks. Universal. 2007

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars It's all here.......2007-05-08

Finally. After years of speculation Island finally amassed all of the surviving Fairport Convention BBC sessions in the handsome 4cd box set. This is basically an expanded version of the "Heyday" CD from years ago which was expanded from the original "Heyday" on Joe Boyd's Hannibal records. That entire expanded "Heyday" is here and a lot more. There is even a disc of off air recordings with Judy Dyble in vocal chair from 1967 and recordings from the "Liege and Leaf " post Sandy Denny and Richard Thompson period also. Also included is a history of the group and the sessions. I have to admit it is on the pricey side but to get the clearances and the amount of research and assistance from fans it's expected but worth it and it makes a nice gift to.

4 out of 5 stars Radio Fairport.......2007-04-25

In 1987 the Original "Heyday" was Released on Joe Boyd's Hannibal Records. Culled from BBC Radio Sessions from 1968-69, this was the Sandy Denny/Ian Matthews Version of Fairport Convention when they were known as "England's Jefferson Airplane". That Title was not a Put-Down against Fairport or The Airplane but a way to Explain this Presentation of American Music by these Fantastic English Musicians. The Songs on "Heyday" were not Featured on their early Records but the were staples of the Concerts of 1967-69. Showing another side of this Band "Heyday" featured such writers as Bob Dylan, Eric Anderson, Joni Mitchell, Richard Farina and Leonard Cohan that the British Folks ( With the exception of Dylan ) hadn't heard on their Shores Before.

In 2002 "Heyday" was Re-released and expanded to 20 tracks and Remastered to include some "Liege and Lief" material. Bootlegs were released (all two of them) of even more BBC recordings that featured Tunes from 1970-1974. It was reported that more BBC shows were out there... but, it still a shock to see a Four CD Box set available in 2007 with all this Music (69 TRACKS)!!!

Firstly all of the Expanded "Heyday" is included here, but there is so much more: a December 67 Session with Judy Dyble, the "Full House" band Live featuring the Fire of Thompson & Swarb, through to the 73-74 Sessions of the "NIne" and "Rising" Lineups. There are a lot's of Rare tracks: "Marcie", "Night in the City", "You're Gonna Need My Help", "Violets of Dawn". "The Lady is a Tramp" & "Light My Fire" that were Highlights of the Bootleg Releases.

The Sound Quality gets Rough in spots, but it still holds up because of the Wealth of Great Music presented here. This is not the Place to start if you are new to the Music of Fairport Convention, But for me I do feel Lucky to own this Amazing Little BBC boxset of Fab, Fairport Live Music...FOUR STARS~!!!

4 out of 5 stars Very Convenient Set If Not Absolutely Essential.......2007-04-24

This is a very convenient set. 4 CD's which have all the group BBC Sessions in one place. If there's a problem, it's that there isn't that much that's new for veteran fans. And of course Sandy Denny isn't on several tracks, which may discourage some. The '02 official release of 'Extended Heyday' filled many of the 'Sandy' needs for BBC Fairport stuff. Still though, the inclusion of a few new ones like the fine arrangement of Joni Mitchell's "Marcie," or oddity like Richard Thompson's fun lead on (of all things!) "The Lady is a Tramp," or the many early ones one Disc 4 are nice to see. The sound IS excellent, and notes are interesting in talking about how the recordings were made: great stuff despite (or perhaps even because of) little rehearsal time and cramped quarters. Very good IMO, if perhaps not totally essential, especially if you have all their '68-'75 material and some of the fairly available boots.

5 out of 5 stars His other live CDs are even greater........2006-09-11

This is a great Cd, but not as great as is other live CDs. So if you can't afford to buy them all, I wouldn't start with this one.

5 out of 5 stars Great Early 1970's Live Cohen..........2005-12-05

There are 3 Live Cd's in Cohen's catalogue...each with it's own strengths (I don't find weakness in Cohen, he is an unfinished project)
This is the 1st one, an import (bought mine in London) showcases Cohen touring about his Songs From A Room album...on 2 separate occasions in 1970 and in 1972..a couple of unreleased poems and the traditional country Passing Through are found besides such classics as The Story of Isaac, Bird On The Wire with laid back minor accompaniment coming from the likes of Charlie Daniels on fiddle and bass..

5 out of 5 stars Please Don't Pass me By (A Disgrace).......2002-12-03

I first heard this album, in particular, the song "Please Don't Pass Me By", back in ~ 1973. It was on a late-nite FM radio show, on a now non-existent station out of Milwaukee, WI, USA. I'll never forget that song, the emotions it drew out of my soul; shame, sympathy and anger... The whole gamete of emotions that I was capable of feeling!

Leonard Cohen's voice ripped right through my soul, stirring feelings that I found hard to control. The perfect combination of Cohen's voice and lyrics are impossible to describe in this song of Disgrace, only feelings can come close to relaying the affect it had, has, on me. I am so thankful that I was able to find this song on a CD; my Vinyl copy disappeared years ago, lent-out and never found its way back.

I highly recommend this CD to any fan of Leonard Cohen, and to fans of many of the 60's and 70's "Folk" music artists.

Although not the world's most invigorating live performer, Leonard Cohen profoundly lonely poetic masterpieces come across on stage well, in their manner. This early, often overlooked live masterwork is something that any Cohen fan will have to own. The live renditions of classics like Bird On The Wire, Story of Isaac, and Tonight Will Be Fine, etc., are competent, but not readily improved over the studio versions. On the other hand, it's the live renditions of previously unissued songs that make this album so noteworthy. Cohen's version of Passing Through has an odd sing-along ominence, and two masterpieces crop up later in the set. The first of these, the 13-minute Please Don't Pass Me By (A Disgrace) is sort of an odd narrative poem set to music, with its sing-along chorus that is undeniably profound. This is unquestionably the high point of the CD, and makes it a worthwhile purchase for Cohen fans on account of it alone. The other is Queen Victoria, a classic poem of his, performed live here-Cohen sings it in a vaguely touching way, a fitting close to the set. Although not the first album of his you should pick up, this is one you'll definately want to own after you've been primed in Leonard Cohen.

5 out of 5 stars RAW & COMPELLING.......2000-08-28

Live Songs is one of his early classics and should be part of every fan's collection. Please Don't Pass Me By with its spoken introduction is harrowing, Passing Through ("glad that I ran into you") is delicate and yearning and Tonight Will Be Fine is unsettlingly erotic. There is an intensity here that complements the studio versions very well, a side of early Cohen that fans will miss out on if they don't own this album. Some of this rawness later manifested on the Phil Spector-produced Death Of A Ladies Man to the consternation of many of Cohen's fans. But it was always a part of his musical make-up, as this album demonstrates. In some ways, Angels Of Light's album New Mother reminds me of the mood of Live Songs.

5 out of 5 stars Great live record........2007-07-07

This is a grate concert from Peter Gabriel. In my opinion his best live record so far. I recommended it to anyone who if familiar with and like Peter Gabriel early recordings.

5 out of 5 stars Great live album from Peter.......2007-03-18

The sound of this double live cd is amazing, of course, it has been enhanced in studio but the "live" feeling of beeing there is preserved.
Many songs are far better in their live version on this cd when compared to the studio ones. To name a few, "The Family Snapshot", "D.I.Y", "The Family and the fishing net", "San Jacinto", "Solsbury Hill" and "Hundrum"
The voice is incredible and the sound just shake everything in the house.
Great live performance to remember this magic concert for the Security Tour.

5 out of 5 stars The Great Homily.......2007-03-11

This album is the pinnacle of live albums in the prog rock genre.
This work is the work that all live- recording since, compare themselves to.
Gabriel along with old school peers like Bowie were and still are masters of the Live-performance. And the new breed of masters, like Tool, learned it all here.

3 out of 5 stars An intriguing but often bland live album.......2006-10-21

So far, Peter Gabriel has released two live albums. The first is PLAYS LIVE, which features songs from Gabriel's first four albums (all of which were self-titled, though they have all been given frequently-used nicknames: CAR, SCRATCH, MELT, and SECURITY). The second is SECRET WORLD LIVE, which features songs from Gabriel's fifth and sixth albums, SO and US, as well as a few tunes from other Gabriel recordings. PLAYS LIVE was recorded in 1982 during the SECURITY tour, and released the following year. After the live recording, Gabriel took the recordings into his studio and tweaked them a little. Is this irritating? A little, but it seems more unnecessary than irritating. (At least Gabriel freely admits to tweaking the tunes in the CD booklet.) Regardless of the tweaking, PLAYS LIVE is a lively album that presents some very interesting - and occasionally superior - performances of Gabriel faves.

None of the live performances are bad, though "Solsbury Hill" does lose a lot of its strength when infused with synthesizers. Most of them are quite good, and a few are superior to their studio originals. One such song is "Intruder". The live version adds a little weirdness to the tune, but takes out much of the chillyness from the studio version; still, the PLAYS LIVE version is probably the best. Also, the live version of "The Family And The Fishing Net" is considerably better than the studio version.

Inexplicably, the rest of the songs lose much of their power when performed live. The only other song that really sticks out is "I Go Swimming", available exclusively on this CD. "I Go Swimming" is one of Gabriel's most fun songs and possibly one of his best. What really keeps PLAYS LIVE going is the interesting arrangements of the Gabriel faves - different instruments, new instrumental sections, lyrics sung differently, etc. Still, none are really knockouts, save for the aforementioned tunes.

If you're a big-time Gabriel fan, you'll want to check out this CD. Otherwise, spend your money purchasing his studio albums. PLAYS LIVE is consistently intriguing, but it often feels bland and rarely excites. (Steer clear of the HIGHLIGHTS version, released in 2002 as part of the remastered Gabriel catalogue. The HIGHLIGHTS version deletes six of the album's tracks, most of which were among the best on the album.)

5 out of 5 stars Uplifting and disturbing.......2005-06-10

This live CD by Peter Gabrial is quite amazing. It is a collection of his very best performances from this tour. The songs are all highly spiritual yet sometimes dark in tone. That is the genius of this collection. If you want to be inspired in a new way I highly recommend this CD. It is uplifting and disturbing at at the same time.

5 out of 5 stars hard ,drivin' fun........2007-04-26

Bought this album ,used for a $ 1.00 in 1976. I was 18, played the he-- out of it, have the album cover in my music room, decided I needed the re-mixed CD version.. WOW, does this bring back memories, enjoy, be amused, be confused, shake your head in wonderment or disgust ,air guitar like no one is watching, who knows with this band , is it good ? is it bad ? are they strange ,,YES.. who knows.. its 1974...."Queen" opened for them for 2 years before this came out, they broke up 6 weeks after its release..there is a whole story written in the jacket about the 2 live concerts disc 1- New york, 2- London. keep in mind during the end of disc 2 the Mgm't is trying to stop the concert and lower curtains and stuff and the band keeps playing, ..utter chaos..ahh the good old days !!
Here comes a purely nostalgic, hard driving, return to the past,if hard driving rock and roll is your thing and you've never heard Mott, listen in their entirety to songs 9 & 10 on disc 2, you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Mott the Dog 210th year Anniversary Edition.......2006-04-29

At last; a proper release for this masterpiece of a live album in tribute to one of the great rock'n'roll bands of the mid-seventies . Mott the Hoople "Live" was originally released in 1974 , but because of time restraints, only part of two concerts were put out as the first vinyl bound release . This consisted of five songs from a concert of their week long residency at the Uris theatre Broadway May 1974, and three songs from their end of tour Christmas gigs 1973 , at London's Hammersmith Odeon, hardly satisfactory . As none of the songs ran in order , there were two songs midway through each side "Rose" and "Rest In Peace " which were used in the sets to give the members of the band a bit of a breather from all the leaping about, neither side had an opening number , and side one ended with a truncated version of the final encore, whilst side two closed with the end of the set proper, so although there were plenty of flashes of excitement , nothing like the full thing.
Here you get the both concerts ( Unfortunately there was a recording glitches at Hammersmith and we lose " Hymn For The Dudes " and "All The Way From Memphis" , and time constraints meant one song had to be culled from the Broadway show and Ariel Bender's solo track " Here Comes The Queen '' was left off which is a shame , but not really a Mott The Hoople number anyway.) in their proper running order .The results are simply devastating .
At this time ( Late 73 to early 74.) Mott The Hoople were probably the Number One live act in the world , Led Zeppelin were having their troubles ,The Beatles had long gone, The Rolling Stones were going through their " Black and Blue" period, Black Sabbath were doing their Los Angeles thing, David Bowie had split up the Spiders from Mars , Deep Purple were not sure who was in the band and who wasn't. So the field was wide open and Mott grabbed it with both hands . Touring both the Britain and America with a fledgling Queen in support they took no prisoners . Their last album " The Hoople " had just smashed it's way into the top twenty on both sides of the Atlantic , whilst their fifth hit single " The Golden Age Of Rock'n' Roll " was firmly entrenched in the top ten of the singles charts worldwide .They looked " The Business" -they were obviously it,seemingly without trying . They appeared as an agglomeration of bright colours , bizarre shapes , scarves , leather , sunglasses, velvet , huge boots , strange felt hats, blending seamlessly into masses of hair, beer bottles , battered guitar cases covered with stickers and that added something, SWAGGER, they exuded attitude, easy humour and the utter confidence born of knowing your the best. They had within the last year acquired the services of one of the greatest rock'n' roll guitarists to ever draw breath , the marvellously moniker Ariel Bender ( Previously known as Luther Grosvenor of Spooky Tooth fame ) who could not only play the guitar like a ringin' the bell, but also threw the most magnificent shapes , throwing his guitar behind his back , or in the air ,as he did it , being the perfect foil for the menacing leader of the band Ian Hunter , who stood centre stage glaring out at the audience behind his shades daring them not to get out of their seats and cause a riot. Also in the line-up was the originator of all the weird and wonderful clothes worn by all those people who followed in glam rock, Bass player Overend ( Pete ) Watts, Overend used to daily spray paint his long hair silver and virtually be winched onto stage such was the height of his platform boots, behind the drums was the mercurial Dale ( Buffin) Griffin, who when he wasn't hit his chosen instruments as hard as he could he would be scattering them across the stage with well aimed kicks , in total contrast on the piano forte' was Mr Morgan Fisher rockin' his heart out wearing a white piano keyboard suit, with a floppy bow tie , tifter on his head, and a perfectly groomed handle bar moustache adorning his upper lip.
Then there was the music , even with Queen as support there was never any doubt who the headline act was , Mott would swing relentlessly on stage , and go unstoppably into their show every night . The Intro from Holtz's Jupiter from "The Planets" was the intro theme to prelude the celebration of Rock'n' Roll that was to follow , On Broadway they did a clever little opening with Ian Hunter singing the opening bars of Don MacLean's American Pie , backed only by Morgan Fishers tinkling piano, but when it gets to the line " The day that music died " Overend Watts steps up to ask the crowd " Or did it" where upon the whole band breaks into a thundering version of " The Golden Age Of Rock'n' Roll " complete with over the top sonic guitar solo from Ariel Bender . Over both concerts there are too many highlights to mention them all , but "Hymn for the Dudes'' and Hunter's mini Rock Opera about the music business with the immortal lines ' These wires are tight' "Marionette" are particular highlights from the Broadway shows, and the final Rock'n' Roll medley from the Hammersmith Odeon with its pieces of Mott classic's along side snippets from the Beatles , Jerry Lee Lewis and David Bowie are unforgettable, with Ariel Bender laying down some volcanic guitar over every song , and Ian Hunter playing Ringmaster to the crowd throughout the concerts .
This two CD package comes beautifully encased in a cardboard and plastic Digi-pack with all the original sleeve notes , plus a new booklet and an eight hundred word essay by Brian May of Queen , which is worth the price of the package on it's own. If you want to hear how rock'n'roll should be played buy this package .
My only regret is that no body had the sense to film either of these events , so we could have a visual record of Mott The Hoople live , at the peak of their powers .
Mott the Dog.
Mott the Hoople.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting for Mott-o-philes.......2006-03-21

I've always liked the original release of this live album from Mott the Hoople, but this goes a bit farther, presenting the complete recordings from two different dates and venues. The new songs from the Broadway venue include: Born Late 58, One of the Boys, Hymn for the Dudes, Marionette, and a medley of Driving Sister / Crash Street Kids / Violence. The new songs from the Hammersmith gig include: Driving Sister, Sucker, Sweet Jane, Roll Away the Stone, All the Young Dudes, and Walking With a Mountain. If you are following me, there are some songs that appear in two versions: Driving Sister, Violence, Sucker, All the Young Dudes, and Walking with a Mountain. Good news: some of the new stuff is a delight to hear, particularlly Marionette and Hymn for the Dudes. Bad news: I can see why drummer Dale Griffin left some of these off the original release; Ian Hunter's singing is occasionally flat, and the band is somewhat sloppy compared to a live concert from today. But I suspect that this release is closer to the actual performance than a lot of live recordings done now (with endless studio overdubs). And these boys sure could ROCK!!! So if you want a powerful live document of Mott the Hoople, warts and all, circa 1974, this is for you!

4 out of 5 stars Live Mott, wish I saw the concert(s).......2006-02-10

Any classic rock fan, especially the fans who love "live" classic rock would enjoy this special release. The more you play it, the more you will like it. I also recommend Ian Hunter's "Welcome To The Club", another live release with Mick Ronson. You won't be disappointed with either release. Play it LOUD !

4 out of 5 stars pretty good end of the line mott the hoople.......2005-02-24

this was recorded late in the life of mott the hoople (without original members mick ralphs and verden allen) and it's pretty good as live albums go. ian hunter's in fine form and the cd has 13 additional tracks not on the original lp. mott disbanded shortly after it was released in 1974. if you're new to mott the hoople try "ALL THE YOUNG DUDES" or "MOTT" first.

The Housemartins, one of the most popular Indie Band from 1985-1986 with sounds comparible to early Smiths, Aztc Camera and folky Billy Bragg with a political message in the lyrics. This Album displays their ability to perform Live as well as richly layer live acapella. Many new versions never heard before include on the LP. A must for all Beautiful South fans, Paul Heaton fans alike. First timers start with Best of... or London 0 Hull 4. Throughout the album Paul Heaton shows off his great pipes and bravado, the band holds up well. "Caravan" is the Best Leftist Gospel you'll ever hear.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent album........2007-05-21

A must have CD for any Camel fan. This is the definitive version of "A Snowgoose." The performance is first rate. The first CD is excellent as well. I disagree with other reviewers that feel that this set is too much like the studio cuts. The performances are unique and enjoyable. Mel Collins is an excellent musician. This CD is worth the higher import price.

5 out of 5 stars LIGHT IT UP.......2007-05-09

The first time I heard Camel was in 1974, driving around Athens, Ga. The song was Nimrodel/The White Rider, one of their finest songs. I thought it was haunting and beautiful and I still think so. But as the late Peter Bardens says in the intro, their magnum opus is definitely "The Snow Goose," and it is played and produced maybe even better on this record than the original. In fact, all you need is "A Live Record." It has almost every great song Camel did in their prime and the recording will make you feel like you're right there at Royal Albert Hall. I pulled out "Mirage" and may never listen to it again because the great songs on that record are even better on the live version. Andy Lattimer's guitar throughout "Snow Goose" is electrifying, and this poignant score is brought to life with amazing clarity and firepower. It is unique in the genre. When I heard "Snow Goose" with a friend right after it came out we were both crying in our beer by the end. The first CD is very good but this record is really all about "Snow Goose" and the London Symphony add a great deal, though a few Camel purists may disagree. There are glitches, such as "Raindances," which sounds muted. But beginning with "Lady Fantasy" late on the first CD and ending with "Another Night" on CD Two you're getting 80 minutes of some of the best played and recorded progressive rock music on a live stage ever. And the other 55 minutes aren't bad either. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars The classic Camel days.......2007-04-29

When I was young, I saw Camel live and bought several of their record albums. Years later I was able to find some of their stuff on CD, but missed their live sound. The disk Pressure Points came toward the end, after a change in personel and sound. I was thrilled when I discovered this import double disk. It contains the entire Snow Goose album (with orchestra backing), plus all those songs I had seen them play. The recording is of very good quality and the collection of material is first rate. So why not 5 stars? The price for an import is a bit steep. Try Snow Goose or Moonmadness or Mirage to see if you are "into" jam rock at its 70s best. If you find you like their sound, you won't be sorry buying this live set.

5 out of 5 stars Better than the original vinyl in every way.......2005-12-28

My original vinyl import still sounds great. But this CD reissue is incredible. More songs. Terrific sound quality. I'm sure to be annoying the kids just like I did my folks with this album turned up so loud it hurts...

5 out of 5 stars Greatest Camel discs!.......2005-11-25

These are 2 discs that are jam-packed with top-notch live Camel music. Everything from the original release is here plus more than a mere smidgeon of other unreleased tunes from the same concerts. Great collection of their Bardens-era music. The entire epic Snow Goose suite is here plus a number of previously unreleased stuff. Can't be beat. Get it. now.
