I agree with P. Grupe-for classical music lovers, it is a let down to listen to cut tracks of well-performed classical greats, like Chopin's 1st piano concerto in this collection. Nonetheless, this is a terrific compilation for people beginning to get interested in classical music. This compilation is an eclectic mix of the familiar (Beethoven's moonlight sonata, Rachmaninov's Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini variation no. 18, Myer's Cavatina, Barber's "Adagio for Strings, etc.), the contemporary (Michael Nyman's The Promise, Horner's My Heart Will Go On), and the truly moving (Bach's Double Violin Concerto, Bruch's Violin Concerto, Schubert's String Quintet in C)-relatively obscure pieces usually left out in less inspired and mediocre classical music compilations. It is gratifying to see that opera music has not been left out. Get this cd if only for the Maria Callas tracks, Lucia Popp's performance of Strauss' Beim Schlafengehen, and Dame Kiri Te Kanawa's Addio del passato.

I am an avid listener of classical music, and I purchased this CD expecting to get some of the best classical music ever composed. I guess I expected a bit much though. Although the recording is filled with high quality performances of fantastic pieces, I was disappointed to find that only about half of the pieces are contained in their entirety on this 2-disc set. Songs such as Rhapsody in Blue and Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata were not recorded in full for this album, which caught me off guard and bothered me quite a bit.

Anybody who is unfamiliar with classical music will appreciate this album. Since it features some of the most moving classical pieces ever written, it is sure to entrance listeners. And by not placing entire 10-minute pieces on the CDs, it will not run on and bore those unaccustomed to the length of most classical music. However, if you are already well-versed in classical music and can listen to entire symphonies with ease, I would advise against buying this album. I now feel a desire to go out again and find the full versions of some of these pieces, since I feel I was cheated by only getting introductions or short movements on most of the album. Guess I should have paid a little more attention to what I was buying.

Most of the musical pieces in this compilation are from versions as they appear in various movies. This is Classical music from classic movies such as: Somewhere in Time, Schindler's List, English Patient, The Piano, Platoon, et al. But make no mistake; the music is what's really worth mentioning here.

The title says it all. It claims to have "the most moving Classical music of all time," and they certainly have a case, as it is chock full of the kind of emotional pieces that can easily bring you to tears. This double CD compilation with 37 passionately beautiful pieces is a steal at $16.99.

If you've ever recorded your favorite songs on to tape, or burned them on to a CD, you'll see that this compilation is exactly what EMI Records has done. It is like a greatest hits, volume 1, of poignant Classical music. Almost all of the musical pieces are classic favorites, though there are a few contemporary ones also.

I found the music on this CD powerful and moving as advertised, and I think that Classical music fans should truly enjoy it. It is well worth the price it's being sold for, and I highly recommend it.

It's not that I hate opera, it's rather that I cannot handle and entire opera without nodding off. This 4 disc CD provides highlights from the most famous and recognizable arias, i.e., Pagliacci, Carmen, Rigoletto, Madame Butterfly, La Boheme, The Mikado, and H.M.S. Pinafore -- just to mention a few. I appreciate the ability to enjoy select arias from some of the most beautiful and and exceptional operas in the world, and played by first class orchestras, without having to sit through the entire opera.

This is a really fabulous collections of songs. There is a great balance of old and new. This isn't a collection from one single genre and the diversity keeps the mix interesting. It's great to hear songs that wouldn't normally be noticed while a movie is playing and it's also great to hear those easily recognizable tunes from popular movies.

Once again, I purchased this double CD with a fair amount of hesitation, since I had been hearing for years stories about how high Tommy and Glenn usually were, about Tommy's overdose and consequent loss of sensitivity in his fretting arm, about how bad this incarnation of the band was during that last tour... You know what I mean, right? Finally, and after listening to the samples available, my curiosity overcame my doubts and I decided to purchase it.

And after listening to it carefully, I can honestly say that it was well worth it, and that most of the talk about Tommy's lackluster performance is unjustified: if he was having a rough night, I can't imagine how good he must have been when he wasn't high. That's not to say that this is perfect or the most fundamental DP listening experience ever, but I think that at least for those who, like me, enjoy(ed) "Come Taste the Band", this is a great addition. Narcotic tales aside, the band sounds very good on the 7 songs they play off that record, which is something that totally makes sense.

My favorites are exactly the same ones as on CTTB: "I need Love" (even though the song proves to be quite a struggle for Coverdale), "This Time around/Owed to G" and "You Keep on Moving", all of them AWESOME tunes, played with lots of passion and feel. Maybe the only things that are a little distracting are David (mostly) and Glenn's sometimes off key screams while trying to reach some of the higher notes. Actually, that is the reason why I chose this instead of the "King Biscuit Flower Hour/ Foxbat" set, since the samples that I heard really spooked the heck out of me!!! I don't know what happened over the course of the 2 months that separate those two concerts, but you can certainly hear the difference between a good night and a bad one... Oh boy...anyway, other tracks that stand out for me are the long version of "Getting tighter", "Love Child", and "Drifter".

So why 4 and not 5 stars,though? Because there are a few glitches: Being a massive DP fan, I don't particularly appreciate it when my favorite music is messed up, or like in this case, "underplayed": the inclusion of just a snippet of "Soldier of Fortune" is a big disappointment to me, since it is one of my favorite songs and I would have loved to hear it in full; the inclusion of "Lady Luck" over "Coming Home" is criminal, if you ask me, since the latter is one of the best tracks off CTTB; Tommy's solo is not really a solo, but rather a 7 minute strumming excursion on guitar; but above all, the biggest "BUT" here are the versions of MK II and MKIII material, especifically 3 of my favorite DP songs: "Burn" basically goes over guitar-less, and while the liner notes on the CD claim that it was due to technical problems, I have reservations about that claim, and it's a major let down for me; "Stormbringer" is unnecessarily expanded and lacks the punch of the Mk III versions, and "Highway Star" is a little too much of a loose jam for my taste (something that was already happening during the "Stormbringer" tour, so I'm not blaming it on this lineup exclusively). And how come they didn't play "Woman from Tokio" in full, as opposed to just use a snipet of it during Jon Lord's solo? I mean, if you're gonna do something wrong, you better do it right! If they were gonna play Mk II material anyway, what could've been better than playing that song while being IN TOKIO??? However, the band does a pretty respectable job on "Smoke on the Water"(maybe they play it a little safe, but I like it nevertheless) and the mostly instrumental "Lazy", which pretty much shines as a jam.

Ultimately, all of those things are minor quibbles for a truly heroic performance, which is mostly carried over by the spectacular performances of founding members Ian Paice and Jon Lord (moreso on the older Mk II and Mk III material than anywhere else), who undoubtedly steal the show, coming to the forefront in the absence of Ritchie, and to fill the gaps left by Tommy. As individual performers, you might find flaws in these performances (especially on Tommy's), but as a whole, Deep Purple on a bad day were ages ahead of the average band, and Paice and Lord really impress throughout. I would highly recommend this set for the hardcore DP fan and for MK IV aficionados, but not to the casual listener who knows only the hits, since chances are you might end up disappointed.

Hello- this concert is an pretty good show for DEEP PURPLE (david, ian, glenn, jon) but tommy bolin seems to be having an off night (what guitar great has not had a bad show ? )but there is a light at the end of tommy's tunnel, that is "WILD DOGS". i have always loved this song, especialy check out the early l.a. demo of "WILD DOGS" on "TOMMY BOLIN ARCHIVES VOL. 1" (it is almost better than the version on TEASER) anyway. tommy shines on this version. it makes this cd set worth the price.

The remastered version of Last Concert in Japan 1975 which had been rushed out quickly as a single EMI released - LP in 1977. this double CD set includes some unreleased songs that weren?t involved in the old vinyl release. Tommy Bolin?s guitar playing is amazing and he was on fire at night. Martin Birch the old time DP soundengineer had mixed up the LP very numb and avoided any guitar distortions what Bolin played. This double cd set reminds us as a small brother of the success of Made in Japan 1972.

Musically DP have more nice composition. but Roger Glover doesn?t want DP to be a trend. he said we?ll never be a trend, we are not into pop celebs. we?re just a natural group. Glenn Hughes said the same thing that he is just only a natural singer, who composed the songs that had happened to his life.

PS: Coldplay is a lovely band of many celebs but also the most detested band by the heavy rock fans.....

4 out of 5 stars domo arigato Tokyo 1975 !!.......2006-03-04

the gig was fired by Tommy Bolin's energy. It was 15 Dec 1975 live at the Budokan Hall in JAPAN. Deep purple met their 12.000 strong crowd that night. The band brought a new guitar player Tommy Bolin (who took over the shoes of Ritchie Blackmore in 1975). The result is fantastic here, you may listen the thundering songs from Burn until the mayhem Highway star. You will never loose the Deep Purple raw and strong energy on the japanese stage. Some Deep purple Mk II fans will appreciate this live cd. THIS TIME AROUND can be comparable with MAde In japan 1972. Need I say more?

A good album with a lot of songs from the great Come Taste the Band. The stars went to Jon and Ian, which had a great performance. Tommy is the problem. He played bad, mssing notes and with no inspiration.

A dream come true for the true bebop enthusiast. Supersax was a hell of a band, and the idea of playing some of the best Bird's solos reharmonized for 5 saxophones is damn good. To say this correctly you can hear in the beginning of each track the full Bird solo, which usually was short (due to the recording limits of the era) and than you can hear 8 or 9 minutes of be bop blowing from the men in Supersax (Nimitz, Flory, Marsh, Hanna etc) and from Frank Rosolino the best trombone playing ever. Each tune is streached out at its limits for great listening fun. This is bop how it should be played, with no time restrictions, energy, abandon, and passion for the music. This one is the first part of a double live recording (you can find this same review in Supersax Japan part 2). The list is pure be bop with few standards which entered in the history of jazz like Bird's stuff (Just friends from the Bird with strings album for example). Really, Bird solos was so unforgettable that someone soon or later had to think to this idea of playing them as classic compositions, reharmonized for a small ensemble. Not to mention the solos from the men in Supersax and from Rosolino. They're really close to the ones from the masters tributed here (not only Bird, Diz and Monk too). Hope Capitol records soon will reissue the first three albums from Supersax that were unbelievable like this one.

    Another should-have unreleased archive live recording of Gong,after two key members Daevid Allen and Gilli Smyth had already jumped ship.However,check this out:guitarist Steve Hillage had apparently rejoined the cosmic Gong clan for a brief tour.This is a very good quality(don't know why several others I've spoken with gripe about the sound quality)audio document of the gig the band had played on November 25,1975 at Nottingham University.Interesting setlist,to say the least."Master Builder" and the awesome 12-minute "Isle Of Everywhere" comes off of their 1974 landmark lp 'You',then the cuts "Chandra","Cat In Clark's Shoes"(really enjoyed this verion),the jazzy "Shamal" and "Wingful Of Eyes" are off the 1976 'Shamal' album.Finally,"Aftaglid" and the trippy "Salmon Song" were originally on Hillage's first solo work 'Fish Rising'.Not all Gong fans will exactly flip over this CD.Do keep in mind that Hillage does a fine job of covering for both Allen and Smyth's absence.Line-up:Steve Hillage:guitarist&vocals,Mike Howlett-bass&vocals,Didier Malherbe-flute&sax,Pierre Moerlen-drums,Miquette Giraudy-vocals,Patrice Lemoine-keyboards and Jorge Pinchevesky-violin.Recommended.

    POOR SOUND QUALITY KNOCKS THIS DOWN A STAR

    This is a concert from Gong's 1975 tour. It is 78 minutes and the tracks range from 7 to 16 minutes long. There are some nice liner notes about what the band was up to at the time.

    The sound quality on this CD is fair to poor. The main problem is in the high end, especially the saxophone. The mix is also not very good. The sound seems to get better later in the CD. It isn't as bad as some live albums, like Black Sabbath Live at Last, King Crimon's Epitath or Hawkwind's Early Daze. It isn't so bad that you wouldn't want to listen to it. On the plus side there is little audience noise. It some respects, it is actually better than some modern live CD's, like anything by Dave Matthews.

    However, at the high price of this CD, it makes it a toss up if it is worth buying.

    This is Gong in transition (although Gong has always been in transition...it is even more so now). Daevid Allen and Gilli Smyth left the group. This is time when the group was moving from progressive/space rock to British progressive jazz. Steve Hillage was starting to go solo and Pierre Moerlin was about to take over the group.

    This is a big band. It includes "original" Gong members like Dedier Malhabe on sax and flute, Mike Howlett on bass, members of what would become the new Gong, like Moerlen, and musicians that would follow Hillage in his solo career.

    The band is completely different without Allen. There are very little vocals and there are none of the strange songs or anything about pot head pixies. The band is heavy into pure space music, with a little jazz thrown in.

    What I enjoy most is the Shamal material. This is the first time I have heard most of it live. It is new and refreshing.

    The older Gong material has been played to death on many, many other live albums. But, the versions here are still good and a little bit different from what has been released before.

    There are two numbers from Hillage's Fish Rising album. They are also interesting, but I think you can get better versions (especially with better sound) on the Hillage live CD's live Live Herald or Live at the BBC.

    The CD ends as the audience is calling the band back for encore. It makes me wonder if this was more to this show that wasn't included. With such a big band, you would think that they would probably want to play longer than just 78 minutes.

    There is an EP CD called Paragong that features most of this band. It is just over 20 minutes long, but it is fantastic. It is a must have, if you can find it.

    3 out of 5 stars Really would give 3.5 stars.......2005-09-17

    First let me say this is a very nice cd in alot of ways... however there are some sound quality issues which detract from my total enjoyment...let me explain...One thing is that this is a very "bright" sounding cd... the high frequencies are too much... I use my equalizer to modify all the high frequencies way down...Another maybe worse thing is that whenever the music gets very loud or the vocals are sung loudly there is some noticeable distortion in both...not horrible but you will notice it especially as you turn your stereo up louder... Ok those 2 items aside...which I can live with.. the music and performances on this cd are very good and worth purchasing... especially if you are a Steve Hillage fan as his guitar work shines in the concert and on Aftaglid and Salmon Song in particular...for me the You era Gong songs and Steve's solo songs are the real reason to buy here as they stand above the Shamal Gong songs...bottom line if you are already a Gong fan and want to buy a concert of a rather unique transitional time in the Gong legacy you should find this enjoyable.. for anyone looking for some live Gong in general I would not start here..

    This complete 12-disc survey of The Psalms of David from St. Paul's Cathedral is both a remarkable historical record of Anglican chant at its finest and an astonishing musical experience. Contained here are all 150 psalms in their traditional English garb from the 1549 Book of Common Prayer, with revised or entirely new musical settings as published in The New St. Paul's Cathedral Psalter, edited by the choir's musical director John Scott, itself a revision of the 1875 Cathedral Psalter. As such, these recordings represent the very backbone of the Anglican liturgy, but even a casual listener will be in no doubt that they also offer music that is both contemplative and richly varied when removed from its liturgical context.

    The art of "pointing"--or setting--psalm texts has been essayed by many English composers, from William Croft through the Wesleys and William Boyce in earlier times to the great flowering in the late 19th century under Stainer and Barnby, with further contributions from Parry, Stanford, Elgar, Howells, and a host of choirmasters and organists, including Sir David Willcocks and John Scott himself. All are represented here. Recorded throughout in the vast acoustic of their cathedral, the St. Paul's choristers enunciate the words precisely, backed by inventive though unobtrusive organ accompaniment. Taken individually, it's possible to isolate moments when the choir seem to drag their feet or fail to give due weight to the words (Psalm 125, "They that put their trust in the Lord," seems far too subdued, for example), and the massive Psalm 119 is awkwardly split across discs 10 and 11, but overall this set is nothing less than a document of invaluable cultural and musical significance. --Mark Walker

    In our view the changes in pointing, and excellent selection of chants, give deeper meanings to the Psalms than those achieved in the "standard?" Parish Psalter.

    We found great Spirituality and a wonderful sense of Worship whilst listening to this set. This is often sacrificed for brilliance of musical performance in other recordings.

    Unfortunately the "St.Paul's Psalter" is not available (June 2007) but we are told that a new print run may happen within 12 months. This would be a most valuable companion to the recordings when and if it becomes available.

    This grand undertaking deserves high praise, and I'm struck, listening to chant after chant, how much Anglican chant as it used to be until the changes of the 70s was one of the great Victorian contributions to English life and art. For anyone who wants to hear almost the entire repertoire of Anglican chant deployed in singing the whole book of Psalms, this is an unrivalled source. It is wonderful, too, to hear the Coverdale translation: you realize what the churches have lost by abandoning the proper & regular singing of the Psalms. So one is immensely grateful to Hyperion for putting out this recording. It's not perfect, though.

    The rhythmic pacing, though a little slow for my taste, is steady and sensitive, the diction clear, and the organ accompaniment superb (Providing an expressive accompaniment to a choir singing in 4-part free rhythm, and improvising descants to the melody at the same time, isn't easy). And of course there's the cavernous acoustic of St. Paul's, very impressive in the more thunderous psalms. Unfortunately, though, the "forward" style favored for the St. Paul's boys produces a sound that's unpleasantly chesty in the lower registers and reedy in the higher ones. The poorly integrated choral sound caused by this kind of voice-production can be downright unpleasant for anyone used to, or trained in, the classic English choral style. In fact, one has to wonder why this choir was chosen for such a huge project: even allowing for the near-universal decline in standards of vocal training for boys in England, better sounds than this can still be heard.

    5 out of 5 stars What can you say?.......2003-01-03

    I almost hate to criticize this terrific thing. After all, where else can you get all 150 Psalms in a single collection sung by one of the world's great choirs?

    How much do I like it? I bought it *twice*. I originally bought all the CDs separately, before they came out with a single boxed set. They were stolen from my car (and, God willing, maybe they converted some poor thief to Anglican Cathedral Music and got him into church). After they were stolen, I immediately bought them again.

    One of the great pleasures of life is listening to the Morning and Evening Psalms while driving to and from work, and making listening a regular feature of Morning and Evening Prayer.

    So what's the criticism? The sound is a bit muddy, so the words can be rather difficult to understand without reading along (which is a real problem when driving), and personally, I prefer the Psalter from the 1979 BCP instead of the old one, from the Great Bible. But that's unreasonable. They ARE a British choir after all. Those are the only criticisms.

    Anyhow, if you have a taste for choral cathedral music, this is genuinely indispensible. St. Paul's has given the world a great blessing.
