Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great compilation.......2002-05-10

I don't actually own this particular compilation, however, since I own nearly every recording represented on these discs...I think I'm qualified to comment. This is a wonderful representation of the high quality of work that DRG Records does.
The previous review is way off the mark. This is definitely not a waste of time or money. This is 25 years of preserving Broadway shows, Off-Broadway shows, studio recordings (mostly from the city center concerts), etc. So what if they "aren't as good as the original", DRG is preserving many recordings and artists that other mainstream labels don't or won't. You have wonderful recordings from Brian Stokes Mitchell, Nathan Lane, Debbie Gravitte, Tyne Daly, Anthony Perkins, Joanna Gleason, Marin Mazzie, Carol Burnett, Heather Headley, Patti LuPone, Barbara Cook, etc., and many of these are from Original Cast Recordings just as they appeared on Broadway. This is an excellent sampler of the work going on at DRG. No...I'm not an employee...just an avid listener and collector of theatre recordings.

1 out of 5 stars A disappointment.......2001-12-15

There's a reason you've probably never heard of most of the songs and shows on this album, not to mention most of the artists. This is a second-rate collection of second-rate numbers performed by mostly second-rate artists. In the case of the shows that were revivals, the performances on the original cast recordings were better. Don't waste your money.

A roaring testament to Ely's vitality on stage, this set marries strong lyric-centered material with a protopunk country attitude. The alchemy is volatile, and Ely has never quite harnassed such power again. His timely association with The Clash was probably the inspiration he needed: he reworked classic material--"Me and Billy the Kid," "Letter to L.A." and "Bluebird," featuring the harmony of Butch Hancock--and squeezed the utmost energy from every song. His band--featuring Jimmy Petit, Davis McLarty, and David Grissom--was stripped down but rocked harder because of it, and Ely sang like he'd never get another chance. Believe it: This is one of the most exhilarating live albums, ever. --Roy Francis Kasten

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Joe Ely is Texas Music.......2006-05-19

This is a great album, much less an awesome live album. the recording and production quality is excellent, which is my biggest gripe with live releases.

Joe is a Texas Institution. One reviewer wrote the south's Bruce Springsteen. I agree in many ways, but Joe needs no comparison - he was jammin honky tonks when E Street was released. I much prefer Joe to Bruce, although I'm not knocking Bruce.

A great singer/songwriter who pays homage to his contemporaries such as the excellent duet on this CD with Butch Hancock. He does awesome renditions of other Texas musicians Jimmy Dale Gilmore (Saturday Night) and Rober Earl Keen (The Road Goes on Forever) on other albums as well.

This album was recorded before David Grissom left to join John Mellencamp. Fortunately he also found his way back. Grissom was a whiz kid when he joined Joe during the era of this album. It is worth buying if only for the excellent second lead in Letter to L.A. that is not on Lord of the Highway. Grissom adds lead Guitar prominance to the album that stands on it's own. If you like the guitar work here also check out Storyville.

I have seen these guys on stage together and apart. Grissom and Ely onstage together is better than the sum of the parts. I highly recommend this album to anyone who enjoys straight up guitar jams with excellent songwriting.

5 out of 5 stars One Of The Greatest Live Albums Ever, Seriously!!!!!.......2004-11-02

Joe Ely's live shows during the late 80's through the 90's are somewhat of a legend. If you were lucky enough to catch him live during that time, you know what I mean. Blistering and intense, a how-to on kickin' a** live. I was lucky enough, and I have seen many shows before and since (from the Stones to Willie and all in between) and NOTHING compares to Joe Ely. This album captures that energy like few live albums ever do. This is Texas Roadhouse Rock at its finest. From country to americana to staight up rock, and ROCK IT DOES!!!!!! 'Cool Rockin Loretta' (a Texas favorite), 'She's Gotta Get To Gettin', 'Are you Listen, Lucky?', are much better live than they were on any studio recording. My favorites are BBQ and Foam, Row Of Dominoes, and Letter to LA. There is just something about this album that defies any genre or style. YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED, GUARANTEED!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Hands Down, The Best Live Rock 'n Roll Album Ever!!!.......2002-04-01

Hard rocking honkytonk music of the highest order. Joe led the tightest 4-piece combo on the planet & had the smarts to employ the most evocative guitarist to come along since Duane Allman died (David Grissom). Then he gave him room to cut loose - solos, fills, & riffs straight out of Heaven! "Letter to L.A." alone is worth the price of the CD - seriously! "Row of Dominoes" & "Cool Rockin' Loretta" are too, for that matter. But although he lets Grissom shine, it's never to the detraction of the rest of the band. The solos are always riding the groove and interplaying with the other instruments, while always being built upon the melody & emotion of the song. There's something more than just playing music here-this band has achieved symbiosis.
Ely's bandleading skills cannot be underestimated at this point-under his direction, the band has a command of dynamics to rival Van Morrison's (you can't go higher than that!). Great songs, wonderful audience interaction, & a generous amount of playing time - over an hour - make for a complete CD package.
Be forewarned though, this is more of a headphones album - NOT background music. There's so much going on, it demands your attention or else you might not get the gist. But trust me, it's worth devoting your whole attention to.

4 out of 5 stars Joe Ely Brings Down the House.......2001-02-10

This live album returned Joe Ely in fine style to MCA after a six year absence from the label which saw him record two albums for the Hightone label. As a result, Joe Ely and band were not promoting a new album. His last for Hightone was Dig All Night in 1988 and only "Grandfather Blues" comes from that album. He does, however, include four tracks from 1987's Lord of the Highway, including a powerful solo acoustic rendition of "Me and Billy the Kid" and a scorching version of "Are You Listening Lucky?"

To date, Ely has released three live albums, and they all are super-charged affairs. On this album recorded in Austin, Ely touches bases with all of his albums except Honky Tonk Masquerade and offers two new songs: the tear-jerking "Where Is My Love" and the hard-driving original "Drivin' To the Poorhouse in a Limousine." Ely's stripped-down band features Jimmy Petit on bass, Davis McLarty on drums, and David Grissom--certainly the most rock-oriented of Ely's lead guitarists over the years and a gifted artist in his own right.

The energy on this live set is something that Ely has never fully captured on a studio album. This is the next best thing to actually being there. RECOMMENDED

5 out of 5 stars a rare, GOOD live recording.......2000-11-08

an old pal suggested i buy this for the longest time. he was nagging at me; getting on my nerves. just to shut him up, i ended up buying the CD (used). i brought it home, popped off the shrink wrap, and inserted it into the NAD CD player. i normally DO NOT like live recordings. this sure as hell is an exception. from start to finish. i'm not going to give you a song-by-song review/commentary. all i'll say is: BUY THIS MUSIC...(lp, cd, cassette, whatever). you WILL NOT regret it. the only other 'live' recording that might (MIGHT) come close to being this good is: Santana: "Sacred Fire" (live in South America) nah, ELY is better...

    5 out of 5 stars Brecht sings!.......2003-02-02

Come on! A chance to hear Bertolt Brecht sing his own Mack the Knife before Bobby Darrin messed it up! How many CDs are going to have that?!

3 out of 5 stars Some good, some bad, all Weill........2003-01-02

Kurt Weill and Broadway fans will probably feel an intense need to have this album, and I'm not sure I'd be able to dissuade them. There's some good stuff on this recording, to be sure, but a great deal of it is in German, and much of it might not interest even someone with just a casual interest in the material chronicled. While there's a strong representation of The Threepenny Opera (all in German), the selections from Lady in the Dark featuring Gertrude Lawrence and Danny Kaye are vital, as are the tracks of Mary Martin and Kenny Baker performing selected numbers from One Touch of Venus. (You can also hear Walter Huston performing a song from Knickerbocker Holiday, though it is, for some strange reason, "The Scars." It's an interesting historical record, but not a great song.) Lotte Lenya also sings some as well, which is a treat, but overall, this is a highly variable recording. Make sure you know exactly what you're getting beforehand, or you may be likely to find yourself--as I do--listening to only half the album.

      Product Description

The Out To Lunch Quintet: Live at the Artists Quarter. Recorded live on June 2nd and 3rd, 2006, this CD captures the excitement of live jazz and preserves the beauty of Eric Dolphy's Out to Lunch (1964), a seminal album that influenced a generation of jazz musicians and remains a cornerstone in the modern jazz movement. This is the first recording since the original to use Dolphy's arrangements and instrumentation and the first ever live recording of the compete album. The Out To Lunch Quintet features top musicians from the Minneapolis-St. Paul area. Dave Milne, an accomplished and versatile performer and composer, plays alto saxophone, bass clarinet, and flute. Free jazz trumpeter Kelly Rossum penned the only song on the CD not written by Dolphy. Vibraphone virtuoso Dave Hagedorn, an Artist in Residence at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota, has toured and recorded with George Russell. Bassist Tom Lewis is known for his lyrical solos and musical versatility. Drummer Phil Hey studied with Ed Blackwell and toured with Dewey Redman for over 20 years. The CD begins with all the compositions from Dolphy's Out To Lunch in their original order: Hat and Beard, Something Sweet, Something Tender, Gazzelloni, Out to Lunch, and Straight Up and Down. Following are two additional Dolphy compositions, Far Cry and The Prophet. The final track is Kelly Rossum's Rush Hour, a perfect complement to Dolphy's music.

      Customer Reviews:

      2 out of 5 stars Sounds bad.......2006-10-13

The edition of this CD that I have only contains the first CD listed above. So this review is an assessment of those first 11 songs.

My interest in Shostakovich continues to grow, despite these unprofessional recordings. The sustained notes that conclude the "Waltz (from 'Golden Mountains')" are overblown and horribly out-of-tune. The vocal solos are delivered with just as much subtlety. In all honesty, much of this collection sounds like a remedial high school band that had booked just two hours of studio time.

      Overall, pretty crummy sounding.

4 out of 5 stars Would have been one of Hollywood's best........2004-01-10

Shostakovich's film music is usually disparaged when compared with his concert hall compositions. Of course it isn't up to those standards. Most of the movies weren't good & some scoring assignments were actually propaganda punishments for his "formalist" & "decadent" creative transgressions, & none ranks with the Eisenstein/Prokofiev collaborations. But try comparing this music with what came out of Hollywood during the later of these years. Alex North is rightly praised for "Cleopatra," Franz Waxman for "Taras Bulba" & "Peyton Place." Also John Green's "Raintree County." These are hardly film classics. Miklos Rozsa, a consummate professional, turned out memorable scores for some very expensive clinkers. Such examples are legion. Brits William Walton & Malcom Arnold arranged concert suites of their movie music. & I personally despise Maurice Jarre for composing that insidious earworm, "Lara's Theme."

This double CD box is indifferently programmed & contains no liner notes; you'll have to sort out the history yourself. But the performances are fine - a few are on higher-priced releases. The music itself ranges from cabaret to waltzes to dramatic battle action. In "New Babylon" the Krafty Komposer demonstrates the sardonic wit he often used to mock his Soviet Kulture Kummittee Kumrades.

3 out of 5 stars Best of Motion Picture Scores.......2000-07-22

If you like Shostakovich's main music, check out this sampling of his motion picture scores, his little know music. I think you will be suprisue.

        5 out of 5 stars a ton of music!.......2001-11-20

Since there is no cd information here, I'd like to give a description & track listing. This is a double cd - one cd is live, the other is a best of. Transmutation is the 'best of' and features 13 songs from Lydia Lunch's best albums: Honeymoon In Red, Shotgun Wedding, Stinkfist, and more. Along with Lunch are many of her famous friends and longtime collaborators such as: Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth, Clint Ruin (also known as Foetus), Die Haut, Rowland S Howard from These Immortal Souls, Shockheaded Peters, and more.

The first cd also features a postcard of the famous 'Transmutation' digital photo montage by artis JK Potter.

The second cd is a live recording (the packaging claims it is 'Live in Siberia' - who knows?). It features 10 songs.
