The burning question for this soundtrack is, Can rapper Queen Latifah handle the vocal demands a Pearl Bailey-ish character singing standards by Billy Strayhorn, Irving Gordon, and Randazzo & Weinstein? The answer is yes. Her rendering of Strayhorn's "Lush Life" is particularly pleasant, and is produced and arranged beautifully by Mervyn Warren, who did most of the work on the album. Danny DeVito takes a stab at the Gershwins' "They Can't Take That Away from Me" and delivers it adequately, with a touch of charm. The disc also includes originals by Sly & the Family Stone, Dean Martin, and Mel Tormé. The only drawback is the slightly Muzak-like smooth-jazz score by George Fenton, presented in snippets at the end. --Aaron Tassano

5 out of 5 stars L-O-L Soundtrack.......2007-06-29

If you love the movie this soundtrack is a must have. I'm listening to the CD right now. If you enjoy cool jazz and smooth vocals you will not be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars This is a great soundtrack.......2007-01-28

This is a little known but good movie with a great soundtrack. Queen should put out a CD of american standards and blues. The instrumentals are great and you get to hear wonderful classics from Dean Martin and Mel Torme. A little something for everyone. If you love me is a really good dance song. I love this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Yes 5 stars.......2006-10-02

If you like jazz and easy listening this album is for you. And who really blew me away was Queen Latifa. I had no idea she could sing like that. She should be doing more jazz songs, she has such a pure voice. I play this over and over in my car I can't get enough. She's up there with Lena Horne in my book. Also, Danny DeVito sings on this, too, he is not a singer but it works! Enjoy!

3 out of 5 stars Mediocrity at it's Best...........2005-03-06

It's beyond me how people can give this cd 4 and 5 stars and not mention the great Etta James, Mel Torme, or Dean Martin in favor of the greatest mediocricy since oleo became margarine: Queen Latifah. If it weren't for the aforementioned superstars and Brownstone, this cd would be as exciting to listen to as watching paint dry. I know Latifah is all popular and things, but has musical taste gone out the window?? She is NO Pearl Bailey and that comparison is growing thinner than Oprah! Latifah's singing at best is on the high end of karaoke. Now, I really like to see the Queen acting it up all over the screen, she does have talent. And I'm not hating, but there's no way in heck the Queens vocals help this cd along. Sure, the songs here are better than her solo effort of jazz standards, but they do not stand out by any stretch of the imagination. Oy!!

4 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2004-10-16

Queen Latifah as Liz Bailey I think didn't get as much play as it should have. "Lush Life" is magnificent and it has everything to do with the confidence and also vulnerability her voice displays. Brownstone's "If You Love Me" was played at the most magical scene in the film. Judith taking that ecstacy hit and then dancing in unison in that sensual Sapphic dance put you at "The Confessional". One of the greatest scenes in cinema.

Aaron Lines hails from Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada, a remote little town 300 miles north of Edmonton. Living Out Loud, his debut, is a solid, if undistinguished, slab of heartland rock that recalls the work of fellow countryman Bryan Adams and, at times, John Mellencamp circa 1985. With the help of producer Chris Farren, Lines has crafted a set that initially sounds slick and powerful, but one that is ultimately undermined by trite lyrics and hackneyed musical ideas that were hackneyed years ago. Still, his freshly scrubbed look and smooth delivery will likely appeal to younger fans and to those who like their country with a rock edge instead of a down-home twang. --Jim Caligiuri

5 out of 5 stars Wow.......2005-04-09

I had the pleasure of seeing Aaron in concert when I was in Ft. McMurray for the Arctic Winter Games last winter and also got to meet him. I had always loved 'You Can't Hide Beautiful" but had not heard any of his other songs until the concert.
Well, I LOVED his music and he sounds exactly like he does on the radio, which is an added bonus. His voice is so pure and he seems to really be singing from his heart, which it seems like lately a lot of musicians are not.
I would highly recommend this CD to anyone who likes catchy, but meaningful songs.

New to the music scene, Aaron Lines is sure to be around for years to come. His voice is angelic and he sings with true compassion and dedication. His song, "you can't hide beautiful" is absolutely phenommenal!

5 out of 5 stars Aaron will be here for years to come.......2003-02-12

Aaron's first cd on a record label is so fantastic it's hard to put it in to words. Every single song shows his beautiful and sexy voice singing with emotion. He's also from Canada, which adds to the touch. I had the opportunity to meet him back in July of 2001, before he had his record deal. He is a wonderful guy with a great sense of humor. I can't wait to see what will come next from this talented and handsome newcomer. His cd is a fantastic addition to any collection of true country fans. Keep up the great work Aaron! You're doing just wonderful. Can't wait to see you again.

I would think there would be a place for this album in the hearts of "hard rock" fans. You take "crooner" Jimmy Barnes and couple of ex Ozzy players and combine them with Kansas, Dixie Dreg, Deep Purple guitar legend Steve Morse and you got yourself a party. Now, I understand the ex Ozzys from Oz are no longer thrilled with their former boss. Seems they were left off of some remastered Ozzy releases that they orginally played on. That doesn't keep L.L. from playing some scorching covers of the bat man's music as well as some original tunes of their own. It's nice to have something you can turn up to "11" that's more "hard rock" than "heavy metal". It's a subtle distinction perhaps but I think "hard rock" is a little less moody. You're able to have a little more fun with it. All in all, highly recommended.

    5 out of 5 stars A GEM.......2003-03-10

There is no way I can withold a 5th star from this despite the shortish measure - only 45 minutes or so. The discography of Handel is not in proportion to his significance and I am not going to quibble when offered something as good as this. The style is 'authentic' in a way that I would expect will give most music-lovers no problem, free from dryness, affectation or exaggerated antiqueness, and the recorded quality is excellent. I am definitely a fan of Jill Gomez. She has a sweet, pure soprano tone, completely comfortable with the high tessitura of her first aria and priestess-like in the unaccompanied invocations at the start of the remarkable final chorus. This is a device Handel used on a smaller scale in Israel in Egypt, but he makes a lot more of it here. Robert Tear is very effective in an 'upfront' way, the instrumental soloists are exemplary, and the whole work is Handel at his most attractive. The text is Dryden's (Purcell set various others) and it obviously does no harm to have some decent poetry for once. What St Cecilia ever had to do with music seems to be a bit of a mystery, but she is worth a few novenas for what she inspired various composers to, Purcell as well and Handel not only here but in the even better Alexander's Feast.

5 out of 5 stars The Messiah Was Just Around the Corner.......2002-07-17

Well, the Messiah was only three years ahead of him when Handel wrote his great setting of John Dryden's shorter Cecilian ode. And you'll note that the final chorus, "The dead shall live," inhabits that long-breathed and potent world of the great choruses from the Messiah and Israel in Egypt, written the same year as the Ode for St. Cecilia's Day.

The current recording is mostly magnificent, with a militant Robert Tear, whose aria with chorus "The trumpet's loud clangor" is exciting in the extreme, with help from a resplendently recorded solo trumpet and the very alert Choir of King's College, Cambridge. My one slight reservation concerns Jill Gomez, who seems to be universally admired, so maybe I'm out in left field. But while I find her voice a highly responsive instrument for which Handel's difficult coloratura passages hold no terrors, for me it is also a trifle hooty, and Gomez' enunciation is not clear, especially compared to that of the clarion-voiced Mr. Tear.

But as I say, my reservation is a slight one, considering the great strengths of this performance: excellent playing from the English Chamber Orchestra, lush and colorful contributions from the solo instrumentalists (cello, flute, lute, trumpet, organ), and the superb work of the chorus and of Robert Tear. Not to mention that of Philip Ledger, who moves the proceedings at just the right pace, building the great climaxes thrillingly. Even the engineers are on their very best behavior, turning in a recording that is a model of clarity and vividness. A great work gets its due here.

Living Colour transcended the boundries of music in the late 80's, early 90's. They are like no other band. They have a style all their own. (Like King's X, another band worth checking out). Livings Colour's music is mixed with jazz, hard rock, calypso, blues, r&b, you name it, its got it. Vernon Reid is such an exceptional guitar player and all round musician, where as Cory Glover has explosive lyrics, that move you to the core. With cuts like Cult Of Personality, Glamour Boys, MIddle Man, and others, you cant lose with this CD. Black guys playing Hard Rock, you bet Cha. And they do it like no other....

This CD is decent. It has 1 great song(cult of personality) and a couple of o.k songs. Glamour boys is an especially funny track. Overall the CD is worth it just because Cult of Personality is on it. If you don't like that song you won't like any of the other tracks on this record.

4 out of 5 stars what do you really need to say...........2005-02-05

supergroup, yep. supergroup with steve morse on guitar... even if it was terrible, the completest in me had to have it. my guitarist's ear locks in on steve morse of course, so for me the shining point of this album is what morse does with these tracks. one of the things I have to give morse, outside of what every other guitar player on the planet always says about him, he is one of the very few players who can employ such a wide swath of styles without losing his own voice... bill frisell and nels cline fall into this category as well. For example, I've never been a big deep purple fan, but of course when steve morse began playing with them I was suddenly on the purple bandwagon because I just had to hear what a band I really didn't like would sound like with one of my favorite guitarist playing for them. admittedly, deep purple is not one of my favorite morse related groups, but much like pizza (and other things)... it's still good even when it's not so good. everybody knows morse's style from the dregs and the steve morse band (which... even though I'm a fan... sounds a lot like the dregs at times), and his playing with deep purple remains true to the band's traditional sound, Living Loud is a FANTASTIC project for the steve morse fan. he covers the cores of the songs perfectly, but there isn't a single solo, or outro for that matter, on this album that doesn't just make you want to enjoy late 80's technical guitar rock again (no. poison doesn't count... unless you're talking about the 2 seconds that blues saraceno played with them...) his solo on crazy train was the point where I said out loud, "I'm SO glad he stopped being an airline pilot and started playing music again..." my only complaints are: first, this disc is only good in the car on days when my wife doesn't wake up before me and drive my jeep to work, leaving me with the ford escort zx-2 she drove in college. .. second, I look far too old to be playing this album at high volume while driving in my car, also, relate this complaint to the previous one and I look exceptionally stupid, and third, I have a hard time listening to this album sitting at home. I need to be driving somewhere without stoplights, or at least operating heavy machinery. I also feel obliged to note that I focused on morse's role in this project because, to me, his is the part that stands out the most. but we all hear things differently. this album is an all around EXCELLENT treatment of its material, and even the casual rock fan will find it - at the least - interesting and dare I say it... fun. buy it before it goes out of print! I also recommend tracking down the DVD of their live show if you have a multi-region DVD player.

3 out of 5 stars What a strange mixture ............2004-10-02

Ever since our late night rock DJ here in the UK ( we only had one station then ! ) used "take it off the top" as his theme tune, some 30 years ago, I have been a fan of Steve Morse., and lets face it, I bought this album simply because of Steve Morse .... And as I thought he would, he dominates the project.

Whilst Kerslake and Daisley have been part of the music scene for a long time and contributed to some great songs, their musical contribution is not "outstanding" and they provide a solid backbone, and no more, to Steve Morse and Jimmy Barnes.

I bought this album because I always thought the original Ozzy tracks were great ... and now here is a group that have the ability to make them even better ... what could possibly go wrong ?

Lets, to use a SM title, "Cut to the Chase" ... Steve is guitar playing's equivalent of a Brain Surgeon. IMO, rock tracks called "crazy train" and "flying high again" require more of the approach of a "Jack the Ripper". Whilst Steve plays riffs with energy and precision, when it comes to the solos, the band, more often than not, stop playing and allow him free reign ... and he struggles. His superb, clinically clean approach (which makes him so unique) cannot by itself create the manic energy and "hair on the back of the neck" moments required in all these rockers, and the band are doing nothing to help. Can you think of a SM track where his "heavy" playing alone has created the excitement and energy required of these tracks ?

I would love to see how the guys in Dream Theater could have done this. John Petrucci style is more than able to create the energy required to support the riffs, and Mike and John would have been belting out a powerhouse of support .. not standing back and admiring.

So that is my MAIN problem. The soloing, whilst excellent musically, they are out of character to the main riffs, and the energy level sinks, rather than rises .... But what of the music ?

The originals are good .. they are a little more laid back, and so my main problem is not so obvious. Some nice alternate picking accompaniments make for some good music. Jimmy Barnes voice takes a bit of getting used to, and is a cross between Joe Cocker and Brian Johnson of AC-DC, but is not bad.

The remakes are nowhere near good enough, in my mind, to satisfactorily answer the question ... why did they bother? They have added nothing, and have actually removed some of the energy levels from the tracks. Yes, they have some interesting playing from Morse, but they are 80's rock tracks which are just not in character with Morse's clean playing. I am not saying he CANNOT play this way ... There is plenty of evidence of his ability to really "shred", but he needs Van and Dave to compliment him, and help him out. He just does not get that help here.

Strange record ... some good tracks, but others leave you wondering WHY?

5 out of 5 stars Living Loud redefines the image of super group.......2004-06-26

This cd is what I call Must Have!!! It is as good as Sting in the Tale.
Great power rock, good tunes, very enjoyable!! There are 5 originals and 6
ozzy tunes. First off, the musicianship is great. Lee plays powerfully as
always, and Bob plays a thunderous bass. Morse is an exceptional guitarist
and plays passionately and versatilely throughout. The vocalist, Jimmy Barnes, is one of those raspy types that grow on you, like Springteen, Joe Cocker, John Kay etc. Beside no one can sound any weirder than Ozzy!! Don Airey plays some really great keyboards that are often easy to pick out in the mix. This cd redefines the image of Super Group!! Tight, cohesive playing with the true meaning of team work..

First the originals, Last Chance is a power rocker that starts off the cd. It features heavy guitar, heavy bass and is easy to sing along with. One of those songs that gets your hips moving and screams get up and dance!
"Every Moment a Lifetime" track 3 is a bluesy song that turns power rocker. The guitar just rings out in this song and vocal emotional and moving. The song ambles along nicely with an underlayment of some nice Hammond. It sort of reminds me of Uriah Heep's "Shelter From the Song" with its intensity and structure.
Track 5 is "In the Name of God" I like the message, so appropriate in today's times. The song is not syrupy at all, but powerful. I cannot predict the success of this as a single, it will be either a huge dud or a smash hit. It is that different and has that potential. The guitar work has an Asian sounding twang to it, I am talking region, not the group Wetton was in. Track 7 "Push me too hard" is killer!! I love it!! It first starts out with some ACDC sounding guitar riffs, but becomes more complex than ACDC ever would be. My highlight of the cd, featuring rip roaring guitar solos, some nice Hammond and overall a danceable rocker. Walk Away is a power blues rock ballads. Has emotional vocals, prominent keyboards and lots of changes throughout the song.

Now for the remakes! "I Don't Know" very true to the original, nice treatment and very powerful. "Crazy Train" has stunning guitar work and sound effects, Morse makes you forget Randy Rhoads, the playing is that great! The end of the song has a very cool vocal effect. "Flying High Again" featuring more power guitar work and outstanding vocals. One of the ozzy songs "Mr. Crowley" just blew me away. If Heep were to cover an Ozzy tune, this is what it would sound like. The opening Hammond riffs sent chills up and down my spine. It has a vocal sort of like Iron Man or 21st Century Schizoid Man. "Tonight" I at first thought was original, since the song to me sounds different then the original. A power ballad with emotional vocals, one of my favorite tracks on the cd. Lastly "Over the Mountain" closes out the cd, it is my opinion the heaviest track on the cd. Lee's drumming is fast and furious, Bob plays a thumping bass, the guitar work is screaming and Jimmy Barnes sounds like he is singing for his life. They put it all into this song.

Overall this cd is a winner!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1 out of 5 stars Boring, mindless and a sad day for some talented musicians.......2004-06-26

I was hoping for better from these guys, a whole lot better. Some of the top players in the heavy rock genre....put out a really boring, tired sounding recording. I get the feeling that no one was enthusiastic about recording this. It lacks guts, and Jimmy Barnes's vocals are horrendous at best - mindless screeching. I saw them perform some of this CD live and none of them, especially Steve Morse, looked to be enjoying themselves, and you can tell it when you listen to this CD. 80's heavy metal at it's worst, 20 years too late. And the Ozzie covers really stink. At least he play's them with passion and conviction ( and I don't like his music) Buy something else and live to enjoy it!

5 out of 5 stars Shame on you OZZY.......2004-06-25

Bob Daisley and the boys give you one of the best CD's of the year without a doubt. Busy Bob also just got through recording "
Power of the Blues" with gary Moore and it's well Gary moore nuff said!!!!!!!! Living loud is superb. Worth $100 dollars!!!

3 out of 5 stars Not quite good enough.......2006-05-16

I think that Bob Daisley is a very talented bass player and musician (song writer as well). The songs that were NOT former Ozzy songs were mediocre to average. I think the Ozzy covers were OK. Daisley added more to these versions and Steve Morse did a good job playing Randy's pieces and making them his. The vocals werent good. I dont think this guy's voice is that great and he is the weak point in the band (Don Airey, i could barely hear you... and your version of mr crowley on blizzard was 10 times better).

Bottom line...After the whole debacle between Ozzy and Daisley/Kerslake, they go and re-record ozzy's songs to try and capitalize on it. I dont think they did good enough job. I'd be curious to listen to clips of a new album, but Bob... Lee... dont try and revive the ozzy classics, lets see what you have now.

4 out of 5 stars To the guy below..........2006-01-01

There is not one single Black Sabbath cover here. They are OZZY OSBOURNE's cover songs.

      It's a great album.

4 out of 5 stars Living Loud is Living Large!.......2005-12-30

What do you get when you mix members of Deep Purple, Uriah Heep, Cold Chisel, Whitesnake and Black Sabbath performing 5 Black Sabbath covers and 7 new songs of their own?

      You get Living Loud:

Steve Morse: Guitar (Dixie Dregs, Deep Purple)
Bob Daisley: Bass (Ozzy Osbourne, Gary Moore, Black Sabbath)
      Lee Kerslake: Drums (Uriah Heep)
Don Airey: Keyboard (Whitesnake, Gary Moore, Deep Purple)
      Jimmy Barnes: Vocals (Cold Chisel)

The new tracks are quite enjoyable, rollicking and fun-- the Sabbath covers take some getting used to. Morse is an exceptional guitarist and puts his own stamp on these Randy Rhoads classics and make them his own. The problem comes with Barnes voice-- and I'm a huge fan of Jimmy Barnes, he's an Australian institution. I think the problem is that both Ozzy and Barnesey have distinct voices-- and their voices are so distinctly different. Barnes voices is a cocktail of equal parts Joe Cocker and Brian Johnson (of AC/DC). The more I listen to the CD the more Barnes treatment of the Sabbath covers grows on me, but it's certainly taking a lot to get used to. At first listen I wanted to throw the CD out the window because there was something about Barnes voice on THOSE songs that wasn't quite meshing in my head. It was only after I was able to open my mind and listen to the Sabbath covers as if I was listening to them for the first time that I finally started to enjoy Jimmy's treatment of the material.

      5 out of 5 stars Different....but cool!.......2005-12-23

At first I was expecting another duplicate of Zakk Wylde takes of Ozzy classics. After hearing it on the first listen, I thought....this is a little odd. After numerous listens, I thought, WOW this is way cool. Steve Morse puts his own signature on Randy Rhodes classics and does it splendidly. This is a really cool cd, with good original songs as well, especially Pushed Me Too Hard and Walk Away. Good job guys!

5 out of 5 stars Steve Morse is Unreal!.......2004-12-06

I wouldn't go so far as to say you'll forget all about Randy Rhoads - because that would be impossible. Steve though brings these classics to life, with a huge guitar sound, while staying true to the originals. He takes a little liberty with the solo's, but that's the point - I'm more interested in how he would approach those songs. Overall Morse just rocks out, particularly on the Ozzy songs, so much so, I'd love to see him play with Ozzy eventually.
