5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!! Wow. A good clean ROCKER! .......2006-09-06

Great crankin rock. Awesome vocals, no showboating, just a band playing music and having fun. These guys hammer.

Powerful guitars, great vocals. They are going someplace I'm sure. I guess that next year at this time, their music will be beaten to death on commercial radio, but heck, maybe they'll make some money.

They're sound is not that much different than lots of others theze days, but they do it with a flair.

5 out of 5 stars my favorite album and band right now.......2006-07-20

this album is absolutely great. it's like all i listen to lately. i'm thinking this band should blow up big. however, i was disappointed to hear one of the guitarists on this album is not in the band anymore? if that's true, it's a shame because i love the band as heard on this album.

5 out of 5 stars Egypt Central.......2006-03-01

I bought this cd a while back at Cat's Music in memphis, it's a great album. There has never quite been sound like Egypt Central and I'm sure there never will be another like them. They're not signed yet so that's why they aren't on here. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't by the album cause they really do rival any signed band out there and were at one time almost signed or signed to Lava Records but something happend and the album was self-released. It the album feat. the singles Taking You down, also heard on the soundtrack to The Cave, You Make Me Sick and the incredibly popular Over and Under. Over and Under is now being played on over 200 stations in the US. Be sure to listen for it and to grab the album. You can get the album at Cat's Music in Memphis, Best Buy in Memphis, Best Buy in Nashville, Best Buy in Knoxville, and online at cdbaby.com

I bought this cd from Best Buy in memphis. I guess its not sold elsewhere yet. If you would like to hear what they sound like do a search for the cave soundtrack. they are track 17.

4 out of 5 stars you'll wish you were there.......2006-12-10

"Epitome" opens the CD with a stately saxophone statement, then "Prince Lasha" gets into the heart and spirit of the CD. Basically, there's a whole mess of saxophonists playing swinging lines and someone playing hot solos over it. There are moments of orchestration (thankfully, with 12 to 13 people playing simultaneously), and there are free spots during some of the solos. Pope invited guest saxophonists Michael Brecker, Joe Lovano, and James Carter, who solo on different songs. Odean Pope solos, of course, as well two members of his choir. Underneath it all is an unknown rhythm section who do just as good a job as any name players. Since it's a live date, you can appreciate how the Saxophone Choir is a finely-tuned piece of machinery. Five of seven songs are by Pope, and two are by John Coltrane. The Coltrane songs sound no better or worse than the Pope songs, which may reflect the advantage Pope has writing for an unusual ensemble. The highlight of the CD is the scorching "Muntu Chant" at the end. Music heard live will sometimes bring moments of total joy and bliss. I'm sure the people in the audience were feeling that as the Choir walked off stage. Ornette Coleman was also in the audience, and wrote some liner notes. I've never read anything by Ornette, his written word is as unique as his music.

5 out of 5 stars Stupendous.......2006-04-16

If you appreciate the finest in saxophone playing, jazz composition and distinctive orchestras, then you MUST MUST MUST listen to this unique album. I first saw Odean Pope play with Max Roach about 25 years ago in Chicago and was utterly amazed at Pope's technical command of the instrument (he is by far the master of circular breathing). Then I was utterly astonished when I heard a recording of his Saxophone Choir about 12 years ago - and I have always been a huge fan of the World Saxophone Quartet. Given the paucity of Pope on disc, the jazz world is in for a thrill with this live album from a date at the Blue Note (I wish I had been there). The only quibble is that a number of the pieces have been recorded by Pope's Saxophone Choir before, but that's a bit like complaining that Ellington recorded "Take the A Train" too often!! Besides, the personnel on these versions is the best ever.

5 out of 5 stars Long Overdue.......2006-04-13

Never done this before, but somebody had to say something about this marvelous disc. I assume I'm writing for those unfamiliar with Odean's work, because if you follow him, this release is an event, and you bought this the second it came out. What a 12 months for bombshell live jazz releases. I've been engrossed by the Monk/Coltrane and Coltrane at the half-note recordings, but I have to admit that I've found this one even more exciting. It's just as rare as either, more so even, both for the ear, but also as a musical document. Odean Pope is not just another Philadelphia tenor from the Carolinas. He was long-time tenor for Max Roach; do not miss TO THE MAX, which features fellow Philadelphian and choir bassist Tyrone Brown as well. Still Odean is criminally under-represented on disc. Recordings of his choir are particularly scarce. If he had gone to Europe or up the turnpike perhaps that would not be the case, but he stayed home in Philly, capital of obscure treasures. I've seen Odean in different groupings perhaps twenty times here in Philly over the past ten years (particularly memorable were home-comings of Sunny Murray, joined by Byard Lancaster and Khan Jamal), and although I've seen the apprentice choir - featuring McIver, Levin, Bobby Zankel with young students of Pope - I've never had a chance to see the full adult choir. But this disc is rare also in a musical sense: there's really nothing that sounds quite like this band. And Odean has such a distinctive and unusual voice as well. Here he's joined by Brecker whose capacity for drama maybe has never been better served. Lovano is a contrast: more mercurial and luminous set next to Odean's dark, pondering tone. Whether you're into Ellington's suites or Vandermark 5 or Either/Orchestra, this is something you have to hear.

2 out of 5 stars a bit shallow.......2007-01-18

I bought this album based on the clips i listened to on Amazon. The bits of each song gave me the impression of the build ups to what could be a really unique set of songs, but after my initial listen (and in subsequent listens,) this album felt like a bridge to nowhere. I don't hate the thing but i definitely couldn't reccomend it. The recording is kinda stale as well. I'm interested to see what this band does in the future... maybe they are just a bit young on this record.

5 out of 5 stars astonishing.......2006-06-16

The intelligence and creativity of these musicians is so inspiring. The music is challenging and emotional and like reading a really great book. Like the typewriter part. You need to listen hard to take the ride. The best song is "Brawling on Epic Landforms". Outstanding depth and promise.

5 out of 5 stars #1 Jazz Release Of The Year.......2006-06-07

"Locked In The Basement?" No more, no way. These three musicians are incredibly talented idividually and collectively as you will hear on all 11 songs. Could I pick a favorite on the CD? It's borders on the impossible. That's just how great their debut CD is. They've unlocked the basement and headin` to the top floor. Mark my word!

4 out of 5 stars Another great trip down the MFU memory lane.......2005-10-19

Volume 2 (comprised of 2 CDs) is another first rate compilation of the series' original music and not to be missed by U.N.C.L.E. fans. The liner notes are wonderful and add a lot to ones appreciation of the music.

My only problem is that THE CDs ARE COPY PROTECTED! Considerable work is needed to get the music onto your iPod, if you really want the music in your mp3 collection. This is a major hassle and a surprise, since the first set in the series was not copy protected.

5 out of 5 stars The best of the three Double CDs ORIGINAL soundtrack release.......2005-07-12

Many of us have always thought The Man From UNCLE had the best music for a TV series ever, and this three double CD release confirms this. Wow! I'd be just happy with one CD, but having SIX (three double CDs packages) is absolutely out of this world, I mean, a lifetime wait come true.

Indeed, this is an unbelievable collection of three double CDs packages with the complete series soundtrack, and I mean the complete music, not a tune is missing.

And this is the ORIGINAL Man From Uncle music. Let me stress the point: this is the four years ORIGINAL soundtrack with the original recordings as they were heard throughout the series, not a no-name orchestra doing personal versions of the stuff. The audio transfer is very, very good, the music from late episodes is even in stereo.

Each individual CD carries over 70 minutes of music. All in all there you have the four TV seasons main titles and all, absolutely all of TMFU unforgetable music.

This is not a chronological release, meaning, all CDs have a mix of music from all four TV seasons. Volume 1 is heavier on early TV seasons stuff, fans of Jerry Goldsmith will love it. Those of us who prefer what Gerald Fried and later Richard Shores did with TMFU music, then volume 2 is mandatory. If you are a fan, you can't miss any of these six CDs. However if buying all three double packages is too much for you, you must go with Volume 2, no questions asked. Volume three is the weakest of them as it brings "suites" and a whole CD with "The Girl From Uncle" soundtrack, but you have a bonus "Open Channel D" beeper.

Each package is gorgeous, each with a glossy color booklet with extensive liner notes with details on how each tune was written to a specific TV series episode and how it was used onwards. You have bios on the composers, on how the recordings were made, even an overview on how many instruments were available in each of the years the music was recorded.

So, throw away your Hugo Montenegro Man From Uncle CD, this is the REAL thing.

Album Description

One of the world's finest instrumental rock 'n' roll bands is back to deliver a batch of energetic, well-written tunes. Influenced by Dick Dale, The Shadows, Link Wray and The Lively Ones, Locked and Loaded features 13 original songs and along with amazing cover art done by lead guitarist Rip Thrillby.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars THE PENETRATORS ARE ONE OF THE BEST.......2003-11-24

Man when I bought this album it blew me out of the water. This is a great surf cd. These guys are Surfin Spys. The band is Rip Thrillby(lead guitar), Spanky Twangler(Rhythm guitar), Trace Luger(Bass), Illya "Stix" Stechkin(Percussion). These guys are from Alabama. If you want a good melody with a Spy twist then this album is for you. If you also like Los Straitjackets and James Bond Movies then give it a shot.

5 out of 5 stars Surf Guitar Lives !.......2002-09-13

If you miss those days when Dick Dale, the Surfaris, Chantays, Pyramids etc. ruled the "airwaves", you will love this disc. All tracks are guitar instrumentals that are true to the original spirit of "surf guitar", but with all the advantages of modern recording technology.
"Checkpoint Echo", "Triple Dog Dare" and "Midnight Run" stood out for me after one play, but all tracks are good. A couple of numbers are slower and moody, but mostly the music here is taken at a frantic pace, and very exciting.
I should also mention the great cover--remember when vinyl album covers became an art form ? Well, this would have been a great "album cover".
For guitar instrumental fans, this is a treat !

4 out of 5 stars Spies and Surf from Georgia!.......2002-06-29

One of the better instrumental-guitar bands out there is the secret-agent-obsessed Penetrators. A lot of style and pizzazz goes into every facet of their packaging, thanks largely to "Rip Thrillby", who in addition to lead guitars also did the terrific cover art and is a website designer in his "secret identity". (Check it out, The Penetrators have one of the BEST-designed websites of any "local" band I've ever run across!) But NO gimmicks are needed in their music-- it's just great!

These guys have had a LOT of appearances on singles, EPs and comp albums (many hard-to-find) and several of the better songs have turned up here (a few re-recorded) including "Redlined", "Speed Bump", "Triple-Dog Dare" and "Mariner 4". My faves on LOCKED & LOADED are definitely "Checkpoint Echo" and "Southern Surf Syndicate Theme".

...

4 out of 5 stars It's Good.......2002-03-22

I ordered it from Amazon, and their efficient order fufillment people found it. It's a surprisingly effective album, with solid and melodic guitar work. Checkpoint Echo is a classic piece, and Deception Bay is a nice slower-tempo number. Solid, straight-ahead surf music, no covers, goth-surf, or rap-surf.

5 out of 5 stars simply the best.......2001-06-22

Not Surf Beat, Banzai Washout or Pipeline again, but original album full of speed of a hurricane, even with peace of a lake in its eye, but always with strong melodies, simply the best instrumental (surf) album I have ever heard. (....)

4 out of 5 stars Locked Out : A case of mistaken identity........2006-01-27

I recall being ecstatic back in 1976 when I found this new release in my local music store. But like so many other new releases by established artists at that time, this particular musical offering came across to me as being as a watered-down counterfeit of one of my all-time favorite groups. Where were the epic story songs and extended guitar jams? It had to be a case of mistaken identity.
Musical tastes were in transition in 1976. "Locked In" was a safe, respectable offering that was a product of the times. I quickly lost interest in "Locked In" and it soon disappeared from my collection. Fortunately, it never really disappeared from my musical conscience. Several tunes from "Locked In" remained in my memory banks over the years and I often found myself second guessing the decision to discard it. Thirty years later I decided to give it a second chance and I am glad that I did.
"Locked In" is actually a good album in spite of the circumstances it was recorded under. The universally appreciated "Rest In Peace" and the closing cut "Say Goodbye" stand alongside the best that WA has to offer. "She Was My Best Friend", "Half Past Lovin'", and "Trust In You" are all very solid efforts that I recall liking well enough the first time around but probably appreciate even more now than I did back in '76. The three remaining tunes: "No Water In The Well", "Moonshine", and "It Started In Heaven" are also good compositions but the vocals are ... different. As much as anything, those three cuts caused me to part company with my original copy of "Locked In". Strangely enough, those same three tunes haunted me over the years and were a major reason I gave "Locked In" another try.
I now recommend "Locked In" without reservation. It has a different feel to it that will probably grow on you if you don't dismiss it offhand. Keyboards and background singers are featured at times with mixed results and Andy Powell utilizes "the bag" (think Joe Walsh on "Rocky Mountain Way" or Peter Frampton on "Do You Feel Like We Do") on a couple of tunes taking Wishbone Ash into new territory that actually works quite well if you are willing to accept something different. When you stop to consider that Wishbone Ash didn't stay locked in to this formula long and released the stunning "New England" later that same year, "Locked In" becomes all the more interesting and essential.

3 out of 5 stars Not their best, but very tasty in parts nonetheless.......2004-12-28

Even the most ardent Wishbone Ash fan will admit that this effort was a bit uneven with the vocals and production, and possibly semi-weak songwriting.......BUT......there is some fantastic guitarwork on this album that is just downright brilliant. The first song, "Rest In Peace" is a masterpiece. Oddly, the very last song, "Say Goodbye" is extremely well done also. However, the middle of the album, although suffering from the above mentioned maladies, DOES deliver some frighteningly great solos and fills in just about every song. Yes, go ahead and skip over "She Was My Best Friend" altogether, and ignore the somewhat anemic vocals delivered by Wisefield on some others, while focusing on the brilliance in bits and pieces that The Ash always delivers no matter how dire the recording circumstances.

If I were a curious first-time Wishbone Ash CD buyer, I would not buy this one first. If you already have a few Ash albums under your belt and haven't heard this album, at least buy it for "Rest In Peace" and to laugh at the mischievious guitar solos delivered by Mr Powell and Mr Wisefield throughout the remainder of the album.

4 out of 5 stars Add it to your collection.......2001-08-09

This import cd on the Repertoire label(famous for their remastering talents)is well worth owning for the following tracks- Rest in peace, No water in the well, Moonshine and Trust in you. Despite what the other reviewers are saying, this is a good cd. Sure the other tracks fall flat, the band even admits this was not one of their better efforts- too dry a recording, wrong producer, female backing singers(groan)as well as some weak material. But I have it and I listen to it, what's that tell you? But of course I am also a big fan as well. Sound quality is good not great but as good as it will get without a high tech 2001 rebuild. This is the Mark 2 lineup with Laurie Wisefield.

1 out of 5 stars Wishbone Ash - Lock Out/Locked In.......2000-06-27

The first cut of this album/cd "Rest in Peace" is utterly fantastic. Unfortunately, it sets the stage for what should happen to the rest of the songs - they should REST IN PEACE. Save your money on this one. Buy "Live Dates" instead.

4 out of 5 stars Locked in should be bursting out.......2000-04-17

Wishbone Ash had a really hard time following up on Argus. A lot of people who bought Argus did so not really knowing WA, which is fair enough, but just for the music which was well publicised. I grew up with WA years before Argus. I used to go to their live gigs when they did the universities in the UK. I knew them before they had a recording contract with MCA. Argus was good but now I get weary of it. Overexposure. The subsequent albums (LPs) to Argus are all great albums. WA's sterling efforts to produce something that would not be the sons and daughters of Argus really shows on their subsequent albums.

This I think was the second album after Argus and is the one that even WA tries to forget. Ted Turner had left after Wishbone Four and his place was taken by Laurie Wisefield.

This to me, and maybe I am the only one, is a nice album. Maybe because when I first bought it back in the 70s it was happy times. The tracks sit together well and their are some nice giutar solos from the two axemen.

If you're a fan or nonfan it is worth buying, a very underrated CD and I am sure once you have given it a couple of spins and listen to what is going on you will enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars Entity album Locked Doors.......2006-05-29

I recently bought this album and was really pleased with the variety of R&B mixed with some hip hop. I am not that big on hip hop but this album is great to listen to or hit the dance floor to. Independent albums are usually not this good but the Locked Doors album is something everyone who loves R&B needs to support. The Indy labels are the future of the music business and I highly recommend getting this album. Great job ENTITY way to go.

The liner notes are virtually nonexistent and the mastering is certainly nothing to crow about, but this CD was worth the price I paid ($12.99 at the local music store). You get two albums for the price of one; Locked In being an uneven but worthwhile effort and New England, the crown jewel in "Boneland". Wishbone Ash was generally weak with their vocal presentations, but man oh man, their guitar work was inspired by the Gods. So yeah, go ahead and grab this CD if you can't otherwise get a copy of New England, imo the best Wishbone Ash ever put forth.
