An active participant to the current rebirth of French Progressive rock, LORD OF MUSHROOMS visibly found a way to achieve its ambitions. Let's talk about four incredible musicians and their irreproachable singer. Also, let's say that being a disciple of Frédéric L'EPEE (SHYLOCK and PHILHARMONIE) definitely gave guitarist Laurent JAMES a great training ! The excellent drummer Volodia BRICE seems quite unable to stick to basic or simplistic rhythms, and among others, participated to the fifth and last album of PHILHARMONIE, "Le Dernier Mot", issued in 1999. It goes without saying that the keyboardist and bass players are also as talented as the other musicians mentioned above ! At first a line-up from the Nice area (In Southern France) specialised in cover version, this quintet started by playing SPOCK'S BEARD, GENESIS, RUSH, MARILLION and DREAM THEATER, before creating its own music. All those references are then unconsciously present in its music at different leve! ls. Recorded in the year 2002, the eponymous album goes far beyond the usual comment for this kind of first works: « First promising album, to confirm with the second one », thanks to the maturity of those experienced players and to their innate sense of melody. Their approach is finally quite American: the tracks are both complex and catchy, the melodies always prove at the same time pleasant and ambitious, and they go without problem from a jazzy sequence to more nervous parts, the vocals are clear and the guitar riffs are quite efficient, the production is perfect… All those ingredients were at the roots of IZZ or ECHOLYN's success those last years, and could have done the same with the not so well-known ANIMATOR. In a nutshell, don't go any further: this first album is already a reference !

As fans of Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy know, each film exists in two versions: the theatrical one and the extended one that appeared on DVD. This luxurious box set--which also comes with a detailed essay on the movie's musical themes--features the full extended score, so many cues not on the CDs of the individual movies are included. Granted, the majority of listeners will be perfectly happy with the shorter versions of the scores--it's a safe bet that most people can live without hearing, say, Ian McKellen's 35-second-long ditty "The Road Goes Ever On" at the beginning of "Bag End," or Viggo Mortensen's performance of his own composition, "The Song of Lúthien," within the track "The Nazgûl." But if you're a completist and/or a devotee of Howard Shore's pounding tympani and overwhelming choral compositions (featured particularly prominently on disc 3, a large chunk of which is devoted to a battle scene), then this set is a dream come true. Audiophiles should note that the fourth disc, a DVD, offers the score in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound. Fire up those speakers so the whole shire can hear. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

I picked up this set because I am both a LOTR fan, movies and books and I need music to help me work. There are some tracks that I skipped over, like the short little ditties in the bar, but many of the songs, such as the Elvish chants are easy to get lost in - its just too bad they don't last longer. The packaging really is well done, though the DVD disc was loose when I received it in the mail, but unharmed. I will have to wait until the price on the second set comes down a little more, but I can't wait for ROTK.

This is by far the editon to get if you loved the lord of the rings soundtrack. It has every song on it from the extended edition. and the DVD-A version is very nice.

This CD collection is wonderful; it has much of the material from the movie that was only included in the extended edition DVD, but it is far from complete. While it does have the complete version of "The Passing of the Elves" and two versions of "The Road Goes Ever On", many of the songs are highly incomplete and inferior to the originals. "Aniron," the theme for Aragorn and Arwen performed by Enya, is incomplete and the lyrics are hard to match to what is being sung. The sound quality for this song is even worse on the accompanying DVD, which is supposed to have all of the music in "superior sound". The song "Prophecy" is reduced to two barely-audible lines and "May It Be" is shortened and different than the original. $60 for this when there are more complete songs on the original soundtrack is ridiculous.

I realy can't add to what others have said about this set, the music is simply the best LOTR soundtrack collection out there! It is all here, and the contents of this set will make any LOTR fan happy and the music DVD is a great one disc addition if you want to hear the entire score in one sitting (to which I have done a number of times already).
My only complaint is the somewhat flimsy cardboard box that houses the contents of this musical treasure. Mine came damaged, and considering the price, I expected better packaging. This is a minor quabble on my part and NO, I havent returned it due to the fact that the music itself Is what I truly treasure, It just would have been nicer to have recieved it undamaged.

        In a way this is a hard set to recommend. Schwarzkopf is superlative throughout, but since these are out-of-print or unrelased recordings, they take second place to her official recordings. EMI looked into their vaults to give her a 70th birthday tribute, and I snapped the set up immeidately. I can't say I go back to it that often, but it fills out Schwarzkopf's great legacy quite well in the field of lieder--no opera included--and the very late material, when her voice was very faded and starting to darken with age, is the most moving.

        I got this album cuz of the song "Lust", which is extremely catchy. Then I learned through MANY plays that this is a remarkable and unique work. Heavy, tight prog songs, but with an almost "pop" edge to it. The vocalist isn't like any other prog singer. Like the other reviewer said, more Layne Staley-ish is probably the closest comparison. I love how different it is in a sea of DT and Pagans mind clones. Highly recommended.

        This album is fantastic for those getting into progressive metal. I stumbled upon this gem when going through a forum, where someone recommended it to a Dream Theater fan.

        The vocalist is amazing. Where most progressive vocalists either embrace operatic vocal styles, like in Dream Theater, Symphony X, or Fates Warning, their vocals take a different approach. They experiment with techno-organic vocals, a gruff, but clean Layne Staley (Alice in Chains) vocals, and a more aggressive, yet power-metal type vocals.

        The guitars are amazing, pulling a lot of John Petrucci's (Dream Theater, LTE) style with Johan Reinholdz's (Andromeda, Skyfire) over the top sharpness.

        The rhythm section is also impressive as they dance around odd chord progressions and time signatures with ease. The song Envy for example plows through a progression in 5/8.

        The concept of going through the Catholic seven deadly sins is also interesting, while the last three tracks use musical and lyrical throwbacks to the previous tracks, rolling it all together.

        I definately recommend this to the person seeking a new metal sound.
