Having been fortunate to have seen the English National Opera's production in 1988 of "Orpheus" with Wilson and Pountney's outrageously naughty English text, this highlight CD serves as an audio souvenir. Too bad the ENO didn't have the foresight to film the production-would have made a great DVD. The CD booklet does have a few photos of the sets designed by Gerald Scarfe (who also designed Pink Floyd's "The Wall" album artwork) so you get a taste, combined with the CD selections, of what the production was like.

Offenbach is great anyhow, but this recording is riotous. The translation into English is first-rate, really funny stuff, and the singing is pretty good, too. Very worthwhile.

The rewritten lyrics, in English, are some of the wittiest and wicked in operetta. Wilson and Pountney have recaptured the spirit of naughtiness, not a small accomplishment in our licentious times. Though delighted to have the highlights, I wished a CD set or video of the full production were available.

        The subject matter is a mixture of dark powerful rock; mostly concerning the human condition in exploration of the supernatural. The music is interesting....moderately heavy in places, with mixtures of keyboards and and strings sprinkled throughout. I would liken the music as a cross between 80's genre Ronnie James Dio/Udo (even a little Geoff Tate of Queensryche) for subject matter and voice, and a likening of classical Deep Purple instrumentally. The guitars, however, are not complex or overpowering....very simple in the chord and riff structure, and an absence of the neoclassical solos; very appropriate for the songs. This is not music for the stereo typical modern headbanger (though big fans of the 80's rock will love the music), as it is not heavy metal; it takes an appreciation for the different genres and classifications of hard rock to really dig this music. From a cursory musical standpoint you think, not bad; but it really is good because it takes talent to make music of this unique quality.
