Very Good Collection.......2006-04-07

The remixes alone are worth the price of admission for this disc of Psychedelic Furs' rarities and b-sides. However, if you want to delve a little deeper into the back catalog of the band and have an open mind to their less "commercial" sounding material, this is a great CD for that, too. "Badman", "Birdland", and the highly unusual version of "Mack the Knife" are standout tracks among the fare that was not used for the albums, but everything here is good and quite a notch above similar compilations for lesser bands. The Shep Pettibone remix of "Shock" is one that begs for the radio to be turned up to 11. Recommended!

Well worth it.......2005-07-06

I always approach "B-Side" and rarities albums with a certain degree of skepticism, wondering why the songs weren't included on the original studio albums. However, on this album, it is quite clear that the answer to that question is they should have been. The Cure-like "Badman" is a superb song, I really don't know why the band couldn't find room for it somewhere. I also like "Aeroplane," "Birdland," and the uncharacteristic "I Don't Want to be Your Shadow." The Furs version of "Mack the Knife," has to be one of the most unusual covers of a standard ever made.

As far as the alternative cuts go, I honestly believe that the dance version of "Goodbye" is better than the original. The other alternative versions are quite listenable, although the eight minute version of "Heartbreak Beat," one of the bands best songs, seems excessive. "No Easy Street" is energized in this live version, and offers solid proof that the Furs were not only a great studio band. In conclusion, all those who consider themselves Psychedelic Furs fans, should have this album.

"Beautiful Chaos".......2003-12-13

Casual fans of the Psychedelic Furs will probably want to pass on B-sides and Lost Grooves for the title is exactly what it is. More serious fans or those who want to start getting into the music of the Furs will appreciate this collection. With rare tracks and remixes from 1982-88, there is not one filler or inferior song in the bunch. All the non-LP B-sides are more than album worthy and the remixes are excellent. Even the 7:20 "Shock" remix is worth one's time. The live version of "No Easy Street" is wonderful.

To me, the real gems are the B-sides which start off this CD. "Aeroplane" (B-side to "Love My Way") is the epitome of the "beautiful chaos" of which Arthur Levy writes in the informative CD booklet. "Birdland" (B-side to "All That Money Wants") is as good as most of the tracks on any Furs album. "New Dream" (from the "Heartbreak Beat" 12") is a nice, lounge-sounding song. My favorite, however, is "Badman" (from the promo "Should God Forget" 12"). "Badman" is a haunting rocker that is one of the best Furs songs I have ever heard. Finally, this CD was put together with much care, with release dates and sources for each track and a nice 7-page article.

"Angels Don't Cry" makes it worth it ..........2001-03-19

Unlike *real* albums you can't listen to it cohesively in one listen as it is really a collection of songs from live tracks to remixes and oddities. Most songs are just different versions that would cater to the dnce or remix enthusiasts. But the real gem here is "Angels Don't Cry". This version is much better than the Midnight To Midnight version and this song is one of their best tunes, musically speaking. I don't know why this wasn't as well-promoted as a single as the other Furs songs. This is right up there with other Furs classics. Considering the cheap price of this CD, imagine you are buying an Angels Don't Cry single with all these bonus tracks. Then it will be worth it for you ...

Didn't check carefully. Since I had lost souls ( allright) and last broadcast( fantastic), I had all the songs except a few of which I love 2, not enough to justify the purshase for me. The double album version may be worth it but it's not cheap. Worth it if you're a fan.

Great driving, in both senses of the word, music. I remember playing the Fervor EP when it came out around 20 years ago for my older roommate, a Dylanish hippie, and he was bowled over by the fine cover of "Absolutely Sweet Marie." What many may not know is that another song on the EP's by a well-known later and once nearly as studied in his obliquity, as Michael Stipe co-wrote "Both Sides of the Line;" curiously, Stipe doesn't sing backup on that song but on "Harvest Moon." Typical ambiguity. REM would have been a great double bill, in their old mid 80s Southern rabble-rousing period, with Jason & the Scorchers. You also might look for the "Reckless Country Soul" reissue of their earliest LP, predating even Fervor. It's not as well-produced, and more for those certain they like the band already, but worth finding.

Fervor really barrels along, although the second song, "Help There's A Fire" always seemed a little jokey, and throws off a bit the momentum of an otherwise strong EP. The album Lost & Found's more polished, if that works for a country-punk classic.

They aren't the more hesitant and more Western than Country predecessors Texas-to-LA's Rank & File--good but sort of bandwagon jumpers from Dils punk to the next flavor of the month; they also have better lyrics than other now-forgotten contenders like the Long Ryders, who were a bit too much Gram Parsons worshippers. X/Blasters side project The Knitters was a lark. Jason and his crack band were the real thing--those who'd grown up mixing C&W with rock all their lives. Lots of indie bands in the 80s started becoming influenced by Johnny Cash after the rockabilly craze subsided. Nothing bad at all with that. But Jason and the Scorchers tip their hats to traditions still lurking off the beaten track back in the hollers. Fans of the White Stripes today might take notice. Hearing this compilation, the strength of the band beyond their instrumental assault comes in the more tender moments too, often overlooked.

Jason sings well, and he interprets various lyrics by the band and by other songwriters intelligently. He gets you into the experiences the words describe and the music fills in. It's not a pose when he dramatizes the characters in his songs. This aspect at first may seem overpowered by the louder songs, but is heard to its advantage when the band takes it down a few notches.
Not perfect, and the pace lags on the album as it goes on a smidgen, but a fine record to be snapped up.

It's sad that the band predated--and undoubtably influenced--the teens who soon became Uncle Tupelo and who would head the alt-country movement. But even this reissue on the Lost Highway sub-label's a now decade-old reminder of this brief flourishing of what Jason and the Scorchers planted in the previous decade, when college radio accepted a band too rockish for C&W and too rootsy for rock marketing niches. This deserves another reissue. By the way, the CD sound is remastered on this 1996 CD to make it punchier than the old vinyl did.

A little bit of 'Quantity over Quality' here, by putting the two first releases of this band together but still real good effort.......2006-06-07

The Best Kept Secret of the 80's and 90's, What a Crime.......2004-04-07

Jason and the Scorchers remains the best live show I've ever seen and their recordings are not far behind. Unfortunately they were about 10-15 years ahead of their time. I continue to look for these recordings whereever I can find them. If these songs were re-released they would hit the top of the country and pop charts at the same time.

I've been a longtime fan since I first saw them back in '86. When my son (who's now only 19 months) asks me one day,"Were they really that good?"..... I'll just play him this CD and let it do all the talking. Word of advice to ALL record labels out there... Do EVERY music lover a favor and re-release these recordings!!!

"Sides" not lost.......2005-10-07

In the vast world of Britpop, like any other music sector the best-known bands are usually the most-hyped ones (read: Coldplay). But if the world were just, one of the most famed bands would be the Doves, makers of strange, eerie and melancholy rock.

And "Lost Sides" gives us whatever little tidbits didn't belong on their albums. B-sides are usually considered songs that didn't cut the mustard, and have to be cobbled together with other B-sides. Not so with The Doves, in their collection of rarities, remixes and B-sides. It's not phenomenal, but it's a good collection of Doves' odds and ends.

The first disc includes some good B-sides and mixes, such as the electro-psychedelic "Crunch," magnificent "Darker," piano-rocking "Hit the Ground Running" and magnificent "Valley." A few are not quite on the level that one expects the Doves on, but it hits the mark more often than it misses.

The second disc contains seven remixes of various "Lost Broadcast" songs; they are, thankfully, not merely adding electronic mishmashes to the existing songs. Instead, they just enhance the preexisting songs, and give them a new edge that lingers on in your mind when you listen to the originals.

"Lost Sides" couldn't really be mistaken for a regular Doves album; at times you can practically hear the seams where the songs were patched together. There's no cohesion. That isn't to say it's bad, it just sounds like what it is, a B-sides/rarities album. Certainly the quality is far higher than many B-side albums, and the production is smooth and sleek.

The psychedelic edge, melancholy lyrics and sort of otherworldly sound are still firmly in place in "Lost Sides." Here and there they stray into different turf ("Crunch," for example), but always come back to their core sound. They even dabble in a some strong classical instrumentation, giving a stately spin to their alt-rock sound.

"Lost Sides" is not the place to start for non-Doves fans, but those who already love the band will devour this surprisingly solid collection of remixes, rarities and B-side versons. A nice if fragmented collection.

Collection of rarities, single "b" sides pretty good 3 1/2 stars.......2005-08-01

When's a collection of single tracks not just a collection of single tracks? When they're exceptionally good. The Beatles could pull this trick off, Crowded House and maybe The Stones but few bands have the creative ability to do the hat trick of releasing gems and hiding them on singles most people don't buy. The Doves pull of the hat trick neatly although there are a few tracks here that will be of interest primarily to collectors.

Much of this has been released in the US (and in Japan) before. "Zither", "Valley" both appeared on the band's first album when it was finally released in the US in 2000. "Hit the Ground Running" appeared along with three other tracks here as a bonus disc for the US release of "The Last Broadcast" so it isn't as if they haven't seen the light of day before. There's a certain amount of filler here but most of it is very, very good.

Of interest to fans will be the 7 song second disc which features remixes of singles released in Europe and the United States. These remixes virtually reinvent some of these songs so, in many respects, it's like listening to a completely different version of these well worn classics. Since Most editions available of this album from amazon.com have copy protection (it appears that the two set does not), I'd suggest trading with fans if you just want a handful of the cuts. If you want everything this marvelous band has released by all means go out and buy this to recover these "Lost" songs.

Could Have Been Better........2004-05-08

Lost Sides has a few must-have tracks
(Darker, Break Me Gently (Incidental), Down To Sea, Your Shadow Lay Across My Life, Valley, Crunch and Far From Grace) but most of this album consists of fillers.

Tracks such as Blue Water, Analog Bass, Blues Tune, Fourty Five, Suitenoise, Man Who Told Everything (Summer Mix) and Acoustic No.1 would have done nicely to fill the dissapointing tracks on this cd, however the bonus disc makes up for the letdown first disc. Remixes of the songs Words, The Last Broadcast, The Sulphur Man and Satellites and very quality. Recommended for collectors but for those who just want quality tracks your better off downloading the songs above from the internet.

B-sides? As in "brilliant"?.......2004-02-02

If all b-sides releases out there were that good we'd be close to an ideal world. Alas, it is well known that "b-sides" usually means a blatant cash-in attempt and a rip-off for the buyer.

Not the case here though with the Doves. This could easily be a "normal" album with prime material and nobody would have anything negative to mention about the quality level in it.

Generally it's a characteristic Doves LP. The dreamy passages and lyrics are there, the post-psychedelia is there (something at which the Doves are pretty adept at), their cool weirdness is there, the gorgeous melancholy is there too.

Aside from a couple of unfortunate moments when they come dangerously close to sounding like Oasis this is great stuff. Along with the Dandy Warhols the Doves represent a still fresh sounding scene and this outing here is not just "for the fans" but for anybody with appreciation for cool timeless music.

The Doves' biggest trick is that their albums offer a lot of diversity. Along with all the elements i mentioned above the Doves do rock. And when they do, you can hardly resist rocking along.

Very Well Done.......2006-10-02

For all you folks who enjoy that early Bing sound, this is a very good CD. Bing in his prime, when he sang his songs without pretense. You can even hear slight slips as he sings (ie, "If I had you"). This is something todays plastic rapped sound would simply digitally "correct" for a modern singer.
Real... Genuine... The quality of the recording, something technology can actually aid in, is brilliant. A fun trip back. Thank you.

Lost Columbia Sides 1928 - 1933.......2005-03-12

Bing Crosby was "cool" before the intended meaning of this word meant something other than cold. For people really interested in Bing Crosby's development as a huge vocalist, this CD set is indispensable. This represents the recordings that Crosby made with Columbia and its recording subsidiaries after Paul Whiteman, who signed Bing's paychecks at the time, left the Victor Talking Machine Company in mid 1928. We hear an interesting metamorphosis take place as we listen to the sides. Listen to 'Tain't So, Honey, 'Tain't So with Bill Challis arrangements along with Bix Beiderbecke and Frankie Trumbauer, then the first solos recordings by Bing in 1929, then make note of After You've Gone on the second CD. Bing was honing his craft from a straightforward vocalist with jazz influence to a very confident and stylish singer. Bing's affiliation with Whiteman continued to early 1930, where the recordings with that band stop on this set. Then we jump to 1932, wherein Bing is recording for Brunswick, and is a performer on his own having hit full fledged stardom in 1931. The sides are unusual since they may not be the most popular of his songs from that time, but they are jazz influenced, which I believe is the connecting thread throughout this collection. Check out St. Louis Blues with Duke Ellington's Orchestra backing him up (both takes here,and Sweet Georgia Brown with Isham Jones' Orchestra. The Last Round Up, from 1933, is an add on to this album, which is actually a reissue of the Bing Crosby Story Volume 1 that appeared on vinyl around 1970. This song illustrates Bing's style when it was fully mature during 1933 and 1934. Many Crosby fans agree these years produced his best work.
So if you want to hear great jazz musicians, quirky 1920's arrangements, a superb singer in the making, jazzy 1930's recordings, or just want to listen to good Bing Crosby vocals, get this album. It fills in a lot of material that many other albums neglect.

For Early Bing, It Doesn't Get Any Better Than This.......2004-11-17

I reviewed Bing's Proper Box Set, "It's Easy to Remember," a couple of years ago and met with some differing responses regarding my disappointment with the sound quality on that set. I found a lack of warmth and felt there was a distracting, metallic presence in the music that kept me from enjoying the wonderful material. This two-cd set is another story. Put them back to back and the difference is obvious. Despite the occasional light scratchiness, the remastering on "Lost Columbian Sides" does these great old tunes justice and the result is an outstanding presentation of Crosby's early work. As a bonus, you get a generous serving of Bix Beiderbecke; some of his solos here are among the best he ever recorded.

Sadly, Bing Crosby has been all but forgotten these days. These sides from the Columbia archives clearly show that he was one of the truly great pioneering jazz singers, spearheading a looser, more casual and rhythmically varied style that influenced everyone who succeeded him, from Sinatra on down. And these 80-year-old arrangements are surprisingly hip and smart, aging quite well. Those with any interest in Bing Crosby's early - and arguably his best - work are strongly urged to give this set a try. It's a superb collection - a real pleasure from beginning to end.

This is a FUN collection of Bing at his jazziest! Sure, jazz has changed since the 1920s...but what a collection! It's a great slice of early 20th century music as joyfully interpreted by Crosby, whose masculine take on music turned the tables on the wimpy, breathy singers who 'crooned' before Bing! And did I say this was fun? ;-)

Bing at his vocal apex.......2003-07-08

Bing's voice was a breathtaking instrument in these years, as these songs amply prove. I think his absolute height in range and expression was in the years 1931-1936, a period generously covered in this collection. If you're only familiar with the Crosy voice from the 40's and 50's, then you're in for a special treat. These recordings showcase Bing's more husky, jazz-influenced delivery, replete with scat singing, improvisations, banter with sidemen and absolutely dizzying vocal virtuosity.

Perhaps the most beautiful song here is "The Last Round-Up," a poignant display which Bing sings with piercing emotion. The high, sustained notes he hits here will send chills down your spine. Another gem is "St. Louis Blues," blessed with a killer vocal performance and jazz band backup. This is an outstanding collection and one which you transform a fence-sitter into a bonafide Crosby fan.

I have the 2 disc set and it is fabulous! It's incredible to hear the progression and changes they made to the songs/demos and finally hear the end result on the Lost Souls and Last Broadcast cds. Hauntingly beautiful songs. I recommend getting the 2 disc set if you can find it.

Solid collection of early takes, B-Sides from Doves.......2005-03-26

"Sides" not lost.......2004-11-17

B-sides are usually considered songs that didn't cut the mustard, and have to be cobbled together with other B-sides. Not so with brilliant Britpop band The Doves, in their "Lost Sides" collection of rarities, remixes and B-sides. It's not phenomenal, but it's a good collection of Doves' odds and ends.

The first disc includes some good B-sides and mixes, such as the electro-psychedelic "Crunch," magnificent "Darker," piano-rocking "Hit the Ground Running" and magnificent "Valley." The second disc contains seven remixes of various "Lost Broadcast" songs; they are, thankfully, not merely adding electronic mishmashes to the existing songs. Instead, they just enhance the preexisting songs.

"Lost Sides" couldn't really be mistaken for a regular Doves album; at times you can practically hear the seams where the songs were patched together. There's no cohesion. That isn't to say it's bad, it just sounds like what it is, a B-sides/rarities album. Certainly the quality is far higher than many B-side albums, and the production is smooth and sleek.

The psychedelic edge, melancholy lyrics and sort of otherworldly sound are still firmly in place in "Lost Sides." Here and there they stray into different turf ("Crunch," for example), but always come back to their core sound. They even dabble in a some strong classical instrumentation, giving a stately spin to their alt-rock sound.

"Lost Sides" is not the place to start for non-Doves fans, but those who already love the band will devour this surprisingly solid collection of remixes, rarities and B-side versons. A nice if fragmented collection.
