1 out of 5 stars Absolutely aweful!.......2007-02-26

I am not a huge Gwen fan but thought this CD would be fun. It is terrible. The second disc replays the same song 4 times in a row, each one a different "mix." Also thought the import would be cool and offer something different but was not impressed at all.

The Review of
DISC #1 Rating: ++++ 4 stars
As you know Gwen made a really big debut in 2004-2005. That's something definitely, with the singles like What You Waiting For & Hollaback Girl is on Billboard. The album itself is alomst perfect. Along the album you'll be so entertained by catchy-classic-mid-techno rhytym and music. The first four track, definitely you've heard them on the radio and watch the video on MTV. Bubble Pop Electric, her duet with Johnny Vulture A.K.A. Andre 3000 is pretty funny, espscially the part Gwen called herself "bubble pop electric chick". Luxurious which is the next single, well I think not really good as the singles before, but it's pretty Europe-techno-tasted beat songs. The other tracks seems try to catch Gwen's funny and pop-py taste of music, whether with old-techno (The Real Thing), or with semi-Chinese-modern-dance (Serious), or with a beautiful duet of peace (Long Way To Go). This album is definitely one of album of the year (Grammy's choice is right and I hope Gwen will win it on 8th Feb 2006).
Disc #2 Rating: +++* 3 1/2 stars
Much more catchy music...That's the right thing of the bonus disc. The remixes in this have really different beats than the original version. The Jacques Lu Cont's WYWF? Dub&Mix are really cool. Mix some dancefloor-beats, Japanesse, and ticking clock is really cool. Pretty catchy and great for album opening. The live tracks is no big, just some part in the songs Gwen's voice really weird. Her voice sounds like a cat screaming on the catwalk. But the live tracks still good, if you want to hear the other versions of the songs. The Hollatronik and Photek Remix are really cool. Modern dance beat and classy really mixed up.
The Last track is Dance Hollaback. Well, for me this is the best remixes from the album and the reason why you must buy this album. The beat is really awesome. Tony Kanal remixed this song into kind of black-retro and adding Jamaican-rap into it. really awesome, really makes you dance hollaback!
//After all this is a really great repackage album. Gwen definitely can present the taste of her music along with the great producers. This is a really worth collection, you gotte have it!//

3 out of 5 stars What you waiting for?.......2005-01-01

Platinum blonde frontwoman Gwen Stefani is best known for the ska-pop sound in her band No Doubt. But for her solo debut, "Love Angel Music Baby," Stefani goes for a totally different sound -- bubblegummy eighties dancepop, a clubby, colorful, glitzy whirl full of Harajuku girls.

"What You Waiting For?" is the strongest single from here, where Stefani ticks off the seconds before launching into a danceable, self-addressed lecture: "Life is short/you're capable.../what you waiting for?" Stefani urges herself to "take a chance" while "you're still a super-hot female," all against her longings to get more fans in Japan.

"Harajuku Girls" is a kitschy ode to Japanese fashionistas (they get mentioned several times over the album), while the sugary "Bubble Pop Electric" with Andre 3000 is a goofy, sugary pop song. A few of the songs misfire, like interracial dating song "Long Way To Go," which becomes way too self-important. But mostly they revel in the sound of early Madonna tunes, with a new wave twist. There's also a Muzak version of "What You Waiting For," which is pretty worthless.

"Love Angel Music Baby" won't surprise anybody -- it's all in the style of the first single. It's sleek. It's sexy. It's a guilty pleasure, and it rarely pretends to be anything else. Basically it's not for anyone looking for high-quality music, but it's a fun diversion when you are dancing around your living room.

Stefani's voice isn't technically the best, but she can range from wispy to a throaty purr to a squeal. And her vocals get a pretty good workout here. The musical styles are more electronic than her previous work with No Doubt, taking on a more new wave sound. Think 21st-century Blondie, with a bit of funk thrown in.

The lyrics are simplistic in a dancefloor kind of way. They're meant to sound fun to the synth beats, not be deep -- "born to blossom/bloom to perish" are perhaps the strongest lines, as Stefani examines her own fragile popularity. Her sole effort at depth, "Long Way To Go" gets a bit too hamhanded. And it's Martin Luther King Jr., sweetie. Martin Luther was the guy who P.O.ed the Pope and formed the Lutheran church.

Gwen Stefani makes a fun guilty pleasure in "Love Angel Music Baby." It has light-as-air lyrics and poppy music, but it's worth a spin if you want something to dance to.
