After the September 11 attack, the staff of The Village Voice, the nation's largest alternative weekly newspaper, in an effort to help with the relief effort, began the creation of a compilation CD to benefit the victims of the World Trade Center attack. Today, the Voice is proud to announce the release of “Love Songs For NYC” a CD of exclusively original music featuring 18 brand-new songs that directly address the September 11 tragedy and aftermath. 100% of the profits from the sale of CD will be donated to The September 11 Fund.
Immediately after the attack, a call for music submissions was issued with full page ads in all Village Voice Media papers (The Voice, LA Weekly, Seattle Weekly, OC Weekly, Cleveland Free Times, Nashville Scene, and Minneapolis City Pages) asking songwriters to send demos to the Voice music department. With over 1,000 submissions received from signed and unsigned artists, the staff narrowed down the selections to 18 songs.
The CD is comprised of music from an eclectic mix of artists including: Moby, Cornershop, Mekons, Joseph Arthur, Moe Tucker, Andrew W.K., Hydraulic Funk, Ari Upp, Sheila Chandra, Hakim, Gogol Bordello, Uri Caine, Loudon Wainwright, Peter Stampfel, Atmosphere, Baaba Maal, Matthew Shipp, and Lenny Dee.
