James and Alison Shaw, the brother-sister songwriting team from Portsmouth, England that's best known as CRANES, are not without pretensions: They originally planned to make Loved a double album with half devoted to a musical interpretation of The Flies, the expressionist play by tortured French novelist Jean Paul Sartre. That plan was shelved (they had to settle for cover art by French painter Edgar Degas), and instead, their third album delivers 11 oddly seductive pop songs that mix brutally powerful drumming, a Cocteau Twins-like wall of shimmering guitars, and the lovable little-girl-on- helium vocals of Alison Shaw. --Jim DeRogatis
Product Description
Loved is a mysterious and artistic experience, effortlessly standing aside from prevailing music trends. The band's self-production skills continued to improve, evidenced by the sometimes elaborate arrangements; if the core of Cranes' music revolves around intentionally basic rhythms and melodies repeated as mantras, it's always been the focused delivery that puts everything together. BMG. 2005.

Customer Reviews:
Good fun........2004-08-03
These import two-fers' are terrific. They feature terrific sound quality and great packaging. The albums included are:
THAT STUBBORN KINDA FELLOW (1963) ***1/2 (3.5 out of 5) Marvin's first real release (not counting the supper club flop THE SOULFUL MOODS OF MARVIN GAYE) is possibly the grittiest and most soulful album that Motown ever released in the sixties. This lends the disc a little more cohesiveness than the majority of the label's releases during the decade. The three singles are classics and include the seminal hits "Stubborn Kinda Fellow" (#46 Pop, #8 R&B), "Hitch Hike" (#30 Pop, #12 R&B), and "Pride And Joy" (#10 Pop, #2 R&B). As for the album tracks, Marvin's rendition of "A Soldier's Plea" is almost unbearably moving and "Taking My Time" is a hidden gem. Like most Motown records of the era, THAT STUBBORN KINDA FELLOW is expertly crafted and extremely pleasurable, even if it's not always memorable.
HOW SWEET IT IS TO BE LOVED BY YOU (1965) *** (3 out of 5) This popular release is little more spotty and generic than THAT STUBBORN KINDA FELLOW, however HOW SWEET IT IS contains enough quality material to be a good listen. The title song hit #6 on the Pop chart (his best selling single at that date) and is one of the most infectious singles to ever hit the airwaves. The disc's other hits are the driving "You're A Wonderful One" (#15 Pop), the soothing "Try It Baby" (#15 Pop), and the rocking "Baby Don't You Do It" (#27 Pop), all of which are great releases. The superb "No Good Without You" makes excellent use of it's killer refrain, and Marvin's vocals on "Now That You've Won Me" and "Forever" are particularly lovely. The rest of the record's material is typical Motown filler: nothing special, but perfectly listenable.
together a Good Album.......2002-07-12
these Albums Combined make a Good Album but as two albums seperate I'd say slightly better than Average."Wherever I Lay My Hat,Stubbonr Kind of Fellow,Hitch Hike,How Sweet it is to be Loved by you,etc.. brings this Set up.He hadn't quite found His Voice fully here but He could make a Song His Own already&you are Hearing a Artist just getting Warmed up onto a Legendary Career.

JUST THE BEST!.......2006-02-11
I was giving this album by an old girlfriend of mine when it first came out and I still listen to it at least once a year. I don't remember the girl, but love the album. Flawless and timeless! I also saw them live and they blew me away!
Wonderful Album.......2001-10-13
Amazing, dense arrangements (including fiddle, mandolin, organs, harmonica and accordion, but always sticking to the rock/pop genre), clever and interesting songs. High-energy and highly recommended.
There is no point of going on if you don't own this!.......2001-01-20
This is the first recording of The Wonderstuff that I ever bought, and it was so amazing that I immediately went out and bought their two previous releases without a blink of the eye! This album is so good, it humbles and stuns the listener.Mission Drive has got to be one of the most incredible songs I have ever heard in my life, with Inertia following right behind it. Caught In My Shadow was the first song I ever heard, (actually I saw the video on 120 Minutes back in 1991), and I'll never forget where I was and how I was riveted to the TV! These guys are so talented, it's just a shame that they never received proper recognition here in the States.
Young americans, this one's for you.......2000-11-28
The wonder stuff known, if ever, for their early 90's single 'Dizzy'w/ Vic Reeves.'Never Loved Elvis' is thier 2nd album and their most colorful mixture of pop melodies, loud guitars, sneering lyrics, and touches of dance music, which is sometimes brilliant and sometimes banal, but never bad. Almost unknown in the U.S., but very promising in the U.K. a decade ago, with their basic, punk and new wave-inspired pop/rock, NLE was backed with handfull of top 10 singles like: 'Welcome to the cheap seats', 'Size of a cow', 'Caught in my shadow', all in the great tradition of "catchy & simple".Altogether, this one delivers the goods and making the days look much better. Not a must but very recommended.

"Father of Girls".......2006-03-18
Perry Como had so many hits...no one CD collection captures them all. This release is notable in its good across-the-board, span-the-years program on a single disc. I chose upon this item over many "greatest hits" packages due to the inclusion of the magnificent "Father of Girls" -- a unique, heartfelt tune about a very special and delicate relationship, delivered by Perry with sensitivity and soul. It is moments like these that makes Perry so special.

An Australian Only Double CD Set of Willie's Greatest Songs Spanning his Career. This Compilation Will Only Ever Be Released in Australia.
Customer Reviews:
Mostly the Great American Songbook.......2003-01-25
Willie's recordings are many and varied, but you won't find much of his country music here. There are a few songs here that date from the sixties, seventies and eighties, but most are more than half a century old. Always on my mind, Crazy, Blue eyes crying in the rain, To all the girls I've loved before, Turn me loose and let me swing, Bridge over troubled water, Help me make it through the night, I can see clearly now and City of New Orleans are the newer songs here, but there are other collections where you will find a stronger representation of Willie's contemporary music.
Many of the remaining tracks come from his four albums of standards - Stardust, Somewhere over the rainbow, Without a song and What a wonderful world. This set came with a sticker proclaiming that every track from Stardust is included. However, September song (which was on the original Stardust album) is omitted. I assume that was by error, but I've got Stardust anyway, so that didn't bother me. The overall feel of the album is very mellow - only occasionally picking up the tempo (and then mostly on the newer songs).
This is an excellent collection, originally released only in Australia, from where I imported it (about a year later), only to discover about a month later that it was given a British release. I think this might have been an even better collection had it been devoted exclusively to the old standards. Some fans of those songs may be deterred from buying this because of the other stuff, although I hope not.

Customer Reviews:
Her First English Album.......2005-04-22
I love Alsou's particular smooth voice and I really like this album though I think It has much ballads, but she really shines on them. She is going to release her second English album in June 2005 called "Inspired",it seems to be an amazing album.
01.-Before You Love Me:10.In one word:Catchy. You will sing this for weeks!.It was #24 in Uk without promotion,a shame. It did very well in Russia.
02.-What Your Girl Don't Know:10.R&B track with great beats and vocals.I like the lyrics too.
03.-He Loves Me:10.Another R&b-pop track with amazing beats vocals and lyrics. It's so catchy. It was her third single but it was canceled in Uk for some reason. The video is cool.
04.-Let It Be Me:8,5.This is an upbeat-ballad song. The lyrics are great and the vocals are awesome too.
05.-3 Strikes:7.This is another semi-uptempo song. Not particularly slow or fast. The lyircs are great too,but the songs lack something,in the chorus.
06.-Teardrops:10.Amazing ballad written by her. This song will also be in her second album, but with different vocals and beats. The lyrics are beautiful and I really love her voice here.
07.-Not Over Yet:9.Another amazing ballad. It starts pretty much like "My All" from Mariah Carey.Great vocals and lyrics.
08.-Butter Wouldn't Melt:10.Amazing R&b-pop song. The lyrics are well written and funny.I love hearing this song because of its cathiness and its ironic lyrics. My personal fave.
09.-100% Natural:6,25.Upbeat song,is not the best song at all,the lyrics are so-so and the song is catchy but nothing memorable.
10.-Solo:10.Her Eurovision track was #2 in the song contest.A shame. The song is very catchy and the lyrics are tight, even though the vocals are kinda weird.
11.-Never A Day Goes By:7,25.Semi uptempo-ballad song.I don't really like the chorus,is ok I guess.The lyrics and vocals are cool.
12.-Break The Silence:8,75.Spanish guitar influenced song.Is a fast ballad. The lyrics are beautiful and I really love her vocals.
13.-Now I Know:9,5.Great ballad song.Amazing vocals and lyrics. Is the best ballad here with "Teardrops".Could make you cry too.Vocally,is her best song.
14.-My Number 1:7,5.A Duet with Enrique Iglesias.I hate his songs and his voice but the song is pretty and their voices work well together.
Before you loved me.......2005-03-17
I think Its a really good CD. Its fun,it makes you want to dance.
The only thing I didnt like about some songs they make you sad. Its a good CD to give it 5 stars. It makes you think about who you love or like. And the experience you have been through.
I like the song Before you loved me.Because its fun and happy and sad.
Alsou or Ancy.......2002-12-28
I bought the album from amazon.de, it's in English, but only available in Germany?
Man what a voice this girl has, even her Russian songs are gorgeous, and their free to download from her website.
Songs like Teardrops, and Now I Know just make you want to cry
buy it now
Why doesnt Amazon.com carry the full album?.......2001-07-29
I came across this artist on the World Music Awards and had to have "Before you loved me".. Great track and even better remixes. After searching for a very long time, i found a copy of the full CD "Alsou" and want to know why Amazon.com doesnt carry it? Its awesome.. I recommend starting with this single and searching out a copy of the full disc. Britney has nothing on this girl! She can sing.
ALSOU Rules.......2001-07-03
Alsou is a very talented and beautiful singer from Russia, she has a great voice and her song Before You Love Me is the BEST. Perhaps her music can be compared to Britney's but she sings so much better than her (sorry Brit, luv ya but you can't sing!). I saw her on television at the World Music Awards and loved her performance. If you like pop or just music, buy this CD and you won't be disappointed. GO ALSOU!
