Wise words and cool tunes.......2007-03-28
I guess the most obvious way to differentiate Harry Manx from his peers is his use of Indian instruments, and in paricular the Mohan Veena. Well, actually what's unique and very refreshing is the way he integrates those sounds into a fusion of Blues and Americana that remind me of some of the other artists I love, but also stands out from them.
For all the exoticism of the instrumentation, Harry's songs are actually pretty accessible, and like the best songs are a bit mysterious in their actual meaning but give you a feeling that he's really saying something. Don't Take His Name Away is a terrific song about life and death and memory. I wonder who it's about.
Another standout song is A Single Spark, which has the trademark Indian sound mixed with an emotive blues sound and an intriguing, memorable lyric.
There's not a bad song on the album, though It Takes a Tear, a duet with a singer who's not really interesting enough, comes closest to being one you might want to skip past.
I like the production, even though it sounds at times almost too clean and bright for Blues. The production favours the sound of the Indian instruments, and the couple of instrumentals using those instruments sound fantastic.
On the whole, one of the best albums I've heard for some time. I can see I'll be enjoying this one for years to come.
Love it and Love Harry Manx.......2007-01-10
I love this CD, I love Harry Manx, he is so blusey and his voice and music is undescrible, I recommend this CD for every blues lover and sitar music lover. Highly recommended.
exotic, yet strangely timeless.......2006-05-17
While most musicians are content to work within the accepted boundaries of their chosen style, lap-slide guitarist Harry Manx likes to color way outside the lines. His crayons? Soulful, raspy vocals, poetic lyrics, and the whining drones and mysterious melisma of Indian music. In addition to picking Hawaiian-style flat-top à la David Lindley, Ben Harper, or Kelly Joe Phelps, Manx plays the mohan veena-a 20-string archtop developed by Indian slide wizard Vishwa Mohan Bhatt. East/West fusions can sometimes sound forced or awkward, but Manx-who studied with Bhatt for five years-dodges that bullet. On Mantras for Madmen, mandolin, banjo, harmonica, tamboura, tabla, and haunting female voices swirl seamlessly around intricate slide melodies, creating an exotic, yet strangely timeless sound. Drawing from blues, ragas, and the story-telling heritage of British Isles folk music, Manx conjures songs that are as bewitching as they are unique.
another level for Harry.......2006-01-20
I've been listening to Manx' blues ever since I caught him in concert here in New Mexico. "Road Ragas" being my favorite until this new release which really showcases his talent at writing songs, let alone the unique Indian instrument (I would write the name but would slaughter the spelling-a sitar/guitar cross)he plays them to. Don't let Mantra in the title sway you into thinking this is true sanskrit mantra (which I also listen to) but I think it is his way of honoring his unique East/West style and he does have a terrific sense of humor which also prevails in his songs. Good go Harry-come back to New Mexico soon!

Aside from a loyal cadre of fanatics, the record-buying public has not been kind to this long-running band's mountain of concept albums. The formula of pomp and pretense sours somewhere between the loftiness of its conception and the bare tediousness of its execution. While potentially as fun as Alice Cooper or Queen, the story-rock of Savatage is forced into a tight metal funnel that squeezes much of the joy out of the proceedings. Then again, the driving gait of "Commissar" and the 10-minute "Morphine Child" don't invite anything but the most dire and maudlin interpretation. Somewhere in here there is magnificence, but it may be too tightly wound to unravel. This album marks the return to the microphone of bandleader Jon Oliva, who drove Savatage to great power-metal heights during the 1980s, and he brings his honesty, but not his former energy. --Ian Christe
Album Description
Eagerly anticipated new album combines the classic sound of earlier albums like Sirens, Hall Of The Mountain King and the EP Dungeons Are Calling, while remaining faithful to the orchestral direction of more recent releases, Gutter Ballet and Dead Winter Dead, which they owe to a large extent to returning producer Paul O'Neill (Aerosmith). Featuring guitarist Al Pitrelli and founding member Jon Oliva. Poets & Madmen is a concept album which follows three kids who unwittingly break into a closed-down psychiatric hospitalwhere they discover a cabinet with old patients' files. 12 tracks. 2001 release.

Actually, It's Not That Bad.......2005-08-30
The many bad reviews on this site made me not want to buy this album at all. Only seeing it used on Amazon, and reading several other really good reviews convinced me to order this. At first I wasn't impressed, but then, it blew me away. Actually every Savatage album since Gutter Ballet, except Handful of Rain, has blown me away (Handful of Rain was good, don't get me wrong, it just didn't have as big of an effect on me). Jon Oliva is back on vocals, and he does a pretty good job. He uses only a growl; no high screams of the earlier albums. While he sounds pretty good, there are some parts that really make me miss Zak Stevens, and Oliva sounds strained in some parts. Al Pitrelli is gone at this point to Megadeth, although he plays some guitar solos (for a full list of solos Pitrelli did on the album, check out the FAQ on Savatage's website), Chris Caffery takes over in the writing process, cowriting nine of the songs. For the solos, Caffery uses Al Pitrelli's Les Paul, so there's only a subtle difference in the playing. This is a concept album, although much more loosely based on the story in the liner notes than Savatage's previous two albums.
1. Stay With Me Awhile 9/10- Good song to kick off the album. I love that guitar interlude in the middle.
2. There in the Silence 9.5/10- Starts off with an eerie synth melody. Probably has Caffery's best guitar work of the whole album even though it doesn't have a solo per say; there are a number of parts with no singing that Caffery fills with incredible and catchy, crunchy guitar riffs and runs.
3. Commissar 10/10- Starts out with trademark piano licks but is really unlike anything Savatage has done before. Features IMO the only successful usage of Oliva's rap-singing and a 3 (!) part guitar solo in the end. For those who are curious it goes Pitrelli/Caffery/Pitrelli.
4. I Seek Power 9.5/10- I love the harmonic guitar leads in the verses, but Oliva sounds strained in the chorus. The guitar solo starts out great but is too short.
5. Drive 5/10- Unlike anything Savatage has done before, but this experiment was a partial failure. Not really bad, just not that good.
6. Morphine Child 10/10- Progressive metal fans will love this 10:00+ song. Great intro and riff as well as a fantastic solo in the middle. Savatage uses the layered vocals similar to Zak Stevens only instead of Stevens they use a choir made of the entire band, Paul O'Neill, and a couple of others that I can't remember.
7. Rumor 10/10- Another song that is like nothing I have heard Savatage do before. It is half acoustic guitar based folk and half heavy metal. Pitrelli does the solo and leads in this one, but Caffery is the star once again with a several great riffs. The lyrics here are the best I've heard from Savatage since "St. Patrick's."
8. Man In The Mirror 10/10- Oliva sounds great here during the quieter parts, he's actually singing instead of yelling. The lyrics fall prey to some cliches, but for the most part, this is a great song.
9. Surrender 8/10- Good guitar work in the first part, but the ending is what hurts this song, especially with the piano-saturated part where Oliva repeats "See the show!"
10. Awaken 5/10- Weakest song on the album, comes close to filler.
11. Back To Reason 7/10- Decent song, but I was hoping Savatage had finally ditched their ending ballad formula after I heard "Hourglass," but I was wrong. If you like Savatage's earlier ballads (Alone You Breathe, Believe), you'll love this one.
12. Shotgun Innocence 7.5/10- Decent song from the Edge of Thorns era, with Chris Oliva on guitar and Zak Stevens on vocals. If you like nostalgia, you'll love this song just for the fact that it has those previous two people playing, although the song itself isn't anything great.
I'm tired of bands that were popular in the 20th Century releasing albums in the 21st Century saying that it's a "back to the roots" album, especially when its not. This is not "back to the roots." It's heavier and more riff-based, but it's closer to "Wake of Magellan" than "Hall of the Mountain King."
Contrary to what many people say, this is one of Savatage's better albums. It is more consistant than "Wake of Magellan" and has more lasting power than "Dead Winter Dead." I can't say that this is their best ever, although I'm not 100% sure why. Zak's departure has a part in that, plus there's a noticable lack in extended solos, and Al Pitrelli IMO is a critical aspect of the band's sound, his guitar has the best sound of any guitarist in the history of rock/metal (except maybe Slash). Still, if you can find it, this is a great album. Highly Recommended.
P.S. Chris Caffery is more talented than you might have originally thought. His work here shows it, but also look to his solo album and his stunning work with Doctor Butcher.
3 stars on the Savatage Scale is a 10 on typical rock scale.......2004-09-27
Unlike so many of the other Savatage albums, this one lacks infectiousness. Hall of the Mountain King, Steets, Dead Winter Dead, Wake of Megellan and many others all got wore out by me playing them over and over. Poets did not match that. I too think that Zak Steven has a great voice, and is missed by the legions, but that is not why this album does not match Savatages lofty standards. I think the songs on this album were forced into the mold of the 'concept'. Savatage fell into the trap that has caused so many other concept albums by other bands to fail. Savatage had avoided singing ridiculous lyrics in order to tell a story on albums like 'Streets' but on 'Poets' they did not.
If you're an old fan of Savatage get 'Poet's you'll love the music, if not the lyrics. If you're a new fan who's heard about the legend of Savatage, buy 'Dead Winter Dead', you'll love it. I'd hate for someone to miss this great band because they pick the wrong album to buy first.
As for the editor's review that says that sales are the measure of the worth of a band, I'd like to say that you don't know what you're talking about.
Savatage produces masterpieces, not everyone appreciate a masterpiece.
Powerful album with great sound.......2004-05-11
It was going to be hard for Savatage to follow up In the Wake of Magellan, but Jon Oliva and company, minus Zac Stevens, were able to do just that. Don't believe that weak review at the top of the page by amazon's "professional" reviewer; this album rocks and is just as powerful and melodic as any of their releases with Chris Caffery on guitar. And yes, every song is damned excellent and Oliva'a voice is not just satisfactory but outstanding. Now, I want to clear something up, I gave the Magellan album a five star rating too but to be honest I like that one slighty more. The thing is, this one is a five star album but Magellan was just slighty more enjoyable to me. Any fan of that album WILL enjoy this one as well, however but maybe not quite as much but trust me where else are you going to get this kind of quality power metal? There are no bands out there that can touch Savatage.
a let down.......2003-10-29
Ugh! Jon OLiva is the chief of the band, but Zak Stevens's vocals blow him out of the water, that's for sure, so it's a pity that Zak left the band. Jon's voice is really annoying here.
Also, Pitrelli was totally a part of the band by now, his exit was also a severe blow to Savatage.
POets and Madmen, of course, it's not failure, because THIS IS SAVATAGE! But, it cannot be positively compared to THE WAKE OF MAGELLAN or DEAD WINTER DEAD.
Now this one rocks!.......2003-10-09
Poets & Madmen rocks way harder than WAKE OF MAGELLAN, the only shame is this album is sans Zak Stevens, which would have been the real basis for the title poets & madmen, which would feature both Zak and Jon on vocals, each vocal style mixing superbly. But you gotta work with what you got, and there's no one I'd rather have here than Jon. The songs kick serious @$$ Especially on "Awaken" and "Surrender" you can tell this is definately a more guitar rock oriented album than before. Serious power on display. Not as catchy as EDGE OF THORNS or POWER OF THE NIGHT, it makes up for grooves in power and just plain awesome guitar solos from Al Pitrelli? Is that him I think it is but Chris Caffery as well. Man I can't tell you how much I love Savatage. This is a great album and belongs in CD trays across the World! WARNING: For this album to be effective it must be played at full volume.

Good early King's X sound.......2006-11-03
If you are wanting some more early King's X albums but have them all, then get this. Excellent production, heavy guitar, and fantastic melody.
ATOMIC GREATNESS!!!.......2005-11-02
Years ago, a new wave of metal (consisting of crunchy riffs, incredibly tight figures and stupendous 4-part vocal harmonies) eminated out of the Houston (Katy, to be more specific), Texas area. In the early '90s, great bands such as King's X and the Galactic Cowboys emerged somewhere between the fall of the hair-metal movement but immediately before the Seattle Alternative explosion. Atomic Opera was another great band to rise out of the same mold. 'For Madmen Only' was their first major release and put them on the map to stand up along with their other Katy, Texas counterparts.
What makes this recording so special was the talents of producer Sam Taylor who produced perhaps the better periods of the Galactic Cowboys and King's X recordings as well. Falling somewhere between the heavy side of the Cowboys but the harmonic and production (sound) side of King's X, 'For Madmen Only' is a great addition to anyone who cares to hear a tremendous vocally-dominant metal band. Tracks like "JoyRide," "Justice" and "Blackness" are superb rockers with choruses containing walls of vocal bliss and catchy (but heavy) hooks. And perhaps Atomic Opera's stronger side is their ability to write slower (ballad?) songs like "This Side of the Rainbow" and the very emotional "December."
Why 4 stars? First off, the recording isn't completely consistent. While the aformentioned songs are really special, some others on this recording are forgettable. Additionally, though incredibly strong in the studio, I've heard from more than 1 source that (despite the limited touring they've done) they are a very poor live band. Unfortunately, that doesn't fair well with what is done from a huge production-standpoint in the studio. Currently, leader Frank Hart is putting together a solo record and Atomic Opera still exists to some extent. They released 2 more CD's after this one which were mediocre at best. However, if you enjoy this one, try tracking down 'Alpha and Oranges.' Also produced by Sam Taylor, 'Alpha' was the demo release of songs which landed A.Opera their recording contract. In some ways, I actually think 'Alpha' may be a more consistent record in regards to songwriting! However, for a really great listen, check out 'For Madmen Only!'
OLD SCHOOL ROCK/METAL.......2005-06-13
I HEARD THE TRACK "JUSTICE" ON THE HEADBANGERS BALL SO MANY YEARS AGO.IT WAS A SOUND THAT STUCK WITH ME AND I HAD TO GET THE ALBUM(CASSETTE). I EVENTUALLY WORE IT OUT AND IT BROKE.THE BAND IS VERY COMPIRABLE TO KINGS X ,WHOM THEY HAVE TOURED WITH.THERE IS A COMPLETE BLEND OF SLOW SONGS ALONG WITH A NICE CRUNCHY METAL. GREAT GUITAR WORK AND SOUND ON THIS AND ALL THEIR ALBUMS.BUY THIS ALBUM!!!!!

Another cool Dream Theater side project.......2007-06-23
Like most people who bought this disc, I picked it up solely due to the presence of Dream Theater vocalist James LaBrie. To be honest, I have no idea where he found the time to participate on this album, given his touring with Dream Theater, his solo career, and contributions to the Frameshift and Ayreon projects. Fortunately for Tim Donahue, LaBrie not only shows up, but delivers a very solid performance as well.
Donahue is something of a fretless guitar hero, though unlike some other guitar hero types who I won't (Yngwie) name (Malmsteen) here, he actually writes good songs, not just vehicles for complicated solos. The progressive metal on Madmen & Sinners is like a more melodic, streamlined version of Dream Theater (or a more complex version of LaBrie's solo material). It's pretty heavy hitting stuff, though always melodic and with the occasional moment of tranquility (see: Wildest Dreams).
I can't see many Dream Theater fans having a problem with this disc. It's technical enough to please progressive metal fans, and it manages to avoid the kind of instrumental pyrotechnics that might overshadow LaBrie's vocal performance. All told, this is my favorite of LaBrie's many side projects that year.
NOTE: If you like what you hear on Madmen & Sinners, you might want to check out Donahue's Into the Light album. Musically it's very similar to this album, and it features former Hurricane (and current Foreigner) vocalist Kelly Hansen.

The best single disc compilation.......2007-01-17
Until the release of Moonlighting, this was the best compilation of Roger Daltrey's solo work. However, if you're only a casual fan, and don't want Moonlighting's two full discs, Martyrs and Mad Men is the choice for you.
This album demonstrates Daltrey's wide ranging vocal abilities - hard rock (Free Me), mellow pop (One Man Band), and ballads (Without Your Love & Ocean's Away). He can do it all, and despite some poor songwriting, he does it all well. Having been a big fan of the Who since I first started listening to music, it was easy to take Daltrey's talents for granted, but this cd truly shows why he is one the best there has ever been.
The only negative aspect of the album is the lack of anything from his last album (Rocks in the Head). I also question why they would use the title "Martyrs and Madmen" without actually including that song on the disc, but that really doesn't matter. The songs that are included are a great representation of Daltrey's career and talents. Even if he never had a really big hit on his own, there are plenty of fine songs included on this cd to please rock fans.
The Little Singer.......2004-05-30
Ive always loved Roger Daltrey's vocals in with The Who.
This CD does a lot to establish his title as one of the great rock vocalists. Its easy to see the amazing range he had as a singer, departing from his usual Who screams for softer, more quirky songs.
The songs are catchy, but just dont compete with the quality of Townshend's lyrics. It may be unfair to judge his solo career against The Who, but there it is.
I do however still greatly enjoy this CD and listen to it often.(Thus the 3 star rating despite all my complaining)
It's more light and fun than his work with The Who, and i personally would enjoy listening to Roger sing just about anything. I do wish he had chosen some different song styles, but he was trying to stay as far away from Who-sounding music as possible.
My favorites are the upbeat 'One Man Band', the softer 'Giving it all away', the more Who-like 'Free Me', his biggest hit 'Without your Love', and finally the Townshend penned 'After the Fire'.
Truly the best Music!.......2002-09-17
As a true, true fan of the who i really mainly enjoyed listening to them for a) their sex appeal (yum! roger!) b) the lyrics (pete you are so talented!!!) and c) ROGER'S VOICE! I loved roger's voice so much i decided to buy this CD. Boy was it so worth the 17.84 i spent on it! He's music is amazing!!!!!!! I love his voice! Now that I'm done drooling over his voice I will rate his song from 1-10 obviously 10 being the higest.
1) One Man Band 9 (I love this song. The only reason i didn't give it a ten is because the chrous is a litle corny. but oh well huh because roger's voice shines! I love the lyrics "for three days now i haven't eaten at all...")
2) It's a hard life 9.7 (I really, really love the beginning of this song! It is so super! This whole song is truly great and roger sings his heart out!)
3) Giving it all away 10 (a great, great song. i love everything about this song)
4) Thinking 9 (great song. love the chrous)
5) World Over 10 (Probably my favorite song on this album! I love it! Especially in the chrous when roger sing "The world over..ah aha aha.."
6)Ocean's Away 8 (A good slow song. I just wish there was more of a chrous. i mean there is one but it could be better in m opinion)
7) One of the boys 7 (I don't really mind this song, i like it but its weird lyrics and roger shouts a lot which i don't mind in The Who but in his solo career? No. Roger you need to sing like Micheal Crawford in "The Phantom of the Opera" (which Roger does usually!!)
8)Avenging Annie 7.8 (I like how roger sings this song. he sings it so well. he even admits he does! but i don't like the lyrics that much)
9)Say it ain't so, Joe 8 (Like Avenging Annie I like how Roger sings the song but not the lyrics as much)
10)Parade 8 (Great song good lyrics. I think there should of been more lyrics and roger sing louder)
11) Free Me 6.8 (I do like this song but i wish the beginning he didn't yell or in the end...Otherwise he sings it well!)
12) Without Your Love 10 (I love this song! It is truly, truly a wonderful song! Everything about this song is good: the lyrics ROGERS VOICE everything!!)
13)Waiting for my friend 9 (I really love this song. But i didn't give it a ten because i think i heard this song (someone else singing it) as a country song)
14) Walking in my Sleep 9.6 (A great, great song!)
15) Parting would be painless 8 ( I like this song but it doesn't sound like roger at all. i checked my batteries in my CD player but he still sounded different. though that could be good because he can shout and do anything with his voice! i love him!..sorry got carried away!)
16) After the fire 10 (an amazing, amazing song! The lyrics are beautiful and Roger really, really sings his heart out! I love the lyrics "..the heart grows older but never, ever learns"
17)Let me down easy 9.5 (I love this song! great lyrics, great chrous great vocals roger!!)
18)Pride You hide 9.8 (a great great song!! the chrous is amazing!!)
19) Under a Raging Moon 7 ( a good song but its long (though this is the short version))
20) Lover's storm 8 (great song, good lyrics.)
I truly, truly LOVE EVERY SONG! THEY ARE SO GOOD!!!!!!!!
"The Fire Still Burns....".......2002-08-15
A rock solid overview of Daltrey's solo work. From the popular "After The Fire" to the lesser known songs, this album ably demonstrates Daltrey's wideranging vocal style. The sheer power of "Free Me" will get the Who faithful to shout along and ballads like "Without Your Love" and "Say It Ain't So, Joe" will moisten the eyes of the most cynical critics. Great choices for this CD include some lesser-known work from the mid-80's "Walking in My Sleep" and "Parting Would Be Painless".....excellent songs that never received their due in an age of Culture Club-pop music. In my opinion, Roger Daltrey has always been one of the defining vocalists in rock....I submit this CD as Exhibit A.
the best of the best.......2000-06-25
if your a fan roger daltery you cant possibily go wrong with this ,,he has all the best of his solo efforts, and some extra tunes that you will never get tried of. it is going to say in my cd player for a very long, long time . buy it now, dont wait and you will thank me later keith

Cerquetti's Abigaille.......2003-09-06
First off, it should be known to the potential buyer that these are HIGHLIGHTS only. The mono sound is acceptable. Orchestra and chorus are average at best. The focus clearly is on Anita Cerquetti and her rendition of Abigaille. Even though in the booklet listing of tracks her name is omitted on the last cue point. I never heard this singer live. My first encounter with her voice was the studio GIOCONDA with del Monaco and Simionato and I liked it very much. As Abigaille I find her less convincing. The voice is beautiful and even. But she cannot convey Abigaille's high flying ambitions. She sounds noble most of the time. Never aggressive or infuriated or spiteful or menacing. Her repentance/dying scene is superficial. Which makes me wonder how often Miss Cerquetti may have had the chance to sing this role during her brief career and develop a feeling for it. At times she unexpectedly breaks a phrase to catch her breath, which I find somewhat irritating. And some climax seem "rushed". It's also a bit disappointing to me that the "Salgo gia" cabaletta gets no repeat. Guess such were the customs in those years, even for concert performances. I am pleased with Messrs. Dondi (in the title role) and Trama. Aside from their vocal qualities I find them very much in character. Also the singers of Fenena and Ismaele made me prick up my ears. Taken all in all, it's worthwhile to have this document. It will nicely supplement your studio NABUCCO. It's been a guilty pleasure of mine to compare Anita Cerquetti to Elena Suliotis and Dino Dondi to Tito Gobbi. And I wish that one day the Metropolitan Opera's NABUCCO with Leonie Rysanek under the baton of Thomas Schippers will appear on CD.
Good soloists, mediocre chorus, mono recording.......2002-10-24
The soloists are very good, but the chorus (key in this opera) is not on the same level. "Va Pensiero", the famous chorus piece, is very weakly done. The mono recording is only just adequate, OK for the soloists but flat and dull for stage presence and orchestration.
Blistering Vocalism.......2001-02-23
I first heard this rare pearl over 20 years ago on some faded third-generation cassette. Despite the dim sonics, I was thrilled to hear a diva who could actually negotiate the scorching roulades of Abigaille's music while still sounding like a singer and not some wounded forest creature howling in pain. Apart from Callas' live performance, we've had precious little to celebrate in recorded Abigailles. Sure, Scotto lit a few fires with her EMI pressing, but who wouldn't with a microphone clenched betweeen her teeth and the volume control nailed in place at the top of the control panel? For Heaven's sake, most of the current generation of half-wit dimpled divettes and "sound-enhanced" melody muffins could come off like an Abigaille with the right studio wizards calling the shots.
Cerquetti was the REAL thing. Like Margharita Roberti (listen to her in Christoff's ATTILA recording), Caterina Mancini and Fedora Barbieri, she came from a school of barnstormers who could shake the foundations of San Carlo or La Scala with truly schooled, crafted voices that emanated from the viscera and not the top of the larynx. Cerquetti was one of the Queens of Can Belto, and this new release in great sound is one of the treasures among re-releases of the past decade. I cast aside all conservatory terminology and call this type of performance a ripsnorter for the ages. With Callas, Cerquetti, and Dimitrova on disc, and the rare likes of Linda Roark-Strummer performing the role onstage, the other studio bunnies can turn their attention to gentler repertoire and give the rest of us a break.
Glorious Cerquetti in very good Nabucco.......2000-07-19
With the exception of the famous Hebrew's choir 'Va pensiero', the number of recordings of 'Nabucco' is notably low. One possible reason is the extraordinary vocal demand of the female leading role, King Nabucco's daughter Abigaille. Very few sopranos have succeeded with this difficult role: Maria Callas, Elena Suliotis, Renata Scotto, Ghena Dimitrova (arguably the best). Now we have a live recording of the great Italian soprano Anita Cerquetti, and she is probably so good as Dimitrova. Cerquetti was one of the greatest sopranos of the century, although she had an astonishingly short carreer (she retired at the age of 30!). Most of her (scarce) recordings are live performances, so having any single piece of recording of her extraordinary voice is a real must. This Nabucco was one of the last documents of her operatic carreer, and here she sounds so splendid that it remains a mystery why she decided to give up singing so soon afterwards. The rest of the cast is very good, especially the bass Ugo Trama as the High Priest Zaccaria. Dino Dondi is a good Nabucco, but his interpretation of the title role is not a reference. The orchestra sounds well, and the choir efficiently provides the necessary support. The quality of sound is good for the time (1960). To Summarize: This incredibly low priced recording has an adequate combination of the elements needed for a good Nabucco: A very good choir, an excellent bass (Trama), a good baritone (Dondi) and a star of stars as princess Abigail: the great soprano Anita Cerquetti. Enjoy it!
Verdi at the most exciting way!.......2000-01-05
You have to buy this recording! Cerquetti is our and Verdi's dreams Abigaille! If you really are an opera fan or have any concern about Verdi you need this recording. Go for it!

I am the Morphine Child.......2006-08-12
I suppose that after releasing two all-time classic albums like Dead Winter Dead and Wake of Magellan, and then losing vocalist Zak Stevens, Savatage's 2001 release Poets & Madmen was bound to disappoint.
Even though the dynamic duo of Jon Oliva and producer Paul O'Neill were still in place, the loss of such a dynamic vocalist (who left to form the very Savatage-sounding band Circle II Circle) had a big impact on the band's sound. Oliva found himself in the spotlight as lead vocalist once again, which meant the album had to be more aggressive to suit his singing style. Songs like "I Seek Power", "Drive" and "Awaken" are prime examples.
Despite being more aggressive and for the first time in quite a while not featuring any instrumental tracks, Poets & Madmen is still a very progressive album. Songs like "There in the Silence", "Commissar", and especially the 10+ minute "Morphine Child" are complex, well-orchestrated tracks that compare favorably with anything on Wake of Magellan or Dead Winter Dead. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that "Morphine Child" is one of the better Savatage songs ever released. It's also worth pointing out that "Back to Reason" was later used on a Trans-Siberian Orchestra album.
Poets & Madmen is a bit uneven, and doesn't work as well as a concept album as the band's prior releases. Overall though, this is a very solid album with more strong moments than weak ones. It may have disappointed Savatage fans initially, but it holds up surprisingly well after a few years, and should be considered one of the band's better albums. Though to be fair, I consider everything besides Fight for the Rock among the band's better albums!
NOTE: There are three different versions of Poets & Madmen, each with different bonus material.
The standard version, released by Nuclear Blast, features the bonus track "Shotgun Innocence" which is, to date, the last Savatage studio track to feature Zak Stevens on vocals.
The limited edition, released by SPV, comes in a neat box and features a live version of "Jesus Saves" as a bonus track, as well as a video clip for "Handful of Rain." "Shotgun Innocence" is not included.
The Japanese import has the same track listing as the SPV version, but without the fancy packaging. It's priced a LOT higher though.
I think the smart money is on the standard version. Live material and fancy packaging is nice, but I'll take a new Zak Stevens Savatage track any day.
A Musical Experience.......2001-11-22
Those familiar with Savatage may proceed to the next paragraph. All others may find useful to know that Savatage although under the wider umbrella of heavy metal, their music is much wider. To be more precise Savatage may be characterised as a Symphonic metal band, which means that they are influenced by classical music. Their music is variant, their themes ever changing and their moods haunting. Their music was a revelation to me. I finally found heavy music that can send you to the stars with poetic, passionate and sometimes philosophical lyrics. Perhaps the strongest and most prevalent characteristic of their music are the brilliantly mastered rhythm changes, 'waves' that bind the subtlety of a flower with the power of the sun...
Ok folks we are simply talking of amazing work here.
The story is based on a TRUE event and on the impact that event had for the person who witnessed it. The CD begins with the whole story narrated (8 pages) and then the songs follow. Note that the songs are dispersed with poetry that is in addition to the music. Thus once you turn to the first song page, you start to read the poetic introduction of teh story (before the first song).
"Gather around children as the light starts to die
and a story I'll weave you for a story have I...
where the living are dead and the dead quite alive
as they sleep in the shadows of us that survive"
soon an incredible musical journey begins to a far away world that is so close to each of us.
"Stay with me a while" is the name of the first song, that calls us to stay and listen to the story no matter how afraid we might be to face our responsibilities when we witness certain facts....
"Somewhere in this universe of lost forgotten dreams
the silence weaves a tapestry of once enchanted themes
the shadows listen carefully and question what it means...
---
Stay with me,
For the little night that's left to be
For a moment in a memory
That time cannot defile...
Stay with me
Where the night still offers amnesty
And the ending is still yet to be
tomorrow's unborn child...
Stay with me awhile"
Note that the above extracts are not selected for being exceptionally poetic or anything...
They just happen to be at the beginning of a conceptual album that is absolutely amazing till the very end... The lyrics are masterfully weaved with the music that gives them life. The music is unparalleled in passion and melodies, always following the rhythm and psychology of the story.
I undoubtedly recommend it to anybody who is even slightly fond of Classic rock music or heavy metal or even heavy classical pieces! As for people who happened to like a few other Savatage songs.... go for it! It will be an experience...
PS: We take what we give...The more time you give to this piece of art the more you will discover it...
More poetic than mad.......2001-04-29
Made in GER in 2001, Serial# SPV-088-72150, Playing Time 67:07
This limited edition features the album in a little box, and includes a sticker, a poster, a picture of a girl in a bikini (in the context of "Back To A Reason"), along with 2 bonus tracks: a live version of "Jesus Saves", with Zachary Stevens on vocals, which is unfortunate since he just can't deliver the passion of Jon Oliva on this one, plus the videoclip of "Handful Of Rain".
The lyrics of the new songs are included in the booklet. The album features Jon Oliva on vocals, and we get the "typical" sounds that make this band so easily identifiable. There's also a story in the booklet that helps putting this concept album into its context. I would suggest you read it prior to playing the disc: it's fairly long, and you'd otherwise miss out on the words to the songs written by long-time lyricist Paul O'Neill.
As for the tracks themselves, they have the usual balance of calm/energetic arrangements. However, this time out, I found the arrangements to be a bit stale: there's nothing much that's new in here, and even though the album grows on you, it lacks some of the syncopated punches so traditional with SAVATAGE. Thankfully, the live version of "Jesus Saves" is at the end of the disc, because it would have made every track on the record pale in comparison if it would have been placed first.
Good, but not for the novice. Oh, and I would suggest you replace the black CD tray with a clear one: it will reveal the Pulitzer-winning picture mentioned in the story...
HAIL THE MIGHTY 'TAGE!!!!!.......2001-04-13
The New Savatage release "Poets and Madmen" is an overall impressive and entertaining effort from Jon Oliva + co. Featuring some of the heaviest guitar work Savatage has ever done {no offense to Criss Oliva R.I.P.}this band can never seem to dissapoint it's fans. The main guitar duties are handled by Chris Caffery with some leads done by ex axeman Al Pitrelli, who has since left for Megadeth. Outstanding work !! for favorites I would have to list "Morphine Child,"Surrender",and "Commissar".
Another Great One.......2001-03-30
I have followed Savatage since 1986 and have felt that each new CD is better than the previous release. This isn't quite there. I love the CD and I think Jon Oliva has more emotion in his voice than Zak Stevens (although I like Zak too). The CD isn't as orchestrated as the previous two and lacks some of the vocal blending but is an extremely worthwile buy. It has a harder edge to it, won't disappoint new fans.
Commissar, Man in the Mirror and Morphine Child were my instant favorites. Drive would be my least favorite.
