About the Artist
Guitarist with the Spin Doctors.

Product Description
Here is Eric in his true form: straight-up rock-a-blues, with a little dash of funk. Even though Eric's success with the Spin Doctors was in the early '90's, his roots date back to the masters, resulting in a style that only Eric can call his own. Add to this his legendary talent as a songwriter and you have Eric at his best - funky-bluesy and to the point.

This album, produced by Schenkman and Eddie Kramer of Jimi Hendrix fame, also shows off Eric's prowess as a lead vocalist. In the true tradition of rock 'n' roll you'll find this to be a timeless piece of music.

5 out of 5 stars Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

5 out of 5 stars Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

3 out of 5 stars Frank's view.......2006-08-19

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Best I've heard in a long time........2007-06-01

I haven't bought many albums recently because there just hasn't been anything that I liked. But after looking through a friends CD collection, and popping this one in, I knew I had to have it.

Every one of the songs has a message, but they're not too obvious. They're filled with emotion, but they're not "emo".
A dumb sidenote: this would make the perfect soundtrack for a zombie movie.

The lyrics of Autopilot Off are alot of the times very deep and intelligent. Inside the booklet of the album are illustrated pictures that represent the metophor's for the lyrics of each song. The way the drums are played, are similar to the drums and drum beats of the band "The Offspring". Production wise, the band has a driveing, inergatic flow. Autopilot Off are the tyle of band that is considersd to be called punk revival. They bombine the new sound of modern pop punk, (NOT EMO) with the more classic sound of the early and mid-90's.

3 out of 5 stars Has its moments..........2005-02-20

I pretty much bought this album on a whim because I saw an extensive bus ride coming my way in the near future and wanted something new to enjoy on the way. Just so happened that was about the time Make a Sound was released, and it was pretty cheap. Without any thought I picked the album up, remembering that old Autopilot Off was pretty good. I noticed that they were now on Island records, so I got the expected smashing of huge hooks and friendly alternative you'd expect from the label behind Hoobastank and Sum 41 (both terrible, terrible bands).

The album starts off with the title track, and its pleasantly catchy, as the high points of the album are. The second track "clockwork" is one of the highlights for its engaging melody. I need not rate much of the disc on anything but how catchy something is because that is obviously how the album is built. It doesn't try and outdo itself except on each succeeding melody. A slower moment, "I Know you're waiting" is actually worth noticing because it is slightly cool compared to the generic pop punk songs it is surrounded by. Not to say the album isn't entertaining at all. The lead single "What I Want" is phenomenally catchy, and if that's what you are after you'll eat this song up. Really, it's pretty good. "Byron Black" is my last favorite track on the album, it's just all around good too.

Where did the stars go? Could it possibly be less than 5 stars if I love all those songs? Simply put, the filler is less than entertaining. The filler songs are just boring and tedious. Really about 9 of the songs are listenable, but that just doesn't do it for me because it throws the album off whenever you are just like, ewwww this is really bad pop punk. Overall Autopilot Off threw some pretty catchy melodies on here and it pretty much rocks all over itself the whole length. In my opinion it's a little too long and slow paced for its own good, they need to pick it up a notch if they ever want to regain ground on the better punk bands out there.

Mainstream crowd, go nuts, this is the kind of stuff you love. It's accessable, it's got some catchy singles, it's everything you could possibly want. I don't want to say I wish I hadn't bought the album, but it does leave quite a bit to be desired (except when I'm rocking out to the few select really good songs).

1 out of 5 stars more pop punk junk.......2005-01-06

boy these guys suck. i heard them on the Daredevil soundtrack and then i saw them at a show. all their songs sound the same. i'm sure 14 year old girl like them because they are cute. the good thing is we'll never have to hear from these guys because this Sum 41, Good Charlotte crap is almost over, and thankfully Autopilot Off was too late in the game to join. I guess they'll have to keep rocking on at their parent's house forever. losers.

4 out of 5 stars The singing of angels.......2005-12-20

Las Rubias del Norte of Brooklyn make wonderful music that takes the listener on a pleasant journey through past popular styles that our grandparents would surely recognize, all the while making it new through the unforced, unfiltered purity of the delivery of lead vocalists Allysa Lamb and Emily Hurst. These two weave pure magic from their hoary catalogue of ancient rumbas, Cuban pop hits, and dusty old cowboy tunes. Against lithe arrangements from the band their light pure sopranos twine and trill like spilled silver. This is their first record, self produced, but it doesn't sound like it. They've obviously been paying their dues and honing their very special sound and songbook. The only reason for the lack of a fifth star is the relative brevity of this recording clocking in at around 30 or so minutes, that and that one of the tracks unwisely turns the vocal over to one of the guys in the band. An upcoming release is soon to follow as they show signs of outgrowing the tiny Brooklyn bar where they have been a fixture. They've got a lot of great old songs up their sleeves and the band supports our two angels superbly. Watch 'em. They're gonna make it!

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The highest quality performance.......1999-03-13

The music on this recording presents a typical example of a semi-opera, popular in Britain in Purcell's time. Semi-operas were based on a dramatic spoken play, and were accompanied by "incidental" music (dances and masques). It is this incidental music that usually finds its way onto a disc. This recording follows this convention. What distinguishes this recording is its high quality. Collegium Musicum 90 and Richard Hickox are experts in baroque music. The soloists include the biggest names in English vocals. Even the two additional tenors, brought in to merely double the voices in two places, are not just anybody, but Mark Padmore and Ian Bostridge (!). That tells you something. The biggest highlights include the Wood-god duet in Act V of Dioclesian, and the soprano song "Since from my dear Astrea's sight" which is placed in an appendix because musicologists don't seem to know where exactly it originally belonged. This song, which seems to speak of a man's, rather than woman's, anguish over the lost love, concludes with the most wrenching words: "alas, with weeping eyes, And bleeding heart I lie Thinking on her whose absence 'tis That makes me wish to die." Isn't that beautiful?

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST MAKE UP RECORD???.......2006-10-11

This is the best Make-Up record by far, recorded in 2000 just before they broke up.
Their live shows were always the highlight for me and the other live records just didn't capture the sound in the same way. Sure they're cool, wiuth good between song patter and presenting the IDEA of the group, but this one is totally rocking and exciting. The songs are reworked from original versions; THEY LIVE BY NIGHT sounds housy almost and WADE IN THE WATER sounds straight up like P Funk.
This one also features the line-up they had at the end, with Alex Minoff on second guitar and back up vocals.
That means more James Canty keyboards--the solos are unrelenting. The ferocity has to be heard.
What else? Shrrieking, basslines that rule, Al Jackson style drumming. Why was this band so influential? The reason is here. Great packaging too; Studio 1 style cut outs.
    This record rules!!!

Some of the best musicals from the last century appear on this 4-CD compilation "Musicals:The Gold Collection", featuring many stars of the London Stage with Paul Bateman (conductor), The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, The Philharmonia, The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the world renown Crouch End Festival Chorus ~ sharing the spotlight, blending voice and music within the boundaries of great compositions from sold out musical shows from the past ~ all songs presented on this collection have been performed by a diverse set of artists ~ share the beauty of simplicity that exists in the music of each performance.

Here's just a sampling with "Annie", Annie Get Your Gun", "Anything Goes", "Aspects of Love", "Cabaret", "Carmen Jones", "Carousel", "Cats", "Chess", "Evita", "The Fantastics", "Fiddler on the Roof", "Gigi", "Guys and Dolls", "Jesus Christ Superstar", "Joseph and His Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat", "Kismet", "Kiss Me Kate", "La Cage Aux Folles", "Les Miserables", "A Little Night Music", "Man of La Mancha", "Oklahoma", "Phantom of the Opera", "Porgy & Bess", "Seven Brides For Seven Brothers", "Showboat", "The Sound of Music", "South Pacific", "Starlight Express", "Sunset Boulevard", "Tell Me On Sunday", "There's No Business Like Show Business", "West Side Story" ~ each cue is just the icing on the cake presented in this one of a kind event.

5 out of 5 stars Ella Jenkins is still the best!.......2006-02-26

This is a wonderful CD to use with preschool and early elementary aged children. Music teachers and choir teachers will find these musical activities educational and a lot of fun! These were so much fun for me as a child and they're just as much fun now that I'm a teacher!

5 out of 5 stars Songs that you never forget; movement, rythm and instruments.......1999-11-13

30 years ago I used this in a preschool;you never forget the songs. I'm buying it now for my grandchildren so they can have the same fun, marching around to music and playing their instruments.
