"Wrapped Up In Your Kiss" marks Steve Millard's debut as both a composer and a lyricist. In Quintessence, Millard has found the quintessential group to convey the depth and variety of his compositions. The CD opens with "The Man She Loves," a driving up-tempo bossa nova. Hans Teuber's rich, full-bodied tenor sax, Eugen Bien's crisp piano, and Mark Ivester's clean beat recall the Getz/Gilberto/Jobim collaborations of the early 1960's. The title track, featuring silky vocalist Jennifer Ivester (Mark's wife), is a smoky midnight ballad of sensuous anticipation, highlighted by Teuber's beautiful and haunting tenor solo. "Sand & Sea" brings us back to a lighter bossa nova, à la Jobim's "Wave," featuring Bien (pronounce BEE-EN) on piano, with Douglas Barnett as always providing a solid bass line. On "Things Haven't Been The Same," Jennifer sings a tale of love lost with a 9/8 feel. Barnett's descending bass lines provide a compelling synchronicity. "The Man of My Dreams" is an upbeat big band tune in the spirit of Ellington, performed by the quintet, with Teuber and Bien delivering solid solos and Jennifer singing tongue-in-cheek. The final track, "Breezy Summer Night," has Teuber switching to alto and conveying a couple walking hand-in-hand on a gorgeous quiet summer evening with a hint of wind whispering in the trees. Barnett shows off his melodic chops on this one as well. When recording engineer Rick Fisher (whose list of clients has included The Steve Miller Band and Pearl Jam) was mastering this CD, he said, "This is really nice, but why would anyone in this day and age write Jazz Standards?" Steve Millard answers: "Why not?"

For my money, this disc is worth its weight in gold for the magnificent performances of the songs by Elaine Bonazzi and Frank Glazer. Bonazzi's voice is a rich mezzo and her French is impeccable. Furthermore, she invests the songs with just the right amount of wry sophistication. Her personality really brings these little jewels to life. Frank Glazer is the knowing accompanist. You won't be disappointed!!

5 out of 5 stars A Laughably Cheap Way to Experience Satie.......2003-01-08

If you ever wanted to expose yourself to the music of Erik Satie but were not sure where to start, this is your disc. If you are turned off by all of the Satie albums marketed as "the world's most relaxing music" this is also your disc. If you've always thought of Satie as a hack of meagre talent who hid his lack of ability under a facade of cool surrealistic irony, this is your disc. For just over ten dollars, this disc shows Satie in all of his range, from pop cabaret song composer, to artist of exquisite sensibility. At this price, you should lap this one right up.

Most of these recordings are reissues of earlier Vox material from the 70's. I have most of the originals in either tape or LP form, but cannot review absolutely everything on the CD, due to holes in my collection. But what I do know from this series is terrific. The vocal music covers most of Satie's most important music in this form. Je Te Veux and Tendrement are both cabaret pieces, and as such they are revealing of Satie's melodic gifts, gifts not readily apparent in his other work. Both are luxurious 19th century salon pieces in the best sense of the word, well crafted and graceful for the voice. Some of the later songs, including the brilliantly surreal Luditions are exactly what you would expect Satie to write, quirky and yet with something deeper underneath.

The duo piano music is largely unknown to me, with the exception of the Three Morceaux in the Form of a Pair. This piece is very similar to other Satie solo piano works, charming, and seemingly lightweight, but with some disquieting undertones hidden under a childlike exterior.

However the real reason to get this CD is for the orchestral and dramatic works. Parade is a classic of it's kind, the first ballet about nothing to be produced. Concieved by Cocteau, with set and costume design by Picasso and choreography by Massine (i think)the work was a success du scandale in Paris. Musically, Satie's orchestrations are clever and very well balanced and his music is somewhere between minimally brilliant and banal. The banality is an essential part of the work however, so I don't mean this as a criticism.

Relache may have been Satie's most revolutionary work. It is the antithesis of the omnipresent Gymnopodies. This is almost a harsh work, though not in the sense of harsh dissonance. It is devised around a very limited series of ideas and repeats those ideas in subtly varied ways throughout it's length. As such, the work predates minimalism by about 50 years. Satie was often sited by Cage as a major influence. It's easy to believe that this is the work that was most influential on him.

I do know the other works on this album as well, but the real masterpiece is Satie's Socrate. Socrate reveals a side of Satie that is not usually evident, his serious and very spiritual side. Socrate is a "dramatic" scene for orchestra and voice, setting three sections of the dialogues of Plato. Satie is completely serious in these works, composing a flowing, austere vocal line that sets the Socratic dialogues in relief in all their stark beauty. Rather than manipulate the emotion, Satie aims for an almost antique atmosphere, with subtly moving instrumental lines and modal melodies. The work is less dramatic than hypnotic and as such Socrates' death at the end of the third scene is deeply moving. Until I had heard this work (recommended to me by my composition teacher in college) I had no idea that Satie could be such a powerful composer. Socrate is years ahead of it's time, exerting a powerful influence on Cage (who's Cheap Imitation I is an aleatoric reworking of the material of this piece), Lamonte Young, Glass and latterly Arvo Part. This work alone is worth the price of the CD. Add to that the chance to hear excellent renditions of Relache and Parade and the CD is self-recommending. Anyone interested in the roots of modern music would do well to own this CD.

The reason for the wide discrepancy in reviews for this cd: several distinguished performances, but the sound on most tracks is very primitive. This is due to the digitalization process used: AAD. Nowadays, this almost never occurs; pre-digital recordings are digitally remastered, and designated as ADD. AAD cd's are carelessly transferred, and sound much worse than the original LP-intended records--tubby, ill-balanced, strange overtones, uneven volumes, raw and overblown. This early practice caused many to believe that cd could not reproduce sound comparable to vinyl.

CBS/Sony should be ashamed to present these performances in such poor sound, when a modern remastering could easily have been done. Szell, Walter, Casadesus and others would never have approved such shoddy releases, but they are long gone, and their artistic legacies are here trashed. This disc is a slap in the face to some of the finest performing musicians of the 20th century.

Well, that's what I get for trying to save a few bucks....the original soundtrack to the film Amadeus is three times the price of this CD, so I decided to go with my cheapskate instincts and buy this one, thinking it would be pretty much the same as the soundtrack. Let me prevent you from making the same mistake I did--it isn't! Maybe I just got used to hearing the songs in a certain way from the film, but some of these renditions don't even sound like the same songs. For example, the Symphony # 5 (K. 183) cut is played at a tempo that is so fast, it is tiring to listen to. Some of the songs are done pretty well; the Serenade for Winds (K. 361) is beautiful and moving, the Lacrymosa section from the Requiem is done well, and the Piano Concerto in D Minor retains its haunting mood. If you are looking for a reasonably-priced Mozart CD, this would probably be a good investment for you; but if you are wanting renditions of these beautiful songs as you heard them in the film, then spend the extra bucks and buy the soundtrack.

Terrible. Were these selections recorded on a gramophone, or what? There are a million recordings of each of these pieces that are so much better than the way they're presented here. There's no real sense of musicality at all; each piece sounds about as exciting as staring at the printed music would be. I'd be ashamed to use this CD to indoctrinate my friends to Mozart. If you want Mozart in all his lush greatness, go buy a CD by the ASMF, or the VPO, or reputable orchestras. But for Pete's sake, skip this one at all costs.

Millard plays with sensitivity and has a wonderfully deep, sonorous tone. The orchestra plays with agility and grace; their timing and sense of place in the ensemble are superb.

The repertoire on this recording is not as well known as a lot of bassoon music, but that should be no deterrent. The Wolf-Ferrari especially is a gorgeous piece that you will fall in love with almost immediately. Even if you are not normally a fan of bassoon music, you will love this recording.

Highly recommended to just about anyone.

I have many recordings of bassoon literature in my library. After a few listenings to this disc, I would have to say that it has become one of my favorites. Christopher Millard is a poet and an artist who happens to use the bassoon as his form of expression. He paints with an endless palate of colors, moods, and emotions. His playing is truly a thing of great beauty. The selections are wonderful! The Rota and Wolf-Ferrari are absolutely fantastic works with such beauty and lyricism. The Nussio is like watching fire works on the Fourth of July, constantly exciting and surprising. I had a permanent smile while lstening to this disc. I can't recommend it highly enough. Five stars are not enough.

      These recordings bring back wonderful memories. I remember our library had these recordings of Bach's ORCHESTRAL SUITES 2 and 3, along with SUITES 1 and 4, in a complete LP set. I learned these works listening to that set, and think as highly of them today as I did that summer of 1972 when first intensely interested in Classical music. Pablo Casals has the right feel for Bach's Orchestral Suites on modern instruments. Casals' tempos are never too fast, yet the allegro passages sizzle; he doesn't overdo repeats where they aren't needed. I find his Bach refreshing, relaxing, and a real antidote to our fast paced, cold, technologically advanced, materialism-gone-mad world.

      Some readers will not agree with me and prefer period instruments (Hogwood and Pinnock are two examples), or more recent recordings of Marriner, Rilling, Leppard, Max Pommer (Capriccio) with modern instruments. These recordings are all respectable; Marriner(London) and Leppard (Philips - hard to find recently) are very fine, but Casals has something special which makes me really fond of his recordings. Everything is MUSICAL, and Casals isn't worried about "how would Bach have heard this?" Performance practices for Baroque music have changed alot since 1966 - nearly 40 years ago - when these recordings were made, but Casals is still my preference.

      Sony has released Casals/Marlboro Festival Bach SUITES 1 and 4 on 2 different CDs, coupled with the BRANDENBURG CONCERTOS by the same forces. My advice is to get all 3 discs (this one included) for Casals' special way with Bach.

      J. Sebastian Bach was a very virile, full-blooded man who worked all his life, had two wives, and sired about 20 children. Casals' realizations of Bach's music illustrate Bach's virility and vivacity. Casals conducts the Bach Concerti & Suites as he [Casals] plays the Bach Sonatas: with vim, vigor, and vitality; with rhythm, color, and accent; with dash, esprit, and intellect. In short, these are the very best realizations of the Orchestral Suites available--or will ever again be available.

      By the way, in these sessions and at rehearsals, Casals conducted sitting down with his cello on which he illustrated the tempi, accents and inflections he wanted for the orchestra, and used his cello bow as a baton. This is as real as it gets!

      The soloists are wonderful. The recorded sound is bright and clear. The price is incredibly cheap. What are you waiting for?

      A very inspirational and spiritually soothing CD. I personally rank it as one of the best works by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. This is the 5th copy which I will be purchasing. I was forced to give away the others to friends who heard me playing it, and were so blown away by its magnificence that they offered to buy it from me. I ended up giving them away because I don't believe the spiritual upliftment this CD delivers can be quantified in dollars.
