About the Artist
Not much is known about the unholy four who call themselves "Ghoul" other than the small amount of information gleaned from the mysterious old man that runs the curio shop in the alley behind the cemetery. He claims to own strange recordings on wax cylinder of horrible noises seeping out of the earth under the rows and rows of tombs, and has been heard to describe the inner sanctum of these bizarre and ghastly creatures in shocking detail. Locals have spotted them in the night, stalking through the graveyard, shovels and pickaxes in tow, ever searching for the horrible dead things that it's rumored they feed upon. Their hideously deformed faces obscured by ragged sacks with makeshift eyeholes, they shamble from grave to grave, gibbering incoherently in the eerie mist that forever enshrouds the time worn catafalques of Monture Noire cemetery. Discovered by Chilly Billy Grossera and Jill "the thrill" Goreardi while on a vacation to the obscure hamlet of Creepsylvania in an undisclosed Eastern European country, Ghoul consists of Digestor (guitars and vocals), Fermentor (drums and vocals), and Cremator (bass and vocals). According to Chilly Billy, Ghoul were "hiding behind a mausoleum in the shadows when Jill and I glimpsed theirspectral shapes looming in the darkness. They fled, in a loping, jerky sort of way, and we pursued them into an open crypt. The apparently shallow grave actually opened up into a series of subterranean tunnels, each lit by a row of candles mounted on wax covered skulls. Room upon room opened up to us, each more horrible than the last. Furniture made of bones; a distillery for rotting body fluids; a kitchen containing shapeless terrors which I don't dare describe; it was a den of disgust and filth of the most foul sort. When we finally caught up with the three weird figures they were in a room full of instruments that were pieced together from the bones and skins of festering carcasses. Strange music was crashing through a jerry rigged speaker and Jill and I knew we had found something special." After Ghoul had been tricked into signing a contract with Razorback Records, they were unmercifully prodded by the infamous record peddling duo into writing material for a full length album, which was released in early 2002 under the title "We Came For The Dead". After several media personalities reviewed the album, three questions have been raised: "who are these creeps?", "where did they come from?", and "what the hell is a catafalque?". "We Came for the Dead" released last year saw the birth of "Ghoul" on Razorback Records, by far one of my favourite trash bands, combining a heavy dose of humour with horrific riffing, fast blast drumming and succulent screaming to create a high quality album that never failed to impress and entertain. Now they are back with their second offering "Maniaxe", once again bringing to the ring a healthy sense of metal humour, the same furious style of song writing and their high quality sound.
The album works much like a story, especially the lyrics give you a feeling that you're reading and hearing the adventures of four maniacs on their hunt to scare the living daylights out of unsuspecting bystanders and their bloody battles with the so-called "Ghoul Hunter", the song baring that name also being the absolute highlight of the album. The sound is much like their debut, but more clean, every instrument is equally heard in the final mix and create a tight monster of a sound that easily beats many of the greater trash bands out there today. The songwriting is excellent, featuring enough solo's and funky drumbeats to make every song stand out and the vocals have just enough variation to stay interesting throughout the album. All in all this is certainly an album that should be in your collection, because it's a high quality trashing speed fest, but most of all, it's incredibly entertaining..
