Customer Reviews:
1 song worth the price of the whole album.......2007-05-04
If you listen to nothing else on this album but Aqua Marine, it has paid for itself. Aqua Marine is one of the best instrumentals, in and outside of the Santana collection. Other songs on the album are typical of the era for many artist; "Where do i go now, Jazz, Rock-n-roll.....?". I have this on vinyl and now it's time to get it on CD.
STILL ROCKS.......2007-04-27
I purchased this on vinyl when it came out and I still like this album. Carlos still had the fire in his belly. What he's doing nowadays is OK but I can't get too worked up about it. He has softened up his sound and records sales go up, wow, not THERE'S A shocker!!
Even though I am not too excited by what he's doing these days Carlos will always have a place in my heart. Although he's got some good stuff out there his first 3 CDs are still classics to me. Listen to the track TOUSSAINT L'OVERTURE from his 3rd album, for me THAT was the classic Santana sound and nobody did THAT better!! Nobody!!
[..]
Show me the way.........2007-01-03
This album ranks least among many good releases for this great artist, and was the first Santana album to drop below the 500,000 sales mark necessary for gold record certification.
The music on this CD falls, some in the Pop Rock genre and some in the Latin Rock, yet it is difficult to give it a perfect identity or description. Santana seems lost between his love for the Rock Jazz Fusion music, his worries about sales and his commercial rank among the big Rock artists.
Bottom line "Marathon" is for the hardcore Santana fans only.
Other great Santana releases:
1. Santana
2. Abraxas
3. Santana III
4. Love, Devotion and Surrender. (Jazz-Rock-Fusion)
5. Caravanserai (Jazz-Rock)
6. Carlos Santana and Buddy Miles.
Probably Santana's worst.......2006-11-04
This album was released in 1979. It is 44 minutes long and there are no liner notes. It was Santana's worst selling album of all time (it did worse than Santana's forays into jazz).
There are only 2 tracks on this CD that are any good, and they are both instrumentals. Aqua Marine may be the prettiest composition that Santana has ever done. Runnin' is a short, driving instrumental tacked on to Stand Up.
The rest of the CD is soul/pop. I like pop. I like soul. I like Santana playing pop and soul. This CD is just bad pop/soul.
Part of the problem is the new lead singer, Alex Ligertwood, who sings all the vocals. He has a bad, in your face, over the top style. He will be a bane for Santana for years to come.
After 3 smash Latin-rock albums, Santana migrated to jazz fusion. In the later seventies, he started moving back to his Latin-rock roots. But then he overshot and started doing pop with a Latin tinge. And tried moving into soul. From the late seventies and all through the eighties, Santana had a stripped down pop sound. He started getting it back together in the nineties. However, no matter what he was into, Santana always put on a great concert.
Hurrah to the iPod.......2006-01-13
As my title suggests I have 'ripped' this CD--as well as several thousand--of my eight thousand CD collection onto my iPod and have revisited many of the older albums that I had put into storage cases. I have always thought this CD was a fantastic one and listening to it via the iPod has affirmed it. With the title track warning one and all that the rest of the album is going to be a long running sprint. The music is fine. This is latin rock--or rock at its finest form; lyrical and driving and melodic.

Customer Reviews:
Amazing!!.......2007-02-23
Great music performed by one of the best orchestras in the world. What more can you ask for?Ron Goodwin is a genius. The music that he wrote is incredible. His best pieces are featured here on this cd. From the great marches like " Force ten from Navarone" to great romantic sounding pieces like "Deadly Stranger" and the love theme from 633 Sqadron. I also really like the selections from "Monte Carlo or Bust"(almost seven minutes long) and the selections from "Those magnificent men in Their flying machines" (six minutes long). Rumon Gamba and the BBC Philharmonic do a great job performing all the pieces, and add another great cd to the Chandos movie series. This is a must have for fans of Ron Goddwin or great film music in general. It well deserves the 5 stars and maybe even more.
Enjoyable!.......2007-01-10
Ron Goodwin is a fine composer. I particularly enjoyed listening to the music from the early 1960's Miss Marple films, starring Margaret Rutherford. But, to let one know; the Marple music is different from most of the Goodwin scores on this CD. His music is mostly of the rousing march or military variety.
None Better.......2006-10-31
Goodwin's music is outstanding. His World War II scores are outstanding. They have drive and purpose. They sound good too.
those magnificent men in their flying machines.......2005-08-05
This CD provides a range of music mainly from films and concerned with epic war dramas all from the pen of the well known Ron Goodwin. Films such as 633squadron, submarine - X, operation strongbow, force ten from navarone, where eagles dare are just some which are represented. I was particularly looking for the title'Those magnificant men in their flying machines' to add to a slide show of vintage planes in flight and on exhibition. This fitted the bill just fine.

Customer Reviews:
Identify Your Purpose.......2007-02-19
It is expedient to identify one's purpose(s) when making a purchase. If the purpose is to ridicule, that person is a fool, not an example of a taken for granted freedom. Having said that, Abraham Laboriel completes this recording. I am a mild fan of Santana and have enjoyed his music for many years, as I said, mildly. I am a fan of good musicians and Abraham Laboriel is one such. A special, "Thank you!" must go to Dave Weckl as well as to all the other musicians making this recording excellent. The guitarists do justice, for the most part. Thank you to all for an excellent recording.
Electric Guitar Heaven.......2007-01-12
I guess the real question to ask is whether or not we need to hear Carlos Santana's classic material reinterpreted by other guitarists. If your answer is yes, this CD is heaven-sent. Ten giants of jazz, rock and blues guitar--including Pat Martino, Eric Gale, Mike Stern, Frank Gambale and Robben Ford--pay tribute to the superstar six-string slinger by putting their own distinctive individual stamps on "Jingo," "Oye Como Va," "Blues for Salvador" and more. Martino is the most subtle, planting a gorgeous "Flor D'Luna (Moonflower)" in the midst of a garden of mostly blazing hot licks, but Albert Lee throws a countryish Telecaster tone onto "Samba Pa Ti" that works very nicely. --Jim Newsom

Customer Reviews:
A good effort but not the best.......2006-06-03
This album is not the best from the new batch of Saga (Full Circle, Network, House of Cards). It is a must buy for hardcore fans, for new listeners who want to hear the newer albums of Saga go for 'Network' .
much better than I expected !.......2004-07-10
I'm not quite sure why others have given this CD such bad reviews: this SAGA album is almost as good as "House of Cards", and is way better than "Full Circle" (which I find completely unlistenable). All but one or two tracks on this one are very good, I've found myself listening to it over and over in the car.
Not a waste-- if you're a Saga fan.......2003-05-24
Often ignored by critics and record stores alike, Saga is a greatly underated band who deserves more credit and is certainly worth the time searching for. However, that being said, this latest release is not one of their finest. After the release of two of their best ever (Full Circle, and House of Cards) it seems the Canadian rockers slipped into a creative slump and re-hashed previous material. It's good, but not what we've come to expect. And what a dissapointing conclusion to the years-spanning Chapters rock-opera. Very anti-climactic! Still, if your a fan, it's not terrible and worthy of inclusion in your collection. If you're just getting acquainted, however, may I suggest Defining Moments, Vol 1 or the previous mentioned albums as a good intro.
Heads or Tails? Tails this time...........2003-04-17
Saga has been, since 1980 or so, one of my favorite bands. They still are. But "Marathon" won't be one of the CDs that makes it into regular rotation on my jukebox. There are a couple promising songs here - the title track among them - and even a little acoustic guitar that adds a texture not seen often in Saga recordings. But between the overly simplistic lyrics and the very flat production characteristics of this disc, this is not one of the group's best efforts. This project was, according to the liner notes, done entirely by the band - engineering, mixing, etc. - and the lack of an outside influence is apparent. Michael Sadler's voice seems far too "covered up" by unneeded backing vocals, the keyboard work is not up to the standard of even recent recordings such as "Full Circle," and Ian's guitar work is less than what we've come to expect. Points are to be given for the CD artwork, however, and for the band still doing what they love to do after 27 years or so. The collective body of work is exemplary, and a song or two from this one make it into the "listen to it" pile. All that said, here's hoping Saga makes a North American appearance or two now that the European tour has ended....
A little of something for every Saga fan.......2003-03-11
This cd starts off with a solid track Marathon. The next really good song is breathing lessons( sort of a ballad). The first great track is Streets of Gold which is very much in the vein of the other chapter song( musiccally a really excellent song). The Blind side of my heart is another excellent ballad type song. You know I know is another chapter song which is excellent. Rise and Shine is the single and a good song a little different for a Saga song. Overall this cd is pretty heavy somewhat like full circle but different. The cd isn't perfect sometimes it get bogged down with lil friend sam voices like at the start of too deep(which gets better the farther you get into the song). It has some really good material on it, but also takes few listens to get used to the cd. It's heavier than other cd's but also has some softer material on it.

The marathon.......2003-10-01
This is one of the best of the Elvis "fan club" releases. It features alternate takes of songs recorded in June, 1970. This session has come to be known as the "Nashville Marathon" because Elvis recorded over 30 songs at the session. Elvis recorded a very diverse range of material at these sessions, most of which is quite good. Elvis is in great spirits and great voice and seems to be having a lot of fun. Highly recommended for fans of the King.
a great album !.......2003-01-19
If you like alternative takes, this is the one that has a good sound quallity and great performances, with an Evis singing strongly as ever.

O'Reilly and Athony rock again.......2005-11-25
As an "Englishman in New York" I'm constantly amazed how bands like Tammany Hall NYC don't get more coverage in the US, and ultimately "discovered".
On marathon, O'Reilly and Anthony have put together another fine set, mixing a slightly harder edged electric sound with their now classic, accoustic guitars. If you are a NY City resident you'll recognise O'Reillys lyrics, they are either places you've been, things you've done, or thoughts you've had. From "be safe" to the title track, "marathon" these are the thoughts of New York, the soundtrack of the sidewalk!
This cd is what their limited release cd "Shiner" should have been, the story of a city. The new tracks "beyond an ocean", "nightmare on the make", "holdin out", "coffee and cake" and "celings in the sky, finish what they started and hang together better in both style and sound.
Of the new tracks "beyond an ocean" gives O'Reillys vocals a good run, and is symphonic with the lead guitar. A Police riff'd "nightmare on the make" brings a sax into the mix and is a real toe tapper. "coffee and cake" does it for me, it harks back to their earlier accoustic successes that many will have heard from HBO, but few would know were from Tammany Hall NYC.
For the life of me I can't work out who or what "celings in the sky" reminds me of? However, I've been there. Melancholic, rhythmic, and euphoric, I can imagine walking over the Brooklyn Bridge as the sun comes up, another great day. The cd closes with "goodnight song" - a long time favorite, another accoustic track laced with just enough electric support. O'Reilly closes the lyrics with "In a night I'll know where my heart lies, and I'll realize what matters most in my mind".
Hey O'Reilly, we should all have your talent!
Their album so far!.......2005-07-06
If you have heard Getawaylands, Back in a Bottle, or Buddy before and enjoyed it then you need this CD! If you have not then you are missing out!
The best way I can describe Tammany Hall NYC's sound is how they describe it themselves on Myspace.com 'The Who without the deafness. Matchbox 20 without the cross over-cheddar. Counting Crows without the Bar band factor. Wilco with hope. Radiohead without the computerized sorrow and bleeps and bloops. The Police without the 80s. Maroon 5 without Stevie Wonder'.
Marathon is a roller coaster ride of emotion, detailing the highs and lows of every day life, from the first to last track you are griped by heartfelt lyrics, vocals, and guitar playing. Although every track is good, the ones that stand out for me are Marathon, beyond an ocean, better homes and walmer days, and ceilings in the sky. But I feel that the individuals mood when listening may shape which songs stand out during listening!
Enjoy!
