5 out of 5 stars classic music CD.......2007-06-27

The CD was well represented by the clips on the Amazon website and came in time for our event. We did have a problem with the charge but that was taken care of promptly. Great service.

4 out of 5 stars Good for beginners.......2007-02-15

It is an excellent collection of classical music. I would recommend this CD if you have a friend who don't like classical music, since it has the most beautiful overtures and portions of famous artists. If you are a Classic Music Savvy you probably will not be impressed by it, unless you want to play the CD as background music in a friends gathering.

4 out of 5 stars Great mix.......2007-02-14

All the best composers! Over an hour of music. A samble of the greatest pieces.

5 out of 5 stars masters of classical music.......2007-03-26

A nice collection for the classical listener. Great variety of composers and the music quality of the cds are very good.

5 out of 5 stars A good basic collection.......2006-11-10

With selections from numerous composers, it is an easy way to familiarize oneself with some of the most popular classical works and excerpts. A pleasant listen for the initiated too.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction to classical music.......2006-10-18

This is an excellent introduction to classical music. Well performed and presented.

5 out of 5 stars Very Beautiful!!!!!1.......2006-10-05

If you are a fan of classical music then you better get this set. Not only is it very cheap, 10 Discs for about 2$ per disk. Now where are you gonna find a deal like this. I actually found mine chaper, $20.00 even and the music is outstanding. If you had a very bad day and very stressed out, just put in one of these cds, lay down, dim down the lights and just relax. It really helped me out.

5 out of 5 stars Still Stuck on Beethoven.......2006-08-22

I just recently started listening to classical music so I'm certainly not one to compare or critique the quality of this set. However, I do have a few comments...

My interest started in this genre of music because I'm researching my ancestry in Prussia and this is the music of those times. Never mind my ancestors were poor peasants who probably never got the chance to hear such wonderful music... when listening to these CDs, I'm taken back in time... to a royal court in Europe... to another place in time. The music is inspiring, relaxing, invigorating.

I have yet to listen to all the CD's in the set. I'm stuck on Beethoven! Wasn't he AWESOME!?!

I think this set is a wonderful introduction to classical music!!!!!

The Tunisian oud master Anouar Brahem has chosen to work in a trio setting this time out, accompanied by Francois Couturier on piano and Jean-Louis Matinier on accordion. Brahem states in the liner notes that these pieces were actually composed on the piano, emerging while he was taking a much-needed short break from his primary instrument. While Pas de Chat Noir ("The Black Cat's Footsteps") is a change of pace, it is a not a terribly remote detour. Brahem is still in his favorite space, exploring the power of implication, and the other players are in synch with his vision. All three participants sound muted, relating to one another in parallels rather than in a heated dialogue. The result is a spacious, romantic pastiche of Farid El-Atrache, Astor Piazzolla, Keith Jarrett, 19th- and 20th-century French impressionists (especially Eric Satie), plus shades of every strung-out, enervated, after-hours nightclub jam that ever was. --Christina Roden

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Lovely.......2007-05-20

This is a beautiful CD, filled with a musical style which defies categorization. Evocative of Eric Satie's work for the piano, this album is a hypnotic mix of Middle Eastern and Western sounds - part jazz, part classical. This is one of those purchases which I am glad I went the extra mile to find.

5 out of 5 stars truly unique.......2007-05-19

It is hard to describe this unusual CD. Hauntingly peaceful are two words that come to mind.Relaxing and calming are two more. Simply beautiful also.

5 out of 5 stars absolutely essential (FJB/O!-music 2006).......2006-11-26

Anouar Brahem is an artist of incredible vision and talent. This recording, is one of his best.

In the notes to the CD, Brahem is quotes as saying that after recording his THIMAR album, the resulting physical and artistic exhaustion caused him to set aside his oud for a while - something he said he had never before done. Turning his musical ideas and expression to his piano, Brahem created the pieces recorded here. When he took these ideas into the studio (and taking his oud along with him), along with colleagues François Coutourier (piano) and Jean-Louis Matinier (accordion), his ideas were brought beautifully to fruition. The result is one of the most beautiful recordings I have ever heard.

The pieces having been written on the piano, that instrument takes the lead - but the oud and the accordion have a lot to say as well, and their voices blend effortlessly with that of the keyboard. Brahem is a master not only at composition and performing, but, in his arrangements, and in the very choosing of his accompanying musicians, shows a brilliance that is breathtaking. Through the various groupings that he has assembled on his recordings, he endows his music with a strength and scope that is stunning - it takes on a life of its own, and grows far beyond whatever boundaries smaller minds might employ to contain it by definition.

This is 'world music' in the deepest, spiritual sense of the phrase - political frontiers are vanquished and erased, while cultures are honored, respected and mingled.

Brahem's last album, ASTRAKAN CAFÉ, alluded to this meeting and convergence of styles - with each successive release, Brahem furthers his cause (and that of the open-minded, eager-to-explore listener). Each and every track included here is an absolute gem. Approach this album with an open mind and ear, and marvel at the journey on which you are to be led.

This is an absolutely essential recording.

5 out of 5 stars Mediterranean Music.......2006-11-03

One of the best CDs I have ever bought. Many asked who was playing when I played it. I purchased 4 more for friends. Soothing and rich. if you like Arabic music infused with French touch of accordion.

5 out of 5 stars excellent music.......2006-03-23

The music on this CD has a beautifully interweaving combination of instuments. The lovely melodies are simple and complex at the same time, and evoke pleasant reverie. Everyone we have played it for enjoyed it very much.

5 out of 5 stars Ballet .......2007-07-01

I was away for a long time. I feel very better now. I love this music and I am grateful to it.

5 out of 5 stars Masterful recording of masterful compositions.......2007-01-19

This recording has become rare to find (in Europe), which surprises me, for I find both the compositions and the performance excellent. Especially the Sylphides, which are orchestral arrangements of some of Chopin's finest piano pieces - are heavenly. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Ballet bon bons German style.......2004-06-26

Herbert von Karajan was the most recorded conductor in history. For that reason, he made a lot of records (that turned into CDs) like this one -- collections of well-known music that the public wants to hear over and over again. This group of ballet music is good, done in Karajan's typical highly chiseled style with a minimum of sentimentality. I once read a critic who called the style Karajan and Szell popularized the "school of industrial perfection", meaning every note in its place every time. That's true here, too. My favorite among these bon bons is the Tchaikovsky music from "Sleeping Beauty". Karajan is still hailed today for his later stereo version of the final Tchaikovsky troika of symphonies. Many critics put him up there with the best Tchaikovksy recordings ever. You can tell why critics were so persuaded by listening to his bleeding chuncks from "Sleeping Beauty". Not only does it contain the essential Berlin Philharmonic perfection and polish, it goes a little further than everything else on this set in terms of emotional attachment. The first two sections of the music, "Introduction. La Fee da Lilas" and "Adagio. Pas d'action" pack an enormous wallop. The final section is monumentally done by Karajan and the Berliners, surging forward in waves of sound and emotion until the listener is swept away during the crescendo in almost unconscious grandeur. I urge you to listen to this magnificent music-making and try not to develop goose flesh at the peak. This connection between perfection, music and emotion is what set Karajan apart from every other conductor in the 20th Century, and the reason he is as vivid and a larger than life figure today, 15 years after his death.

5 out of 5 stars First-Rate Ballet Music.......2003-11-14

This collection of "Famous Ballet Music" from DG's mid-priced "2CD" series is truly first-rate. A lot of the credit for that goes to the man in charge of this set, Herbert von Karajan. The great conductor leads the Berlin Philharmonic through glowing highlights and suites from Offenbach's "Gaite Parisienne," Gounod's "Faust," Tchaikovsky's "Sleeping Beauty" and Delibes' "Coppelia," and the complete Chopin's "Les Sylphides" and "Dance of the Hours" from Ponchielli's "La Gioconda." Of course, the pieces featured here are the types of orchestral nuggets that someone like Karajan and the Berliners could eat for breakfast while reading the paper. But Karajan really prided himself in being one of the stereo-age's best Tchaikovsky conductors, and he made several recordings of each of the three ballet suites in addition to his many Symphonic Cycles. Also, his early 1960s accounts of the Chopin and Delibes in particular (the remainder of the works were recorded in the early 1970s), are as good, if not better, than any performance I have heard. In all, this is a collection that will appeal to the casual fan and serious collector alike.

    5 out of 5 stars Celestial Harmonies.......2005-07-14

Thanks to Rock archivist, Glenn A Baker, for re-mastering ,'Le Chat Bleau'. Having owned it originally on vinyl, and through my roving days, on cassette, it was a thrill to rediscover it on the Raven label. de Ville's mind-set is essentially the evanscent soul of the greatest,'Drifter's' hits. That is, the boy/girl thing, the hermetically sealed priviledged conjunction about whose axis, the rest of the world can go rotate. Willy seems heroically immune to the intervening decades when these sounds and sentiments were momentous. Thus, 'Le Chat Bleau' was a glorious anachronism when it appeared, causing Capitol U.S, to baulk about its release. Unlike say,a 'Drifter's Greatest Hits', this Cd is conceived as thematically linked, with balanced tempos, and crafted to perfection. de Ville is in great voice and his pen just dripping with the inevitable, suggestive couplets.'This Must Be Tonight', justifiably turns up on most compilations. 'Bad Boy' and the cajun spiced,'Mazurka', the celestial harmony of,'Heaven Stood Still', exemplify his range. The Doc Pomus collaborations are exhilerating.'The World Outside,'You Just Keep Me Holding On', and'Just To Walk That Little Girl Home', are as classic as anything he conceved for Ben e King. Having applauded the in tact original, I think Baker's gone for overkill with the bonus versions of 7 of the tracks.de Ville's handling of,'Save The Last Dance For Me' is an honorable and devotional tribute to his sources. However, the live stuff does nothing but reveal how brilliant the chemistry was in that Paris studio. It was, as he mused, his,'Starry Night'.

5 out of 5 stars An unheralded classic.......2005-05-25

A dear friend gave me a cassette version of Le Chat Bleu the year it was released. I wore it out. The U.S. vinyl version criminally omitted at least one song (Mazurka). In the mid-80s I found the original, complete vinyl version at a shop in France. I played it only once, for a re-taping.

Thank god for this CD re-issue. And thank god Willie is still creating and performing...albeit mostly in Europe, where he got a small bit of the appreciation he deserves.

Now this sounds horribly corny, but I have a list of three songs to be played at my wake, should someone decide to carry on that way when I check out. "Heaven Stood Still" was the first on that list. That song and LeChat Bleu are, indeed, a "celestial rhapsody."

5 out of 5 stars The best album by one of the great American rock bands.......2004-11-19

This album--oh, man. This is neither the time nor the place to discuss the tragedies of American music, but it truly is a tragedy that the majority of boys and girls have never heard "Heaven Stood Still." It's regal in its beauty--think "She's Leaving Home," or "Caroline, No." This song is gorgeous in the way the Venus de Milo is gorgeous--immediately, lastingly, nakedly.
"Turn You Every Way But Loose," on the other hand, is a rock song, and one of the best Mink Deville ever did. It's constructed like a single, with a strong bass line, a seductive vocal line, and a great hook.
This album is a collection of great songs. They're songs about love, and they're sincere, passionate, and lovely. That's what rock and roll ought to be.

5 out of 5 stars Still the best Album by the one and only Willy DeVille.......2004-11-06

Simply one of the greatest singers and songwriters of the last 30 years. Just in case you've only recently discovered Willy deVille - this is the absolute classic. "Heaven Stood Still" gotta be the mother of all ballads, and "Just to walk that little Girl home" comes a close second. The uptempo opener "This must be the night" features classic and hard to top Louis Cortellezzi sax solos. Grandiose and intimate, emotional and raw, Willy sings his heart out on every track with an intensity that is simply unmatched. One of the greatest CDs ever recorded.

5 out of 5 stars Still holds up after all these years.......2004-10-21

An absolute classic. Combines doo-wop, soul, rock, latin, into one wonderful mix. His voice, for those who have not heard him, is truly unique. Some of the songs will make you think of street-corner harmony groups, while others take on the punk spirit of the times. However, no matter what you've read, this is absolutely not "punk" or "new wave." It is music solidly grounded in the r&b and rock&roll of the late 1950's and early 1960's, without sounding dated or derivative. One of the rare early 1980's records which has aged extremely well.

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars Very Impressive..........2006-10-10

this review concerns the piano concerto recordings. Pletnev and Fedoseyev and the Philharmonia play like a house on fire, and Pletnev delivers a refreshingly classical interpretation of the music..appropriate for music by a composer who loved Mozart.

Pletnev delivers a big performance that is, at the same time, utterly transparent at all times. No matter how treacherously difficult the music gets, he never comes close to losing his sange froide. But the performance is never cold. Pletnev and Fedoseyev capture Tchaikovsky's mercurial quality as well as anyone and better than most.

Most of all though, it just sounds as if Pletnev and Fedoseyev thought long and carefully about these performances..they understand this music from the inside out and nothing escapes them. Phrasing, in particular, has classical clarity and awareness that VERY few musicians every manage to find in these concertos. At the same time, this is deeply thrilling playing, especially in the outer movements. There is always a wonderful sense of occasion, and kudos to the Philharmonia, playing on the edge of their seats without ever breaking a sweat.

Additional kudos to the recording engineers, for making an ideal recording in every respect: ambience, inner-detail, attacks, dynamic range, overall perspective, solo perspective, are all simply perfect.

I have to confess to a soft-spot for Tchaikovsky's second concerto, which is, to me, a significantly better concerto than the first, although the first is much better-known...and Pletnev just plays the be-jeebers out of it, especially in the last movement, music and playing that would move a stone. You'll be on the edge of your seat yourself.

In short, this recording was when it was made, and still is, at the very top of Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto recordings.

      4 out of 5 stars A pleasant overall experience.......2006-08-06

Mikhail Pletnev is best known as a pianist, and then for founding the Russian National orchestra and being its first conductor. Some of his recordings as a conductor (such has his symphonic cycle of Tchaikovsky, which I have never heard, by the way) have been reviewed as poor, but these are certainly not poor. Granted, Pletnev only conducts two and plays in the rest.

That said, they are, in general, wonderful recordings. The playing in each of them is excellent, and the conducting in the Pathetique, despite Pletnev's reputation for being a better pianist that conductor, is very good. The symphony is excellent, worth the price of the set alone, and is reminiscent at times of the Mravinsky/Leningrad recording that has become something of a legend. In fact, I daresay this is better than the Mravinsky. He gets the tempi about right in it, as well, taking a bit faster tempo than I'm used to in the third movement, which I find I actually prefer. That is not as true for the Serbo-Russian March, which seems a bit fast to me. It's a fine recording, to be sure, and at times the tempo is actually very appropriate, and the playing more than makes up for the times when it isn't.

To be honest, many of the piano works I have little experience with, except the first concerto. However, I can say that the playing in the piano concertos is excellent, and Fedoseyev seems to have less of a problem with tempi than Pletnev. I have become quite a fan of Pletnev's version of the first concerto, and the second, while just as well recorded, I find to be less engaging. It is nonetheless a striking work and deserves a place in anyone's collection, and this is a good start. The Seasons (or 'musical pancakes', as Tchaikovsky put it), I find, are good pieces to listen to when I need some quiet music that doesn't distract me. The playing in them is nearly flawless, and they are pretty good pieces, given that each was written in one sitting ('quick to prepare and serve', Tchaikovsky said). Actually, nearly all of Tchaikovsky's piano music is like this. He wrote them for the money only, and considered them to be amateurish and unremarkable (though he cared little for the 1812 Overture and Fifth Symphony, as well, so don't take that to mean they are bad pieces). As such, they are considered to be nonessential, extraneous pieces. They are good to have in your collection, however, and given the quality of the other pieces, even if you're unimpressed with them, it is well worth the price. Finally, there is the arrangement of the Sleeping beauty. I can say little about the arrangement itself, not being all that familiar with the ballet and how it originally sounded, but I will say what I've said for the rest. It's played nicely. That pretty much sums up the set as a whole. I'm sure there are better, but the Pathetique justifies the price alone.

5 out of 5 stars Karajan as Arthur Fiedler, only much, much better.......2007-02-16

Karajan was the main conductor of the Philharmonia during the 1950s, and as such he was expected by EMI to turn out light classics as well as Beethoven and Brahms. Fortunately, he undertook the chore as cheerfully as Leonard Bernstein, another master of pops music. It's like asking Wolfgang Puck to make cotton candy, but no one will complain at the delectable results.

I've owned all these performances in their budget releases on EMI and other spin-off lines, but here they're refurbished in very good sound. Some items, such as Chabrier's Espana, are in really sparkling sonics, not all that usual from EMI, and in every piece the orchestra plays with real panache--no slumming here. The selections come from all over Europe, and for every bit of fluff like von Suppe's Light Cavalry Over. (does anyone play this cartoon favorite anymore?) there's a masterpiece like the Roman Carnival Over. (which Karajan never recorded again--he wasn't much for Berlioz). As for the works he did re-record, these early Philharmonia versions are arguably the freshest. A must-listen for Karajan's fans and lovers of light classics both.

5 out of 5 stars Karajan can smile!.......2005-11-05

This CD includes some musical lollipops, which still love by all people. There are very famous and short orchestral works, as well as they are using today as an encore, showpiece of orchestras.

This recording of Karajan is the lastest with Philharmonia Orchestra. As you know, this London-based orchestra, which founded by Walter Legge, is still a succesful orchestra, today. And Karajan, conducted them at 1950s', when he is at middle ages, about 40s'. And then he conducted his Berlin Philharmoniker from 1960's.

These pieces are lovely played and recorded. Even so, these performances reveal that, Karajan can smile! Including Chabrier's flamboyant "Espana", J. Strauss' "Radetzky March". There is another beautiful piece that Karajan's favourite: Weinberger - Polka form "Svanda the Bagpiper". This is a colourful music. The CD has a romantic track too: Leoncavallo and his tragic Intermezzo of "Pagliacci". CD finishes with Borodin's famous and virtuosic Polovtsian Dances of Prince Igor.

This CD has an interesting photo: Karajan at the cockpit of a US plane! He was interested about pilot, too.

Highly recommended for any music lovers.
