I am a huge fan of Jerry Goldsmith. They did a great job preserving his vision. I can listen to this collection for hours. Great music!

5 out of 5 stars Elmer Bernstein Film Music Collection.......2006-11-03

This is compilation of hit film music from one of the greatest composers in motion pictures. What is surprising though is the music not included like the Ghost And The Darkness, the 13th Warrior, Rudy and others. To be sure, 4 discs are not enough for a composure of this stature. THe recording, however, is an "engineering masterpiece" which makes the music even more enjoyable than when you first heard it at the movies. When are we ging to get the music that was omittd from this compilaton?

4 out of 5 stars Overall a strong Goldsmith sampler.......2006-04-11

Okay, this is a CD review, so the focus is on music, but I've got to say this first: this has got to be a contender for the ugliest cover art ever. I mean, come on...instead of a tribute to the composer, the cover looks like someone spilled a glass of merlot over a NASA photo.

Fortunately, even an ugly cover will not ruin good music. And the good news is that I'd say about 75 percent of the music is good....and on a 4 cd set, that's a lot. Like other Silva compilations, the strength of this compilation is the variety. There are selections from the big releases (Star Trek, Omen, Rambo), but there is also a healthy dose of tracks from the smaller releases(Under Fire, Lionheart, The Swarm).

Two examples come to mind. Capricorn One and The Great Train Robbery are two movies that are not exactly household names today, but are dominated by two of Goldmith's finest main themes. The City of Prague Philharmonic come through with terrific renditions. And there are plenty of other strong performances...a few being concert versions conducted by Goldsmith himself. Suprisingly, "The Wind and the Lion" works, which is no small accomplishment given the ferentic original performance of "Raisuli Attacks".

It's not a complete success. A few of the performances fall flat, particularly some of the more inventive scores. Total Recall is just bad, mangling the performance with poor percussion and synthesizer choices to boot. Also a letdown is the Klingon Attack from the first Star Trek movie. The Prague Philhamonic attempt doesn't sound bad--it's just that once you've heard the original soundtrack's "blaster beam" with enough bass to rattle your teeth...well let's just say Silva's version is a little tinny in comparison.

But I shouldn't dwell on the negative. Overall, this is a strong sampler of Goldsmith's variety. There are plenty of quality performances here, and despite a few omissions (noticeably Planet of the Apes)this is a very good release from Silva.

4 out of 5 stars Jerry Goldsmith - 40 years of pleasure.......2006-02-22

It was wonderful to hear Mr. Goldsmith's music that went all the way back to The Man from UNCLE, The Waltons, Dr Kildare, etc. And then to hear his music up to the present. The man was a genius!

4 out of 5 stars Almost the perfect compilation.......2005-12-31

Age has its value.... This sweeping collection of compositions brings back so many great memories. This collection shows how significant Goldsmith was for both the movie screen and the small screen. With such a grand collection, every reader can be assured that at least one movie or TV program they like or remember had Goldsmith's contribution. It was an amazing life and the collection well worth having.

However, as sweepig as it is, there are a few holes in the selection. "First Contact", one of the sweetest and richest compositions from the Star Trek is absent. "The Ghost and the Darkness" is missing and the "Medicine Man" music should include the theme song. By dwelling on several selections from the Blue Max, these were squeezed out. Three full and important movie themes got the axe.

However, all but "The Ghost and the Darkness" are readily available and not overly expensive as is the "Ghost" CD. This is a must have for the TV and movie music fan.

Before there was Hans Solo there was Napolean Solo, before ER there was Dr. Kildare. Jerry Goldsmith IS Sci-Fi. "Resistance is futile.. you MUST assimilate this CD collection."

How can you go wrong with Russian rockabilly surfers? The Red Elvises formed in Santa Monica, California, in 1996 when three Russians from Siberia decided to put together a surf-rock group. (And you thought Yakov Smirnoff was funny?) The tunes are good but nothing spectacular; as long as you keep in mind these are Russians, you'll at least have a smile on your face. The Brian Tyler score is interspersed (along with dialogue) throughout the disc. It's a nice blend of L.A. cool, not so much in the vein of Pulp Fiction but of Destiny Turns on the Radio (pleasant yet desperate-sounding). Standouts include the warm "Relentless Sun" and the pseudo-Russian-traditional "Sahara Burn." --Aaron Tassano

5 out of 5 stars One of a kind.......2007-01-05

A bit strange but great movie. Good acting good martial arts and music. "Nice shoes"

5 out of 5 stars Rockin'.......2005-02-05

Starting off with a blast (literally) of the apacolypse, the track "The United States of Russia" plays a slow chorus with a perfect guitar note, a combination that peforms what can only be called Badass Doom. It's a very short, unmelodic track that is wonderful for beginning.

But it's not a song. The Red Elvises make that their prelude as they rip right into the soundtrack with surfer guitar tracks. There are drums and the occasional vocal in the background, but the guitars deservedly steal the show. "Love Pipe" almost seems empty, but it's too much fun not to enjoy.

The Red Elvises aren't alone on the soundtrack though. Brain Tyler scores sections as well, not very prominently at first, but he is there. "Mother's Hand/Buddy" gives a musicbox melody for The Kid, and then a gritty guitar theme for Buddy before handing things over to the Red Elvises again.

Dividing the score between the two is unfair, but appropriate, because unlike some movies where the score and soundtrack don't fit, with one dropping the load and the other stealing the show (such as for "Spider-man 2", where Danny Elfman's score outshines the lackluster songs), the songs and score for "Six-String Samurai" work together wonderfully, even though they each have their own halves (the Red Elvises dominate the first half, while the second half is mostly Brian Tyler score cues.)

Don't look for anything of granduer though. This album is set right to the film, even including dialogue snippets from time to time. The Red Elvises specialize in surf tunes, with the occasional jazzy bit here and there, while Brian Tyler takes their surfer style and matches it to the guitars used in most post-Morricone western tunes, but never does it turn into an orchestral bit. Not that orchestral bits are bad; I love them. But they wouldn't fit.

I'm tempted to call this soundtrack an aquired taste, because not everyone will enjoy this. However, most people love to have fun, and as the Red Elvises' song "Jerry's Got the Squeeze Box" evidences, that's what this soundtrack wants to promote: Have fun.

5 out of 5 stars fun movie, fun sound track.......2002-04-06

the RED ELVISES are a great band. the only way to capture their music is to imagine being in a vegas style 1950's/60's lounge in modern day russia that features a band playing surfer rock.... they are great. i can't think of another band that is as much fun while being as entertaining as the RED ELVISES. the sound bytes from the movie are fun, especially if you have seen the film. if you haven't seen the film go see the movie and then buy the sound track. if you have seen the film buy this sound track and then go see the film again.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2000-11-21

I saw the film, and then said: I must own the soundtrack. I love it. It started a craze among my friends. We now all love the Red Elvises (the main band on the album). I listen to it while driving, while studying, and just about everything else. This surf rock on this album is amazing.

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie, Great Soundtrack.......2000-08-06

This soundtrack fits the movie well. Two completely different concepts combined in an explosive mix. Who ever has not seen the Six-String Samuri is missing out on probably the best indie film ever! The movie combines comedy and action in a sort of "Spinal Tap" way. The soundtrack has some of the most creative music and lyrics in a long time, "commies" playing rock n' roll, what is this world coming to

Boskovsky's encyclopedic collection with the Vienna Philharmonic, recorded between 1957 and 1976, is as close to definitive as one is likely to get. There was a special camaraderie between Boskovsky and the Philharmonic--he was a member of the orchestra's violin section for 37 years and conducted their New Year's Day concerts from 1955 until 1979. There was also a special empathy that these performers, as custodians of a tradition going back to its origins, felt for the music of the Strauss family. It comes across quite wonderfully on these mid-price CDs, which have been painstakingly remastered for an edition every collector should have. --Ted Libbey

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Superb collection.......2006-03-07

If you love or are just curious about the music of Vienna's Strauss family, this is the box set for you. You need look no further. Willi Boskovsky and the Vienna Philharmonic set the standards for the performance of these sublime waltzes, polkas and marches. The sound is fine, too, even though the recordings are not new. This is, quite simply, a magnificent set. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

5 out of 5 stars Boskovsky and the Strauss Family of Vienna........2003-06-12

A long series of Strauss music recordings conducted by Willi Boskovsky provides the contents of this slender, super-compact box of 6 CDs. Those who collected the original issues should check the contents before jettisoning them, because not everything has been reissued here. I especially regret that the vocal version of "An der schönen blauen Donau" has been omitted.

No combination has ever excelled Willi Boskovsky and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra in performing this repertoire. Although the waltzes, polkas, quadrilles, marches and overtures were performed over and over again by these musicians, there is never a hint of workaday routine or staleness to be heard here. Everything seems to unfold naturally. Each item's inherent character is displayed. Tiny nuances and felicities of phrasing and a balance that favors the melody and reduces the accompaniment make these performances inimitable. The performance of "Morgenblätter" seems to provide a tad more excitement and impact than the other 85 items.

The recordings were made between 1960 and 1976. They are studio recordings, not deriving from the famous New Year concerts, and all but the few items from the very earliest year provide excellent sound.

5 out of 5 stars Strauss's Lover Must Own!!!!!.......2001-10-09

Budget Price..... Recording and sound are good to excellence .... Let's enjoy and touch the spirits of Vienna now.....

4 out of 5 stars WARNING! DO NOT LISTEN TO IN DARK OR BY YOURSELF!.......2003-07-04

This is some scary [stuff] we're talking about here! I made a huge mistake and listened to it in the dark (I almost [wet] my pants!) Marco Beltrami must be either messed up or really good to compose music like this. I gave it four stars because the length was horrible - I needed more! And so did everyone else!

Pick up Scream 3 too! The best score of the series!

4 out of 5 stars Pretty scary...before it peters out at some parts..........2002-10-16

Thank God Marco Beltrami has enough of a scoring career under his belt or else the "Scream and Scream 2" soundtrack would just be noise. There are some pretty terrifying moments, anything other than that is not delivered. There isn't much emotion in horror movies, but I must admit, "Scream" is a very scary movie. The only real emotion is horror movies is crying, which symbolizes sadness and fear, thus the screaming, thus the title..."Scream". The music is really scary, and at some moments the electronic effects added for scares don't work that well. The full orchestral pieces deliver the real scares. "Trouble in Woodsboro" is a pretty dumb song and it isn't very scary. "A Cruel World" and "Evil Among Us" are very short cues and they don't really have much percussion, especially the latter.
"Altered Ego", "Chasing Sidney", and "Love Turns Sour" are obviously chase sequence tracks, but "Love Turns Sour" is more of an, dare I say it, emotional track for the first half, until Ghost Face shows up. "Stage Fright Requiem" uses full orchestra, then a techno song, then back to orchestra for a big bang finale to a track from when Sid's boyfriend gets killed on stage. "Hollow Parting" is a very weird track; it had me wondering where it was played in the film. "Hairtrigger Lunatic" is one track that brings this album back where it belongs...to the scares. "Dewpoint and Stabbed" uses a sort of love theme for Dewey and Gale with some twangy guitar, and then he obviously gets stabbed.
"Sidney's Lament" is a pretty eerie song. "Sundown Search" uses the electronic effects to no effect because it didn't get me scared, or a little shaken up even. The whole CD could have done without it, but what are you gonna do? "Deputy for a Friend" was kind of an ode to Dewey, so it wasn't that bad. Marco Beltrami saves this score with thick, dramatic orchestrations or else, like I said before, it would just be noise. The CD has a good duration but it could have been longer. I know there was more music played in the film. If you want to buy something that you can't listen to at night or alone during the day, buy this. Some moments will surely have you on the brink of pissing your pants, others....won't.

1 out of 5 stars Nice try, Varese!.......2002-03-14

This has got to be the mother of all bad soundtrack releases! The score itself is fantastic. Why I gave this album 1 star is because it is a 2 scores on 1 CD, and its total is 30:00! This is not the fault of Varese Sarabande... Let's just hope an expanded release surfaces some day. It's doubtful, but one can still hope.

I would suggest not picking this up unless you are a die hard fan of these scores. And the SCREAM 3 album ain't too much better either.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent, but REALLY short!.......2000-12-11

This CD is unbeatable, but where is everything? There's a lot of stuff missing and the tracks are really short! Cici Creepies is pretty scary, but it gets kinda boring. They should have had the part where she's being chased! And what about Casey's death? It's not on here along with others like Tatum's death and the big scene at the end of Scream 2. (my favorite ending in any movie)However, what Beltrami lacks in length makes up with quality. I like the way he has really low brass and really high trumpets! My favorite track on here is Love Turns Sour. It gives a real strong sense of fear. This song was also used in the car scene on Halloween H20. I would strongly recommend this along with his other masterpiece, MIMIC.

4 out of 5 stars Marco's Brilliant Masterpiece.......2000-11-30

I have searched high and low for this CD, I can finally listen to most of the scores from the Scream and Scream 2 films. However, there were a few scores not included in the CD, and the guitar substitute for Dewey's Theme in Scream 2 just doesn't give as much justice. But alas, I can still watch the films for that. Overall, if you love suspenseful and meaningful scores, Marco has given a great performance.

The music is excellent, with high quality sound. Not irritating as some classical music can be. Plus the tempo's are varied which is great depending if you need something fast paced or more slow. Best of all, the kids enjoyed it!

How to gently insert a little culture into the grandkids' lives without Mom freaking out.....send this set of CDs for Christmas. Dad's into heavy metal and Mom, although she has a long history of listening to Classical music as a child, is now into Country. Nothing wrong with that, but how are the three little ones going to hear any of the Classics with Grandma living more than 600 miles away? "Play this in the background while they're having creative time," said I, "and see if they don't enjoy it." When I talked with them a week later the 4 year old couldn't wait to tell me how much he liked the "playtime music" I'd sent him. The quality of the recording is good and the variety of rhythms and tempos make it interesting. Yes they're a little trite and you're going to have to explain that the theme to "the Bad News Bears" really is Classical, but that's okay. If they skipped the genius of Mozart as an infant, or even if they teethed to "the Magic Flute", these CDs will give them a taste of a variety of good music and who knows how far into the Classical realm it may send them as they mature?

This double-disc treat covers Morricone's work from 1965 to 1995 and contains mostly never-before-released material from 40 different motion pictures, many of which demonstrate his quirkier side. Many are from less-known films like To Forget Palermo and What Am I Doing in the Middle of the Revolution? But there are also more famous tracks like the main titles to Cinema Paradiso and My Name Is Nobody as well as the haunting "Chi Mai" from Maddalena. Though best known for his much-imitated and oppressively cute spaghetti-Western themes, Morricone here demonstrates his much more intriguing romantic and melancholic sides. His title song to Farewell to Moscow is among his saddest and menacing works and, like several other selections, can be the preferred antidote to Prozac. --Joseph Lanza

4 out of 5 stars The men up there don't like a lot of blabber........2005-10-11

The Little Mermaid was the film that revitalized the animation division of Disney. The great songs in the movie by Howard Ashman and Alan Menken were at least partially responsible for the film's success. Wonderful songs like "Part of Your World", "Under the Sea" and "Kiss the Girl". But, unfortunately, there aren't enough songs to fill up an entire album, so the second half of the CD consists of the instrumental score. It's a good score, certainly, but it's not as enjoyable to listen to as the songs. But fans of the film should get this CD, anyway.
