Customer Reviews:
What you see is what you get.......2006-12-10
The young rock star with a flashy guitar and in-your-face attitude on the cover of this CD should have told me a thing or two about its contents. No false advertising here: Gomes delivers on both guitar flash and attitude. The funky grooves are in the pocket, but his overly distorted, squawk 'n' squeal guitar solos sound more like '80s glam-rock than the blues. That said, Gomes does deliver soulful vocals. And the gospel-tinged backup singers are right there with him. The songwriting is upbeat and catchy, but not without a few clunkers. On "Testify," for example, Gomes painfully rhymes the words "soul" and "ear hole" (still makes me cringe). Maybe I need another dose of this kid's medicine. Until then, consider me unconverted.
Anthony Rocks.......2006-11-10
CD was well worth the wait!!!!!AAAAAAAAAAAAA+++++++++++ Anthony & Biscuit!!! The only thing better than the cd is hearing Anthony live!
A FABULOUS WORK OF ART!.......2006-09-08
Wow...what a wonderful artist! In this day of x-rated lyrics that promote disrespect and violence, how refreshing it is to have an artist like Anthony Gomes who is obviously trying to spread the word of friendship, faith and love. It seems that his lyrics are like a window into his soul, and this is such goodness there! Very uplifting, I highly recommend. His guitar work is incredible...Stevie Ray comes to mind. I think folks are going to take notice of this deserving young man and there will be many more cd's to come!
DIG IT!.......2006-08-28
YEA BROTHER, U GOT IT TOTALLY GOIN ON!
AND THAT'S WHAT I'M TALKIN ABOUT!!
PEACE,
TURK
Gimme another dose!.......2006-08-25
This is a terrific disc showcasing Gomes' growth as an artist. Those familiar with his work already know him for his powerful vocals and incendiary guitar, this new CD brings funk, rock, R&B and the blues together in a manner that few artists could pull together without sounding contrived or manufactured.
The disc has a little of something for everyone, and taken as a whole is a tremendous piece of work...I'm not sure what else to add that hasn't already been said more eloquently by other reviewers already. Buy it.
It's great to know that there are still musicians around that realize that love and music are two things that can truly change the world. Thanks, AG and company.

Seems like only yesterday the Kronos Quartet stepped up their career as musical mavericks with a coveted, wide-open contract with Nonesuch Records. Now it's Nonesuch's turn to give Kronos the big-package nod, gathering key works recorded by the group--from younger composers and time-tested veterans alike--into this 10-CD box set. As one might expect, the set is stuffed with contrasts, from the first CD, with its 11-part, upstepping John Adams suite and then the far more solemn Missa Syllabica from Arvo Pärt. Nearly 20 of these pieces here were composed expressly for Kronos, pitched and sculpted for their easily-racked mixture of straightforward string quartet roles and intelligently restructured approaches to the even the simplest gestures. Perhaps most key here is George Crumb's Black Angels, in large part due to Crumb's role in inspiring David Harrington to form Kronos 25 years ago. Crumb's music spirals and chases through the air, engaging high pitches and fast pacings as if they were ends in themselves. Gone from this set are most of the short snippets that have filled some of Kronos's other fine single CD recordings. In abundance instead are some of the legendary works: Morton Feldman's long, endlessly patient Piano and String Quartet (with Aki Takahashi), Steve Reich's unnerving Different Trains, and Henryk Górecki's String Quartets Nos. 1 and 2. There are also some of the astounding Eastern European works from Night Prayers as well, including the stunning Quartet No. 4 from Sofia Gubaidulina. And of course there are the Kronos biggie pieces: Philip Glass's works fill one CD, and so do Terry Riley's. What's more, Riley's Cadenza on the Night Plain and "G Song" are presented here in entirely fresh, new recordings. What the listener gets is a huge block of music, full of shifting colors and textures but perfectly apt in giving a wide-angle vantage on what Kronos has done for contemporary music. --Andrew Bartlett
Customer Reviews:
A worthwhile investment.......2003-10-06
It would be an understatement to say that this is a fabulous box set. All 10 CDs are packed with some fabulous music that beautifull highlights the first 25 years of the Kronos Quartet, and the booklet included provides a great history of the group as well as nice blurbs on the composers and their pieces.
Equally nice about the box set is the inclusion of multiple new recordings, thus making this a worthwhile investment for fans. The Peter Sculthorpe Quartets are a particularly nice addition, as are the added Piazzolla, Part, and Riley compositions.
Along with this, the "classic" Kronos recordings are all here: "Black Angels" "Different Trains" "Salome Dances for Peace" (well, exceprts), and Feldman's Piano and String Quartet. Of particular note, I think is the inclusion of Gubaidulina's Quartet No 4, a fabulous recording that is otherwise hidden in Kronos' recording "Night Prayers."
Yes, this is quite an investment, but I firmly believe that it's worth it - longtime fans and newcomers alike have a lot to gain from this collection.
Excelent compilation!.......2001-09-09
I like more classic period, like Hayden, but Cronos does it very well, technicaly excelent. The ten sets are wonderful recordings and the selection is unique. It deserves the investment, If you buy it, youre going to have more than ten hours of joy.
Amazingly Now Retrospective.......2001-06-26
Since their youthful start in the NW back in the 70's, Kronos has collaborated with, commissioned, or just played such a breadth of musicians it almost seems that breadth - and especially non western world culture - is their mission. But, while this conservatively and esthetically designed 25-yr-retrospective box (with its increasingly sophisticated photo-portraits) belies the pulsation of social angst and conscience that underlies the bulk of the inclusions, the latter concern, its vitality and relevance - and not some stylish chasing after cultural breadth - is what overtakes the listener/reader, rather soon. I say reader, since the booklet is very helpful, especially to the relative novice, and well balanced in its coverage of composers, historical contexts, performers, individual texts, etc.
There are probably more non contemporaries performed by the Quartet over the years than this selection would indicate. That undercuts their ties with the sense of revolution in music throughout the ages, but it leaves more time for the present: and that is where one expects the group wishes to be, is most contributory and challenged, and is best and most fairly judged. Highly recommended, both for those who know Kronos's work well and wish a handsome tribute on their shelf, and for those who do not but are open and ready to be affected, whether impacted esthetically, reminded socio-morally, or whatever combination of both befits.
How Could You Not Listen?.......1998-12-19
My opinion pales when compared to this CD. Indeed the group's ingeniousness, its knowing and its balls are in full display here, hopefully to put to rest any lingering contention that there is little more to Kronos than form. To any person who accepts the merits of 20th-century music, this CD presents the genius of our culture and teaches that daring and ingenuity do not have to be sacrificed on the road to technical brilliance. My only regret is that the CD does not include Kronos's interpretation of Bartok. But, so what? Górecki's here, as are Part and Benshoof. Listen to this CD -- soar and struggle with it.
Good for help to know up-to-date contemporaly music.......1998-11-28
The Kronos Quartet has released many albums. There let us see what the quartet has tried new titles and arrenges in each period. But this is the best set for understand the quartet as summary of thier works. The CDs are distributed by each composers and we can see thier identities easily.Unfortunately this dose not include all but be enough to see what the quartet has been.I hope that every classical music fans(not only contemporaly music fans) listen this CDs.

Caustic Resin's fortune will forever be linked with that of Built to Spill, since Resin vocalist/guitarist Brett Netson helped Doug Martsch launch BTS back in 1993. Though Netson played only on BTS's debut, Ultimate Alternative Wavers, the two bands joined forces for an EP a couple of years ago.
Lest you think that Caustic Resin sound just like Built to Spill, be assured otherwise. Caustic Resin sound like no other band. As with most bands hailing from Boise, Idaho, this decade-old trio has developed its own distinct sound, seemingly unaware of everything else happening in the rest of the Northwest (or the world, for that matter). If anything, Martsch copped some of his moves from Caustic Resin.
Caustic Resin's third album (for as many independent labels) is a towering wave of surging psychedelia. Despite being a power trio, these sweaty cats can just as easily unleash massive washes of guitar swirl with heavy plodding rhythms, or slide into subtle, melodic passages. Though they've refined their songwriting skills enough to sometimes come off like BTS's (drug-addled) redheaded stepchild, much of the material on The Medicine Is All Gone sounds like Neil Young's Crazy Horse playing with their amps on 11 after ingesting too many magic mushrooms. It has a transporting, otherworldly quality that is absolutely sublime and probably best enjoyed in the company of a bong.
Caustic Resin may always be joined at the hip to BTS, but with this stellar effort they've confidently carved out a sound all their own--simultaneously heavy, loose, and insidiously catchy. --Adem Tepedelen

A Different Kind of Stoner Rock.......2003-07-05
If you sniff the CD you can smell pot. Go ahead try it. But that's not a bad thing. Here and on Fly Me to the Moon, Caustic Resin are absolutely astounding. Both are mired in bong hits and heavy psychedelia. Not surprisingly, it sounds like Built to Spill playing Deep Purple or Sabbath. But that also is too simplistic a comparison. A lot goes on in these songs, there's much depth to them. And don't think that this is metal. It isn't. It's heavy but in no way would I call it metal. Having made the stoner rock comparison I would also say they do not sound like Kyuss, Queens of the Stone Age, Orange Goblin, Spirit Caravan, Earthlings? or any other stoner rock band out there. There's an organicness to their sound and a beauty that disappears after this album.
The best track on the album does not belong on it. Man from Michigan is an awesome song. When I think of what indie music sounds like this is the song that comes to mind. It sound nothing like anything else on the album. It has a completely different texture. Nevertheless, the album would be a far sorrier affair without it.
I think this is good.......1999-10-24

ALWAYS LIFTS ME UP.......2005-10-02
I love this album, any time I'm feeling down, I put it on and it always moves me in a very emotional way from laughter and awe at his talented guitar work (Corn Cob Soup), to the emotional plea in (Someone Call an Angel Down). The rebelious (Warshack)and(Jaded Are My Wings)to the spiritual (Heaven) and (The End of the World). I have followed Derek throughout his career, and he never ceases to amaze me with his talent. For those who have never heard his music, you're missing some of the best music since Robbie Robinson. A rising star to be reckoned with.
I'm well now!.......2005-03-01
I was in a state of awe after listening to this album which although was release a few years ago, was very new to me. For a first album to contain such spirit, talent and genre diversity is refreshing. I was moved by every song on the cd, which was also a first for me. This cd should be in every household worldwide.

Album Description
Wild Indians/Gary Small Voted "Songwriter of the Year" Native American Music Awards. Wild Indians is a contemporary Native American recording by Gary Small, a Northern Cheyenne Indian and accomplished guitarist and vocalist. The music is a tribute to Small's heritage and also addresses the issues and stereotypes that Native Americans face today. The music is seeped heavily in Small's influences, Bob Marley and Carlos Santana. His band has a stellar percussion section led by former 12 year veteran Santana Drummer, Graham Lear who's work can be heard on numerous Santana recordings from the 70's and 80's.

Mesmerizing and Energizing!!.......2001-08-29
You know, there's music and then there's Music. Gary Small will transport you to a place you didn't know existed. His artistry is unlike anything I had ever heard before! I've read his playing can be compared to the beloved Carlos Santana - and man, does he prove it on this CD! His lyrics are honest and heartfelt; his sense of humor comes through loud and clear; and his guitar playing is absolutely soul-moving. The band, as a whole, creates truly a work of art. Don't let this CD pass you by! It will be in my "treasured" collection. Check out his "cool" website as well. Kudos, Gary Small.
