The sixties still swing.......2006-12-07
What great sounds there were in the sixties! The tune "Music to Watch Girls By" is even better in stereo, but kudos to the record label for including the mono version as well. These are mostly instrumental covers of sixties pop tunes and standards; for me, the standouts are a downtempo "Let's Hang On" and the theme from "Barbarella." Bob Crewe wrote the liner notes; these are unintentionally humorous, as the far-from-humble Crewe brags about how he composes and arranges without knowing how to read music or play an instrument. Crewe doesn't explain why "Birds of Britain" and "Street Talk," the only other Bob Crewe Generation singles to hit the Billboard charts in the latter part of the sixties, aren't included in this "Best of" compilation. They should have been.
Good....If you like this sort of thing.......2006-11-28
This will probably not appeal to too many. You have to actually like the 1960s version of "Big Band". If you do like that sort of thing, you will probably like this.
There is much reason to compare this to some of Herb Alpert and the TJB type of music. It has a bit less flavor and used a bigger band but it is the same sort of instrumental romp, heavy on brass, which features simple but catchy tunes.
These guys are not as good as the TJB and the quality of the recordings (One is even Mono!) is not as high as that of Herb Alpert but it is still an enjoyable session.
THE HERB ALPERT SOUND WITHOUT THE SOMBREROS..........2006-07-08
... groovy mid-60's easy listening - Austin Powers would approve.
What You Need To Know About THis Release.......2006-03-15
"Music To Watch Girls By" (the Diet Pepsi-Cola jingle) was transformed into a top 15 smash hit, which led to several successful albums. Bob Crewe has personally selected the best 18 tracks from those albums, which are included in "The Best Of The Bob Crewe Generation." The songs are a mix of well-known pop songs plus several Bob Crewe originals. As a bonus track, the mono single version of "Music To Watch Girls By" also appears. Most of these songs are being issued on CD for the very first time.
I was waiting for it........2006-02-24
I was looking for this record to become a CD as I still own a vynil mono sound record. Recordings and sound are great.
I look forward to see the album " Let me touch you " released in CD. For collectors and Bob Crewe fans this album is very very good.

Customer Reviews:
Completing a great trilogy of easy-listening compilations.......2005-03-31
Following the success of Music to watch girls by and More music to watch girls by, this volume contains further classic easy-listening music from the fifties and sixties. This type of music has a significant fan base in Britain as the more recent series of compilations (Memories are made of this) proves.
This collection begins and ends with Tom Jones, though neither of the tracks (What's new pussycat, Help yourself) would have been considered easy listening back in the ties - they were among Tom's rocking hits. Between those two classics, there are plenty of other equally brilliant tracks.
Apart from Tom Jones, some other great singers here are represented by more than one song - Andy Williams (Spooky, House of bamboo, Speak softly love), Petula Clark (My love, This is my song), Tony Bennett (Shadow of your smile, Stranger in Paradise) , Johnny Mathis (Twelfth of never, Misty) and Dinah Washington (Unforgettable, Mad about the boy).
There are other famous classics here including Volare (Dean Martin), Mack the knife (Bobby Darin), I say a little prayer (Aretha Franklin), Smile (Nat King Cole), Always something there to remind me (Sandie Shaw), God only knows (Beach boys), It's impossible (Perry Como), You're my world (Cilla Black), Secret love (Doris Day), Dream a little dream of me (Mama Cass) and Light my fire (Jose Feliciano).
Of all the tracks here, Je T'aime moi non plus (Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin) has the most interesting history. Serge originally recorded I as a duet with Brigitte Bardot but was not allowed to release that version at the time (it has since been released on CD) so he recorded another version - this time with English-born but French-based Jane Birkin. The BBC banned it but that only served to generate interest in the record, which became a huge hit all over Europe. It went to number one in Britain and many other countries
I was particularly pleased to find Cherry pink and apple blossom white (Perez Prado), Guantanamera (Sandpipers), Windows of the world (Scott Walker) and A walk in the Black Forest (Horst Jankowski) as I didn't have those tracks elsewhere on CD at the time and all of them are brilliant.
This is a magnificent compilation of easy listening music from the fifties and sixties. With 43 tracks, it contains more tracks than the first two volumes (38 and 40 tracks respectively) but the quality is the same.
This album rocks, baby!.......2002-08-18
"House of Bamboo" alone is worth the price! Fun stuff, but I agree with the other reviewer, skip the orgasm song! Yikes!
Loads of fun (but avoid Jane Birkin's orgasmic breathing).......2001-05-20
This is by far the best of the three volumes to come out so far. If you're an oldie who's been collecting albums for years, you may find this is just full of duplicates of old songs you have elsewhere. But if you're a young'un like me then this is a brilliant introduction to the easy listening genre of the 50s, 60s and 70s. Some of them'll tug on the heartstrings, and loads of them are just plain fun (Louis Prima's 'Just a Gigolo', Perez Prado's 'Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White' with some really crazy trumpet playing). 'What's New Pussycat?' (Tom Jones) is one to memorise and do at the karaoke sometime (like I did). If anyone knows how to erase track 5 on CD2 let me know cos it is just foul, so avoid that one ('Je T'aime Moi Non Plus' featuring Jane Birkin simulating an orgasm)!

The first of a great trilogy of easy-listening compilations.......2007-05-18
This compilation of classic easy-listening music from the fifties and sixties sold so well that two sequels were released (More music to watch girls by, Music to watch girls by volume 3). This type of music has a significant fan base in Britain as the more recent series of compilations (Memories are made of this) confirms.
This collection features three songs by Vic Damone (On the street where you live, Almost like being in love, It had to be you) and two each by Andy Williams (Music to watch girls by, Can't take my eyes off you), Petula Clark (Don't sleep in the subway, Downtown), Doris Day (Perhaps perhaps perhaps, Move over darling) and Nancy Sinatra (These boots are made for walking, Sugar town).
There are other famous classics here including Spanish eyes (Al Martino), Beyond the sea (Bobby Darin), Moon River (Danny Williams - no relation to Andy as far as I know, but Danny's version was a UK number one hit), Magic moments (Perry Como), That's amore (Dean Martin), Love letters in the sand (Pat Boone) and Let there be love (Nat King Cole) - and that's just a few of them.
This is a magnificent compilation of easy listening music from the fifties and sixties. With 38 tracks, there is plenty to enjoy.

Music only your (grand)mother could love.......2001-05-13
I'm a huge fan of Al's mellow-but-mighty horn sound, but even he can't save most of the music on this album from fading into the wallpaper. There are some good tracks, but mostly it's just very blah. I guess 40 years ago these were hits, and I'm just barely old enough to even remember some of them. Al, as always, wrings the last drop from them, but some of them just don't contain much musical worth to begin with. If you've got all his other albums, or are curious as to what he'd do with some of these songs, as I was, buy it; otherwise, go for one of his better albums.

A selection of hits and covers.......2005-07-05
New compilations of Andy's music are released at regular intervals, with many of the songs reappearing. So it is that this compilation contains a selection of Andy's classic hits (though there are some notable omissions, especially Almost there and Home loving man) and many of his covers of other people's hits.
This particular compilation features his duet version of Can't take my eyes off you with Denise Van Outen, but most if not all of the other tracks have been released on earlier compilations of Andy's music. It begins with Music to watch girls by, which became Andy's first UK top ten hit for 26 years following its use in a commercial, and ends with that duet with Denise Van Outen. In between, you will find the other classic songs associated with Andy (not all of them hits for him) including Happy heart, Born free, Can't get used to losing you, Can't help falling in love, Solitaire, Moon river, May each day, Days of wine and roses and his solo version of Can't take my eyes off you.
Andy's distinctive interpretations of songs made famous by others are well represented too. These include Up up and away, The impossible dream, On the street where you live, Unchained melody, Spooky, Something stupid, Raindrops keep falling on my head, The look of love, We've only just begun and Stranger on the shore.
This is not the definitive Andy Williams hits collection but nevertheless provides a fine introduction to his music.

A must for Popular Music fans.......2002-03-21
This album is fantastic! I came across it by accident in a record store but boy am I glad I bought it. It contains absolutely wonderful easy listening classics from the 50's/60's that one doesn't generally find on pop music CD's such as Fly me to the Moon and Theme from a Summer Place. It is wonderful for party music. ...Some of [my friends] have bought the CD when they heard it. This album is so good that I also bought More Music to Watch Girls By and Music to Watch Girls By (Volume 3). Value for Money? 12 stars!! Get em all!!!

Customer Reviews:
Calling all Bachelors..........2007-06-19
Compilation producer Dan Rivard must have really burnt both ends of the candles in the COLUMBIA vault. This three disc set as a fellow writer has listed is a retro blast to the past. All these recordings date back to 50s and 60s and are digitally enhanced, sounding better than ever. Gotta love that era's ping-pong, speaker to speaker stereo effects. This set is filled with rarities. Anywhere else in your collection; do you have George Maharis, Jack Lemmon, Sophia Loren, or Buddy Greco performing songs at their campy best? Satchemo does his 1955 rendition of "Mack the Knife", recorded over 50yrs. ago, it comes off like he's in your living room. So start mixing and get those cocktails served! Lets' get this party started!
