My Country II [EP]
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Summoning the ghosts of Phil Ochs and Woody Guthrie, Southern California's most irreverent town crier throws his hat in with the anti-Bush crowd and lobs a grenade or seven for good measure. A few wind up as duds: tyranny may come with no surprises, but then neither does the song, and Bern doesn't do the gay-rights movement any favors by fantasizing about allowing monkeys to marry. Much more biting and catchy are the mass-media satire "Ostrich Town," the brutal troop support of "After the Parade" (a soldier's wheelchair remains the most devastating antiwar image), and the obscure Pete Seeger poem "The Torn Flag," with its call to redesign old glory's revolutionary ideals. The blue-state hit "Bush Must Be Defeated" (rhymes with "Rose Garden weeded" and "goodbye coffee heated") closes this EP with a drum machine and a final plea: "Do not vote your conscience!" These satires will make a fine souvenir of the 2004 election, but they're not likely to age well after the last ballot is counted. --Roy Kasten

Going for Baroque.......2003-01-09
Here lies master collection from ten years and fifty discs of examples from baroque era performed by choirs, soloists and instrumentalists.
Conducted by energetic Robert King and his King's Consort, this is just superb!
It will introduce one to baroque or add to one's enjoyment. Especially enjoyed Purcell's "Hear my prayer, O Lord" and Gabrieli's "Salvator noster."

As fans of musical theater, we're used to offbeat projects, but this long-forgotten show takes the cake--and it's completely entrancing. The opening number alone makes nasty fun of the then-popular beatniks and is immediately followed by "New York," a list song enumerating all the awful things about the city. Rarely has so much bile been spilled on the New York stage--but perhaps that's because the show originated in St. Louis. Tommy Wolf's finger-snapping score and Fran Landesman's biting lyrics are very compelling, especially because it's hard to tell when they're serious and when they're drily sarcastic. The energetic cast, which includes Larry Hagman (best known as JR in Dallas), is backed by a jazz quartet, and the result often sounds strangely contemporary. And then you have some numbers, such as "Night People," that are almost Sondheimian. What a strange, wonderful little show this is. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
Customer Reviews:
An underrated gem!.......2003-06-03
The songs in this musical are simply wonderful! Canny, passionate, "beat," and sardonic. The story, its characters, and the lyrics are classic Greenwich Village of the late 1950's. This CD features talented singers and actors (including a very young Larry Hagman),a great lyricist, lush and complex music. To reiterate, it's just WONDERFUL! I ruined my LP long ago, and am THRILLED to find this CD replacement.
Dig that beat..........2002-02-28
A fun recording to have on CD. Very beatnik oriented musical from 1959 with such interesting names in the cast as Tom Aldredge (Into the Woods, Passion) and Larry Hagman!? The song "New York" is a lot of fun. The best of the rest the score include "The Ballad of the Sad Young Man" sung by Tan Seitz and "Laugh, I Thought I'd Die" sung by Richard Hayes. Larry Hagman has one song, "Travel the Road of Love" and although he doesn't embarrass himself, thank God "I Dream of Jeannie" and "Dallas" were still be come. He definitely did not inherit his mother's singing ability. In fact, I think his mother was performing in "The Sound of Music" during the short run of this show.

A Time and a Place for Everything..........2007-06-12
Besides the excellent hallucinatory track "Sammy's Bat", the rest of this EP doesn't live up to the high standards of Dan Bern's other recorded work. It's probably the most sincere novelty record of all time, though, with Dan's unique take on the state of the union circa 2004, complete with references to G.W., Guantanamo Bay, and Middle East oil. In a couple of years, I might be able to pull out this album (sub-titled "Music to Beat Bush By") and remember where I was when Bush was re-elected.
Dan vs. Bush.......2005-10-22
It's a wonder that Dan hasn't pulled this album. Not only is it dated, but it's also pretty pathetic. Not only is he very well not known, but an album like this becomes laughable in 2005. While I enjoy hearing sad individuals moan through song about the injustice of a demacratic society (yes, Bush WAS re-elected by the American people) as much as anyone else, his song "President" wherein he maps out his first week in office is, for lack of better words, fascinating. On his first day he would undo all border patrol so there would be no more "human smuggling." I think any sane person realizes that "human smuggling" isn't the only thing coming over the borders. I would certainly criticize this unfruitful album some more, but unlike Mr Bern here, I don't waste my time.
Musically the album is okay, albeit Dan's voice sounds like Bob Dylan swollowed Kermit the Frog, the music is interesting and I enjoy some of his earlier work. Unfortunetly this project is weighed down with so much left wing ubsurdity that it's completely unenjoyable. Here's to failed attempts: Kerry and Bern.
Land of Ostriches & Home of the Corporate.......2005-03-14
Dan Bern's "My Country II" is vibrant folk music. It's topical & bubbles with the best protest music. Rather than tracks such as "President," "Bush Must Be Defeated" & the title track seeming outdated because of George Bush's election, this is part of the soundtrack of the continuing protest of a government dominated by Republicans in the executive, congress & in the courts. The music becomes even more on point because of the spiraling debt, intolerance of gays & lesbians and bellicose foreign policy of what has been referred to in the past as "the land of the free."
Brian Schey's bass riffs joyfully on the title track with Bern's lyrical sense in top form, "I don't drive a Mercedes Benz & I don't desire to own one; I'd sooner watch a flower grow than the latest from Sylvester Stallone. I don't have me a country club membership; I ride the Greyhound bus. I don't have a cabin two hours north of here & I don't celebrate Christmas, but it's my country too." Bern sounds like a nouveau Woody Guthrie on "The Torn Flag." "Bush Must Be Defeated" is creative if only for the unique lyrical rhyme that Bern utilizes, "Bush must be defeated, his evil gang unseated, his base of power deleted, his energy depleted." "President" is one of those fantasy tracks of what Bern might do if he were president & is as humorous as it is poignant. "Sammy's Bat" is another of the best tracks on this set with the fast repeat on "I had a dream." "Ostrich Town" is an excellent metaphor for America in the Bush era where the politics of selfishness & greed supercede the traditional American values of caring for others, helping the little guy & loving your fellow man. "After the Parade" is a sad epitaph for how America celebrates its veterans by cutting their benefits and pay. Obviously, this is not music for the right wing. Along with Stephan Smith's "Slash & Burn," some of Rickie Lee Jones', the Mammals & Kate McDonnell's new "Where the Mangoes Are" CD, this is vibrant political music in an era that needs some hope. Enjoy!
After the election is over.......2004-11-19
If you're a real Dan Bern fan ... as am I ... then you'll love this album.
But: As the other reviews indicated, it was a pre-election Bush bash. "Bush must be defeated," sang Bern, but he wasn't. Now what?
Thoughtfully, Dan answered the question on another EP released right before the election: Anthems. While his modified-Guthrie call to vote against Bush as "the greatest thing mankind has ever done" is now a melancholy listen, other songs on Anthems are indeed Anthems for those of us what to do with our electoral energies after the balloting is over.
"Take Back the New Millenium" he sings, "this one was going to be ours." "Planes crashing into airplanes..... can't pull us apart."
"Revolution Begins in the Basement" is Beatlesque in its apparent appeal for political action mixed with surrealism.
I ordered Anthems from MessengerRecords; now it's on Dan's site too. Hopefully Amazon may start carrying it. It's my soundtrack for the next four years.
Dan vs. Bush.......2004-09-02
I've been a Dan fan for many years and have seen him perform many times- mostly at the Vancouver Folk Music Festival. Dan's great strength as an artist is his spontaneity + his musicianship. When he is "on" few can compare.
His "stream of consciousness" approach to his music can also result in performances that don't always match up with his best.
"My Country II", I am very happy to say, is among his best efforts. People who love Dan know that he's great at being smart and sarcastic. When he's empathetic and tender he really shines though. "After the Parade" and "The Torn Flag" are my favorite tunes on the new CD; as good as "Sister" and "Wasteland" from previous CD's.
I've looked forward to the release of this CD and Steve Earle's "The Revolution Starts Now" for the past month. I can hardly believe what's happening to our democracy. I love Steve and Dan but think that Dan has put out the better CD. If you're looking for emotional/spiritual/political support over the next couple of months I'd recommend both of these CD's... unless you're a Republican.

Fine reissue of a classic set.......2006-05-24
Think about the stupidest, most formulaic Hollywood movies you can think of: cheesy action pictures, fluffy, unfunny comedies, big but stiff epics. Now imagine that one of the greatest living composers was working in Hollywood, turning out astonishing, hauntingly beautiful and stirring musical scores for these throwaway movies. That's what you get with this set: music Henry Purcell composed for some two dozen often utterly forgettable plays (trust me--I've read a number of them!) Occasionally, when he teams up with a playwright worthy of his stature, such as John Dryden, Aphra Behn, or William Congreve, the results are even better, but for the most part you can enjoy the music here without knowing anything about the original plays.
This set originally appeared as separate LPs in the 70s and 80s, and has been long out of print. That's a pity, since Purcell spent a good deal of his short professional life in the theatre, either writing the incidental music contained on these CDs, or the music for his larger works, the semi-operas (King Arthur, The Fairy Queen, and the like). Almost all of these works are enjoyable gems; certainly, they represent a pinnacle of English 17th century music. Purcell had a genius for spinning musical gold out of the most leaden lyrics (check out his Odes and Welcome Songs on Hyperion if you don't believe me), and he does the same with the song texts in these plays.
Hogwood and the AAM offer clean, listenable performances, and the sound on these old analog discs has been cleaned up and brightened--although they were pretty good, even in the late 70s. As with most Hogwood, emotional extremes are kept to a minimum, so the "otherworldly" nature of late 17th century music, so often emphasised in more recent Baroque performances, doesn't come across here. It would be interesting to see what a group like The King's Consort would do with this music, but this set fills the major gap in the Purcell canon quite nicely.
My only beef with the reissue, as with many reissues, is that the liner notes are rather thin for a 6-cd set--the lyrics to the songs, for example, are especially missed. Still, it's a worthwhile set, and a must for fans of Purcell, English Baroque music, or anyone who just wants to experience a taste of the last days of the Restoration stage.

Music is performed in its original settings. Beautiful choral work; four singers, two of each gender. Lacks the histrionical egotism found in so many Irish ballad recordings. Very much worth it.

This CD is absolutely wonderful. It would be a great addition to anyones personal collection. When I think about a children's choir, this sound is definitly not what comes to mind. The Spivey Hall Children's Choir is by far the best choir I've ever heard, children or not. They can be heard live at Spivey Hall in May and December every year. The Spivey Hall website would give you exact dates.

Lovely music!.......2001-12-18
These CDs are for lovers of Irish music and of the "old-timey" sound of John McCormack. The songs themselves are lovely, and James Flannery sings them exactly as they need to be sung... in a simple and straightforward manner. The music is evocative of the sound and spirit of a long-ago time. The accompanying book gives interesting background information about Thomas Moore and also about the songs. Good listening for a rainy day or a snowy night with the fire blazing.

Ralph Stanley II has some big shoes to fill: his father is one of the most respected and accomplished musicians in bluegrass, and his uncle, Carter, was the lead-vocal counterpoint to the elder Ralph's mountain tenor in the legendary Stanley Brothers. Listen to My Hammer Ring shows that Stanley the younger is ably carrying on his family's legacy of traditional bluegrass. Playing rhythm guitar and singing lead vocals (Carter's old role) with his father's Clinch Mountain Boys since he was 14 years old, Ralph Stanley II looks like he's being groomed to take over the family business. The father-son duo team up on over half of the album's 12 songs, many of them (older) Stanley originals, which cover the familiar ground of lost love, faith, trains, and good-old mountain dew. --Andrew Scales

Ive been to several festivals in the area, where Ralph and his dad have played. Ralph II has come to our campsite and played music with us. He sang Mary Mary Christmas long before he recorded it . He is a very respectful man, well mannered, and loves music. I think the CD is great and will probobly see you this summer Ralph.
