Editorial Reviews
Product Description
Exclusive Asian pressing features two bonus tracks, 'Directions' (from the Vanilla Sky soundtrack) and 'Love Vibration' which was originally released on his 1972 album. Also included is a bonus booklet (the US didn't include one at all) that features lyrics to all of the tracks (sans the bonus tracks). 'Nashville' is filled with an atmosphere reminiscent of Neil Young's Harvest Moon and Bob Dylan's Nashville Skyline. His special affection for that city in Tennessee is played through a more elegant palette. Rykodisc. 2005.

Customer Reviews:
One of the best guitar albums ever.......2005-12-14
This album focuses on two of the greatest guitarists, who you can easily hear their different styles on this recording.
The production and material is brilliant as well.
Once you could find this recording on a two for one cd, with the other recording they did called Guitar Monsters.
Les Paul supposively showed up with a cold and the performance is not as good. There is more joking around as well.
Never the less, if that recording, buy it. Else, purchase this recording.
By the way, why does Amazon include a 'NO' in 'was this review helpful to you?'. People are only human and don't like opinions that differ from themselves. With some who are less mature, this the 'NO' makes it too easy express such displeasure.
Are they trying to discourage negative reviews, hence not purchase the CD. Such reviews only help a person in not being dissatisfied a product that received positive reviews
Classic meeting of the Greatest!.......2005-07-21
If you don't get any other Chet and/or Les album/CD's, get this one.
It's a wonderful chance to hear two of the greatest electric guitarists together. The vastly different styles of these two are a perfect blend, and the meeting of two old pros is classic. It's a lot of fun and great music.
I'm sure you'll enjoy it.
Shagadelic baby.......2000-01-01
A most excellent listening experience. Two different and distinct styles that when combined with the proper amount of Budweiser creates a most shagariffic time.
Entertainment at its best, for the players and listeners........1999-04-29
Chet Atkins reminds me of my father who used to play every evening in the living room after dinner. He'd listen to this album, get a good laugh, and start playing Caravan or Avalon. I have not seen my father for 20 years now but this record reminds me of those days. Days when I'd rather watch TV instead of listen to dad's picking. Days when country music was definitely not for a 10- or 11-year old growing up in southern California. Now that I have kids with whom I'd like to spend more of my time with, I realize the plain simple fun that my father was trying to have. He wasn't professional, but when he played with friends or relatives, it sounded like the fun Chet and Les are having on this album. I'd really like to dedicate this review to my father who lives somewhere in the US. We've lost contact for the last 20-some years, but I know he's listening to the analog version of this album very often. It was his favorite and now I know why.
This is why those Brits picked up their axes!.......1998-07-12
The playful joy found in the interplay between These two masters of the guitar make you wish this record wouldn't stop! Part of the fun comes from the between songs banter between the "boys" left in tact. My only wish is that it was longer. Just can't get enough of these two together.

Customer Reviews:
At las on CD!.......2005-11-09
I had all 3 albums that make up most of this CD...in the late 1950's /early 1960's. Marty was in great voice; the arrangments are superb...and, if you can listen to these bittersweet, haunting ballads without having your heartstrings plucked...and, eyes misting up..you are stone dead. These are about another time and another place...and,one where Life was often harsh, often all-too-short, but, it was lived full-up, not talked about and analyzed ad nauseum. This time may have not have existed as Marty sings about it, but the strength and purity of the messages are timeless. Oh, yes...for the secularists out there: there are some religious aspects in some of the songs. But, having been in Montana and the Dakotas, you can almost feel a Presence there.
This album is Marty Robbins.......2005-03-27
This is not to say that Marty Robbins did not perform many more and just as great songs. However when you think of ether Marty Robbins or the songs on this album [Gunfighter Ballads & Trail Songs]. As with many I grew up with this album and as one reviewer protests, it is a little unnerving to have the order changed. However I used to skip around anyway. And this is the album to buy for Marty Robbins. You can supplement with his others when you feel the need to expand his collection
It is hard to imagine that you have not heard these songs at some point. So it feels funny describing them to you. These songs are truly ballads. They are not crying in your beer twanging songs. And aside from the country pacing and theme, are close to folk songs. Each song has a story and you are made to feel that you could be singing them your self. In the end you will be singing them.
Two classic western albums.......2003-12-12
Marty recorded many different types of song but he was particularly good at western songs. For those who can afford it, Bear family have released a boxed set containing all Marty's western songs, but the two albums included here contain many of his best western songs.
On this set, you will find Marty's covers of the classic cowboy songs Cool water and The streets of Laredo, but Marty chose to avoid most of the obvious songs. Instead, he wrote some songs himself and recorded a lot of great but obscure songs. Of the songs that he wrote, El Paso is by far the most important. It was a huge international hit and if you are thinking of buying this collection, you probably know this song already.
The remaining songs all tell stories of life in the west in the years following the American civil war. We all know that you can't believe what Hollywood portrays in western movies. The origin of many of these songs is unknown but the picture they paint sounds credible.
Marty was, perhaps, the greatest western singer of them all (although Michael Martin Murphey is another contender for that title) - this collection shows him at his best.
Home on the Range was never this good!.......2002-03-20
Thanks to a friend who asked "who was it that sang El Paso?" has prompted me to take the opportunity to rediscover, after more than 30 years, a singer who put the 'Western' in Country Music. Anyone who enjoys Country and Western should not be without a copy of this marvellous collection of sounds and images of the American 'wild' west. This is a truly classic collection that gives you a story with every song from an exceptional talent singing with a purity that is rare. His gunfighter ballads are the stuff of dreams that transport the listener to the Old West with 'El Paso', 'Big Iron' and 'Cool Water' to name but a few in a selection brimming with great songs.
This is truly great value and is well worth a purchase that will bring you hours of pleasure. I strongly recommend it! Buy it and like me you will not be disappointed.
Postscript:
If you would like to add other albums to your collection, then you cannot go far wrong by choosing compilations such as "The Drifter" which include, amongst others, the amusing 'Cowboy in a Continental Suit' and a saloon showdown in the superb 'Mr Shorty'. Marty's voice suited most kinds of music and you will find in "The Essential Marty Robbins" with its Rock-A-Billy, Hawaiian and even Jazz-influenced music, the versatility that make it almost impossible to choose favourites.
Great CD.......2002-03-07
What can you say Marty Robbins at his best. No one epitomizes western music like he does, notice I said western music not to be confused with country music. And the songs on this album are the classics of that genre and only Marty can do them justice. It's a great album and I have recommended it to all my friends. If you want real western music get this album.

Customer Reviews:
Nice.......2007-07-03
I had most of the songs on this album, but was missing 3. My Patti Page collection has a way to go but I'm getting there.
A very strong hits collection.......2004-10-02
It needs a lot more than eighteen tracks to do full justice to Patti's music but this British budget collection of her fifties music is the strongest available as I write this. Patti was born as Clara Ann Fowler in Oklahoma. Like those other great Oklahoma-born singers of her generation, the Dinning sisters, Patti was steeped in country music tradition but achieved success in pop music although she never forgot her roots.
Patti only had one hit in Britain (How much is that doggie in the window) but might have had more if charts had started earlier than November 1952. Of course, Patti had a lot more success in her homeland, eleven of her hits selling at least a million copies each. They were (in chronological order) With my eyes wide open I'm dreaming (not included on this set), All my love, Tennessee waltz, Would I love you love you love you, Mocking bird hill, Mister and Mississippi, Detour, I went to your wedding, How much is that doggie in the window, Changing partners and Cross over the bridge. So ten of the eleven songs are included and the one that didn't was the lowest-charting hit, peaking at eleven. Exactly how it sold a million without making the top ten is a mystery - it didn't have a long run in the charts.
Apart from those million sellers, Patti had plenty of other hits. Of those included here, Come what may, You belong to me, Why don't you believe me and Steam heat all made the top ten in the period to 1954. As the fifties progressed, Patti found it more difficult to compete against rock'n'roll but still had a few big hits including Let me go lover, Go on with the wedding, Allegheny moon and Old Cape Cod.
Chart students will know that several big hits are missing including I don't care if the sun don't shine, And so to sleep again, Once in awhile and Butterflies, all of which made the top ten, plus others that came close to the top ten. To include all these hits in one compilation would require a double CD.
Of the CD's available at the time of this review, this is the strongest compilation of Patti's music there is. One day, something better might come along but the wait could be a long one.
MARVELLOUS GREATEST HITS COLLECTION.......2003-03-12
There are plenty of Patti Page "Greatest/Golden Hits" collections. If you need one collection of her best Mercury recordings from 1949-1958, this is it. Being a Patti Page FAN I usually buy each new CD as it is released. This collection is certainly a better buy than Mercury's new "20th Century Master's" collection which sells for the same price or even a bit more and only includes 12 cuts.

back to back classics.......2006-05-26
This 21 song treat of good country music is delivered to us by George Jones...and the two albums contained on this CD have long been out of print and are consistently hailed as two of his all-time best. The first album we hear is THE GRAND TOUR from 1974. This was at the time of his marriage to Tammy and it's many ups and downs. Arguably geared to exploit the fascination the fans had with his personal life, "The Grand Tour" shot to #1 as many felt the song was about Tammy Wynette since there was a period where she and George separated...and the line "oh she left me without mercy..." near the end of the song help fuel the soap opera on vinyl. The remaining 10 songs on THE GRAND TOUR are all wonderful! "Once You've Had the Best" was actually the first single...released in late 1973 and hitting the Top-10. That song was written by Johnny PayCheck. Several of the highlights are "The Weatherman"; "She Told Me So"; "Borrowed Angel"; "Pass Me By" {which he re-recorded in 2005} and track #11, "Our Private Life". That song is a growling, intense rant about the public and media and the intrusion of a celebrities personal life and how celebrities are held to a higher standard even though they're human and have weaknesses and vulnerabilities like everyone else. Since every song on THE GRAND TOUR is great, you could be easily happy with just this album alone...BUT, we have 10 more tracks from 1976's ALONE AGAIN album included here. There was only one hit single, 1976's Top-5 hit "Her Name Is..." but the album as a whole was so country, when compared to the countrypolitan sounds of his previous two albums, MEMORIES OF US and THE BATTLE, in late 1975-early 1976. ALONE AGAIN was marketed as an album to exploit the George-Tammy divorce aftermath...the album cover shows George sitting alone in a diner. From the start of the album, "A Drunk Can't Be A Man", it sets the tone for the whole album. The bouncy "Ain't Nobody Gonna Miss Me" i feel was recorded because of the way George perhaps felt about his life at the time. On this album you are also treated to two obscure yet famous album tracks among the Jones fan base: "Stand On My Own Two Knees" and "Right Now I'd Come Back and Melt In Her Arms". These two albums are classics...i know that term is over-rated now-a-days but in this case, the classic label fits these two albums!!
wonderful cd.......2005-06-01
I have been looking for the album, The Grand Tour for years and was finally able to obtain it. George has made many great albums over the years and this combination of two of his 70's albums is possibly the best that I have ever heard in my life! Once again, Jones is the master of country music and after listening to this album, it just goes to show that he is the greatest singer EVER!!!!!
Two brilliant seventies albums.......2005-02-21
George's career (and his life) has had its ups and downs but he has recorded a lot of great country music along the way. This pairing of two seventies albums (Grand tour, Alone again), recorded at around the time of his marriage break-up with Tammy Wynette, provides some of that great music. Despite his personal problems, these albums have their lighter moments although some songs clearly reflect George's problems.
The big country hits here were The grand tour (in which George sings about the memories of Tammy to be found in his house, though he doesn't mention Tammy by name) and Her name is (an amusing song about a secret relationship). Among the many other great songs here are covers of Pass me by (first recorded by Johnny Rodriguez but since covered by several other top country singers), Borrowed angel (Mel Street) and Once you've had the best (Johnny Paycheck).
There are many other excellent tracks here. If you enjoy George's music, you'll love this twofer.
A Double Shot Of Jones, No Chaser..........2004-12-30
This album is the answer to any purist's prayer - two George Jones' albums on one disc, both records out of print. THE GRAND TOUR, released in 1974, and ALONE AGAIN, released after Jones' divorce from Tammy Wynette in 1976, include some fantastic performances and this Canadian release proves that you can never have too much of a good thing.
First we have THE GRAND TOUR, which includes the hit title track which went to number one on the country charts. Co-written by Tammy's future husband George Richey, the song features George pulling out all the stops with his classic vocal delivery. "Once You've Had The Best," written by George's buddy Johnny Paycheck, was also a hit, revealing the singer's tender side and remains a live favorite today. Other highlights include "Pass Me By (If You're Only Passing Through)," "Who Will I Be Loving Now," and "Borrowed Angel," a tune written by Mel Street. Of special interest is "Our Private Life," a song credited to Jones and Wynette, where the President and the First Lady seem to be taking aim at the media gossip that hovered around the daily soap opera that was their married life at the time.
By 1976 Jones and Wynette had divorced and ALONE AGAIN marks the beginning of George's long free-fall to the bottom, although his singing remained stellar. The opening track, "A Drunk Can't Be A Man," was written by George and his friend Earl "Peanut" Montgomery and is a cold heart-felt hard slab of country soul. The novelty hit "Her Name Is" is a veiled nod to Tammy, as could be "Right Now I'd Come Back And Melt In Her Arms" (Jones admits in his autobiography that he didn't give a damn about exploiting his personal life to sell a few records). Another great cut is "Stand On My Own Two Knees," a song about picking up the pieces and moving on, something he knew all about at the time.
THE GRAND TOUR and ALONE AGAIN both feature some filler material (such as "The Weatherman" and "Ain't Nobody Gonna Miss Me") but, as is always the case with this man, they also feature songs that will alter your conception of what a singer is capable of. It's a shame that all of Jones' albums with Epic from the seventies are not reissued, but this is a good start.
looking for years.......2000-08-04
I have'nt received the cd yet but iv'e been looking for the album alone again for18 years.Several years ago I went to Nashville and cound'nt find it and when I tried to order it they would say it was not available.I had this album on 8 track and I thank it is one of george jones best albums. I know it's "only Rock and Roll," but I LOVE it!.......2003-09-13
OK, CERTAINLY it could've been produced better - but, hey, Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, and Jerry Lee Lewis all on one CD, commemorating the birth of Rock and Roll? Like Perkins sings in "Birth Of Rock And Roll," "I was here when it all happened - I watched Memphis give birth to rock and roll." And that's the truth, folks. Yes, it is WAY too slickly produced (WHY Chips Moman and NOT Sam Phillips?), but these guys - and, of course, The King, Elvis - INVENTED Rock And Roll. Notice I said "Rock And Roll" there, NOT "rock," there's all the difference in the world. Yeah, these guys were making this kind of music back when it was DANGEROUS. I guess the current generation knows only of Roy Orbison by way of the (one-off) Traveling Wilburys back in (whew..1988), or Johnny Cash by (ugh) "Boy Named Sue," or Jerry Lee by the allegations of his...naughtiness. But if you want to know how rock and roll originally sounded, check out the afore-mentioned Carl Perkins song, or, especially, Jerry Lee's "Keep My Motor Running." (yup, you can just BET "motor" was a metaphor...) The tour-de-force of the CD, though, is John Fogerty's "Big Train From Memphis," which has a veritable who's who of everybody who was THERE when rock and roll got started, including Sam Phillips, Chips Moman, and some PRIMO rockers, Ricky Nelson and John Fogerty. (It even has the-love(s)-of-my-life, Naomi and Wynonna Judd...) OK, quit listening to your "alt-rock" radio station for about half an hour and dig this CD. You'll understand why a lot of people think Rock and Roll died when Elvis did. And, by the way, get "The Best Of Big Daddy" while IT'S still available!

Old time.......2007-01-09
I love the CD it brings me back to Idaho listening to Conway Twitty and Loretta Lynn. I wish country music was like that again.
Conway Twitty & Loretta Lynn's 20 Gr. Hits.......2003-01-21
This is the best Conway & Loretta collection currently available.
Nearly all of their classic dutes are here .This albums combines the sultry voice of Conway & the angelic touch of Loretta .Unique talent in their own right , when their voices blend its something that only God could have made .I hope one day MCA will have a box set containing all of their hits plus some of there lesser known hits such as "Let me Be There" & "Baby Don't Get Hooked On Me" .Until they do lets us just hold on to this fine sampling of Conway Twitty & Loretta Lynn talent .
wonderful.......1999-10-01
My Mom & Dad had this vinyl album (Lead Me On) when I was a kid and I used to listen to it all of the time. They don't have it anymore but I have never forgotten it!
Conway and Loretta still rule country music duets........1999-07-30
For a decade,Conway Twitty and Loretta Lynn teamed up for some of the finest duets ever recorded in country music. This CD has a lot of their hits, from the early After The Fire Is Gone to the much later You Know Just What I'd Do and a lot of good stuff in between. Cheatin' songs, funny songs, patriotic songs, they're all here to enjoy. The singers' respect and affection for each other propel their songs into another level not often seen today. This CD doesn't include all of their good stuff but it has far more than any other available today and it's well worth buying.
one of the best.......1999-05-29
these are some of the most popular duets with Loretta & Conway. a must have for every fan of LORETTAS & CONWAYS
