Product Description
HIM has come a long way since the early days of founding member Doug Scharin's deep dub missives, emanating from his home studio in Brooklyn. Him is now a full-time touring act featuring members of June Of '44, Rex, Hoover, and Mice Parade. Constantly circling the world with an ever-evolving 7-piece lineup, HiM offers an unique, entrancing groove - driven by a tribal, two-kit rhythm section through Afrojazz and thick dub fusion...and, in the fine tradition of Mr. Scharin's work, thick layers of hypnotic effects. 1 out of 5 stars High Cost, Little Quality.......2007-06-07

This CD is such a disappointment! I sing with a traveling theater group and thought I could practice to this karaoke disc. Not a chance! The quality is poor-synthesized instruments & wrong notes and chords all over the place!Don't even get me started on the sample vocal tracks! I actually discarded this part of the pack as it was painfule to listen to. The vocals are horribly off key. Please, save your money. I know it's exciting to find this wonderful musical in a karaoke version but keep looking. Don't waste your cash on this one!!!

5 out of 5 stars i'm 13, and i need help. (by the way, GO WICKED! luv it.).......2007-05-29

Hey ya'll.
i'm giving this 5 stars because i love wicked a lot (and it's not my top 1, but top 3.so i'm not biased) but i really need to know if the karaoke part is worth buying. i don't care about the instructional singers, just the music. i want to perform this, but plz tell me if it's worth the MUCHO money? thnx!

1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money.......2007-02-01

My daughter needed the karaoke version to perform one of the songs for a show at her school. This version is absolutely horrible. Neither one of us can even stand (or sit)to listen to this cd. What a terrible waste of good hard earned money. Everyone who has purchased this should receive their money back plus 10% and an apology for being subjected to hearing this. Shame on the people who produced this cd and are making money from it.

1 out of 5 stars "well-sung, theatrical vocals..." What cast did they listen to!?.......2007-01-07

I bought this CD from the local Wal-Mart for a hefty sum. I was a little nervous, as I always am when I purchase something without listening to it first, but figured what the hey, it's Wicked, it CAN'T be bad. I really just wanted an alternate take on some of my favorite songs, since I can't afford to go see the musical in person yet.

I was wrong. I was very, very wrong. I realized I wasn't going to be getting the same level of performance as in the OCR release. But, after reading the reviews when I got home, I opened it. I popped it into my CD player, and my ears were immediately assaulted by their Gahlinda's warbling. Yes, Gah-linda. No other name fits so well. It's plain the group assembled to sing was trying, in part, to emulate the original cast's performance, and sadly, they failed miserably. Gah-linda's voice was off pitch and screetchy, frequently. Thinking perhaps I was merely comparing her unfairly to other performers, I played it for a friend, who all but begged me to turn it off. It was plain to us both that she was trying to sing far above her natural range. The other cast members, save their Fiyero, were decent. Their Elphaba was amateur good, and their Nessarose was surprisingly talented for the few moments time she got.

On to the music itself.

I have a reasonably high quality speaker system, yet the background music sounded like a midi file someone had made of the real music. Like something out of an old 16 bit game, or perhaps a talented teen trying to coax music out of an old keyboard. Thinking perhaps it WAS the sound system, I tried it in another media player. Same sound. Realizing that perhaps the guide CD might have simplified music apart from the karaoke CD itself, I swiftly switched to CD2. But wait. There was no CD2, because I had recieved two copies of CD1.

This was the final insult, for me. I contacted Stage-Stars and asked for my money back, explaining the variety of reasons I thought I deserved it. The woman I spoke with was polite and understanding, and, after getting my address, overnighted me a new copy of the title, shrink wrapped. It went immediately back to the store, and I got my money back.

On another note, on hearing the samples given on various sites of the CD2 music, I must conclude that it is the same quality on both CDs. In all honesty, you'd have more fun just setting the money on fire. Don't waste it on this purchase.

1 out of 5 stars I could play it better myself on a kazoo.......2006-12-13

I bought this karaoke cd because I was told it was the only one available for the musical and even though I had heard it was bad I figured it couldn't be all THAT bad. I was wrong. It's so bad that it hurts the ears of anyone with an ear for music and can throw off even the best trained singer - even when watching the cd+g graphics. I don't know what solution to offer instead since it's the only karaoke track that I know of... but you may be better off just going without.

5 out of 5 stars Wise words and cool tunes.......2007-03-28

I guess the most obvious way to differentiate Harry Manx from his peers is his use of Indian instruments, and in paricular the Mohan Veena. Well, actually what's unique and very refreshing is the way he integrates those sounds into a fusion of Blues and Americana that remind me of some of the other artists I love, but also stands out from them.
For all the exoticism of the instrumentation, Harry's songs are actually pretty accessible, and like the best songs are a bit mysterious in their actual meaning but give you a feeling that he's really saying something. Don't Take His Name Away is a terrific song about life and death and memory. I wonder who it's about.
Another standout song is A Single Spark, which has the trademark Indian sound mixed with an emotive blues sound and an intriguing, memorable lyric.
There's not a bad song on the album, though It Takes a Tear, a duet with a singer who's not really interesting enough, comes closest to being one you might want to skip past.
I like the production, even though it sounds at times almost too clean and bright for Blues. The production favours the sound of the Indian instruments, and the couple of instrumentals using those instruments sound fantastic.
On the whole, one of the best albums I've heard for some time. I can see I'll be enjoying this one for years to come.

5 out of 5 stars Love it and Love Harry Manx.......2007-01-10

I love this CD, I love Harry Manx, he is so blusey and his voice and music is undescrible, I recommend this CD for every blues lover and sitar music lover. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars exotic, yet strangely timeless.......2006-05-17

While most musicians are content to work within the accepted boundaries of their chosen style, lap-slide guitarist Harry Manx likes to color way outside the lines. His crayons? Soulful, raspy vocals, poetic lyrics, and the whining drones and mysterious melisma of Indian music. In addition to picking Hawaiian-style flat-top à la David Lindley, Ben Harper, or Kelly Joe Phelps, Manx plays the mohan veena-a 20-string archtop developed by Indian slide wizard Vishwa Mohan Bhatt. East/West fusions can sometimes sound forced or awkward, but Manx-who studied with Bhatt for five years-dodges that bullet. On Mantras for Madmen, mandolin, banjo, harmonica, tamboura, tabla, and haunting female voices swirl seamlessly around intricate slide melodies, creating an exotic, yet strangely timeless sound. Drawing from blues, ragas, and the story-telling heritage of British Isles folk music, Manx conjures songs that are as bewitching as they are unique.

5 out of 5 stars another level for Harry.......2006-01-20

I've been listening to Manx' blues ever since I caught him in concert here in New Mexico. "Road Ragas" being my favorite until this new release which really showcases his talent at writing songs, let alone the unique Indian instrument (I would write the name but would slaughter the spelling-a sitar/guitar cross)he plays them to. Don't let Mantra in the title sway you into thinking this is true sanskrit mantra (which I also listen to) but I think it is his way of honoring his unique East/West style and he does have a terrific sense of humor which also prevails in his songs. Good go Harry-come back to New Mexico soon!

4 out of 5 stars Power Metal and the Vocals of a King.......2007-03-08

Avian features the vocals of Lance King, one of the premier power metal vocalists of our time. I first became aware of the vocals of this King in his band Pyramaze--or was it in one of his other bands, namely Shining Star? No matter: all three of these are fantastic metal bands. Avian may be the heaviest of the three, however--Pyramaze would then be a close second--and the Avian debut album, "From the Depths of Time," is too good to be a debut, but a veteran vocalist in King and a veteran bass guitarist formerly of Megadeth help account for the superb quality of this release. As a guy who loves the sound of Primal Fear, Judas Priest and HammerFall, I say that Avian holds their own. Buy this CD and enjoy--and not just the music itself but also the positive lyrical content, a true rarity in the world of power metal.

5 out of 5 stars Avian rocks!.......2007-01-22

Guitarist Yan Leviathan has written a very impressive melodic power metal album. Vocalist Lance King delivers another outstanding performance here. The album also features David Ellefson (ex-Megadeth) and Jonah Weingarten (Pyramaze). I like this band enough that I flew from New Jersey to Minnesota twice in one year just to see them play. Some of my favorite tracks are "As the World Burns," "Single Blade of Vengeance," "Blinding Force," and "Queen of the Insane." Avian is a band well worth checking out!

5 out of 5 stars Avian - From the Depths of Time.......2006-03-17

First off, I want to express how much I love the artwork of Avian's debut CD entitled, From the Depths of Time! It truly is some of the coolest I've seen since Iron Maiden's, Seventh Son of a Seventh Son!

Secondly, the music is as great as the front artwork! 2005 proved how how of a worker and capable that Lance King really is. He owns Nightmare Records and distribution, as well as singing lead in several differnt progressive/power metal bands located throughout the world! If that's not good enough, he still takes the time to communicate regularly and shows appreciation toward his fans!

One of his latest projects, Avian, proves that the hard work doesn't stop now! From the Depths of Time offers up melodies, fantastic guitar playing, excellent lead vocals, and even a veteran superstar playing bass guitar, Dave Effelson, ex-Megadeth! From the Depths of Time has creative production values as well, giving the album a raw, spacey sound. The entire package from the artwork, musicianship, and production makes for what is predicted to be one of the strongest progressive/power metal release of this year!

If you enjoy bands such as: Balance of Power, Pyramaze, TNT, and Dream Theater, you're sure to enjoy Avian's, From the Depths of Time.

5 out of 5 stars This on my TOP 10 for 2005.......2006-02-09

OH MAN!!!!!! There is really no way to describe this CD. When i first heard that LANCE KING was doing the vocals i had to have it. ONCE i got it I couldn't stop playing it. This is one heck of a cd, Power, Progressive Old School my type of music. The vocals of LANCE KING once again prove to the metal worl he is the best metal singer out there. He sing with passion, and from his heart, he puts every ounce of his being into every song. LANCE YOU RULE my friend. Dave Elfeson from MEGADEATH plays bass and drives the rythm section of this band. Then there is YAN, YAN my friend YOU RULE. And newcomer Jonah Weintgarden on keyboards, he is also the keyboardist for PYRAMAZE and LILITU, and he is awesome. Is this a CD i recommend? YOU BET IT IS. Go out and buy it today and you won't be disappointed. IT IS AWESOME. Also check out PYRAMAZE and ASCENSION THEORY, MANTICORA, SHINING STAR, and WARMACHINE.

5 out of 5 stars Very Impressive.......2006-01-27

This is truly an amazing CD. The track As the World Burns is a must listen and a great song to kick off this solid album. The solo work on Black Masaquerade is air guitar worthy. City of Peace and Time is All We Need really showcase the brilliant song writing of Yan Leviathan. This is an album that will be timeless and is one the best debut efforts I have ever heard. I look forward to enjoying future projects from this band and seeing them on tour (must come to Phoenix!). Keep up the great work!

Out of California comes a band Called Hypnogaja. Out Burn Magazine calls them "Entralling, first rate modern rock." & The Denver Post says "Pushes Boundries" also MTV has Picked Up their Video called "They Don't Care".

Below Sunset" is a great album for many reasons. It takes the listener on a journey - a trip that transcends the boundaries of the rock genre without alienating anyone seeking music that has appeal. The melodies, lyrics and performances all work together to create a tapestry that is consistently satisfying throughout all of the songs.

Hypnogaja is able to connect with the listener on a level that is far beyond that which many bands are ever able to achieve, without the air of pretentiousness that usually surrounds such high brow artistry. Thus, "Below Sunset" works on a plane that is both larger than life while still capturing an incredible sense of intimacy.

Rockers like "They Don't Care," "Misery," "Normal On The Outside," "Scorned" and "Put Your Hate On Me" all have an epic quality that urgently encompasses aggression, passion and frailty. Textured compostions such as "Looking Glass" and "Silver Star" showcase ShyBoy's sterling vocal abilities. And in softer moments such as the beautifully arranged "Wash It All Away," and the stunning piano ballad "Quiet," one is shown the true breadth of Hypnogaja's abilities. A highly recommended listening experience.

This album is amazing. I haven't stopped listening to it since I bought it. There are so many songs that I absolutely love, that speak to my soul. The vocals are breathtaking, so full of power, emotion and different colors. The fluid, theatric quality of the arrangements really supports the intelligent lyrics. Aggressive. Melodic. Dramatic. Moody. Breathtaking.

      Album Description

The "Code of the Goddess" is an inspired musical exploration of the story from the best-selling novel, "The Da Vinci Code," by Dan Brown, featuring favorite works and new material from Laura Powers, creator of the Legends of the Goddess CD trilogy. A rich tapestry of elegantly layered arrangements interweaves beautiful melodies and mystical lyrics, creating songs that seem to spring from the souls of the characters we've come to know from the novel. This collection offers a perfect introduction to Laura's Celtic-infused music. It has become the soundtrack to my days, a musical companion on my own life journey. Celebrating feminine power and the beauty of the goddess tradition, Laura's earth-and-fire vocals blend with ethereal instrumentation, creating sensuous dreamscapes that transport you to another time, another place. I highly recommend it.

      5 out of 5 stars Beautiful & uplifting..........2006-03-20

"Code of the Goddess" takes the characters of the "Da Vinci Code" by Dan Brown and breathes musical life into them. After enjoying the book so much the songs in this CD bring another element to the people and storyline of the book. No vague instrumentals and noodling here--These are songs that stand up on their own and to repeated listening. Opus Dei, The Mystic and the Muse, and the lovely "Heart in Winter" (Sophie's song is in both French and English--I recognize Pachabel's Canon in the song) are standouts. If there is no audio here I found sound clips on the artist's website. Well done--packaging is nice, too.

      5 out of 5 stars Inspiring!.......2005-03-11

I absolutely LOVE this CD. There isn't a single track that I don't love listening to ... at home, while working, in the car ... it's just one of those collections.

      5 out of 5 stars Very effective........2006-12-28

This is the best of the type I've tried so far. Not only does the sound make one relax, it does help reduce the feeling of pain. I frequently have pain in my joints and long bones--from years of lifting and turning patients--and look for alternatives to pain medication for relief. Meditation has been very helpful, and this CD has really had a phenomenal effect. Even my Great Danes when aggitated and rambunctious can be calmed by playing this CD.

LEGEND - “Anthology” 2-CD (MCD021) Finally! A double compact disc collection from LEGEND (of Jersey, UK Channel Islands), one of the most highly regarded New Wave of British Heavy Metal bands ever. This monumental release features all three of the group's early 80's vinyl releases (”Legend,” “Death in the Nursery,” and “Frontline”), as well as unreleased demos, all completely digitally re-mastered onto 2 compact discs that easily destroy the notorious original vinyl pressings! A must have item for any fan of early 80's metal, the N.W.O.B.H.M. or just great heavy guitar music! Supreme axe-wielder Peter Haworth will carve his name into your skull with his unique and powerful fretwork! One of the most important re-releases of the year!!! Do not miss this!!

        Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars excellent guitar playing.......2006-04-06

Pretty average song writing here. Not fond of the singers voice.Excellent guitar playing.

I recommend Diamond Head for some old school NWOBHM. Metallica owes a great deal to Diamond Head.

        5 out of 5 stars a legend indeed............2005-05-06

Legend had drifted into total obscurity, but now thanks to this very well-done 2 disc anthology those that missed this the first time around(which would include about everybody)can enjoy/experience this original band.
and thats the key word here - ORIGINAL
i wont claim that every track on here is perfection, that they where the greatest thing since sliced bread, etc, etc.
if you rank yourself as any sort of New Wave of British Heavy Metal fan(or really curious about that epoch)this set should either bring back happy memories or amaze you with a band that clearly had its own style

5 out of 5 stars Wangy-Bar playing at its finest........2005-04-06

If you are into a mixture of Sabbath grunge, mixed with guitar virtuso, which is influenced by a mixture of Roth, early Van Halen and Kim Mitchell then you should get this album. Some silly reviewer claims that Legend weren't original. But I have never heard a guitar player that can get us much out of the wangy-bar as this guy and it's these old-school guitar players that show how an electric guitar should be played. Not every track on this album is great. But a lot of this material is over 20 years old. But its great to see this band has released all their earlier compositions on disc and is even greater to see that they are still writing material. 5 stars, just for the cat screaming guitaring definately.

5 out of 5 stars Re: last reviewer - what have we ever had from Oz then ???.......2005-01-19

Skippy, Rolf Harris, Kylie & crap lager.

Legend is one of the best bands from the NWOBHM genre. I wouldn't recommend that anybody wrote reviews if they know nothing about the movement.

        1 out of 5 stars NWOBHM?.......2004-12-30

NWOBHM? You have to be kidding! These guys aren't sure who they are ... King Crimson, Robin Trower, The Moody Blues, May Blitz, Hawkwind - you've heard it all before only MUCH BETTER, and heavy metal they sure as hell will never be!!! There's some OK stuff here, but it won't clog your CD player. The muso's show some occassional promise, but the vocalist is enough to make you shudder - this guy has as much of a heavy metal vocal style as Shania Twain and he grates even more than she does - to get through one CD without throwing up is a miracle. If you're looking for British metal, strick to Sabbath, Priest, Maiden, Purple, Budgie and don't waste your money or time with this crap ... it's pretty easy to see why they never made it!
