Customer Reviews:
Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30
Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.
Top Shelf.......2007-01-04
This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.
TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23
THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.
Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14
This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway
Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17
If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

A classic that gets better with age.......2006-12-18
This is a very fine concert that has been around in bootleg circles for years. According to the liner notes there might have been another song for this show but it's missing from all of the band's master tapes. There are also a couple of techincal problems-1)David Cross' mellotron breaks down during The Night Watch 2)The end of Improv:Starless and Bible Black is missing due to the reel running out 3)part of these performances were edited, overdubbed and used during the making of the album Starless and appearently when this was put together the had to use some of the misc overdubs because the original parts were erased.
As far as the release itself, it is a must have. The songs on here are done in a fine fashion and most of the tech issues have been handled so well that you won't even notice them. Easy Money starts off rocking so hard that you'll be on your knees begging for mercy. Lament, Book Of Saturday and Fracture are all great versions and will put a great big smile on your face. The Night Watch features David's mellotron going down so he quickly moves to electric piano. The Starless improv is great. Improv:Trios is one of the most wonderful and pretty songs they've ever come up with. The same can be said for Exiles. Improv:The Fright Watch is again interesting. The Talking Drum and Larks, Tongues In Aspic(Part Two) rock as hard as the opening Easy Money. The Schizoid Man also rocks and showing off how great this band can handle an older favorite. If you like King Crimson, get this.
i love KC, but but but..........2005-11-09
Starless And Bible Black has always been one of the KC albums I appreciated the least (not sure why), so that would explain why I don't like this as much as many others (a great deal of the 2-disc set is from that album). But get it if you dig KC, particularly this era. Good stuff, just not as good as B'Boom or Thrakattak (heh)
Live albums don't get any better than this.......2005-01-17
I'm a huge Prog fan and a huge King Crimson fan, and this was my favorite lineup of my favorite Prog band, recorded live at the peak of their powers, complete with some facinating and revelatory liner notes. Ain't no way you're going to find me saying one bad thing about this fantastic 2-CD document of the band's November 3rd, 1973 concert in Amsterdam.
This is the show that served as the basis for the Starless & Bible Black album, without overdubs and with crowd noise. Even with technical malfunctions, this is one of the best live albums I've ever heard. You think the mighty Crim was going to let a little mellotron meltdown dilute their power? Think again.
Buy this CD. Cue up "The Talking Drum" and let the CD play through to the end. Now scrape yourself up off the floor and put on the best-ever version of "Exiles." Then listen to the whole thing. Marvel at the way KC could go from the raw power of "Fracture" to the delicate and beautiful "Trio." Thrill to the brilliant interplay of 4 insanely talented musicians with a taste for daring improvisation. Shake your head in disbelief at how astoundingly good KC was during this period.
Essential, powerful, gutsy and timeless are just four of the words that come to mind when I think of The Nightwatch. Here's two more: Highly Recommended.
Legendary band, legendary concert.......2005-01-08
Robert Fripp has turned the King Crimson archives into a cottage industry, releasing countless live recordings through his label, Discipline Global Mobile, and the "King Crimson Collector's Club." At this point, live King Crimson albums outnumber their studio recordings. You really need a scorecard to keep track of live Crimson.
"The Night Watch" is among the best: a double live CD recorded at Amsterdam's Royal Concertgebouw in November 1973. This features arguably Crimson's (and progressive rock's) greatest lineup ever: Fripp on guitar, John Wetton on bass and vocals, Bill Bruford on drums & percussion, and violinist David Cross. The concert is noteworthy for producing about half of the "Starless and Bible Black" sessions, which were recorded live and later polished for inclusion on that record. (If you already own "Starless and Bible Black," don't hesitate to pick this up as well.)
The live set covers an admittedly narrow portion of Crimson's career; 10 of the 12 tracks appear on either "Larks' Tongues in Aspic" (1973) or "Starless and Bible Black" (1974), with the unreleased improvisation "The Fright Watch" and a relatively rote version of "21st Century Schizoid Man" thrown in. What the disc lacks in diversity, it makes up for in intensity and live energy. "Easy Money" and "Lament" rock harder and faster than their studio versions. The live setting magnifies the epic grandeur of "Exiles." And the hypnotic, dynamic rendition of the "Talking Drum/Larks' Tongues in Aspic, Part II" medley achieves new levels of aural euphoria.
King Crimson always excelled in the studio, but they really come into their own on stage. "The Night Watch" illustrates this as well as any other Crimson live album. If you aren't familiar with the mid-1970's incarnation of King Crimson, this is a great place to start. If you're already a diehard Crimson fan, this set will become an indispensable addition to your collection.
One of Rock's Finest Moments Caught on Tape.......2004-04-08
Fans of the legendary King Crimson should be thankful that co-founder and mainstay Robert Fripp has such an obsessive pattern of archiving the Crims' various live performances. This late 1973 gig at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam features the most hailed Crimson line-up of Fripp (guitars), John Wetton (bass/vocals), David Cross (violins, etc) and Bill Bruford (percussion), in a furry of musical bliss from the frightening to the beautiful, from the ominous textures to the shadowy lines, from the words of anger to the words of mourning.
"The Night Watch" is, simply put, one of the greatest rock concerts ever caught on tape. Today, live albums have become stop-gap releases more than ever, available mostly through TV offers, with a tacky keychain or poster thrown in. And unfortunately, since this performance was released over twenty years after it happened, it will probably only be seen by many as a nostalgia release. But we know better.
King Crimson blew fans away with their studio albums, but as a live entity they were an unmovable mountain. Despite all its mind-boggling complexity (and Fripp's own criticism, evident in his extensive liner notes), this band invaded whatever venue they were scheduled and produced a sound that could fill a stadium yet still possess enough grace to fit in a concert hall. Selections such as 'Easy Money,' 'Lament,' and '21st Century Schizoid Man,' would have made a stadium audience stamp their feet and hold lighters high in the air, while 'The Night Watch,' 'Trio,' and 'Fracture' mesmerized those in the more intimate venues.
If you only buy one live album by King Crimson (there are many), "The Night Watch" is perfect. Around 26 minutes of these exact recordings were supposedly used for the "Starless and Bible Black" album (after overdubbs and studio polishing), but nonetheless, "The Night Watch" is a moving piece of history from these musical heroes.

AMERICAN SONG RECITAL.......2000-02-17
AMERICAN SONG RECITAL
Channel Classics Records has taken a first-rate initiative in giving winners of important international music competitions the opportunity to record a CD in the "Winning Artists Series." This CD, with fairly unknown American songs, is part of the above series. Other than a piece by Hundley, the remaining 22 songs are based on texts by American writers.
Richard Hundley's songs are beautiful and his compositions true to the texts on which they are based. All the emotions found in the texts are expanded in the compositions to ensure that the story comes through clearly and is not lost in the music. Lori Laitman was specifically asked by Lauren Wagner to compose a song. She chose a text by Sara Teasdale and the CD is worth owning for this song alone: magnificent! Another "plus" to this production is that the source and full text of the songs are in the CD book.
In addition to songs, a number of piano solos have been recorded. Those of Leonard Bernstein are not very well known, but very much worth listening to. He composed these works for friends, relatives and colleagues. They are concise, very complete compositions.
The fact that Lauren Wagner won four important prizes in 1991 is also not surprising. This singer possesses incredible timbre, has a beautiful, controlled voice and sings with incredible ease. Her music is truly a pleasure to hear. Her accompanist Fred Weldy matches her level of skill easily. This CD is definitely a worthwhile addition to your collection.
Translated from the Dutch review in Phonogram Magazine, 1994.

Customer Reviews:
Worthy reconstruction of Renaissance Courtly Dance Music.......2005-12-02
The text of `The Masque of Oberon' is credited to the great Elizabethan dramatist, Ben Jonson with music written by many Renaissance composers, including the namesake of the great blues performer, Robert Johnson.
On the one hand, this recording is not of a single work, but rather of a reconstruction of a work from a great many different pieces. There was a genuine `masque' with this title written by Ben Jonson, but almost everything but the bare bones text has been lost.
To understand how much was lost, you must know that a Renaissance `masque' was a series of courtly dances. The most famous story about masques, of course, is Edgar Allen Poe's `Masque of the Red Death' which was not at all about a masked ball. As the notes to this recording explain, a masque was so highly scripted and choreographed as to be virtually a play in itself, with the parts being played by the members of the court and the artistic professionals it employed such as musicians and dancing masters.
In spite of the patchwork nature of the piece, it is really much more of a whole than the other recording I know of done by Musicians of the Globe, lead by Philip Pickett. This `Shakespeare's Musick' recording, also on Phillips, is much more obviously a collection of snippits with a lot of historical reconstruction done to make it a playable piece.
Thus, if you are really interested in Renaissance dramatic music, this is a more enjoyable introduction than any collection of Shakespeare's incidental music I have heard.

Fire from Lindholm.......2001-11-17
This set contains four records with two abridged live performances. I have as yet only listened to the performance from 1974. This is one of the first pirated records to appear with the Swedish dramatic soprano Berit Lindholm. Let us hope that recordings from the Ring conducted by Sir Colin Davis at Covent Garden will appear soon! Meanwhile this Tristan from Amsterdam 1974 fills the gap with a truly amazing dramatic force. You can feel the amazement and tension among the public, crying out their "bravos" at the end. This is Lindholm's evening and a great one ideed. Totally involved in her part she becomes Isolde and everything catch fire... No Wagnerian or other opera lover can be without these records. The first two CD's concentrates on the part of Isolde (1974).The performance from 1979 (not with Lindholm)concentrates on the tenor, Spas Wenkoff - more comments will follow when I have listened to that. For the moment, the 5 stars are for the 1974 recording.
