"WHALES AND NIGHTINGALES": JUDY COLLINS' MUSICAL PANORAMA.......2007-01-25
Although somewhat musically related to "Wildflowers" in it's orchestral stylings, Judy Collins' "Whales And Nightingales" has a slighter folk-rock tinge to it and is a more scenic, if you will, view of the world - encapsulating political, social, spiritual, ecological, and romantic concerns into its captivating musical panorama.
"Whales And Nightingales" opens with her compeer Joan Baez's "Song For David", her then-husband who was arrested and jailed for resisting the draft into Vietnam while she waited with their new-born son for his release. It is a powerful song; its power belied by its beauty, as it actually sounds apolitical. It is followed by Jacque Brel's "Sons Of", a solo-piano accompanied lullaby, of sorts, reminding us of the diversity of human life and how all, created equal, can come to so many different paths in life. On this album, Judy has also included Brel's wonderful "Marieke", sung in French and Flemish.
Dylan's "Time Passes Slowly" is one of my favorite tracks here and is a lush, folk-rocking love song; Judy's voice soars on this number, once again showing how well she interprets Dylan. She also does a spectacular job of Pete Seeger's "Oh, Had I A Golden Thread".
Collins, herself, composed for this album: her contributions being "Nightingale I", a romantic song in which she is the nightingale hunted but not struck by the arrow aimed at her by her potential suitor. She accompanies herself on piano, once again showing her classically trained musicianship, which fully blossums on the following "Nightingale II", an ambitious, completely orchestrated classical sounding instrumental piece.
"Whales And Nightingales" also includes traditional songs, supremely arranged and adapted by Collins: "Prothalamium", a song of rejuvination; "Farewell To Tarwathie", a centuries-old Scottish whaling song performed over a backdrop of the songs humpback whales sing to each other, reminding us of the beauty of the natural world and, conversely, how it is NOT to be squandered and depleted; and the closing spiritual cuts "Simple Gifts", about the simple recognition of the essence of being and the gratitude for life; and her colossal hit, "Amazing Grace".
Judy Collins' "Whales And Nightingales" covers a broad spectrum of the issues of life and living. When time is spent with it, lights shine, revealing its messages of hope and faith and peace and love.
Collins' highest achievement.......2006-12-20
Decades of indifferent pop craft and a pandering sentimentality have led many to forget that, during the Sixties, Judy Collins was a major player. This 1970 album was eagerly anticipated across American campuses and easily met everyone's high expectations. If Collins could be compared to Paul Simon (another intelligent and tasteful perfectionist), Whales & Nightingales straddles a halfway mark between the eccentrities of Bookends and the sensuality of Bridge Over Troubled Water. Big statements ("Amazing Grace" and "Golden Thread" ) are tempered by quick-witted vignettes ("Sons Of" and "Prothalamium") and, displaying her keen ear for musicianship, delivers the quintessential version of Joan Baez's intensely personal "Song For David." "Farewell To Tarwathie," the 'whale duet,' is the centerpiece and stands as the 'first New Age' recording. Better yet are the two versions of the brooding "Nightingale" - a convincing argument for Collins' ability as a composer. A song cycle in the grand manner of 1970, the album is probably Collins' final masterpiece.
How Could This Ever Have Happened?.......2006-12-11
It's amazing to think that this varied, sublime work could have been produced, even in a time of music as consciously experimental as back then. Just consider the range of material:
- Amazing Grace: delightful, uninstrumented performance which foregrounds Collins' vocal range and depth. Deservedly classic.
- Farewell to Tarwathie: a whaler tune (!), with no instruments at all, framed by whale songs, performed in a stately, reflective manner. And the whales get the last word, too!
- Song for David: more what you might expect from Collins, from the rest of her work of this period. Very hummable, and upbeat.
- The Patriot Game: Mournful song of Irish political despair.
- Time Passes Slowly: Dylan, but with a delicacy of rustic emotion. One of favorite Dylan tunes, in fact, not least because someone else is singing it.
- Two-Part Nightingale: the first is lyrics-driven; the longer and pure instrumental bliss. Who had this idea?
And others; you get the idea. For sure, in other albums of her from this period you see similar variety, but this is, to my mind, the apex of this gloriously eclectic approach. Some genius of a producer (and perhaps Collins herself) must have combed through an unimaginable amount of material/suggestions to arrive at this stunningly varied, yet supremely evocative collection of songs. Who would ever have thought of a whaling song? How many pop divas would have selected an instrumental? It's a lasting index of Judy Collins' confidence and creativity.
I like many of her other releases, but find myself coming back to this again and again.
This is my favorite album.......2004-09-14
When Whales and Nightingales first came out I was thirteen years old. I fell in love with it then, and continue to love it now. This says a lot for its staying power, since I am a very different person now than I was then, and my musical tastes have changed drastically! Judy Collins' voice is haunting and lovely, and each song is perfect in its own way. Farewell To Tarwaithe, Simple Gifts, and Amazing Grace are my favorites, but there's not a bad song in the bunch. This is a great sing-along album for wanna-be sopranos, or you can listen and marvel at the crystal clarity of her voice. I wish she was doing albums like this now!
Judy Collins sing "Amazing Grace" (and with whales).......2003-04-03
When you listen to "Whales & Nightingales" the big question is which song do you find more haunting, her crystal clear version of "Amazing Grace" or "Farewell to Tarwathie," which is sung over the accompaniment of Humpback Whales. This 1971 album made it all the way to #17 on the pop charts, which makes it her second most successful album after her 1968 "Wildflowers" album. The glorious soprano voice is always there and the quality of a Judy Collins album always comes down to the songs. This time around we have Bob Dylan's "Time Passes Slowly" and songs by Jacques Brel ("Marieke") and Pete Seeger ("Oh Had I a Golden Thread"), as well a nice little original composition ("Sons of"). Consequently, while you can get the two "hits" from this album on her hits collection, there are several other songs well worth having in your music library, making "Whales & Nightingales" a Judy Collins album well worth having.

Great workout tunes.......2007-05-10
I have the LP and grew up on this in college. I also found this to be a great workout set ! Fast moving up until the near the end. Manfred Mann did the best job on his version of "Spirits in the Night" IMHO. Definately a must have for 70s collections.
Spirits In The Night.......2007-03-31
Bruce did a great job on this song, But Manfred Mann took it to another level. The same level as B.B.T.L.
manfred mann at his best!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-03-27
this was the prelude to the blockbuster "the roaring silence"
which I feel was the breakthru lp. The line-up was the same
on both. Both hit singles are spingsteen covers and better
than bruce could have hoped for. My favorite cut is the 3rd
cut "quittin' time". The haunting guitar solo is one of my
all time favorites. These guys can really jam. I have always
liked Manfred Mann but this was there best.
mann am i glad i rediscovered this album........2005-11-08
i was recently going thru my old cassettes and found this album. i played it and WOW! the 70's came back with a bang.
on my 7.1 surround this album totally blew me away. buy it b4 it's gone.
this album defines space rock.......2005-06-25
this is easily one of the top (prog) rock albums i've listened to (though it took some time for it to grow on me) and easily rivals the roaring silence as mann's best work. throughout the album the format of song followed by instrumental is maintained, which only reflects the instrumental capabilities of the band members (mick rogers is easily one of the most underrated guitar players in rock music). the album opens with a bang with springsteen's spirits in the night and what a cover it is! mann apparently is at his best when re-interpreting the songs of others, for the other highlight of the album is the cover of joan armatrading's visionary mountains where mick rogers unleashes one of the most expressive guitar solos i've ever heard. the instrumentals are not fillers but well composed/performed pieces of music which fits perfectly with the mood of the album. the mood and the atmosphere of this album defines space rock!

Another Time and Place.......2007-01-11
Listening to the Sensational Nightingales was like taking a trip back to a time when this great group was on perpetual tour and we were buying their wax records and spinning the grooves off them! This was a time when we felt that the vocalists were products of a spiritual commitment, and their songs, though entertaining were reverent! If you want to experience a spiritual uplifting, this is a record that can take you there. I am glad to have found this CD at Amazon.
Indispensable music with one track missing.......2006-10-03
I bought this album on vinyl back in the fifties and I still love this music. The group lives up to its name, and the lead singer is truly extraordinary. On this cd reissue, however, the original, up-tempo "To the End", has been replaced by a completely different slow tune. Admirers of this wonderful music owe it to themselves to hunt this title down online and marvel at the powerful rhythmn, the complex hand-clapping, and the inspired shouting. You won't hear anything else like it. I would buy the cd again just to get this track.
Sensational is Right.......2006-07-17
Rev. Julius Cheeks gets excited about his love for Jesus and proclaims to the mountaintops on this great (and super inexpensive) group of songs. His background singers are very sedate, but he rocks, creating a tension of opposites that is very moving. He is one of the pioneers of the hard-gospel style, along with Rev. Ruben Wilingham (Swanee Quintet), Silas Steele (Spirit of Memphis), Leroy Barnes (Detoiters) and if you know & love these groups, you are gonna love this CD.
If you like soulful singing, get this CD!.......2002-04-20
Rev. Julius Cheeks makes every one of these gospel songs and hymns a new creation with his wailing and soulful singing. The background singers punctuate and accentuate the funky rhythms. If you like old time hard gospel quartets, you'll LOVE this. It's one of my favorite CDs.
sensational.......2002-03-19
This disc contains some of the scariest cheesegrater-throated screaming you will hear this side of Napalm Death, courtesy of the great Rev. Julius Cheeks. This is set alongside some contrastingly laidback gospel grooves that chug along, leaving room for lycanthropic interjections like "one for the father, one for the son, one more time for the holy ghost". There are some catchy toons too, like "The Storm is Passing" and "Standing in the Judgement", that you won't be able to get out of your head, but the main attraction is Cheeks' microphone-shattering howling on tracks like "Burying Ground" and "A Closer Walk with Thee". Not too pricey either - just shove it in your trolley now and get some hard religion into ya.

Good "Down Home" flavor.......2004-07-03
I've known & played these songs for more than 20 years, some without ever hearing the original, picking them up from other musicians I ran across. Others I learned from scratchy old LPs. The rythms are good, foot tapping stuff, sort of what we call "down home" and the words are usually Bible stories set to music - a good way to get Bible truths into folks who maybe don't read well, or who aren't familiar with them. Some of the songs are very similar to each other, and you may not want to sit down and listen to the entire collection in one sitting, but they are a good resource for this style of harmony, and I'm using it to teach my 18 yr old daughter some of the "homestyle" chords on guitar and rythm patterns.
By the way, for the reviewer who wasn't sure if the 'Gales were Christian because he or she could not understand one of the words in "It's Going to Rain," it's "It won't be water, but fire the next time."
Just a "TASTE and your HOOKED" gospel folks!.......2003-06-07
This one makes ya feel good, like a baby being rocked in the "Cradle of God"! And not just sweet&swinging rhythm's, but wonderful quartet, singing lyrics to learn, or confirm your faith by. I mean you will actually hear "Scripture in Song" in a way only these guy's deliver. TRULY-A-JOY!!! and (Scotty G. know good music)!
Words To "It's Gonna Rain"...........2001-08-29
...We used to sing that song and other songs by the 'Gales, and we played their records all of the time. From what I've listened to on this CD, the songs are done very well, but I rated it only 3 stars because these are not the original versions(especially "It's Gonna Rain" and "At The Meeting"). It would be worth your while to find the original versions.

I want to know if there is a web site that I can get into to find the lyrics to the song Its gonna rain. Can you please send me the website so I can go into it and read the words. Thank you.

Fun, but ultimately passable.......2002-05-23
Deciding to do a covers of 60's songs to "let their hair down" before their MCA years. The Damned did a album of covers and this is it. Anyone expecting another "Under The Floor" again will be surely disapointed. Its fun, the first track is very good, but ultimately passable aka: more for fans of the group.
Naz Nomad, Baby...Yeah.......2002-02-28
I have to wonder if Mike Myers has a copy of this 1985 album. More than a decade before Austin Powers lampooned London in the 60's there was Naz Nomad and the Nightmares with their wonderful "Music from 'Give Daddy the Knife Cindy', a Psychedelic spoof/tribute (it really IS a very fine line...)from members of The Damned. Their comical take on the psychedelic/garage sound of bands like The Seeds and The Electric Prunes is bang on. The album is one fantastic and trippy tounge-in-cheek celebration of 60's psychedelia. This album is no Spinal Tap joke, but a humorous hommage to bands like the Chocolate Watchband, Strawberry Alarm Clock and Electric Prunes. The fuzztone guitars, cheesy Farfisa Organ, trippy vocals...it's all here. You could almost believe it really is a long lost psychedelic movie soundtrack. It's difficult to remember not to take it all too seriously...this is such great music. Naz and The Damned were out to have some fun and pay tribute to the late 60's fuzz bands and the result is wonderful, catchy, funny and an absolute blast. Psyche OUT, Baby! All this more than 10 years before Austin Powers. Now THAT is just Too Groovy Baby...Yeah!
Dross From The Paisley Strawberry!.......2001-06-01
If you saw the film "Give Daddy The Knife,Cindy",then you know exactly what this soundtrack is all about! If you didn't....you can still enjoy the experience, through the musical essences provided by Naz Nomad and The Nightmares.( Not to be confused with several other people named "Naz Nomad" or "The Nightmares").It's truely amazing how long this soundtrack took to get released. (Perhaps it's the similarity in sound to Sky Saxon and The Seeds? ).Full of brilliant cover versions, and a couple of originals, this album will transcend you through space and time! Naz Nomad's vocals are right up their with Jim Morrison by way of Bela Lugosi! Sphinx Svenson, the most sensible guitar player known to man, totally transgressess the milky way, with his precision string strumming! Buddy Lee Junior plays bass like John Merrick on acid! The ever lovely Ulla plays the farsifa like nobody else can, friends and Romans, listen way up! And do I smell a rat? No,it's just Nick Detroit slamming the skins, and backing the beat! To quote Eddy Taylor ( as "Cindy" )"Man,those giant spiders are laying paisley eggs in the amplifer of life! It's all one big freak out, baby!" And who are we to argue?
What a classic.......1999-06-20
What a classic man... Who else could do an album of this calibre apart from The Damned and friends. You'd have to be a pretty good Damned follower to pick up on the sound of the band and put two and two together and actually come up with Four. Top Stuff. Need more.

I really love the song, and the other track ("Leading Men") isn't half bad, either. However, I think that the single could have been really great had a remix or two of the song been on the CD. But, a worthwhile purchase nonetheless, and I highly recommend it to everyone interested in a great band. :)
Hooked me onto Wolfsheim.......2000-06-20
"Sparrows and the Nightingales" was the first Wolfsheim song I ever heard, and it took hold of me. This single contains 3 tracks: the regular version, radio edit, and "Leading Men". If you listen to the poetry which are the lyrics to "Sparrows and the Nightingales", you can see why this song is such a beautiful piece of work. The vocals draw you into a melodic state with the message of putting aside differences and fading off into the realms of the mind.
