This piano-playing team of five siblings could be easily dismissed as just another crossover ploy, but that would be a mistake. My initial surprise turned into an hour of pleasant listening and, on rehearings, to admiration for this unique ensemble of talented young artists. For one thing, they've got the chops to bring off some fiendishly difficult works. Listen to the way sisters Desirae and Deondra tackle modernist Witold Lutoslawski's Variations on a Theme of Paganini, or brother Ryan's colorful romp through Ginastera's tricky dance rhythms. The fivesome also achieve carefully balances in their concerted works, with a scrupulously turned version of Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue and their arrangement of highlights from Stravinsky's Firebird. Those in doubt should hear tracks two through four, for irresistible versions of Lecouna's popular Malaguena, a fetching combination of Dvorak and Copland, and a piano rag by John Novacek. A delightful, spirited disc that never fails to please. --Dan Davis

If Music Could Spin the World..........2006-12-05
...this CD would have our planet twirling voraciously. The Browns are back, and they're as stunning as ever. The brilliant fivesome (Desirae, Deondra, Gregory, Melody, and Ryan) simply shine in this recording. Their first recording was absoulutely breathtaking, but you could sense a cautious sort of "nervousness." The 5 Browns have overcome all caution, nervous or naught, and whiz confidently through dazzling solos, duets, and, of course, quintets. The highlights of this CD for me personally were 1) The 5 piano Rhapsody in Blue 2) Malaguena, performed by the lovely Brown brothers 3) Last but DEFINATELY not least, the 5 piano interpretation of Stravinsky's Firebird. Oh, I cannot convey to you the power and incandescent beauty of 'The Firebird,' especially on 5 pianos! 'The Firebird' alone makes this CD a winner. Other than that, frankly, I didn't get all excited about the other tracks. The Argentinian Dances are quite masterfully performed by Ryan, and I very much enjoyed Desirae and Deondra's (the inseparable duoists) 'Variations on a Theme of Paganini." This is not to be confused with the immensely popular 'Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini'(composed by the incomparable Rachmaninoff.) All in all, if you enjoy a twist (but a respectful twist) on the world's greatest music, you will enjoy the power that's contained in this little Dual Discer.
(As a closing note, the video side of the disc is very entertaining, including music videos of Rhap in Blue, Simple Gifts, and The Firebird. Of course they cut the clips a bit, and I won't say it isn't noticeable, but boy is it cool to see the 5 in action!)
An enjoyable CD.......2006-08-05
I would have to say that I was absolutely amazed with this CD. I'm usually not the type of person who would listen to classical music, but I thoroughly loved it. I love playing it in the car on the way to class; it gets me relaxed. Buy 'No Boundaries'!! You will not regret it!
no sophomore slump here.......2006-08-04
I had always been a little bored by music for 2 or more pianos, but this disc changed my mind -- very exciting!
I recently had the pleasure of meeting The 5 Browns - what a nice bunch. They are all very talented, but the sum is even better than the parts -- what playing & what great enthusiasm. They obviously have fun making music together and they have the chops to make it exciting for the listener. Especially fun are Rhapsody in Blue and the excerpts from the Firebird. The DVD video bits are a nice bonus.
I'm waiting impatiently for their next disc.
Different and inspiring!.......2006-06-22
Well, I must say that I enjoyed this second CD better than the first one. There was more variety and I loved the arrangements for 5 pianos! As a teen classical pianist, it is cool to see someone finally making classical music fun and interesting. They have re-inspired me and my love for classical music!
Dual Disc.......2006-06-21
I really enjoyed the DualDisc version. Being able to see the 5 Browns playing adds so much. This is a wonderful disk. A great gift to introduce younger and older audiences to classical music!

Album Description
No Boundaries showcases a different side of Eva, the work she did as a session vocalist. It includes songs written and produced by Tony Taylor and David Christopher as well as two stunning new takes on the classic "Natural Woman". These were some of the first songs Eva ever sang in a professional studio environment (her work before having been done on either home equipment or recorded live). For those who appreciate Eva's stunning vocal work, this is a CD not to be missed.
Album Description
HDCD pressing of 2000 album from the passionate Washington D.C. Singer who died of cancer in 1996 at the age of 33. 11 tracks. Renata.
Customer Reviews:
Not bad, not great.......2007-01-07
This album is not nearly as bad as some people here would have you think. It is at least as good as 95% of the popular 'Pop' albums out there. Seriously. But the trouble is that, when comparing it to Eva's AMAZING recordings on her other disks, it definitely comes off as second best.
Eva is at her best when she is sitting on a stool in some smokey bar, singing her heart out. The beauty of Eva Cassidy is her lyricism and her incredible 'from the soul' renditions of all of her music. In this album, those things are lost, since the producers (without the permission of her estate) took some of her vocal tracks, after her death, and buried them in instrumental and 'support' tracks, in arrangements that she never would have approved. The true Eva is here, somewhere, but she doesn't come all the way through. Even so, as I said, it is at least as good as most of the BEST Pop disks out there.
Don't shy away from getting this disk, if you like Eva, but don't expect magic from it. Just be thankful that she never went 'commercial,' because this disk is EXACTLY the type of pigeon-holed recording that the recored industry was trying to push her into.
American Tune.......2003-08-25
"American Tune" is superlative. Buy it! You won't regret your choice if you appreciate great musical creativity. "Drowning In A Sea Of Love" is Eva the 'rocker.' She never fails to give something new and creative. Eva is the best female vocalist of our time. Her appeal cuts across all age levels of admirers in many nations from Canada to Finland to Japan and even to the USA.Eva's music never grows old. Buy it and hear for yourself.
Do not bother with this one.......2003-05-12
Just to add to the many reviews already written...this is a "departure" from Eva's other CDs and it is a road not worth taking in this case. The songs are just bad, and the vocals, although very good, do not bring the feeling and intensity of her other CDs.
I just recently learned about Eva and am now an avid fan and was truly disappointed by this...but by no means think any differently about Eva - she clearly did not have her heart in this.
Unauthorized release of her music.......2002-08-29
I recently read that this album was released over "strenuous objections" from Eva Cassidy's family. As someone previously commented, she never would have released these cuts to the public. I suppose there is always a market for unauthorized biographies and disc's, but it seems a shame that listeners "blame" Eva for poor quality of an album she had nothing to do with.
VERY DISAPPOINTED.......2002-08-01
If this had been the first Eva Cassidy album I purchased, I would never have bought another and would have missed knowing one of the most marvelous voices in music. The songs here are awful, and the production is very artificial. This album is a disservice to Eva Cassidy. I listened twice and then threw it away. Fortunately, I can go back to other Eva Cassidy albums which I play over and over.

fun CD to listen to, puts you in a good mood.......2007-02-12
This is the best Natalie MacMaster CD I have. I own two other ones and this is my favorite. Track 8 is so cool. Since I play fiddle, I can play along with her. She has a music book out. It's a combination of her songs from three CDs.
I love listening to this CD around the house. Natalie is such a spunky player, how can you not feel happy when you hear her? I was at one of her performances and was taken by her playing. This is a fantastic CD!
Excellent Music.......2001-04-30
After downloaing the free mp3 files, I bought the CD. The music is beautiful; at times relaxing, at other times, inspiring. If you like Celtic music or just acoustic music in general give this artist a try.
Absolutely amazing...........2000-04-19
Six months ago, I had never heard of Natalie MacMaster, then quite by accident, hear (and saw) the video of "In My Hands" and have since become one of her biggest fans. "No Boundaries" is the title of this CD and it could not be better named. Ms. MacMaster's fiddle playing stretches beyond the limits of "traditional" Celtic music and blends other musical disciplines into music that truly knows no boundaries...Neither is Ms. Macmaster one to hog the spotlight, even on her own CD...Bruce Guthro's beautiful song "Fiddle and Bow",which he sings, highlighted by Natalie's fiddle playing is one of the CD's high spots and don't miss Cookie Rankins vocal on "Drunken Piper" If you are a MacMaster fan,or merely someone who likes a talented musician showing the world "how its done"....don't miss this CD
Wonderful Celtic Fiddle.......1999-08-03
I have seen Natalie MacMaster perform twice, once with a "Masters of the Folk Violin" tour and recently at the Britt Festival in Jacksonville, Oregon with Mary Black. MacMaster is electrifying on stage and in her recordings. "No Boundaries" features MacMaster's fiddle brilliance accompanied by a traditional band (guitar, drums, keyboard), which results in a wonderful sound. MacMaster's latest, "My Roots Are Showing," won Canada's Juneau Award (equivalent to USA's Grammy Award), but is not currently available for sale in the US. This album is absolutely wonderful, it ends much too soon.
A fine blend of traditional and contemporary fiddling.......1998-12-08
Natalie McMasters is one of the hottest fiddlle players I've ever heard. Her CD reflects her grasp of traditional Cape Breton fiddling and stretches it's limits all the way to swing and beyond.A delicate touch and lightning fast...this album will take you for a wild ride and possibly be the best music you've purchased in a long time. My choice for traditional Album of the Year!

The 5 Browns & No Boundaries.......2007-01-15
Both CD's are very good. Great talent! Looking forward to the next CD.
A bit dissapointing.......2007-01-14
I guess I was expecting more of a Ferrante and Teicher thing with more than one piano going at a time ... could be that it is but, if so, am missing depth ... great family but disappointing album
Plenty of speed, but little passion.......2007-01-12
The essential problem with the 5 Browns is that no one (including the Browns) seems to understand who they really are. Are they serious classical musicians? Or are they just bouncy high-energy classical missionaries preaching to the un-converted who may not know Ravel from rap, but can be impressed by anyone who can play their instrument really really fast?
Because that's what the Browns excel at--playing really fast. Subtlety and nuance just aren't what these siblings are all about.
But maybe it's not them--maybe it's the Sony Records marketing geniuses who are telling them to lay off Clair de Lune. Look at the packaging. The photos and liner notes tell the story--these aren't your parents' classical musicians. The photos show laughing kids jumping in unison. The liner notes don't talk about the music, but about things like energy and joy and that it's okay to like classical music.
As serious classical musicians the Browns are undoubtedly technically gifted, but lack the lyrical and emotional depth of true artists. Far too often they mistake speed and rhythm for nuance and feeling. Their sheltered life at Julliard may have something to do with it--but whatever the reason, in the entire hour of music there's very little here that is moving. I'm inclined to want to check back with them in a decade or so after they've been knocked around by life a little and see how they play then.
This album is more even than their first, but doesn't reach the highs of either "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" or "Scenes from West Side Story" from their first album. Their arrangements are less intriguing, and the results are less fulfilling. The final benedictive chords of the Firebird come across as unsubtle chord-crashing when moved onto five pianos. It's always interesting, but rarely moving. I sat my wife down and played the Brown's Firebird finale back-to-back with Bernstein's version with the NY philharmonic. No comparison.
Yet only one cut really fails. Unfortunately, it was the one I was most hoping would be a success. The idea of weaving Copland's "Simple Gifts" with the largo from Dvorak's New World Symphony was brilliant. Unfortunately, the arrangement is uninspired and weak. They went mining for gold, and only found a little pyrite.
In the end, classical music fans will find this an interesting experiment, but not much more. Non-fans (which appear to be Sony's target audience) will like the gee-whiz go-power and energy. Perhaps the 5 Browns will serve the world best as recruiters for the classical cause, whose converts will go on to discover the Serkin's and Van Cliburn's of the world.
Final thought. While listening to the album I got a mental image of the 5 Browns recording the Minute Waltz. At the end of the take they look anxiously at the in-studio coach. "How'd we do?" they ask. The coach looks up from his stopwatch. "58.2 seconds," he says. Their heads drop. "Our personal best is 57-flat," one of them says. "Come on, guys, let's do it again. I know we can do a 56.5".
Wow!.......2007-01-10
I highly recommend this DVD/CD combo disc to appreciate that FIVE people play simultaneously in lock-step rhythm. Let alone, siblings. It is quite a feat to accomplish their task, and wholly resonated when you listen to the depth of tonal quality in their unique selections.

Ladysmith Black Mambazo proved itself pliable enough when the a capella group was heavily featured on Paul Simon's Graceland. Other crossover collaborations have followed, but few work as seamlessly as this collection, which features old LBM songs, Zulu traditionals and European classical material done in collaboration with the English Chamber Orchestra. The rich vocal sound literally fuses with the classical musicians in much the same way as a classical choral group does. To its credit, the orchestra (and arranger Isak Roux) loosens up to fit the more oral/aural traditions of the singers--the music is less precise and reliant on virtuosity. The orchestra provides a particularly sympathetic counterpoint on the traditional "Awu Wemadoda" and is downright playful sounding on "Dona Nobis Pacem." Sounding as elegant and reverent, Ladysmith more than meets the orchestra halfway on the famous Bach choral piece "Jesu, Joy Of Man's Desiring." Making borders and boundaries irrelevant, this is a work of startling beauty that couldn't be improved upon. --Tad Hendrickson

Simply Amazing!.......2007-02-12
I have been a fan of Ladysmith for many years and have a few of their albums but this is simply amazing! Music truly has no boundaries and they have used their God given talent to touch the lives of many people. It doesn't sound like it's possible, but they have really crossed many boundaries and this album is just another example of how far one can go if only they believe!
One world.......2007-01-12
This CD has multipal messages, but the one that strikes me most is the juxtaposition of European "classical" and African "classical". The human soul is one and at the same time unique. That message comes through clearly, and as a bonus, the powerful messages that each track provides in both content and style must not be missed.
Beautiful.......2005-04-26
I had never heard of this group before and since I like to investigate different types of music, I decided to give it a try. I have truly enjoyed this CD. The more I listen, the more I like. I would highly recommend.
Breathtaking! .......2005-02-11
When I first saw the album, I thought---what???? Traditionally, Ladysmith Black Mambazo sings acapella with the notable exceptions of the times they accompany Paul Simon. The group sings a beautiful, close harmony and uses vocalese techniques to provide the occasional percussive click or ululation. Still, the lineup was hard to resist.
"No Boundaries" is pretty amazing stuff, let me tell you. With the help of the English Chamber Orchestra directed by Ralph Gothoni, the two groups meet together on each other's common ground. Ladysmith sings traditional "Amazing Grace", Bach's "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" Schubert's "Sanctus." Then the orchestra gets into the African groove for music from South Africa.
Altogether a beautifully arranged, sung, and orchestrated work. If you are new to Ladysmith, this is a good CD to start. If you're an old fan, you'll definitely want "No Boundaries" to complete your collection.
Beautiful. Simply beautiful........2005-02-05
The collaboration between Ladysmith Black Mambazo and the English Chamber Orchestra cannot be improved. The sound that both ensembles make together truly is beautiful indeed, as the original Mambazo songs (of which includes "Jabulani (Rejoice)", "Lifikile Ivangeli (The Gospel Arrives)"), the Zulu traditional selections ("Awu Wemadoda (Hey, Man)", "Walil'Umntwana (The Child is Crying)") to the classicals "Dona Nobis Pacem", a joyous song in its own right, "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" and "Ave Verum Corpus". This album definately and distinctly proves that music has no boundaries. Mambazo founder and lead singer Joseph Shabalala and Orchestra conductor Ralf Gothoni (along with arranger Isak Roux) have brought to their many fans a selection of compelling and captivating tunes.

Pulled together quickly as a response to the Kosovar refugee crisis in the Balkans in the spring of 1999, No Boundaries presents 16 rare and previously unavailable tracks from 15 late-'90s rock powerhouses. The only outfit represented twice here is Pearl Jam, who contribute the likable A and B sides of a 1998 fan-club vinyl single--covers of "Last Kiss" and "Soldier of Love," '60s jukebox faves given refreshingly tossed-off treatments by Seattle's favorite sons. Also drawn to the benevolent project are Alanis Morissette (chipping in a live version of "Baba"), Sarah McLachlan (a live "Mary"), and Tori Amos (the previously unheard studio track, "Merman"). Oldsters (Neil Young, Black Sabbath, Peter Gabriel) mix with relative upstarts (Korn, Jamiroquai, and Rage Against the Machine, who pummel Bruce Springsteen's "Ghost of Tom Joad" to suit their needs), all for a noble cause. --Steven Stolder
Customer Reviews:
Good mix, good bands, good cause........2003-11-17
This was probably bought by more "Pearl Jam" fans than anyone. Two songs from those guys are on here, both good. Besides those, the tracks I like most are from "Rage Against The Machine", "Bush", "Peter Gabriel", and a great live "Neil Young" song. But most of them are good. If you enjoy the majority of these bands, then this is well worth it, especially used. If there's a "PJ" fan in the world who still wants this cd for "Last Kiss", it's also on their "Lost Dogs" collection.
Great.......2000-12-21
Though it was thrown together hastily, NO BOUNDARIES is fantastic. It includes a pre-sell-out-KoRn (who still aren't very good), Pearl Jam (Last Kiss was a big push for the album. but it gets on my nerves), Sarah McLaughlin (Mary is a fantastic song, its great live), Alanis Morrisette (you can barely tell its live, its identical to the studio version, but still good), Bush(my favorite. I LOVE it.), The Wallflowers (Jakob Dylan has all the potential. He could be his father. Accept his voice is much better and his lyrics different. But I still love them both), Bens Fold Five, Peter Gabriel, Black Sabbath, Rage Against the Machine (pre break up. with their politically oreinted music this is a nice change. I love da Boss)and ther Indigo Girls (GO is a great song, even the studio version. I love Amy Rays voice. This is a SUPERB recording.)
Just buy it.
An Ok cd if you like that kind of stuff.......2000-05-02
I bought this cd for "Last Kiss" which I'm sure a lot of people did. It was worth the money. Especially that "Solider of Love". WOW! I also enjoyed the remix of "Freak On A Leash" by KoRn. I liked that song and I didn't really want to buy the whole KoRn cd.
This is just my opinion. If you don't necessarily like this kind of music then you better look before you leap (listen before you buy). I thought it was an awesome cd.
Awesome CD.......1999-12-28
This is a great CD! The remix of KoRn's "Freak on a leash" is amazing and Rage Against The Machine and Pearl Jam did a great job. Buy this Cd as soon as possible.
No Boundaries rulez for Variety.......1999-11-25

Totally Underrated, legendary shredder........2007-02-16
I think the reason why we don't hear Michael Angelo in the same breath as Steve Vai or Paul Gilbert is because he stuck to his guns and never did anything as overtly commercial as those two. Paul Gilbert joined M.r Big and did essentially pop rock with the shred toned down, and of course Vai is well known for being involved in projects from Zappa to David Lee Roth. I'm not criticizing those guys but the fact of the matter is, Michael Angelo is just as good as those guys, especially showing his strengths on his solo debut, No Boundraies. The album features everything from shred, prog fusion, to all out thrash metal, to soft neo classical passagess. I would say its up there with Jason Becker's Perpetual Burn because of its ability to be catchy and complex at the same time. The man stuck to his guns, recorded great solo albums while others went for more commercial pastures. Its a shame alot of people haven't heard of Angelo but I think people are starting to, and will continue to. What I hope for is a collaboration (which is actually rumored to take place one day) between another great shredder, Michael Romeo. Just imagine an album with both these geniuses together. That's going to be something definitely worth owning when it comes out!
NOT the fastest, and boring........2006-12-07
Michael Angelo is NOT the fastest shredder. That bore goes to Herman Li (LEE) from a power metal band called Dragonforce. He is so fast that you will check your disc to see if it is running at the correct speed. It all sounds speeded up and so boring. It's all power for the cause and saying very little musically.
If you would like shred with tasteful musical lines, then listen to Scotty Anderson, Danny Gatton, Jimmy Bruno, Eric Johnson and jazz guitarists like Joe Pass and of course John McLaughlin with the original Mahavishnu Orchestra. Now that's impressive!
Great CD.......2006-06-01
I picked up this CD not long ago and I'm glad I did. MAB, as a player and composer, is absolutley great. I would go over the track list, but I think someone else has already done it.
Also, all these people on here saying "he has no emotion", and other things like that... have you guys ever stopped and realized, everyone has different emotions? It stands the same for guitar. Playing fast may be his way of showing emotion, just like some people show emotion by crying, and others don't. You get the picture.
Overall though, good CD. I would suggest picking it up!
20 years too late.......2006-06-01
If you want to listen to somebody playing scales over and over again without any hint of originality or feel which is reminiscent of the 80s, Michael Angelo is the guitar player for you. But if you want to listen to some decent progressive guitar and like me, absolutely bored sh**less of the era get a Satch album.
fastest pick, that's all.......2005-11-27
Any number of finger pickers can give you more notes per second if that's what turns you on. And as for flamenco players who combine all sorts of techniques to match speed and passion they are a mountain above this style of pick-centered guitar technique.

One of the best unknowns I have ever heard. The music really drives your soul.
living up to what you expect.......2005-04-24
The winner of the Eurovision Song Contest gives you what you want: Turkish pop in high energy sound. Big productions, catchy melodies, oriental influences and a good voice.
At last something a bit different..........2004-07-17
Blimey what a great album! I too purchased this since seeing (and hearing) Sertab on Eurovision. I was lucky enough to grab the 5 track euro copy of the single "Everyway that I can" (which has the 12" version - shame not on this album though) and i've been hooked ever since! It's a perfect blend of traditional Turkish sounds mixed with modern, pop & dance beats: top this with her fantastic voice and you have a winner! I would call it perfect pop for people who aren't too keen on the rubbish currently clogging up the music charts...
...and a bonus! which is that despite some modern R&B rhythms, there's no rapping (or "yo! yo!" in the background) to spoil the proceedings. I agree the songs are a bit short but then I feel that this album is more quality over quantity.
I gave this 4 stars because of the track "Back to the beach". It's a bit too euro-trash for me but don't let that put you off because others like "Got me like oh", "More than words" & "Love bites" & of course "Everyway that I can" will grab you instantly. Nice too hear something refreshingly different and it reminded me of Sarah Brightman's "Harem" as it's similar. If you like this, you're gonna love that!

Expert contemporary sensibilities to old bluegrass themes.......2003-06-25
Mark Newton hails from Kentucky, and he currently lives in Virginia. At age 14, he played in his father's band, Frog Newton and the Tadpoles. After his first band (Cabin Hill) in the mid-70s, Newton joined the Heights of Grass in 1976. Two years later, he was playing with the Knoxville Grass before rejoining the Heights of Grass in 1981. In 1983, four of the five members of the Heights of Grass formed the Virginia Squires. Newton decided to quit the music business in 1988. A couple years later, he formed the Mark Newton Entertainment Agency and began promoting the Graves Mountain Bluegrass Festival in Virginia. In 1998, Mark recorded his first solo album, "Living a Dream" with Bill Emerson, Ralph Stanley, Tony Rice, Dudley Connell, and others. The following year, The Mark Newton band formed. Newton's solo album called "Follow Me Back to the Fold" featured duets with Rhonda Vincent, Lynn Morris, Claire Lynch, Dale Ann Bradley, other women singers. That project won the IBMA for Recorded Event of the Year for 2001. Mark Newton's band debuted on record in 2001 with "Charlie Lawson's Still," the title track which spent eight months on the Bluegrass Unlimited chart.
"No Boundaries" marks the release of the second album for The Mark Newton Band. It includes songs from bandmembers Mike Munford (banjo) and Troy Engle (mandolin, fiddle), as well as Tom T. and Dixie Hall, Jimmy Martin, Tim O'Brien, Randall Hylton, Billy Smith and Becky Buller. To some, the project may seem a bit contrived with the familiar bluegrass themes of lost love, home, rambling fever and trains. However, the hook in "Blues for Breakfast," the lonely bluesy licks of "Cabin in the Trees," the vocal harmonies in "A Beautiful Home," and Troy Engle's twin fiddles in "Heartaches and Teardrops" bring expert new contemporary bluegrass sensibilities to old subjects that have been sung about for ages.
Their breakdown treatment of "Cindy" is a showcase for some hot picking. Tim O'Brien's "Train on the Island" is a contemporary song that regularly returns to a melodic old-timey sounding riff. The cover of Jimmy Martin's "Losing You" might be the "best thing yet" with the strings shining on their breaks. Mike Munford's instrumental "Linedrive" comes off as sharp as a razor. The album closes with bassplayer Bob Goff, Jr. singing lead on "Railroad Dollar," followed by Troy Engle singing his self-penned clipper, "Only Way I Know." Besides Newton, Munford, Engle and Goff, the album features guest bassist Ronnie Simpkins on three cuts. It might not even have hurt to bring in some hot lead guitar and dobro guests on a couple tracks.
The Mark Newton Band is a very solid bluegrass quartet with some high-tone players and singers. They're a class outfit, and this album is right smooth. It's got all the necessary ingredients to further launch this fine band to even greater heights. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)
