The "Golden Age" referred to here spans The Jazz Singer and the advent of the talkies to the death throes of the old studio system in the 1960s. So vast was the era's musical landscape that even this 42-track, double-disc anthology can't encompass all its peaks. Not surprisingly, the bulk of this collection originated with the Tiffany's of the screen musical, M-G-M, a body of work whose riches here encompass both pop-cultural bedrock ("Over the Rainbow," "Singin' in the Rain," "There's No Business Like Show Business," etc.) and some less familiar, if equally delightful star turns: Clark Gable gamely "Puttin' On the Ritz"; the sassy, 1948 original of "The Lady Is a Tramp" by Lena Horne; and a loopy duet of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" by Esther Williams and Ricardo Montalban. Fred Astaire's elegant, epochal reign at RKO and M-G-M is represented by "Night and Day," "Let's Face the Music and Dance," and three others, while Metro mainstays Gene Kelly and Judy Garland share equal time and billing. It's not perfect--Cagney's "Yankee Doodle Boy" and/or some Sinatra seem more logical choices than the odd "bonus" duet of Casablanca's "As Time Goes By" and "Lara's Theme" from Dr. Zhivago that close out disc one--but it's a stunning, surprisingly comprehensive primer on the Hollywood film musical nonetheless. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:

Back in the '70s, the rapid development of synthesizers and electronic keyboards had a huge impact on popular music, with Isao Tomita among the leading exponents of multimedia, surround-sound events associated in Western Europe with such very different musicians as Rick Wakeman and Jean-Michel Jarre. The present disc has less grandiose aims, being a well-balanced selection of, to quote the original liner notes, "Virtuoso electronic performances of Debussy's beautiful tone paintings." It's easy to scoff at the concept behind Tomita's approach--take some of the most poetic music around and give it the consistency of aural cotton wool--yet there's no denying the skill with which he translates Debussy's soundworld, preserving the harmonic interest of the piano originals and bringing out many subtleties of texture. Inevitably the slower numbers come off best--"Clair de Lune" or "Reverie" could easily become chill-out favorites. "Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun," however, is not so much a travesty as a vaporization of the orchestral masterpiece. A mixed bag, but with enough musical interest to make Tomita's "sound clouds" of more than just curiosity value. --Richard WhitehouseCustomer Reviews:

Writer/director Robert Altman's predilection for complex character studies has focused a jaundiced eye on everything from Nashville to the fashion industry. Here the director explores the interactions of a contemporary ballet troupe, set to a diverse pop/classical score that's anything but predictable. The dominant theme that runs throughout is the American songbook staple "My Funny Valentine," given four distinctly different idiomatic turns here by Elvis Costello, Chet Baker, the Kronos Quartet, and the piano/cello duet of Marvin Laird and Clay Ruede. The remaining source tracks range from the expected classical roots (Bach and Saint-Saens) to Twin Peaks vocal icon Julee Cruise and the world music of Light Rain, but it's left to veteran songwriter/composer/arranger Van Dyke Parks to weave those disparate influences together in his orchestral score, a task the included excerpts argue he's accomplished with typical wit and considerable charm. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:

"My Funny Valentine takes center stage ~ Rodgers & Hart".......2004-03-03
One of my all time favorite songs by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart "MY FUNNY VALENTINE", is presented in four different performances ~ in this order we have Elvis Costello, Chet Baker (a classic interpretation by a very talented young artist at the peak of his career), Marvin Laird (piano) and Clay Ruede (cello), Kronos Quartet ~ brings to the fold popular and classical performers ~ each approaching this standard cue with all melodic magic they can muster.
Stand outs in my book is "CURTAIN CALLS" and "BLUE SNAKE & ZEBRAS", both composed by Van Dyke Parks with extraordinary orchestration and counter parts ~ "THE WORLD SPINS", from composers Angelo Badalmenti and David K. Lynch, performed by Julee Cruise is intoxicating and thrlling, with no hangover ~ let's mention "MENUETT" (J.S. Bach) and "APPALACHIA WALTZ" (Mark O'Connor), performed by the one and only renown cello player who is recognized world wide, Yo-Yo Ma ~ "RABEKIN" (Russ Guthier), wonderful cue that rings so true for the film, a meaningful fantasy instrumental, blending Middle Eastern rhythms from world fusion group, Light Rain...gotta love it!

Susan Graham - Songs of Ned Rorem

Contemporary composer Ned Rorem is typically likened to an American Schubert (living in Paris) for the fecundity, emotional range, and quality of his songs (though this represents only one facet of a prolific career). And Rorem's masterful 1998 cycle Evidence of Things Not Seen would seem to justify that reputation, as does this marvelous anthology from the Rorem songbook of the past half-century. The composer is fond of dividing musicians into the "German" and the "French," clearly identifying himself with the latter for the elusive sparkle and subtle play of shadows that characterize his art. What other kind of sensibility could "through-compose" Gertrude Stein's "I Am Rose" in a deftly perfect 27 seconds? Fortunately, American lyric mezzo Susan Graham intuitively understands this expressive aspect, as does pianist-partner Malcolm Martineau. Graham is constantly attentive to the marriage of music and text in the 32 songs here and phrases their little worlds into being with grace and wit. She can shade to a sweet vanishing point or allow her voice to blossom, orchidlike, into a dazzling profusion of colors. Few of these songs, which draw on the poetry of Walt Whitman, Theodore Roethke, Frank O'Hara, and many others, last more than two minutes. But their resonance lingers, whether in the haunting "Opus 101"--with its lean but potent string trio scoring--or the enigmatic "That Shadow, My Likeness" from Whitman. --Thomas MayCustomer Reviews:
