    If you haven't heard of Black n Blue, consider that Gene Simmons produced some of their albums, John Kalodner says he still doesn't get why they were not huge, and Bruce Fairbain got the job of working on Slippery When Wet because Jon Bon Jovi loved his work with this band. It's classic 80's hard rock, on the Bon Jovi/Poison side of the tracks, and this box contains four albums, each in a cardboard sleeve that replicates the original album cover ( but let's not kid ourselves, it's done like this to be cheap ), and a DVD of a live performance, which obviously is still VHS quality, but at least it's not going to wear out. There's also one booklet, which talks about the different albums, and it's all in a cardboard box. Overall, I think the quality of presentation is not great, but it's worth it to own these classic albums, and in the end, who cares what the box looks like - the music rocks.

    5 out of 5 stars "Lost" Songs Are Still Very Welcome!.......2007-06-02

    My review is actually 4 1/2 stars. First of all, the quality of the recordings here sound nothing like "demos". With the exception of the one song from 1982, they are all very good. The newest songs (from 1987), take the band on a direction they wanted to go instead of what ended up on "Big Bang" (I wish they'd stop apologizing for that awesome cd). Those two newest songs, however, are not so hard that you can't tell that the band was just maturing. They sound like part Pyromania-era Def Leppard, with some kind of Krokus/Helix sound mixed in. The majority of the songs were written just pre and post "Rock Ain't Dead" -era. That CD ranks as one of my top 5 of all time, so as I listen to the songs that didn't make the cut, I tend to agree. Which is not to say that they're bad, they are all very good, one of them "Keep On Beleiving" is a classic, which should have made "Rock Ain't Dead"
    So....if you are a Heavy Pettin fan, you won't be disappointed with this collection, 10 times better than most bands' "demos" that come out years after the band breaks up. If you are not a "Pettin" fan, this is just some great rock that you will love.
    By the way, I also own the ultra-rare "Demos '98" CD from the band, but sadly have no story about how it fits into the band's history. If anyone knows, please drop me a line.

    I love this collection of previously unreleased material for a number of reasons. First, there's evidence of a fine rock band here that had it given the chance of directing its own future would have went all the way to the top. Secondly, because there is more of all the band's influences on this album than on their released material. Thirdly, the track 'My Love For You' is absolutely AOR at its best. Rock on lads.

    5 out of 5 stars Heavy Pettin Prodigal Songs is GREAT!.......2007-05-06

    This is the finest collection of never released songs from a hard rock band that I have heard in a long time. The music is a little bit on the heavier side than their previously released material of 20+ years ago. Although these "newer" songs were recorded 20+ years ago, they sound new and fresh like the band has just recorded and released a brand new album. The songs really don't sound dated at all, as hard rock and heavy metal are making a true comeback with bands reforming and playing with the old school rock and roll sound of the 1980's but updated just a bit for the 21st century. These bands include Heavy Pettin, of course, Krokus, Judas Priest, and many others.

    Buy this cd, as I think that you will find it surprisingly different and heavier than most of their previously released stuff. You won't be disappointed.

    Gamma Ray is probably one of my favorite bands and I would have to say as far as power metal goes, it's right between them and Hanson's old band Helloween as far as who is superior. I think this is quite an enjoyable CD but there's something missing from it. Gamma Ray's previous release, "No World Order" absolutely blew me away and almost every song on there was classic power metal in my opinion. However, on this album I have to say there are numerous good songs but I can't say that there's any real classics on here. Kai Hanson is absolutely one of the geniuses in metal and boy I really wish the U.S. realized this, but they never will because power metal is considered "uncool" here which is a shame, especially for Gamma Ray because no offense to any of the other power metal bands, Gamma Ray definitely has more edge to them. Oh well.

    In conclusion, this is a good, solid album, it just isn't mindblowing like "No World Order" but regardless, KEEP ON ROCKING KAI!!!!

    For me this is their best album, in metal-rules.com it is ranked in #3 in their "TOP OF 2005" list...., the only song I don't like is Majesty...it seems out of place...breaks the armony of the album.

    I have to agree...this album is so amazing. Some new influences and different aproaches can be heard on this album. Judas Priest and Black Sabbath came to my mind when I first listened to it. But without losing their power metal touch...this band can show that metal today is still strong as it was back in the day!

    Gammaray has made another great album. Despite of the lack of the "traditional" intro for the first song, most songs have a great intro and go through smart progressions which make this a versatile album. I have to admit that I didn't like a couple of songs in this album, but the rest of the songs are excellent.

    Here is my view on the content of this album:

    My Temple - Has no intro - but its fast and well written.

    Fight - probably the best song of this album - if you didn't like it at first listen to it again. It has very nice riffs and fast drumming. It also carries a great message of hope and motivation. This is pure Gammaray.

    Strange World - this song is another one of my favorites, and is very reminiscent of early Helloween due to the various changes and the dual lead guitars parts. The lyrics are very good and change in style throughout the song.

    Hell is Thy Home - as someone else mentioned its lyrics are too hellish, but the guitar riffs make up for it.

    Blood Religion - Has a great intro and it's written to tell a great story. This song should be included in a Horror Film Compilation Album - along with Sonata Artica's song "Wolf and Raven"!

    Condemned to Hell - It has a jazzy intro - which I don't like much. The Chorus is hellishly excellent.

    Spiritual Dictator - Another best for this album - similar to Fight, it includes the typical Gammaray arsenal of sound and speed.

    Majesty - Also a jazzy intro - but it changes after 30 seconds - However I think Condemned to Hell ended up a little better than this one, particularly because the chorus is slow.

    How Long - This is the slow song of this album, so it definitely stands out.

    Revelation - Very nice intro and follow up. This song makes it worthwhile to listen to this album all the way to then end. Furthermore, it contains some of the best lyrics of this album.

    Overall, if it wasn't for songs #4 and #8, this would be an instant classic. The other 8 songs on this album still merit excellent recommendation to buy, hence the 5 stars.

    This album is a lost gem of eightie's hard rock at its best. Featuring Pete Way (ex-UFO) and great guitar work by Paul Chapman (also ex-UFO), the songs are strong and catchy.

    I finally picked up this disc with much hesitation. I am a huge UFO/Schenker fan and being the cd completeist that I am, I was quite bothered by this release. I viewed it as being some substandard demos that were the result of an aborted project. Well to a degree that remains true, however the music is so good it really doesn't matter what the facts are. First of all, I feared substandard sound and production quality. I find the disc highly listenable and enjoyable. It doesn't sound demo quality. It really is crisp and clear. Jeff Martin's drum tracks are punchy and solid. Schenker's guitar tone is unmistakeable. It really has an album quality sound to it...Okay enough said there. The songs are simply great. They really do not sound punky, in as much as they sound like great bluesy rock and roll. I see it more Stonesy than anything. Maybe in some way this disc might serve as a glimpse into what the Rolling Stones would have sounded like with Scenker on guitar, had he joined them when offered. The material is very simple, but at the same time, really good. Here are two musicians in Michael Schenker and Pete Way who are both accomplished songwriters had have developed their craft over the past 30 years. These songs have a feel of being put together quickly and easily between the two of them. Sometimes that can be a bad thing, but not in this case. They are fresh and simple, yet catchy and enjoyable. Pete's vocals are not Phil Mogg in any way, but they aren't bad. I would compare them to a Keith Richards type style, which adds to the Stones comparision.
    Overall this not in the same vein as MSG or UFO, but is proves to be an interesing glimpse into what these two great musicians and friends could hammer out together when getting together to jam and write a few songs. I would really recommend this disc to anyone who enjoys either UFO or just great, simple bluesy rock and roll music....Give it a try, you will enjoy it....

    This is just what all of us who grew up on 80's hard rock need to hear. It is so refreshing. Just plain, no-nonsense, in your face, kick butt rock. Michael is just magical. His melodic tone and heavy riffin' is all over this cd. Pete does not have a very good voice, but that does not matter, it really fits well with the music. Heck, does Lemmy have a good voice? Jeff Martin plays drums on this one and is really, really good, just check out the song "Kicked Out". One of Michaels' best solo's of all-time is on "Senorita". This is one of my favorite cd's of the last 10 years; I can't take it out of my player. Buy It!

    Michael Schenker and Pete Way...together again?
    What's The Plot, and what kind of album is it?
    Does it sound like UFO?

    The Plot seem to be a side project to Michael Schenker's solo career and Pete Way's commitment to UFO. Together with drummer Jeff Martin, the legendary rockers have temporary (?) formed a three piece band, going for a different musical approach to what we're used to.

    I have mixed feeling regarding this album. The rock `n' roll rebel in me like the raw and energetic style which is a blend of pub rock, punk rock, and classic rock `n' roll in Eddie Cochrane manner. My more sophisticated side think it all sounds like a bunch of drunken amateurs. Pete Way is handling the singing but he is not a great singer - sounding a tiny bit like Lemmy (Motorhead) from time to time. Although the material is raw and unpolished there is usually a melodic touch to many of the songs, something that makes me wonder how it would sound with a proper singer - maybe Phil Mogg.

    If you expect The Plot to sound like UFO, you might be disappointed big time, but the the fuel injection that this album actually is, will most likely grow on you. Maybe you'll hear a bit of Quireboys, a bit of Little Caesar, and most certainly a lot of attitude.

    A band that yoinks their name from a fantasy series is normally not the sort of band I would be quick to support but Morgion are a death-doom fest that cannot be easily ignored. This startling produced record is thick with heavy bass-oriented riffs, clear leadwork and rolling-thunder drumming that brings life to a shocking slow rhythm section. Morgion craft longer epics that slide between mid-paced Sabbath groove (not Pantera groove) and slower doom pieces that make one think of Eyes of Ligeia. Solid chops, grunting (but not silly) vocals and well planned movements help one get into the darker mindset that is intially clouded by the strange-fantasy aspect.

    There isn't one clunker on this black morass of doom, in fact it's one of the few CD's I play from end to end without needing to look at the insert to figure which songs I wish to skip. This is incredibly rare, as few bands can keep my attention beyond the rare classic song they drag up. While few of these songs stand as "metal classics" on their own...the flow of the album lets the songs wind in and out like a story (though tasteful, the music - not the lyrics- tells the story here)...I am truly impressed with the thematic musical narration presented here.

    Morgion are unsung heroes in many ways...but they've mixed the best of death and doom metal and get my full endorsement. I suggest that you pick this up, possibly more than any other CD they have released since it's the most accessible Morgion effort.

    In agreement with most of what Mr. Adam Wiggins said in his review, the premier album by Morgion excellently defines doom metal. I read somewhere that the band "knows a thing or two about how to create an atmosphere of despair and devastation," or something like that. It's a pretty short release, with only five songs, but the third, an instrumental called Travesty, is a beautiful and haunting piece of work. The sound quality is not really clean, but I think that's what they were going for - a tone that makes the music more somber and raw. This is a commendable debut, but the follow-up, Solinari, sounds crystal clear and contains eight majestic, perfectly written songs. Buy both CDs and enjoy!

    I'm not a big doom metal fan, but this one is very high on my list of killer CDs. The sound is great - the guitars are raw, but the production and balance are very good. All of the songs are very solid, ranging from slow to mid-paced to (ocassionally) fast. The vocals are always low and growled, just like I like 'em. The composition is fairly simple, but well thought out and never boring. Probably my favorite doomy album of all time. Excellent artwork and layout on the packaging, as well.

    I'm the most die-hard Heavy Pettin fan that I know, and the stuff on this box set is top-notch. But most or all of it has been released before. My biggest gripe is the omission of anything from "Big Bang", which for many fans was their best, and one of my top 10 cds of all time. The problem is those in and around the band keep referring to that cd as a mistake or that their sound was forced by others in the business and not the direction they wanted to go. Well they went there, and it is a big part of true "Pettology" and deserved to be on this box set, especially now that you can't easily get "Big Bang" on cd. For those that don't own the first two cds, I would highly suggest to get this set.

      This was/is a great album. I say "was" because I bought it when it came out and I was 17...I had heard a few tracks from Y&T albums Black Tiger and Mean Streak and thought it would be good, and had older brothers who had the first two Yesterday and Today albums and was curious. Well, it was just right for the mood in 1987, the year I graduated high school.

      "All American Boy" is just how I felt--it rings true now as well as then, I was hot for chicks and they were all over me. It is a cool song that brings back memories (I just picked up a CD version); "Anytime at All" is also a great track...really brings back the spirit of being a teenager and memories of listening it while driving my convertible.

      The rest of the songs are also great...I don't skip any of them on the CD when playing in my truck (I had a '67 Ford Bronco in high school and now I've got a '70 Ford Bronco--owned two others in between) as they all bring back very fond memories. But even if you didn't listen to Y&T in high school, you'll also like this cool melodic rock. I had all '80's music at my disposal during my time in high school and this was one of the top five in my deck during high school.

      I don't know why Y&T didn't get more popular than they did but I loved them. If you like bands from this era you'll love this CD.

      At the time of its release, "Down For The Count" seemed more impressive. After "Black Tiger" and "Mean Streak" set a tone, "In Rock We Trust" seemed to carry the Y&T legacy forward, but cutesy, keyboard-infused ditties like "All-American Boy" almost ground the momentum to a halt. Even "Summertime Girls," likely the band's most well-known single, seems to feature the wispy keyboards as much as Dave Meniketti and Joey Alves' dual guitars. Despite that, "In The Name Of Rock" is a great leadoff to the album, and even the band's recast of Loggins & Messina's "Your Mama Don't Dance" will have you singing as you rip down the road. "Down For The Count" doesn't exactly disappoint, but it won't exactly leave you in breathless excitement either. A must have for fans, but the casual listener might want to try something else.

      Y&T released their Down for the Count album in 1985. At the time of its release, the band seemed on the way to stardom. Their previous studio album, the excellent In Rock We Trust, would come just short of achieving gold status, and their first live album, Open Fire, cemented their status as a stellar live act. In addition, Open Fire's only studio track, "Summertime Girls", would become the band's biggest single, nearly hitting the U.S. Top 40. Released just three months after Open Fire, Down for the Count seemed destined to take the band over the top. However, the great songs were no longer there and the addition of keyboards on several tracks didn't help their cause. As a result, Down for the Count would start a downward spiral that the band could not recover from.

      The album starts out decent enough as "In The Name Of Rock", while not one of their best album openers, is a solid rock anthem. The next track, "All American Boy", which the band released a video for, was a blatant attempt at radio complete with its big riffs, keyboards, and very cheesy lyrics. And the cheese factor continues with the poppy "Anytime At All", the unmemorable "Looks Like Trouble", and the super lame "Don't Tell Me What to Wear." In addition, the inclusion of the already released "Summertime Girls" and a weak version of Loggins & Messina's "Your Mama Don't Dance" suggest that the band weren't ready to release a new album at the time. However, the album isn't completely without merit. "Anything for Money" is a decent rocker and the excellent "Face Like an Angel" proves that the band still had a knack for writing a great power ballad. If this track were released as the single/video, the band's fortunes may have led to a better fate. The closing ballad "Hands of Time" is also decent. All told, the material on Down for the Count gives the impression that Y&T were rushed into the studio by their record company to deliver product. Sadly, the band would never recover from this as future efforts such as the mediocre Contagious and Ten respectively, would fail to gather the attention of the music buying public.

      4 out of 5 stars More than just Summertime Girls.......2006-05-16

      Down for the Count tends to be unfairly slammed as Y&T's "sellout" album. While the band did make a conscious attempt to gain more mainstream success, you can hardly blame them. Plenty of far less talented bands were becoming stars, so why not Y&T?

      The end result was Down for the Count and Y&T's biggest (and dumbest) hit Summertime Girls. Down for the Count was more pop-oriented, but it really wasn't that much of a departure from the band's previous albums. Setting aside Summertime Girls and an uninspired cover of Your Mama Don't Dance, Down for the Count had plenty of excellent songs. Closing track Hands of Time in particular is as good a song as Y&T has ever released. Down for the Count may not equal Black Tiger or Mean Streak, but it is still a good album; and a "good" Y&T album is still better than the best albums from most other bands.

      NOTE: While the 2005 Majestic Records reissue of Down for the Count makes it possible for fans to get this disc without paying the Japanese import price, it is worth noting that the album has not been remastered. I assume label issues were behind the decision to remaster Black Tiger and Mean Streak but simply reissue Down for the Count and In Rock We Trust.
