Making a minor splash in the Madchester scene of the mid '90s, this album was recognized mostly for the impressively rock-steady, neo-psychedelic single "Sway." The rest of the album doesn't know if it wants to be more of a traditional rock-out or a White Album-esque Brit pop effort. Either way, the band fares much better with the follow-up album, Moseley Shoals, which rode the Oasis wave into the mid-'90s as Paul Weller assists in backing vocals and keyboards. --Beth Bessmer

2 out of 5 stars one hit wonder.......2004-10-20

I bought this because of Hundred Mile High City that is featured on the Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels soundtrack. That song rocks, but the rest of the record sounds nothing like it and is pretty boring.

5 out of 5 stars Get Rockin'.......2001-12-21

I heard this playing in my local record store and had to ask who it was! My first thoughts were which band/album from the seventies had I missed? This contains all the excitement of a seventies band with good songs, some riffs, use of wah wah pedal, crisp drumming and interesting vocals. I bought the cd immediately and it has been a favourite since. Definitely worth buying and will lead you to their other albums

5 out of 5 stars everything rock n roll should be.......2001-12-14

when it comes right down to it, good music brings out memorable emotions. i don't really care what anyone has to say about ocean colour scene's stubborn traditionalism. yup, this music sounds like it came straight out of the 60s and 70s, but who are we to penalize them or denigrate them for being born about twenty or thirty years too late? some musical egotists might gasp at the blatant blaspheme that is to follow: ocs stands as tall as nearly anything from the era they idolize. that's right, the proof is in the songs, man. it's goodtime, mind-numbingly passionate rock n roll, that will be timeless. the guitars, the attitude, the vocals, it's all there. and the lyrics are pretty damn good too, even if they sometimes mean less then they seem. just a talented band at what they do. appreciate that and listen to this. not a song will disappoint. my only minor quibble is the absence of their masterpiece, "get away" but at eight minutes, i can see why they left it out. if you don't own their first (real) album yet, this will just make you get that one eventually. and i hate new greatest hits packages. this one's done right.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Album.......2001-11-24

Songs for the Front Row exemplifies what Ocean Colour Scene is all about. This band is about the music, and it is some great music. This modern band from England should be rocking in 1975, but luckily they are here today. Tracks such as "Huckleberry Grove" and "The Riverboat Song" illustrate how diffrent there styles can be, and how they pull it off. I have nothing but praise for this album and this band.

Album Description

Ocean Colour Scene release their brand new studio album "On The Leyline" Brimming over with needle-sharp rockers (the XTC-esque title track) and joyous Everly Brothers inspired romps ('Two Lovers'), 'On The Leyline' sees OCS breaking free of their comfort zone at every turn. If first single 'I Told You So' is a jangle-pop classic in the spirit of 'You Got It Bad', 'On The Leyline' boasts an experimental side too. The caustic 'Mr Brown' ("You promised us the earth/So you could let us down") set to a jaunty calypso, whilst the sublime 'These Days' sees Steve supply lead vocals on a psychedelic excursion reminiscent of Buffalo Springfirled's 'Everydays'. Wellerologists, meanwhile, will be ecstatic at the inclusion of 'For Dancers Only', a song the Modfather recorded in 2006 and as yet unreleased.

Better than North Atlantic Drift? I think not. That album, in my opinion, is the best thing they've done - even better than Moseley and Marchin'. Those three rank as the top OCS albums, and this one is right on the heels of the lesser two. It starts off a tad weak. The opening track, I Told You So, is catchy but not up to par with lead-off songs on their strongest efforts. The second song - On the Leyline, Waiting - sounds like the Smithereens, not a good thing for a band of this caliber. The Weller song is okay, as is Man in the Middle. The album doesn't really start to gain momentum until the 5th song, but from there on out it's excellent. A different arrangement of the tracks would be even more satisfying. All in all, it's good to hear the boys back and they sound good. I have high hopes for this line-up in the years to come.

5 out of 5 stars Marchin' already again!.......2007-05-20

This is a very good album of pop-rock songs. Ocean Colour Scene has grown. Steve Cradock (I insist) is one of the best british guitarists right now. "Go To Sea" is among the highlights of this record and it reminds us all that rock and roll music and guitar playing are one for the other.

The influences and the style are clear. Calling them retro is meaningless at a time when bands like The Kings of Leon, Jet or The Strokes enjoy some success with a sound that's far from being new. The important thing is to deliver good songs, and Ocean Colour Scene knows how to make them. Maybe this is an advantage of being the non-favourites of the critics and count with their own record label, so they have all the freedom to play what they (and us) like.

"You'll Never Find Me" (a song that reminds me of "I'll Follow The Sun" from THE BEATLES FOR SALE) or "Don't Get Me", which features Simon Fowler's harmonica and the sing-along catchy melodie are going to be part of the classics by the band that delivered us "This Day Should Last Forever", "Foxy's Folk Faced" or "The Day We Caught The Train".

"Lonliest Girl In The Whole Wide World" could've been written as a B-Side for the MOSELEY SHOALS singles, just like "Huckleberry Grove" was. Another favourite is "These Days I'm Tired". An acoustic song with touches of the early 70's progressive songs with a melancholic sound.

The bassist Dan Sealey and the other guitarist, Andy Bennett finally receive their opportunity for being part of the recording of this whole new studio album. Sealey also makes his debut as a songwriter with "Man In The Middle" and the result is a good guitar-based song. Maybe the new blood of Ocean Colour Scene will lead the band to a new big time.

So I can say that ON THE LEYLINE surpassed my own expectations. It's a better album than AN HYPERACTIVE WORKOUT... or NORTH ATLANTIC DRIFT. It was ten years ago when MARCHIN' ALREADY went on to knock down Oasis from the # 1 in the charts; and this is what I see, a band marchin' already good again!...a quality album, buy it!

4 out of 5 stars Not Marchin' Already, But Good Enough..........2007-05-08

While a wait for this "new" album was somewhat a pain, it's nice to see OCS blend the sound they're known for with something a bit more "radio happy" than the folkie phase they dipped into after Damon Minchella left the band. Now five members strong, the sound is definitely fuller, althouhg, not as mature given the years the band has been together. I definitely like the sound, while I'm still making my way through the tracks (showed up on my door this morning from the UK). Now, only if this and their other albums received some substantial airplay over here in the US.

The single, "I Told You So" definitely has a hook, but many of the other tracks on the CD are just as good or better. If you HAVEN'T heard of OCS and are looking for something a bit different than the typical claptrap on the US airwaves, given these fellas a try.

1 out of 5 stars What a weak album by such a good band.......2005-06-14

Having been an Ocean Colour Scene fan for since 1996 I was shocked at the quality of this album after their previous album "North Atlantic Drift" was such a good release full of promise and great songs.

This album is just weak from cover to songs. The boys have taken an approach to songs that just sounds very lazy, there is probably only 2 songs on this album that could be in the bracket of "good" which when you consider other OCS releases "good" is average as normally there are 2 songs that are "amazing".

Their take on "Wah-Wah" is appaling and rigid. Next single "This Day Should Last Forever" makes you wish the song didn't seem to last forever. The albums first single "Free My Name" seems like a traditional re-packaging of any old OCS song and it shows through with it's tacky string section hookline and Spectoresque/grotesque wall of sound attempt.

There are moments on this album that make you go "wow that's not bad" but these moments are far and few between, mainly it is Steve Cradocks guitar playing that makes for these comments.

If you only own 1 or 2 Ocean Colour Scene albums or don't own any then I recommend looking at other albums as this newest one is simply for the collector.

    4 out of 5 stars Good stuff.......2005-04-17

Ocean Colour Scene is the official mod group. They are featured in a lot of Guy Ritchie films. They are well dressed lads. This records starts off well with "Everything Comes At The Right Time" which rocks with unique fury. "Free My Name looks back at Northern Soul and Motown. They even do "Wah Wah" by George Harrison, which is from one of my all time favorite albums. The Modfather himself, Paul Weller, shows up on one track "Waving Not Drowning." Many British musicians make appearances on this recording that is very British. This is another quality record by the Scene.

    3 out of 5 stars Journeymen.......2005-04-09

The problem with being a journeyman group is that, no matter how good you are or how much you grow, you tend to have the same stalwart fans. Ocean Colour Scene were overrated when they first happened on the Britrock scene, but they got better and better from then on. Problem is, most U.S. exposure was to their Faces-like debut, and the taste of the time was not for blues-based rockers. Too bad. Because OCS's last release, Mechanical Wonder, was wonderful. And their latest, with its long and awkward title, is almost as good. Their rockers are good here (if unspectacular), but its the ballads where Simon Fowler shines. "I Love You" is as grand and simple as its title. And -- here here -- it's felt, not processed like so much other rock and roll on both sides of the Atlantic.

    4 out of 5 stars Somber.......2005-04-04

Ocean Colour Scene have never had a big following in the US. Like Paul Weller, they are one of the UK's best-kept secrets. Like Weller, OCS write songs that have a very British feel and lyrics that deal with often Brit/European themes. Perhaps this is why widespread success has eluded both artists in the US. After a couple of years without a US distributor, OCS are back in the US (on cd at least) with "A Hyperactive Workout..." Unfortunately, I don't think this cd is likely to win them any new fans in the States. Although quite good, many of the songs are slow, mournful sounding ballads that suggest a recent relationship breakup for singer Simon Fowler. There are upbeat tunes such as first single "Free My Name" and "This Day Should Last Forever". Drummer Oscar Harrison also makes his lead vocal debut with "My Time" which has a somewhat reggae feel to it. Fans of OCS know that this is their first studio album since the departure of bassist Damon Minchella, who was replaced by Dan Sealey with Andy Bennett brought in on second guitar to round out the sound. What's curious about this is that all of the songs on "Hyperactive Workout..." were written and performed by the nucleous of original members Simon Fowler/Oscar Harrison/and Steve Craddock. Sealey and Bennett do not appear on the album at all. Apparently, they are in the band on a "live performance" basis only. Overall a good cd, but again, nothing in my opinion that will gain new fans on this side of the Atlantic.

5 out of 5 stars OCS's best album by far.......2007-03-09

This is without doubt the best album they produced. They are truly great musicians who love their work. They recieved excellent backing from their friend Paul Weller, who also plays on the album, as have they on his.
The tracks range from catchy rocking melodies to moody and thought provoking. I believe that tracks from this album if not the album itself reached No 1 in the UK in the Mid to late 1990's. It certainly deserved it and will stand the test of time.

    3 out of 5 stars Yawn.......2007-01-07

It's okay, but I've never been able to warm to these tunes. They just don't stick with me.

4 out of 5 stars One of the best albums of the time.......2006-01-29

Having grown up in England in the midst of the underground brit pop explosion i saw most of the bands of the era. Few, however, captured the mood of the time better the Ocean Colour Scene with moseley shoals. With additive riffs, gorgeous melodys and honest lyrics its not hard to see why. If your a fan of the brit pop of the 90's and bored of 'What's the story morning glory' then buy it. I guarantee you'll love it.

5 out of 5 stars Best Album I Have Ever Heard.......2005-11-19

I have listened to this album every day of my life ever since my Dad introduced it to me and I never get tired of it. Whereas Oasis' '(What's the Story?) Morning Glory gets credit for the best music of 1990's, and is a great album, the songs get boring after a while which is certainly not what Mosely Shoals does.
From the opening riff of The Riverboat Song I was instantly alert and wanted to hear more. The catchy chorus of The Day We Caught the Train comes second, with a great lead guitar helping hand from none other than Paul Weller in the fantastic The Circle. Lining Your Pockets calms the mood down a little, with great ballad vocals from Simon Fowler. Fleeting Mind has some great chords and a brilliant air of mystery about it, with 40 Past Midnight, a tune reminiscent of The Beatles, following it. One For The Road, probably one of the most underrated songs of this album, follows, and It's My Shadow is perhaps a mickey take on Oasis' Cast No Shadow? Policeman and Pirates has great lyrics which you can really be moved by, The Downstream has another amazing catchy chorus which you will be singing for days, and You've Got It Bads brilliant riff and the great lyrics of Get Away finish it off. A must have!

5 out of 5 stars Another Brit Rock Turnstile! .......2005-08-28

In 1996 I was just getting truly initiated into the British rock scene that was happening in the mid to late '90s. I was an enormous fan of the whole '60s British Invasion bands already and thought there just might be new life in music afterall when I became a fan of Blur a year earlier. I'll never forget the phone call from my best friend...."Matt you've gotta hear this new band from England...your gonna love this!" On my quest to find bands that had some sort of REAL sound connection to their influences, Ocean Colour Scene was an incredible discovery. My best bud let me borrow his copy.

It's a shame that OCS never got their due in America. "Mossley Shoals" is an incredible album from start to finish! The album went to no.1 in England and it's easy to hear why. This is a real talent, no poseing mix of the Animals, Beatles, Rolling Stones, Who, etc., etc., etc. But with all the throwback it's completely 1996 as well. The band gets a hand from noneother than the Ultimate '70s Mod himself Mr. Paul Weller. I can't say a whole lot about this record but that it's one of the best British rock records of the late 90s along with Oasis' "What's The Story.." and Blurs' "Parklife." Please listen to the samples of this album and become a fan yourself. It certainly brought me through the post-grunge period of the late '90s where the only thing teens wanted to hear was "Walkin On the Sun" by Smashmouth and "Fly" by Sugar Ray. It was good to know there were musicians out there that wanted to make real music the good old fashioned way.

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Forgotten debut album from the UK band Ocean Colour Scene.......2005-07-01

Sitting between 3 and a 3.5 star rating their self-titled debut album has been all but forgotten by the music buying public as an early 90's Stone Roses rip-off... it is far from that. During the start of the 90's Ocean Colour Scene were the hottest band in England according to the music press, sadly the album took too long to record and the press died down as they holed up to record their first release.

Once it finally hit shelves it was reviewed as bloated and nothing like the Ocean Colour Scene that were so talked about only a year or more before. It was deemed an over-produced album (4 songs produced by The Rolling Stones producer Jimmy Miller). Now with all this history behind them and 7 albums down the road how does this album fare on its own... without all the hype and just for what it is. It is a decent album, compared to everything else by the band it stands out on its own and has its own unique sound and feel... which is just so cool.

The first song ("Talk On") has only 4 lines of lyrics in it that are repeated over again (almost like the first song from the self-titled Stone Roses album... but that's all in terms of similarity). It has some great guitar playing going on all through it, feedback and wah-wah abound all over it with some almost indian style guitar melodies as the bass plays the vocal melody in a hypnotic way.

"How About You" is an up-beat song that features some little castanets rolling each verse, it also has a very catchy chorus too and sounds like the early stages of what Ocean Colour Scene eventually would turn into. Followed on by "Giving It All Away" driven by a sharp acoustic strum with layers of electric guitars and organs adding texture onto the strong lyrics with some high falsettos by a young Simon Fowler.

"Justine" has got to be one of the real highlights on this album, and also a style that they would never drop over the next 13 years. A sublime acoustic song that has a complimentary string section which just adds even more emotion to the song, especially when the strings play the solo. What a song!!!! I can see why it featured on a "Moseley Shoals" b-side. The album is worth parting with a few bucks for just because of this song as well as "Talk On", "Do Yourself A Favour" and "Sway".

So we have the albums only cover and a real great take on a Stevie Wonder song. "Do Yourself A Favour" rocks and boogaloos for 4 full minutes and they turn into something of their own. It blends in with the next song that just builds up from a semi-psychedelic haze into a huge sounding early epic, this is "Third Shade Of Green" with a big ending that drops off to the dreamscape of the start.

"Sway" was the big song from the album and used a lot to push it into the medias attention. It bears similar sounds to "Do Yourself A Favour" but just is better. Great feel good and positive lyrics with a huge guitar sound and cool little quiet break towards the middle, a perfectly crafted early 90's indie single.

We're taken through the reggae inspired "Penny Pinching Rainy Heaven Days" which is the song that could possibly be the most forgettable on this album. But "One Of Those Days" has a large sounding guitar riff and has only 2 verses of lyrics, but it takes nothing from the song as it has everything necessary to make a great album track that you actually don't mind hearing instead of all the big ones.

"Is She Coming Home" is an odd song by Ocean Colour Scene, the lyrical content is nothing like what Simon has wrote before or since, even the music is on the strange side for the band. One of those songs that in the big picture doesn't quite seem to fit, but has you thinking.

"Blue Deep Ocean" begins with soothing water and synth sounds then suddenly a cool bass guitar and percussion intro kicks in joined by guitar and then hypnotic multi vocals that you just want to lie back and relax to this lovely little song. Great bass groove and beats too with the again repetitive lyrical content. I actually really like this song and would call it the albums jewel. The final track simply titled "Reprise" is an instrumental, with flute and eastern flavoured guitar playing throughout that speeds up slowly and then fades.

Something worth getting for a take on early 90's British "baggy" music scene or even to hear a different sounding Ocean Colour Scene. But to those that haven't heard this, be warned... it is nothing like everything else by the band that came after this!!

4 out of 5 stars Way Back When..........2005-01-09

Ok, I admit this isn't the smoothest of OCS CDs but I still find it thoroughly enjoyable. It fits nicely into a little niche I like to call early 90s English alternative that ranges from indie to Manchester to shoegaze to early Britpop.

"Talk On" starts things off on a high note. My favorite track is next: "How About You". "Giving It All Away" is smooth, "Do Yourself a Favor" is punchy, "Sway" is plucky.

OCS power up their sound in their later releases, but this CD shouldn't be overlooked for its charms.

3 out of 5 stars Hoping for Something Different.......2003-08-04

I bought this album after listening to Is She Coming Home and hoped there were similar tracks. There are, but it is mostly early 90's indie rock. The band has changed their sound since. A lot of the music reminded me of Echo and the Bunnymen's style. It's a good listen, just not great.

4 out of 5 stars Wow, this is the first review.......2000-10-12

I'm kind of surprised no one else has reviewed this yet. I bought this CD from my local music store because they didn't have Moseley Shoals and I didn't want to walk away empty handed. You can certainly tell that it is the band's first album, as the songs are all too similar in flavor to each other. Nevertheless, it is almost as enjoyable as OCS's later music, and if you are a true fan of them, you should really have this one. For non-fans, this album is best described as a usually mellow, sometimes energized mix of the Beatles and Pink Floyd. And yet there are very few moments where their sound feels "borrowed". Ocean Colour Scene is the best rock band of this decade, and the least commercialized. So, the fact that you're reading this review is probably enough to warrant buying this CD.

While this anthology is a brilliant addition to any OCS fan's collection and an excellent introduction to new fans (even better than Songs for the Front Row, as it provides access to the band's often hard to find stellar b-sides), my complaint and withholding of one star is directed entirely at Amazon. The anthology is advertised in the write-up as including a third cd of bonus material, consisting of rare versions of songs and live performances. However, when I received my copy of the cd it excluded the bonus cd. I wrote to Amazon to complain, and after sending them my copy they sent me a new Anthology cd-- again without the bonus disc!! Clearly, it was a limited edition deal and Amazon cannot live up to delivering the goods. So, if you're looking for those cool rarities on the third cd, look elsewhere. If not, buy this for the amazing 40 songs that it does include.

4 out of 5 stars Another Hits Collection?.......2003-09-14

You can't fault the music on these cd's, the first disc are all 20 of their A-Sides. Not counting the acoustic version of "Circle (Outside Of A Circle)", or the Live versions of "July / I Am The News". The second disc is a run through of 20 B-Sides, with no overlap from 1997's B-Sides Seasides & Freerides. The third limited edition bonus disc is 36 minutes and 10 tracks of rarities and B-sides. There is also a nice booklet and slip-case, all together a great looking package.

So why no 5 stars... besides the fact that they just released a Very Best of 2 years ago, with most of the tracks from the first CD on it, it has to be the information in the booklet. There is no explanation of where any of the B-Sides come from or the rarities for that matter. Amazon's listing has better track information. And the other is the set really only has a couple of rarities. The B-Sides that are on the set are readily available from their most popular singles from 1995 on, only 4 are pre `92. I know it is not their best material, but it would be nice to have some songs that are hard to find. There is also nothing from their last album North Atlantic Drift.

Having whined for the last paragraph I can change my tune and say it is still Ocean Colour Scene. If you have only their full length CD's, a whole disc of great B-sides is a plus. And OSC almost always had great B-sides. "Robin Hood", "Song For The Front Row" and Buffalo Springfield's "On The Way Home" are just some of the highlights. If you know nothing about them they could fall in the same category as The Stereophonics, Oasis or Paul Weller.
