Album Description
Red Rock Records and Complex Corporation are proud to announce the release of the soundtrack CD of Off the Charts: The song Poem Story, the acclaimed documentary feature from director Jamie Meltzer.
The Soundtrack CD features liner notes written by Penn Jillete of Penn and Teller, contains songs from the film and fascinating snippets of dialogue sepearating the tracks.
Off the Charts: The Song Poem Story, which premiered in a national broadcast on PBS' Independent Lens series, is a feature-length documentary about the sometimes unsettling, but always fascinating, world of the song-poem industry. In this little-known subculture, ordinary people send in their heartfelt, but often bizarre, poems to companies that-for a fee-turn them into the full-fledged musical productions featured on the companion CD soundtrack.

Human Breakdown Of Absurdity.......2004-12-25
This is an amazing CD. I highly recommend watching the DVD from which these gems were pulled before listening. I also warn you not to listen to this while driving your car or operating heavy machinery.
I have been a fan of odd and outsider music since the late 1970s, and now there is a documentary explaining the wonders of the genre to everyone. I had actually heard many of these songs before, but here there are actually remakes of some of the originals by Gene Merlino and crew. I am especially fond of "The 23rd Channel" by Merlino, a religious song about television, "I am a Ginseng Digger" about, well, digging ginseng (I couldn't make this up), and the classic by Ramsey Kearney (which he apologized for in the film) which will remain nameless in this review for reasons of good taste, but will be extremely evident when you listen to the CD. I also love the David Fox stuff written by Caglar Juan Singletary, especially the ode to his super-bicycle, Angeleria, titled "Non-Violent Taekwondo Troopers." Singletary's "Annie Oakley" is also structurally very interesting; when I watched the DVD I felt very fond of him, he seems a bit odd and strange, but extremely sincere.
There are other outsider music CD's out there (check out Jim Nayder, "Songs in the Key of Z," and of course the original outsider divas, "The Shaggs," who Frank Zappa declared "better than the Beatles") but this CD and the companion DVD are thoughtfully made and really humanize the people making this music. Sure this isn't great music, but it really makes these people happy, and I defy anyone to listen to this CD and not smile, albeit with an occasional grimace, too. I highly recommend this CD and the companion DVD of the same title.

sounds old.......2005-11-18
when you first listen to the briefs, you would think that they are from the 70's or early 80's but you would be dead wrong because they are brand spank'n new. this is not my favorite briefs cd, i like hit after hit and sex objects better but this is still amazing so you should buy it or another cd by the briefs.

Ska Punk, questionably the best?.......2004-01-04
Ok, well, these boys from the northwest are the best punk meets ska band ive seen in a long time. I know my music, and this definately hits the spot of great music. Fans of Operation Ivy, Sublime, Bad brains, etc. will love this band. This is my first Briefs cd, but it lead me to buy their shirt, and patch.
Now to the music. Its real punk rock, but not hardcore stuff, with a little bit of ska, that blends in perfectly. Its dissapointing that there are no samples of this cd, but take my word, there are some great stuff on this cd. My personal fav song on this cd is Outer Space Don't Care About You, the 1st song; even though its only about a minute and 20 seconds long. Thats something to mention; this cd only runs about a shameful 25 minutes. But the cd has been recorded surpirsingly well, because its a cheap record company.
The price isnt bad, so i would give The Briefs a shot, if you like ska punk. I would also recommend getting this cd before the other briefs cds, to see if you like this one. Now dont think bad about this cd because its short, 'cause this is 1 of those cds, where you can listen to the whole cd, without skipping tracks.
