For their latest, Akron, Ohio duo The Black Keys have brought forth an EP of six songs by Junior Kimbrough. This is no mere dalliance; the late elder Mississippi blues musician was a powerful influence on guitarist Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney. Their three previous albums, full of dusty grooves and simple but impassioned dynamics, would have found strong rapport with Kimbrough, who unfortunately died before they could ever meet. However, his widow, Mildred gives her passionate endorsement for these performances in the form of a short phone message that appears at the end of the disc. Among the highpoints is "Meet Me in the City," which positively shimmers as the plaintive vocal soars over a virato-ed guitar. The Black Keys, besides paying their heartfelt respects, also demonstrate the breadth and durability of Kimbrough's music. --David Greenberger

5 out of 5 stars Undiscoverd gem.......2007-06-24

I heard about this on, of all places, NPR radio music review. I had never heard of the black keys before but decided to take a chance and I'm glad I did. I can't believe the sound just 'two' guys put out, it's awesome.

5 out of 5 stars The Big Pay Back.......2007-01-04

I'm very proud of the boys for putting this one out. It's a fitting tribute. Dan's love of Junior is real, and the result is a perfect blending of Junior and the Black Keys. If you ever spent a night at Junior's Juke Joint, in Chulahoma, then you know the meaning of psychadelic soul; and the boys captured that feeling perfectly. The music is primitive, hypnotic and sexual. If you want the same old, worn out 12 bar blues, don't buy this cd. If you want honest, raw and deeply felt blues, buy this cd, and another one by Junior himself. This music comes with the seal of approval from Junior's widow, Mildred. You can't get any higher praise than that. I have strong feelings about this one. I wish more musicians would try to pay back the elders who inspired them. Hat's off to Dan and Pat!!

4 out of 5 stars Love It: The reviews are right on the money.......2006-11-30

A nod to the insight of two other reviewers:

A) Ball and Biscuit is indeed far and away my favorite White Stripes song and I understand why the other reviewer makes that point in relation to the Black Keys.

B) In linking this intense-blues-groover to the Rolling Stones in their heyday, I would specifically point to I Just Want To See His Face, the fragmentary gospel-blues-from-the-jungle groove near the end of Exile On Main Street.

I have just started exploring the Black Keys lately on the recommendation of a friend and up to now, have very much liked but not fallen in love with this band. However, Chulahoma stopped me dead in my tracks and just knocked me out. This is such intense, grooving blues, elastic without being jammy, can't say enough about it. The vocals are mixed evenly with guitar and drums giving the effect of an album of near-insturmentals. This is a good thing.

If you are coming at this record from a rock and roll fan perspective, it will naturally lead you to the deep-blues of Junior Kimbrough. Thank you Black Keys and Thank you Junior Kimbrough.

5 out of 5 stars Reinvigorating.......2006-11-26

I would consider this relaxing. Not in the ambient, electronic sort of way; this is very much blues. It's a different kind of blues; trance blues, which is Junior Kimborough's (all of these are covers) stamp on the blues. My words can not begin to describe how much this EP means to me. It's study music, it's driving music, it's music to make love to.

Just get it.

3 out of 5 stars Good band...decent recording........2006-10-01

OK, well I don't normally write Amazon reviews but this one needs it. OK, first off I am a Black Keys fan, although I only own their debut The Big Come Up. I really enjoy that album. This one seemed to me to be a similar endeavor to their aforementioned album. Needless to say I thought it would be a nice little addition to my music collection...

Well, I pop it in to discover that the first 3 songs I can barely make out Dan's lyrics. The last 3 songs are a little better in that regard but it put a damper on the whole album.

Another thing which is more of a pet peeve of mine is "blues" music that isn't 12 bar blues, much like this albums songs. The songs presented here just seem like a never-ending riff, and there doesn't seem to be any structure to them. Maybe that's the way Junior did it, I'm not familiar with his work. Anyway, I wouldn't recommend this album, however I would recommend The Big Come Up if you don't already have it and are wondering what The Black Keys are all about.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2007-03-02

That's all I have to say...AWESOME This CD makes me want God more and more every time I hear it.

5 out of 5 stars Spiritually Uplifting.......2006-11-10

I found this CD to be spiritually uplifting. You will find yourself listening to this CD repetitively as the lyrics minister to your spirit. If you try Vol. 1, then you must also listen to Vol. 2. What a joy to hear songs the "old time way."

5 out of 5 stars I really enjoyed it!.......2006-03-12

This CD blessed my soul as I heard Bishop Patterson and others going forth in song. I purchased one for us and sent a copy to
our daughter in Missouri.

4 out of 5 stars Lots of energy, but flawed live performance.......2006-03-02

This is a really energizing recording, but it has many of the flaws that come naturally from a live recording of a worship service. Bishop Patterson was so hoarse (allergies, sung out, whatever), that he can barely get his voice to sound in a couple of places. Also, like many gospel recordings, there are several "call and response" interactions between the soloist and the choir, but the choir isn't miked, and I don't know what they are singing.

A couple of the soloists (other than Bishop Patterson) seem to have limited range, and some have pitch problems (perhaps they couldn't hear the monitor).

My least favorite tracks were the glacially slow and rhythm-free renditions of some old choruses. So slow, in fact, that you have no idea when they're going to start the next phrase.

My favorite track is "My Record Will Be There", which is simply the chorus of an old hymn set to 12-bar blues. But the original melody is lost completely, and the words are just the chorus sung through twice. I miss the words to the old time hymns. Especially when, like in this case, where the 5th verse is the only one that talks about grace and forgiveness.

Theologically, my impression is that the songs on this album are much more about judgment and condemnation than with grace. There's a lot about my record being there when I go before the judgment bar, and about how you can't get to heaven while you're sippin' on gin. I wish there was more focus on what will get you into heaven than what will keep you out. Overemphasis on wrong living gives the impression that you can get to heaven by good works.

Having said all that, it was worth the price of admission to get one track of Christian 12-bar blues.

5 out of 5 stars Great Praise for my Presiding Bishop!.......2006-02-08

This is the music of yesterday that is what we need to carry us through today!! What an inspiration to hear the voice of my Presiding Bishop bringing us back to "the old time way". Most of these songs were here before I got here, but how well do I remember my grandmother, the church mothers, and the saints striking out and going forth in these songs of praise! They sang until the anointing fell and it didn't take long to fall!!! Thank you Bishop for sharing this music with the world and to all who is trying to decide on this cd, well there is just no way you can go wrong with this one if you truly love the Lord. Shout out to my own jurisdictional Bishop, Bishop Robert R. Sanders... Third Jurisdiction of Illinois!!!

1 out of 5 stars Stephen Foster.......2007-05-13

I saw a program on OPB about him so I got this. But, I didn't like it and don't listen to it. It is now under my bed collecting dust.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific choral renditions.......2006-01-27

I own this CD and am especially fond of it for the solos by Thomas Pyle and Clayton Krehbiel, particularly the latter's singing of "I Want to Die Easy." All other soloists and choristers are equally superb, but those two gentlemen, sadly since deceased, were personal acquaintances and musical influences. If you don't have a taste for great choral arrangements, then pass, but you'll be missing out on something special. Enjoy it, you who adore the finest.

1 out of 5 stars Make the exquisite into the mundane.......2004-07-21

Oh, puleeze, this is the sappiest rendition of these gorgeous songs ever recorded, right up there with sing-a-long with Mitch Miller.

I always hate when songs that are meant to be sung intimately as solos or duets are done by 7,000 harmonized voices.

I recommend this recording only to be listened to in a nice comfortable elevator

5 out of 5 stars Great Drinking Music!.......2002-07-20

This CD Kicks ...! BR>The trombone riff in "Camptown Races" is incredible. The screaming axe in "Oh! Susanna" is mind-blowing. The fantastic jamming on this CD reminds me of HMTT. This CD is one monster hit after another. "Steal Away To Jesus", is a real kicker, although not quite as good as "Will You F'n Give Me Jesus".......

Just sit back, pop a cold one, maybe a whiskey shooter , pop this
baby on the victrolla and enjoy.......

Here's to ya Hawks...........

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite CDs.......2000-08-09

This is one of the best recordings of historic American music that I have heard, along with Joel Cohen's "Liberty Tree." The arrangements and interpretations of the songs are very beautiful. Some of the banjos are cheesy, but it is much much better than every other Foster recordings that I have heard. If you are in the mood to hear great music of Antebellum America, than I highly recommend this CD to you. You won't regret it!

Album Description

The fifth album from this revered Norwegian black metal act which features the talents of Galder and Nicholas Barker of Dimmu Borgir. 9 tracks. Century Media. 2003.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars It doesn't get much better than this.......2006-12-06

In 2003, three years after Old Man's Child's last album and two years after Dimmu Borgir's latest, Galder returned with two new discs (the sixth C.D. from his side project, OMC's "In Defiance Of Existence," and Dimmu Borgir's "Death Cult Armageddon"). As on other Old Man's Child releases, Galder handled nearly every instrument on this album: second guitar, vocals, bass guitar, and synthesizers. But he is, unexpectedly, not the only one on here who really gets to show off his talents: Dimmu Borgir/Cradle Of Filth/Benediction alumni Nicholas Barker (who had been hired to pound the skins on this album), goes completely nuts, beating the stuffing out of his trapkit, and driving most of these rhythms with remarkable, fast, thumping blast beats.

Like all great melodic black metal, "In Defiance Of Existence" has several pretty, tranquil parts, but it's first and foremost brutal. The heavy parts feature Galder spewing his venomous, kind of snarly vocals over cold, opaque soundscapes of fiery guitars and ultra fast double kick drumming.

But this album also has a lot of great, very refined texture and variety because several of these songs subtly slip in a touch of moody keyboards and/or acoustic guitars. And OMC aren't like some dark metal bands who either make a song completely melodic or completely heavy (with no middle ground), because many of these tracks, like "Agony Of Fallen Grace" (which has a walloping, machine gun rhythm but also includes some spacey synths), are brutal and ambient at the same time.

The record's best song might be "Black Seeds On Virgin Soil." After a melodic intro, a surging, whiplash onslaught made up of a hurricane of guitar riffs and extremely busy double bass work bursts onto the scene. Similarly, "The Soul Receiver" begins with the sounds of a symphony, but then catapults into a heavily churning, pummeling rhythm. Track seven, "In Quest Of Enigmatic Dreams," is an interlude consisting of a very pretty string arrangement, but the album goes out with a bang: "The Underworld Domains" and "Life Deprived" are both scorchers, bursting with thrashy, scalding riffs and ultra-fast, skull-cracking blast beats.

It's a shame that Dimmu's "Death Cult Armageddon" and "In Defiance Of Existence" came out the same year because when someone releases an album from both of his projects, the side project will probably always be overshadowed by the main one. Thus this disc is sometimes overlooked due to DB's bigger, wider selling, and all around better release. But, regardless, OMC is as good as any melodic/symphonic black metal group on the market today, and "IDOE" is easily one of the genre's finest releases of the past several years.

5 out of 5 stars Absolute Brilliance.......2006-06-24

In Defiance of Existence is truly a landmark black metal album. As a black metal fan of over ten years now, it is an album that absolutely stands out as one of the best I have ever heard. Galder is an absolute genius and the addition of Nicholas Barker on drums completes the potential of an concept that is completely realized if not surpassed. Every song is amazing. It does not get any better. I have always marveled at how Galder nearly alone can outdo the whole of Dimmu Borgir but that is just what he does. This album is the best that OMC has ever done and is completely amazing. An absolute triumph and an essential part of any black metal fan's collection.

5 out of 5 stars maybe their best.......2006-04-08

This is one awsome cd. It might end up being my favorite OMC cd. Only time will tell if thats the case. Either way Galder delivers again. Nick barker ex Dimmu,ex Cradle is the new drummer and does a great job blasting the skins for OMC.
Felonies Of The Christian Art- 8.4 Fantastic opening song. Its a typical OMC song done well. I particularly enjoy the swirling soloing between 3:14 and 3:40. Although the rest of the song is just as good.
Agony Of Fallen Grace-10+ It gets a 10+ because it might be my favorite OMC song ever. Although it does have much competition. The guitar section between 1:20 and 1:37 is especially noteworthy. It encompasses such emotion and sorrow yet beauty and grace as well. Thank god it shows up again toward the end of the song although it could have probably been made into an entire song itself. Also the drums of Nick Barker bring this song to life with a fury I havent felt in earlier OMC cds.
Black Seeds On Virgin Soil-8.2 Not as good as the previous two but hardly a letdown. OMC just dont have any filler songs. Everything has its own place on the cd. This starts out with some acoustic guitar but than bust loose into black metal intensity. Good variety of guitar in this song.
In Defiance Of Existence- 8.7 It opens with guitars and drums that evoke images of splashing waves on rocky norwegian fjords. Than Nick kicks a$$ with some double bass. Overall many fine riffs, melodies and blastbeats.
Sacrifice Of Vengeance- 9 Dont let the tranquill accoustic opening fool you. This is OMc not John Denver. 20 seconds in the riffs begin with a vengence. Nicks Drums are so good you can almost feel his sticks stinging your flesh. Thats a small sacrifice to pay to have the hellish pleasure of hearing this viking vengence. At 3:27 to 3:50 there is a magnificant seering, squawking sounding solo that blows my mind away.
The Soul Receiver 10 Awsome. Reminds me of old Dimmu. This experiance is all about the melody and the melody is good. This is a fitting anthem to the raping, pilaging reapers that once were the terrors of northern europe. Hail the vikings!
In Quest Of Enigmatic Dreams-7.5 Even the vikings needed some tranquility I guess. Pretty acoustic interlude.
The Underworld Domains-9 If in quest of enigmatic dreams was tranquil than this is a nightmare. Maybe the hardest song here or maybe not. Either way this is the underworld so what do you expect.
Life Deprived-9.5 The drums are so cool on this one combined with the buzzsaw riffs and some well placed solos. I get this mechanical impression with this one. Very hard song. A violent end yes, but what do you expect with a title like In defiance of Existance.

5 out of 5 stars now this album rocks!!.......2006-03-06

muuuch better than Vermin...alot better... thats all i have to say on that subject. there was so much intensity and originality in this album you wouldnt have thought that galder was in Dimmu...unlike Vermin... barker is a great drummer yes, but stands nowhere neer the god himself...Hellhammer... i recommend this album to any melodic bm fan as well as any metal fan in general

5 out of 5 stars KICK ASS.......2005-08-18

PURELY AN AMAZING BLACK METAL CD. MY FAVORITE SONGS ARE"BLACK SEEDS ON VIRGIN SOIL" "SACRIFICE OF VENGENCE" "THE SOUL DECEIVER" AND "FELONIES OF THE CHRISTAIN ART." ITS GREAT.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Excellent intro to Foster and Sousa.......2007-02-25

This is a tremendous value considering the price and the number of tracks that you get. The renditions are not bad, but I have heard better Foster. There is a lot of narration, which makes this a great teaching tool to introduce Foster and Sousa. The narration is a bit more for Foster than Sousa. Some of the Foster songs seem to be cut a little short, giving you what is really more of a sampler than a rich collection of complete Foster songs. The Sousa marches seem to be a little longer and don't have quite as much narration. Even though both men were well known American composers, their type of music was quite different, so it's kind of an odd paring on this album. It's a pleasant listen, but not a "must have" item unless you don't have much Foster or Sousa in your music collection; it's a good starter album. Great for kids who might be interested in learning about these two famous composers.

5 out of 5 stars march review.......2001-05-10

this cd gas a great selection of music on it. the sound of the music is perfectly clear and i definately reccomend it. it is an ideal disc for all march fans. two of the greatest american composers on one disc. this is also a great deal considering the amount of songs on this disc. definately but this cd.

5 out of 5 stars Singing the Old Time Way 2 .......2007-05-14

Singing the Old Time Way Volume 2 is a excellent CD to own. It takes you back to old time church and letting God have his way in your life. It makes you want to praise and worship God everytime you listen to it! Bishop Patterson sure did sang these songs full of the anointing in the Holy Ghost. Its very sad that honroable Bishop Patterson has gone home to be with the Lord. But my soul rejoices when I hear him sing these old songs because I know he's alright, because he is with the Lord!

5 out of 5 stars Best CD ever!.......2006-11-15

I am COGIC,and bought this CD because, I love my Bishop. This CD has brought all to my rememberence. Sinners can be saved, backsiders reclaimed and saints revived, listening to this CD. The anoiting is that strong!!!This is an awesome CD!!!

5 out of 5 stars Another Gem!!.......2006-06-13

I have Singing the Old Time Way, Volume 1, and it took me back to the church singing of my childhood. What a wonderful Volume 2. I was shouting at home all by myself!!

5 out of 5 stars Tamborine Player . . . you are officially retired!.......2006-05-15

WOW what a nice CD! I love the live sound and feel - just like the old time way! At times I feel like I'm sitting on the front row! However the tamborine player is either sitting in the back of the auditorium and can't hear -or- just can't keep up with the tempo of the song(s).

It's refreshing to hear songs that have substance - not just a grooving beat - like the 1979 Cutlass that just rolled by your house with his stereo bumpin and bass-a-thumpin!

5 out of 5 stars God will make a way.......2006-04-12

Singing the Old Time Way 2 is beautiful. It can be used for praise and worship.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Doc & Merle Watson.......2007-03-08

This repackaging of classic cuts just before Merle's death has excellent sound quality, with Doc at his musical peak. Mark O'Connor fiddle backup is awesome. Some of the most important Doc songs, a great example of an American legend.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding bluegrass.......2007-01-04

This is an excellent CD of music by a phenomenal bluegrass musician and his equally good son. Great CD for any bluegrass lover's library.

5 out of 5 stars Doc Watson Is a Musical Treasure.......2006-10-31

This is the companion album to 2004's SITTIN' HERE PICKIN' THE BLUES. That album expanded 1985's PICKIN' THE BLUES by adding a handful of tracks from RED ROCKING CHAIR (1981) and DOC AND MERLE WATSON'S GUITAR ALBUM (1983). All three of those albums were from Doc's association with the Flying Fish Label.

Now, two years later, Rounder puts out BLACK MOUNTAIN RAG, which includes the remaining eight tracks from RED ROCKING CHAIR and the remaining 9 tracks from GUITAR ALBUM. In addition, there are two tracks ("Leaving London" and "Bye Bye Bluebelle/Smiles") from the 1996 compilation WATSON COUNTRY, as well as "Blackberry Blossom" from 1990's NORMAN BLAKE & TONY RICE 2.

Quite simply, Doc Watson is one of the best flat-pick guitarists--period. And his son Merle (who tragically died in 1985) is an equally talented guitarist, especially his slide guitar playing. I was first introduced to Doc Watson on the Dirt Band's WILL THE CIRCLE BE UNBROKEN and have been a fan ever since. Doc is incapable of putting out a bad album, and his albums for the Flying Fish label in the early Eighties are all excellent. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

5 out of 5 stars An excellent cd overall.......2006-10-19

"Smoke, smoke, smoke that cigarette. Puff, puff, puff, but if you smoke yourself to death tell St. Peter at the golden gate that you hates to make him wait, but you just gotta have another cigarette."
- Smoke, Smoke, Smoke, Track 2

Just recently got this album, and am only just beginning to appreciate it. The guitars are all very crisp, and the other instruments compliment the simple old-time and bluegrass tunes nicely. An extremely wide variety of tunes, all of which are masterfully played by the contributing musicians. Particular tracks to look for are "Smoke, Smoke, Smoke", "Below Freezing", and "Gonna Lay Down My Old Guitar", the last of which has a particularly interesting chord progression, making interesting use of a diminished chord to make for a curious but well-chosen closer. Black Mountain Rag deserves my stars for having strong performances all around and moreover, for being a well-mixed final product.

Album Description

Norway's Old Man's Child is fronted by DIMMU BORGIR member Galder. You've been waiting over 2 years for this black metal masterpiece!!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars strange name for a metal band..........2007-04-22

...or should I say metal star, but he definitely knows how to rock. OMC is largely a one-man operation nowadays and Galder shows some versatility on this album. in fact, he does the guitar, bass, and keyboard arrangements and one of his Dimmu Borgir bandmates, Reno Killerich, plays the drums. Testament guitarist Eric Peterson also lends a hand. I hope Old Man's Child comes out with a new album sometime soon.

4 out of 5 stars Good.......2007-01-05

Very, very close to Dimmu Borgir... naturally. 3rd and 8th track take the cake. Others very nicely composed. Sounds somewhat borderline of traditional black metal and neo-black metal style. Some songs boast some ripping guitar rythems and solos. Drums sounded typical of any black metal. The keyboards add a nice atmosphere in some tracks, though they are not over played in any 1 track. This CD would likely be enjoyed by any typicaly BM fan.

5 out of 5 stars The only high profile black metal release of 2005!!.......2006-07-27

Honestly with only one black metal release in 2005 by this great band i can say that it has left me hungry for more. I've been into Old Man's Child and Dimmu Borgir for quite a while now and i like both of their styles. Old Man's Child to Galder is what Iron Savior is to Kai Hansen. They both have their own full time bands but enjoy creating their own stuff with their 'side' projects.

Anyway onto the album. I must say it is fantastic! The first 3 songs 'Enslaved and COndemned', 'The Plague of Sorrow' and 'War of Fidelity' are absolutely killer black metal songs. 'In Tormentor's Orbit' is the longest song on the album and has a nice keyboard section that relieves the fast pace for a bit. 'The Flames of Deceit' and 'Black Marvels of Death' are great songs to with buzzsaw-like riffs. Personally i don't like 'Lord of Command' as much as the other songs. 'Twilight Damnation' is a great song with some more synths present.

Throughout the album there are sprinkles of acoustic guitars to add some melody to the album. The lyrics on this album are VERY well written and mainly address the bitterness towards humanity most black metalists share. The artwork on this album is exquisite and very dark and sinister. The majority of instruments are played by Galder and the music and lyrics written by him so he has a lot of praise from me!! It takes a creative mind to do all that. Galder's voice is is very likable and won't make you cringe like that incessant squealing of Dani Filth's pig-being-raped voice, it's a straight-out black metal rasp and quite deep. The drumming is also top knotch and contributed by Reno Kiilerich who i believe is one of the fastest drummers in the world-- hitting 800 beats a minute or so! If you like Nick Barker (who is fantastic IMO) you'll like the drumming present here. Complex, loud and thudding!

Overall if you are an Old Man's Child fan you will definetly like this album. But if you also like some black metal with sprinkles of melody this is also for you. I bought this album straight away when i saw it and my confidence in it is still high. So i recommend it to you. Hope that was helpful!

4 out of 5 stars Awsome music. Just not as great as other OMC.......2006-05-27

I really hate to give this cd less that a 5 star rating. The reason I did is to distinguish it from the other OMC 5 star ratings that I wrote. Having said that I think this is top notch metal of any kind. Just not on the great level that Ill natured, and Revalations 666 are.
Enslaved and Condemned 9 For many bands on many cds this would be the best song. It begins with a creepy acoustic melody. This song doesnt have the keyboard melodies that OMC would have had in the past. The melody here is primarily from guitar. Mostly this song is about getting attacked by Galders guitar. Their is a good mix of thrashy death metal riffs, and earsplitting solos. As well as the aforementioned accoustic intro.
The Plague of Sorrow 9.5 This one starts with a brief fuzzy noisy intro. Almost industrial, but than the riffs smash on. There is more keyboard in this song than the last one. This song has a definant Death Cult Armegeddon influence. Sounds dark enough for my lost and twisted soul.
War of Fidelity 9.5 Starts with a tattering drum beat and than the guitars slide on in. Plenty of buzzing riffs and blast beats followed by some amazing keys. The rest of the song is a splattering of crunching riffs and amazing solos.
In Torment's Orbit 8 Another good song. Not as good as the last three, but definantly worth your attention. It just doesnt strike me as being outstanding like the other songs. If I had to name my favorite parts I would say that the keyboard at 2:25 is great, and I really like the closing riffs that begin around 4:25.
Lord of Command (Bringer of Hate) 9.5 The opening is an awsome keyboard melody. Sounds like something that should have been on Ill Natured. About 2:23 an even better keyboard piece. It has a magical evil sound. It practically makes your room grow colder. Other than that there are plenty of good riffs as usual.
The Flames of Deceit 8 Very good song. Just not as good as some of the other songs. Favorite part is 1:37-2:00. That is great guitar. The problem is that it is really familiar and I am sure that I have heard it somewhere before. Although Galder is too great to rip someone off. He doesnt need to. Oh well it is probably in my head. That wouldnt be the first time I hallucinated.
Black Marvels of Death 10 Great song. From accoustic intro to the heavy drumms in the end.I wish it was longer. Or I just put it on repeat and that is good enough I guess. Very dreamy keyboards in the background.
Twilight Damnation 10 Even better than the last one if you can believe it. The guitars sound a little like Iron Maiden I think. Actually this song sounds similar to old Cradle of Filth before they sold there souls to MTV. Perfect song. This is my favorite on here.
...As Evil Descends 7.5 Thats evil alright. Very ominous instrumental outro.
Anyways this is a another great addition to the legendary Old Man's Child catalogue. No dissapointments. Go out and buy this cd or die!

2 out of 5 stars 2 1/2...Feels to Industial.......2006-05-09

I love Black Metal, and I belive the old school stuff is the best. After experimenting with bands such as Darkthrone and Mayham, I decided to give Old Mans Child a try. Hmmmm..I wasnt as pleased as I thought I was going to be. This album gets a lot of high praise, but they sound just like Cradle of Filth, but I belive Cradle of Filth is much better. Even though COF seems to get bashed for being to mainstream, I think this sounds mainstream for being called "Black Metal" . In fact there are only 2 songs that sound like true Black Metal, and the rest just seems a bit to overdone and to industrial. Its an Ok album, but if you want "True" Black Metal try Darkthrone, Mayham, Venom, and I even recomend Cradle of Filth, as they are way better musicans.

3 out of 5 stars Buy it at a discount if you can, O Hesitant Connells Fan of Yore.......2006-10-26

Fandom can blind folks from hearing new music by a favorite band. So can hipsterhood. But I digress.

The short of it:
Anyone looking to start a Connells collection should start elsewhere. Probably with "Ring", or maybe "Fun & Games".

Any old-time fan should get this album, even though it's a bit weak, because of the few shining moments it does have.

The longer of it:
The biggest problem with this album that i haven't seen mentioned in reviews is this: something is wrong with the vocals. as a recording engineer and songwriter myself, i know the sound of a "you've got a better one in you" vocal take. and, quite simply, for whatever reason, there are a bunch of songs like that on this album. i'm all for spontenaity and a loose vibe, but doug mcmillan simply should have re-sung many of his parts on this album. The lackluster and sometimes pitchy takes they use really drag down what could (possibly) be decent songs into the murk.

I have no problem with the production other than that. Guitars are nice and crunchy, you can hear what each player is playing. Their long-time drummer is gone and replaced with 2 other guys (not at the same time). The other members are the same, they've still got that keyboard player, too.

I first got into these guys when a friend gave me a cassette of Boylan Heights and Fun & Games, so it was exciting to watch their mini-breakthrough with One Simple Word. Despite the lack of "big" success, I'm glad they hung around so long and I got a chance to go see 'em in concert a few times when they came to my town, and that I had the chance to stand a few yards from the stage and trade the occasional smirk with Huntley and McMillan. I think ALL of their albums have SOMETHING to recommend them (although the debut Darker Days is a band still finding their sea legs). This one though only has 4 tracks that stand out for me, and if i had to do it all over again i'd find those tracks at itunes or something [Bust, Back in Blighty (rivals "Burden" for best Mike Connell-sung song), Airlift (why only one song, Mr. Huntley?) and the morose The Bottom], and avoid the bad taste of some of the other poorly-sung tracks.

Was Doug sick, or not interested, or distracted? Was the producer/engineer lazy? Oh come let us smirk together and tell stories of the studio!

It's been a few years since this album, though, and I hope it's not their last.

4 out of 5 stars Great Garage Sound.......2005-03-18

I finally got this CD, after having it on my wish list for years. The thing about the Connells is that the music is their thing. This album is no different. Great vocals, trademark riffs... The song "Rusted Fields" is as good as anything they've ever done. There is always a sense that they are holding back a little. But in my opinion, "Ring" was one of the best CDs of the '90s, and anything compared to that effort seems forced. Great group, great college band, and in the way they respect their craft, a cultural peer to Wilco, REM, and the Jayhawks. It's the music, not the hype.

2 out of 5 stars Love the Connells, but please, this is just Bad.......2004-03-27

All the glowing reviews for what is basically a horrible CD are simply a true testament to the power the Connells have over their loyal fans. These guys, at the best, were awesome songwriters and are my favorite live band. However, this album is just terrible. I bought it when released, TRIED to like it and finally trashed it. Eevn Weird Food was better than this, and they have never done better than Fun & Games. I hope they are still together - and can get the drummer back who did quit - so they can end on a brighter note than this dismal piece of crap.

5 out of 5 stars Correction!.......2004-02-02

This is not really a review but a correction to Popkulcher's review. The Connells have NOT broken up! True, touring has taken a backseat to families and dayjobs, but the Connells are still making music and playing the occasional local or regional show. In fact, they are working on material for a new album! So don't give up on The Connells just yet.

5 out of 5 stars Great, great music -> masterpiece!.......2003-11-13

I was trying for nearly two years to find this LP in Germany, and when I finally purchased it from the UK, I immediately knew it was worth the efforts. This is simply great music, and it sounds far more authentic and honest than their last LP "Still Life". Surely, the sound quality could be better, but as far as I'm concerned, I don't care so much about that as long as the songs are so touching. This is in many ways one of the best Connells albums.

Holiday blues comin' on? Well, put a spike in `em! Here's the zaniest, wildest and just plain sickest Collectors' Choice Music exclusive yet—79 tracks from Spike Jones and his City Slickers! These represent Spike's complete Standard Transcription sides, but these tunes are anything but standard; Mr. Jones brought his full bag of tricks for these non-commercial recordings (made in Hollywood during the early `40s). Add to that the fact that most of these have never been on CD or even LP, and any lover of Spike's mayhem-filled mixture of laughs and hot licks is going to flip over this set! Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great set of wartime rarities.......2003-05-14

Spike Jones was the king of the novelty song performers, with hits like "Der Fuehrer's Face" and the parody version of "Sheik of Araby" becoming huge hits during World War II. This is a swell 3-CD set, gathering a full eighty-one of Jones' best tracks from his 1940s heyday, drawn from an extensive archive of radio broadcasts made for the Standard Transcription service. The tightness of his City Slickers band is amply demonstrated in these manic, kookily orchestrated performances. Toots, squonks, blatts and bleats whiz by at lightning speed, as one daffy song after another will delight devoted fans. Amazingly, Jones had the unusual, almost unique ability to perform a repertoire almost entirely made up of comedic material, and yet still be quite listenable and engaging. His jazz chops were hardly in question, and from time to time Jones would dash off a non-novelty ballad or two, just to give the rubes something to think about. Of course, just as often he would perform a song that *sounded* like a straight ballad, but would turn out to be another goof. (One great example of this is the sultry "Serenade To A Jerk," sung in slinky, burlesque tones by Myrtle Horwin.) This collection may seem a little overwhelming, but like his studio recordings, these radio performances have a certain brilliance and joie de vivre about them that will leave you enchanted. Definitely worth checking out!

This collection has remastered material from the large stack of Standard Transcription discs from the early 1940's. There are many songs not recorded on RCA, many on the theme of wartime ("48 Reasons Why"), and the quality is excellent. The packaging is threadbare but this is an essential CD package for true music lovers.
