Even those allergic to musicals may be won over by Once, a tender-hearted Irish romance with songs by Czech Republic-born Markéta Irglová and Frames frontman Glen Hansard. (The film's director, John Carney, actually used to play bass in the group.) The trick here is that Irglová and Hansard also play the leads; because their characters are shown busking, writing music, or rehearsing, the songs are smoothly integrated in the film. The overall acoustic mood won't surprise fans of the Frames--some tracks ("Say It to Me," "When Your Mind's Made Up") have even popped up on the band's albums, though the arrangements are more pared-down here, befitting the scruffy, street-musician setting. Being the lesser-known entity, Irglová feels like a revelation; she sounds a bit like a folkie Björk on "If You Want Me," and her song "The Hill" is downright heartbreaking. Irglová and Hansard had already made the 2006 album The Swell Seasontogether, so their collaboration here feels really organic--they sound particularly good together on the title track, for instance. Now that's the kind of magic you want from musicals. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Once.......2007-07-13
I saw the movie and immediately ordered the soundtrack. I play it all the time. The music is great and the CD well balanced. I can't wait for the DVD.
Best film score of the year.........2007-07-12
I agree with the critics that this lovely movie has the best music of any film in years.
Once.......2007-07-12
This CD captures the beauty and power of the songs from the movie. I still get goosebumps when I listen to Say It To Me Know and When Your Mind's Made Up. You will not be disappointed by purchasing this soundtrack.
Amazing Film Amazing Songs.......2007-07-12
Once you see the film "Once" the music will stay in your head for days. The soundtrack captures the magic of the film and the music is 85% of the story. Wonderful music.
Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova Are Spectacular.......2007-07-07
After seeing the movie Once and being haunted by its beautiful, lyrical music, I had to buy the CD. The songs are simple, yet powerful, with folk and ballad undercurrents. Once is my favorite CD purchase of the year. Thank you Glen and Marketa for listenng to your muses!

It takes guts, if not outright egomania, to abandon your given surname and adopt a loaded one like Legend, but the former John Stephens must have sensed that loftiness would one day be his calling card: Once Again, the follow-up to the Grammy-gobbling, platinum pile-on that was Get Lifted, surpasses expectations. Not that it bears much relation to its predecessor. Again again trots out a stable of talented, modern-minded producers--Raphael Saadiq, Legend comrade Kanye West, and the unsinkable will.i.am--but it's nowhere near as self-conscious about embracing the old-school as the knowing, R&B edge-skimming Lifted. Don't expect a derivative mash of smudgy, nostalgia-filching sounds, though, because despite its retro leanings, what's in store somehow crackles with currency. Call it neo-retro if you must, but never call it unimaginative: first single "Save Room" coasts, drifts, and floats along a ponderous path spiked by a cool keyboard-y crescendo; second single "Heaven" busts out a big, busy beat over a slow seduction; and a couple of selections--"Each Day Gets Better" and "PDA"--are so bright and twirly they seem custom-made for dizzy love scenes or jaunty, sunny-day skips through the park. Maybe the most unusual track is "Show Me," a rock song that pilfers elements of Hendrix and finds Legend climbing a few octaves to sound, weirdly, like Jeff Buckley, but it works: so slippery is its beat and so affecting are its hope-laced lyrics that, oddness aside, it's among the disc's best. Sandwiched as it is among 14 songs that all sound like future classics, that's saying something. --Tammy La Gorce

Once Again - John Legend.......2007-07-08
The title song is teriffic and one you will want to hear over & over & over again.
Legend does it - "Once Again".......2007-07-07
Calll it what you will - jazz, crossover, blues fusion - the cuts work and work well. His "Save Room" in particular adds a quiet energy to his body of work and the rest of the album is just as strong. There is depth here, there is thought here, there is music here.
this is a big downstep.......2007-06-24
john legend dissappointed me....this is a not a good album compared to the first one.....maybe 2 tracks are worth buying it...
"Old School" Yeah Right.......2007-06-22
John legend first cd "Get lifted" was a joy to listen to. His second cd "Once again" is "Once is enough already"!. He sounds straned and annoying. The lyrics are not well written, more like very immature. He tries way to hard and you can hear it in his voice. These R&B acts are losing a lot of fans by making stupid music like this and expect us to "Like this crap". All they care about is getting paid. If you want to hear real R&B with raw lyrics listen to Amy winehouse or Corinne Bailey Rae. The difference between R&B Brits and american fake R&B, they sing with emotion, write meaningful lyrics and have great Vocals. American R&B is only in it for our cash and make awful music with no substance. As long as we keep buying music like this. They will continue to make trashy music like this.
Fabulous!!!.......2007-05-17
Very different from his first album, but still exceptional. I think it's a definite suprise for JL fans, but truly enjoyable. Favourite is Another Again!!!

Ennio Morricone is well-known to moviegoers. His soundtracks for The Mission, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, Once Upon a Time in America, Cinema Paradiso, and others are invariably warmly melodic and superbly suited to the films they grace. They not only add atmosphere; they help tell the story. For this CD Morricone has created new orchestrations for many of his scores, adding a solo cello part for the indefatigable Yo-Yo Ma, whose musical curiosity seems to be endless. Outside the films, these pieces tend to be lovely melodies, mostly pretty sentimental stuff, and, in the best way, gorgeous aural wallpaper. The most moving are the two selections from The Mission, but fans of Morricone's music will find plenty to enjoy here. Ma's playing, as always, is exquisite---warm, deeply felt (given the circumstances), and entirely idiomatic within the context. Perhaps not quite for the classical music lover, but an affectionate reworking of music by an important film composer. --Robert Levine
Customer Reviews:
Is it bad to say I like this better than the original soundtrack?.......2007-06-02
I never thought Yo-Yo Ma would do Gabriel's Oboe (Track 1) from THE MISSION justice, but I was wrong. There's a pureness to this version that makes it easier casual listening than the version(s) on the soundtrack CD itself. So no matter how much I love the theatrical "largeness" of the Original Soundtrack (not to mention the full choir), this is the version I grab for the CD player/iPod/whatever.
My two other recommendations are Main Theme from ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST (Track 11) and Ecstasy of Gold from THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY (Track 12). I suggest playing these consecutively as a single medley. Track 11 *WILL* bring tears to the manliest among us --particularly if you remember in the movie where Sergio Leone pulls the camera up to reveal the town rising.
I get the feeling "hardcore" classical fans would dismiss movie scores as commercial work. I truly believe Ennio Morricone transcends that. Even moreso than, say, John Williams, and on a different plane than a Danny Elfman. And I can't say more about the emotion Yo-Yo Ma brings to the table than what's already been discussed.
Absolutely Exquisite.......2007-05-15
The combination of Morricone and Ma is pure perfection. This CD fills my heart with so much joy that I could just cry. I listen to it almost daily and have given it away as a gift to my loved ones. I am captivated by their incredible talents, and I know you will be too.
Yo Yo Ma and the Maestro Marvelous!!!.......2007-05-13
Having recently succumbed to Yo Yo Ma after a longtime love of Ennio Marricone I was excited to get this CD from Amazon. It is superb! All of the songs had to be recrafted by Morricone to suit Yo Yo Ma but it is a great listen as you sonically travel down memory lane through some of Maestro Moricone's musical marvels. "Gabriel's Oboe" from "The Mission" now becomes "Gabriel's Cello." I laugh as Yo Yo Ma bows his brains out on the "Ecstacy of Gold' from "The Good,The Bad, and The Ugly." I recommend this to all Yo Yo Ma and Morricone fans...a great listen. Soothing after a hard day!
Better Every Time.......2007-05-09
This CD gets better with every listening. It was a great purchase.
Fabulous CD.......2007-05-07
I love Morricone and this CD has some of the best versions of my favorite pieces. I have ordered several as gifts for friends.

While the idea of infusing a weekly TV series with a Broadway musical ethos isn't exactly a new one--think Randy Newman's ambitious Cop Rock--it became something of a turn-of the-century television mini-trend. But few have reached as far--or succeeded--like this November 2001 episode of Fox Network's Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Penned by series creator-producer Joss Whedon and performed by Sarah Michelle Gellar and cast, it's a loving, loopy musical pastiche that takes potshots at everything from Andrew Lloyd Webber to alt-rock. Paralleling the show's lovable pop culture tweaking, the musical styles here (the episode's musical conceit is a curse visited upon Buffy's hometown of Sunnydale) range from a patent footlight chorus of demons being interrupted by Gellar's hard-rocking stake thrusts on "Going Through the Motions" to Spike the Vampire's goth-metal complaint "Rest in Peace," with everything from parking tickets and mustard stain removal to climactic duels with the supernatural getting the Broadway send-up. Also includes strong orchestral score-suites from three other episodes, as well as Whedon and wife Kai Cole's demo for "Something to Sing About." --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
I wish for a CD of suites.......2007-07-08
In all honesty, this is a fun CD. Maybe these aren't all professional singers, and maybe some of them have some pretty awful voices (some have lovely ones, though. Let's remember that), but listening to this CD brings back the images from the episode. They're catchy songs, easy to listen to and sing along. Some are better than others, some are silly ("The Mustard" and "The Parking Ticket" just make me laugh, but aren't really that important...), and some give me a momentary spasm of pain ("Dawn's Lament", nasal and painful - good thing the ballet piece is so nice it drives this out of your mind).
I think this is probably only good for fans of the show. I can't see some random person who has no previous love of the episode wanting these songs. They aren't of high quality. They're simply enjoyable for those who love the episode and want the option to sing along and have fun to it. It's a great CD - for some people.
But then you hit the end. Three spectacular tracks that, if you ask me, are what make this CD actually worth it. In addition to the songs from "Once More with Feeling", we get three scores.
The first suite is from another great episode: "Restless". Here, each theme comes out solidly. "Willow's Nightmare" is a creepy, confusing, sort of Middle-Eastern piece with a very nice feel to it, all taken straight from the episode, bringing to mind the wonderful images. The rest of the suite brings together creepy, intriguing singing and lovely sounds that end with the images fresh on your mind. The very ending is perfect - you can almost hear the words from the episode hiding behind the music, barely spoken and breathed aloud. "You think you know. What's to come. What you are. You haven't even begun." A perfect atmosphere and beautiful music with it.
Next, we're presented with a suite from the incredible episode "Hush". Each moment brings to mind matching scenes from the episode. There is the perfect air of mystery, fear, and that eerie sense of something creepy about to happen. There's the sort of choir-like moment, blending into the lovely, romantic "First kiss" part, and ending on a wholly creepy and terrifyingly wonderful note. A superb episode has this excellent score to add to its wonder.
Finally, we're presented with the incredible "Sacrifice", from the episode "The Gift". This is the direct piece used in that incredible episode and it's impossible to listen to it without feeling your heart move. If there was ever a better piece to put on a CD of Buffy music, this is it. You can see everything that happens, and it's just so perfect and complete you can almost cry. The whole piece is just bound to give you chills and bring back those wonderfully painful memories from the episode.
Honestly, while I do love "Once More with Feeling" and the great, fun songs it has, I find that I play the orchestral pieces here much more often than the others. It's those pieces that invoke the great memories and bring tears to my eyes. They're inexplicably powerful in a way that only one song of the musical can match ("Under Your Spell/Standing (Reprise)", without a doubt one of the best songs of the musical). The songs you can get in the episode. The suites are less accessable. I'd opt to buy this just for that.
In summary: No, this isn't spectacular. It's not of extremely high quality. But it's fun and any Buffy fan can appreciate it. Overall, it's great to sing along to, and the scores and suites are a HUGE bonus. Certainly recommended to all fans of the show, but perhaps not to others who can't quite understand all of the jokes and humor.
But I still wish for some more suites...
Soundtrack CD not as good as Music in the actual episode .......2007-06-21
I am very surprized that nearly 300 people reviewed this, and not one person seemed to notice that the songs on this CD are not exactly the same as what actually appeared in the Once More With Feeling episode. Some of the songs are slightly edited, have different mixes, even different vocals and the major thing that disappointed me is that there was some important dialogue that was deleted that they should have kept as part of the songs. For example, Dawn's line "The hardest thing in this world to do, is to live in it" nor is the part where Sweet (the Demon) realizes that Buffy is Dawn's sister and says something to effect "The Slayer, bring her to me, I want to see the Slayer Burn" was also omitted.
Get your Koombayayas out - 76 bloody trombones... (that wasn'y included either....
Play the DVD - the soundtrack is much better.
Sing along.......2007-05-28
Funny thing is you would never notice the plumbing contractor in his construction vehicle belting out the tunes of this CD. Well thats me, i cant help myself. the series has become such an important part of me... the music resonates my memories and feelings of the series in its entirety not only the content of each song. Where do we go? from here..............
Thankyou Josh
Buffy soundtrack.......2007-05-26
This CD was awesome and I love it. I can hear all the songs without watching the whole episode anymore! LOVE IT!!!
The Multi-Talented Cast of Buffy.......2007-05-25
Joss Whedon is a talented writer in that he can go from funny to tear-jerking without missing a beat. This is apparent in his hit television shows (Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel) as well as this cast album from the Buffy episode "Once More With Feeling."
For anyone wondering about the story surrounding this musical, Joss Whedon sums it up in the linear notes of the album. After reading that, even someone unfamiliar with the show is ready to immerse themselves in this album. The songs are beautiful, funny, and never do that musical-tear thing. What is a musical-tear thing, you say? This is where songs are injected into a musical awkwardly for the sole purpose of making the listener/viewer sad, but in a forced and artificial way. The music on this album creates genuine emotion and avoids the aforementioned manufactured musical-tear moments.
Each song retains the personality of the character, and it's really says something about the quality of the cast when every single actor can sing, not only in character, but also well. The only cast member who really can't sing is Alyson Hannigan, who plays Willow, but she pulls off the few lines she's given. Joss Whedon clearly molded these songs around the talents of each cast memember, and it was all the stronger for the effort. The best of the bunch are the rousing "Walk Through the Fire," Gile's raw emotional ballad "Standing" and the reprise with Tara, Spike's "Rest in Peace," and--saving the best for last--Xander and Anya's "I'll Never Tell."
Along with these amazing song is a collection of bonus tracks, the best being "Sacrifice." This song was played at the end of "The Gift" and is some of the best scoring I've ever heard. Every bonus track--much like the album--is listenable.
I'm not sure how much a non-watcher of Buffy would enjoy this album, but each individual song is great in its own way. I do advise watching a few episodes before listening, though.
10/10 Classic.

Highlight versions of cast recordings are by definition a compromise, and this reduction of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom of the Opera is no exception. Weighing in at 59 minutes, it's over 40 minutes shorter than the two-disc version, excising many musical scenes that convey the flow and impact of the show (which include, admittedly, a lot of patter and screaming). On the other hand, all the hits are here--"Think of Me," "Angel of Music," the title tune, "The Music of the Night," "All I Ask of You," "Masquerade," and "Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again"--and Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman are still on hand to make their distinctive contributions to the original London cast. So if you're looking for a convenient, inexpensive single disc that will let you enjoy Lloyd Webber's scrumptious melodies without having to immerse yourself in the action, this just might be for you. --David Horiuchi

Music of the Night????????.......2007-02-28
I really liked the idea of a highlights cd; however, The Music of the Night is not the same one that is on the original two-disc cd. The words aren't even the same. If you enjoy Music of the Night, skip this cd. Otherwise, this cd would be 5 stars.
Great short version!.......2006-12-06
If you only want to hear the songs from this musical, this one is for you. But if you want the full version, get the 4-disc version. I listen to this version in my car when I'm on the road, but I listen to the 4-disc version at home. Both versions are worth the purchase.
A long time favorite.......2006-08-26
This is one of my most treasured CDs. The voices of the cast are incredible! "Think of Me" and "All I Ask of You" are 2 of my favorites. If you enjoy the story behind Phantom, yu will like this soundtrack.
The Best Recording of this Show Available.......2006-04-21
I think that this is the best PHANTOM soundtrack out there:
1)It has the original Broadway cast, the best.
2)It cuts out the more risqu? parts of the show (believe me, there are some), making it "appropriate for the whole family."
3)The entire CD is on one disc, so you can go through the show w/o switching discs.
4)The only song that the movie soundtrack has on it that this doesn't is "Learn to Be Lonely," which appears in the credits, and isn't really a great song anyways.
Great CD.......2006-03-14
I bought this CD as a birthday gift for my boyfriend. We had misplaced the one that we had and needed a new one. This is one of our favorite cd's. Such beautiful music.

Album Description
You may not know Nightwish yet, but the Finnish goth-orchestral-metal band is a phenomenon throughout the rest of the world. The group's fifth album, the platinum-certified Once, hit #1 over the summer on the Pan-European charts, and stayed there for three weeks. Behind them? The Beastie Boys, Avril Lavigne, Norah Jones and Usher, among others. So who or what is this band? On first listen, Nightwish seems to fall into the same genre as Evanescence, Lacuna Coil and the Gathering--female-fronted metal band with symphonic and gothic overtones. But any similarities end there. First of all, singer Tarja Turunen may be the only trained opera singer in metal, and her vocal prowess and range prove it. Then there's the rest of the group, led by keyboardist and primary songwriter Tuomas Holopainen. Listen closely, and you'll hear a group that's equally influenced by opera, classical music, Euro-metal, early thrash and even Kate Bush.
Nightwish formed as, of all things, an acoustic-based band in Kitee, Finland in 1997, though they quickly switched to a hard rock sound. Within a year the group had released its debut album, Angels Fall Fast, which featured the first hit single, "The Carpenter." Their second release, Oceanborn, landed in the Top Five in Finland, and featured three hit singles. By the time Wishmaster came out in 2000, Nightwish was a top concert draw and one of the most critically acclaimed metal bands in all of Europe. Thanks to the on-going buzz, the group was also able to land U.S. distribution for the first time. Nightwish's 4th studio effort came in the form of Century Child, which was the product of one of the most tumultuous periods in the band's career. It marked the grand entrance of Marco Hietala, a metal icon in his own right in his homeland. With Hietala's dual contribution to the band (bass and backing vocals), they were able to put forth some of their darkest, most aggressive material ever.
But Once is Nightwish's breakthrough, both in its epic scope and brilliant songwriting. Disgruntled Metallica fans may find a new axe-god in Emppu Vuorinen, who has quickly become one of the most brutal (and tech-savvy) guitarists in metal. Behind him is a seamless blend of top-notch musicianship and orchestral bombardment (much of which is provided by The Academy of St. Martins in the Field, who scored the Lord of the Rings trilogy). The chart-topping single "Nemo" is a monster, building slowly from a simple piano line and molten guitar riff into an over-the-top, orchestral breakdown. Thanks to Turunen's vocals, the song also possesses a haunted quality that modern-day metal often fails to achieve.
Forget formula--the band doesn't have one. Subtle electronic beats color "Wish I Had an Angel," while tribal drums shape the eight-plus minute "Creek Mary's Blood." There's the aptly titled "Ghost Love Score," which sounds like a great, lost Danny Elfman soundtrack. Then, on the other side, is the rough-and-tumble "Romanticide," a violent kiss-off that ends with bassist / back-up singer Hietala scowling "Spit on me, let go, get rid of me / And try to survive your stupidity" over one of the most headbanging riffs of the last five years.
So, are you ready for Nightwish?
Customer Reviews:
Whoaaa....now THIS is music!.......2007-05-30
WOW!! Pretty much sums it up. I can't get enough of these guys. I'd been hearing about Nightwish for the last couple of years, and now I understand the buzz.
They've created a sound all their own, blending classical, keyboard-based composition, crunchy guitars, and a truly gorgeous operatic female voice into a very heady brew. Some people have said the combination doesn't work. To each his own. For me, it works amazingly well. The talent is topnotch.
Two songs I especially love: Kuolema Tekee Taiteilijan - - simply enchanting. Sung in Finnish by the amazing Tarja (now departed from the band to pursue opera in Germany, I heard), it's like nothing I've ever heard before. Dark Chest of Wonders - - can't stop singing or humming it. Impossibly catchy.
This band has it ALL: class, style, musicianship, songs, stunning vocals, and, for those who appreciate a bit of eye candy on the live stage (I do, and won't apologize for it) - - that celebrated beauty which denizens of the cold Viking north seem so effortlessly blessed with. I'm excited about the debut of their new singer, this current tour stateside. Following on the heels of a voice like Tarja's, she's got her work cut out for her. I wish her all the best!!
Somethin' for everybody, here. I warn ya, this music will grow on you.
Fantastic !.......2007-05-24
It's an amazing sound. The 2 bonus tracks is so cool, the videoclip (Wish I had an angel) is very good too. Is impressive the power and the smoothness of their music. Highly recommended !
A little Nugget of perfection.......2007-05-21
This CD is so balanced when it comes to the sounds you get on it. I can't say that i'd categorize it as a certain type of metal, I know some would call it power metal, symphonic metal etc. But to the lay man, this is a wonderful metal CD with epic orchestral overtones blended perfectly against ravage riffs and powerful voices.
Again, it's so nicely balanced. Dark Chest of Wonders slams you into what the band is all about and what they're capable of producing. Wish I Had an Angel is one or those groovin' "drive" songs, with a nice touch of dark, and (likewise to other tracks) it showcases the sorrowful tones and agressive attack of both the female and male vocalists (Tarja and Marco, he also doubles as the bassist). The licks, chords and riffs in the CD are so solid, if you're looking for a break and release from a lot of 'sloppy metal', you'll love this.
In addition, songs like Creek Mary's Blood feature Native-American drums and chants in an eerie-sweet balad. There's even a pure orchestral song titled Kuolema Tekke Taiteilijan, a piece written in the band's native language (the hail from Finland).
All in all, Once is quite the inspiring CD, and just when you want more from the CD, this particular pressing comes with two fabulous bonus tracks. A highly recommended purchase for your musical entertainment and pleasure.
One of the Great Unknowns.......2007-05-21
I discovered Nightwish & listened to a few sound bits after following a web link from another site. What I heard was GREAT!, so I just had to check them out. I am VERY PLEASED with this album. This prog rock band (very similar to Renaissance) seem to not be very well known in the States, but is very big to Europe. I believe you will be very pleased with what you hear & like myself will be purchasing other CD's by the group.
Truley Epic rock.......2007-05-21
I only new vaguely of Nightwish until one of my friends turned me on to it, and after listening to this album, I think I have a new favorite band.
A few of the songs are a bit harsh (I don't like screaming, so sue me), but others are downright haunting. My favorite track is "Ghost Love Score" which makes full use of the band's orchestral resources and is one of the most beautiful and epic pieces of music I have ever heard.
"Once" manages to provide a broad spectrum of sound, and all of it is of superb quality.

At The Movies by Andre Rieu.......2007-05-20
Andre Rieu brings a warmth and pop-like aire to his music. Here he plays popular music with a classical orchestra and adds his special ingredients to it ie:humor (musical jokes for the serious listener),fun,light-heartedness.It's a band of very talented musicians having alot of fun as is evident in the playing and especially if you've seen them in concert.I can "hear" the smiles on their not serious faces by their style of playing...less staccato and with more feeling.Andre and company swing and dance through every track climaxing on Ravel's Bolero from the movie "10".
very beautiful.......2007-01-09
This cd is very beautiful. It captures the songs wonderfully. The orchestra does a fine job.
Refreshing Music.......2006-11-03
Andre Rieu presents wonderful songs in a very inspirational way. They are to be enjoyed as "dinner music" or just for times when the TV is off and you need some "quiet time". It is a great grouping of melodies.

Andre Rieu - Music for the masses.......2006-08-10
Sometimes you just want enjoyable music as a backdrop to the job at hand. I turn to Andre to get me through these events. Probably not a glowing endorsement, but if you know of Mr. Rieu's feelings about music, he would just smile and nod his head. This is music to just enjoy for the sake of music - and that is a good thing.

In the short time since they grouped together a few years ago to form their sensationally successful trio, the Irish Tenors have already put out an impressive array of recordings and DVDs, including some bona fide gooseflesh-inducing live concert performances. So, if you still have the enviable pleasure of discovering these amazing vocalists--or want to turn a friend on to their musical charms--this compilation CD will do the trick nicely. It brings together such classics as "Danny Boy," "Toora Loora Looral," "Last Rose of Summer," and "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling" (featuring John McDermott)--all rendered with the kind of passionate, heartfelt, and harmonious crooning that is their signature style, whether they're singing as an ensemble or as highlighted soloists. And even if you have the complete Irish Tenors, this anthology includes several numbers not found on their previously released CDs. Hard to think of a sweeter treat for a fan of singing too good to ever go out of fashion. --Sarah Chin

Irish at it's best........2007-05-07
This album is really the number two album from this trio. It is very good and well worth the investment. The five star album by The Irish Tenors would have to be Heritage. Both albums rate high in my book.
Irish Magic.......2006-08-21
This is my first CD of the Irish Tenors. And what a joy! I played it as soon as it arrived. I like the blend of their voices, the passion and enthusiasm they bring to this CD. What I find is a real treat is the words to all the songs are in the booklet.I love this CD.
Just got your Kleenex.......2005-12-25
I suggest a box of Kleenex for each person in the room when you play this CD or VHS recording. Mom won't let me play it anymore because she...well, you know what I mean.
Wonderful!.......2005-12-12
When it's cold and frightful here, I play The BOYZ!
So wonderful. So much fun.
Up here in backwash Maine, there ain't much, believe me. But these guys are great. Sincere, care about what they're doing, true artists.
Ah, to go to Ireland again. Well, not unless the price of natural gas recedes!
The Very Best of the Irish Tenors is just that!.......2005-01-22
This recording is wonderful. Ronan's "last Rose of summer" is unique, the Percy French medley shows all three in great voice, Finbar's Maggie is wonderful and the laurels have to go to Anthony for his magnificent rendition of "She moved through the fair", wow!!!!
Well worth buying.

Based on Hans Christian Andersen's tale The Princess and the Pea, Once Upon a Mattress opened in May 1959 and was a solid success, if not a huge blockbuster. It did well enough, in any case, to warrant a 1997 revival starring Sarah Jessica Parker. The show was far from revolutionary, but it provided a really fun vehicle for a cast of top stage personalities, including black actress Jane White, who played Queen Aggravain (a part originally written for comedienne Nancy Walker) in whiteface. But of course, Once Upon a Mattress's heart and soul was Carol Burnett, who, in her Broadway debut created the part of Princess Winnifred and delivered two of Mary Rodgers's best songs, the hilarious "Shy" and the spunky "Happily Ever After," which sounds a bit like Jule Styne at his most rhythmic. Burnett's timing and performance remain as sharp as they were 40 years ago. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

"Mattress" CD was excellent.......2007-01-09
I've really enjoyed this CD. I only wish the play was available on DVD.
an oldie but a goodie.......2006-03-15
Loved Carol Burnett then and love her now. This original cast CD is a lovely trip down memory lane.
Nothing like the original -- .......2006-01-30
No offense to any of the subsequent "Freds" but Carol Burnett OWNS this role. The recording is as fresh and funny as anything being done today and this is the version musical theatre fans should have in their library. Get it.
Awesome.......2006-01-22
My school did this musical last year (Spring 2005) and I had never heard of it before, so I bought both the Revial and the Original Cast Recordings. Fell in love. I was Sir Harry and loved both songs that I sang in. In my opinion, those are the two best songs in the entire musical, but then again, I'm biased.
Once Upon A Mattress OCR is by far the best out there. Don't get me wrong, the Revival Cast did a wonderful job (soundtrack at least) But There is something about Carol Burnett. She was meant to sing be Fred. But one thing that I didn't like is that "The Minstrel, the Jester & I" wasn't in this recording. But that is really the only problem I had with this.
My fav songs include:
In a Little While (because I sang it)
Yesterday I Loved You (again, I sang it)
Many Moons Ago
Shy
Would I recomend this CD? YES I WOULD!! I would shout it from the rooftops that people should by this CD! It's a funny, quaint little musical that people need to know about. I LOVE IT!
I saw the original on Broadway.......2005-12-19
Once Upon a Mattress was one of the first Broadway shows that I ever saw and I was totally mesmorized and laughed so hard that my side hurt. Carol Burnett was the perfect person to play Fred and it was one of those magical performances that stays with you for a lifetime. The original cast album captures the fun and spirit of the show.
Later during the run of the show a friend of mine joined the chorus and when we talked about the experience, he told me that the joy that was on stage was similar to that felt by the cast and that was apparent on the album. They especially liked working with Ms. Burnett as she was a giving and caring actress.
I recommend this album to anyone who wants to spend some time just feeling good.

No Fistful of Ennio.......2007-01-31
Ennio Morricone wrote great soundtrack music, that's for certain. But no retrospective of his work is complete without the inclusion of more than one lone example from the three mid-60's "spaghetti westerns" he scored for Sergio Leone and Clint Eastwood. Anyone familiar with the UNITED ARTISTS label LPs of "Fistful Of Dollars," "For A Few Dollars More" and "The Good, The Bad And The Ugly" might agree with this.
As for what's here-- most of ENNIO MORRICONE * FILM MUSIC Volume 1 is forgettable incidental stuff. Except for "The Battle Of Algiers (Theme)," the opening and closing tracks are the best. They bookend what turns out to be a disappointing collection, lacking in both liner notes and the brilliance Morricone demonstrated over a 30 year span.
I would call some of these pieces "newage"..........2006-08-02
Moscow Farewell is definitely my pick of the lot. Sacco And Vanzetti was a pleasant surprise once I listened to it a couple of times. It is lively and could be played on a wedding dance floor for the whole family. This is great album to listen to while in bed!
Simply a 'Must Purchase' for those with a passing interest in Morricone's work.......2005-09-13
Arguably one of the greatest (if not the greatest) Film composer of the 20th Century. Not only has he scored some of the most influential and instantly recognisable pieces of film music during his roughly 50 years of composing atmospheric film scores. Whether he's providing the spooky dramatics for a spaghetti Western" or constructing the ingenious use of classical arrangements of brooding cinematic pieces, he has (in most cases) consistently delivered contemporary music that has provided the atmospheric foil for the picture in question. And with a collection of musical influences that were as far ranging as: classical, jazz, pop, rock, electronic, avant-garde, and Italian music, he is able to deliver a variety of film scores that are as diverse as they are beautifully composed.
This compilation is collection of some of the seminal, gritty, theatrical, and dramatic film music, that would go on to define his career, via reflective orchestration and memorable motifs, ingenious use of diverse arrangements and instrumentation. There is a majority of his highlights on this disc, with the magnificently brooding "The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly" opening the disk. what follows is a truly sublime collection of music that is in parts truly beautiful and utterly atmospheric, so tracks such as "Once Upon A Time In The West", benefit from the haunting melodies and stirring volins, that are possibly more in tone with orchestrated music than contemporary music. Or the quiet piano introspection and melancholic arrangements that make up "Moscow Farewell", are simply deserving of being placed amongst the finest soundtrack compositions ever. "Dedicace", contains some of the most litting melodies in recent memory, impossibly sad and affecting, it is a haunting bittersweet composition that is both organic & reflective, over which the volins provide the musical backdrop. And that's without the mention of "For Love One Can Die", the autumnal orchestrated track, that pulls from Italian sweeping gangster original film scores, and makes a hushed and dissonant recording, that feels like a sublime throwback to the mafia-related shenanigans of 60's chicago via the use of restrained piano, that really is quite lovely and adds substantial weight to the composition.
If you are looking for a Ennio Morricone compilation....short of buying a boxset, you'd be hard pressed in beating this for value for money. It's a fantastic summary of his work and covers a fair amount of material. And is the perfect introduction to his work, (especially if you just want to buy one compilation of his work). This is highly recommended to fans both old and new, and is boosted by the compilers making a great job of the selection. So if you don't want to have to splash out on an expensive disk, to hear his influential work...this really is the first place you should start.
ENNIO MORRICONE - FILM MUSIC, VOL. 1 .......2005-08-16
HAVING HEARD EXERPTS OF THE MUSIC BEFORE, IT WAS EXACTLY WHAT I
WANTED.
A collection of Morricone's most popular and entertaining.......2005-07-31
Volume I of III, of this 'best of' Morricone trilogy, is the best of the three. This volume consists of music that can be listened to alone and socially, with some of the most catchy and minimalist rhythms you'll ever hear. You'll listen to this album and wonder what movie you've heard that song from before(Morricone's canon being primarily for film scores). If you're hear because you're trying to get the song from a movie, and you've never really heard of Morricone before, then you've luckily stumbled upon some of the best music I've ever heard. Or, if you're a Morricone fan and you'er looking for a good compilation, since Morricone has done too many film scores to even possibly own them all, then this is good to have. I wouldn't really reccommend Volume II and III unless you're looking or a very comprehensive collection of Morricone, since Volume I seems to me to carry his most absolute best. Definetely buy this album, it's very good.
