A Rock Revolution.......2007-05-16
Never have I heard a band this interesting and creative, since Godsmack or Killswitch Engage. Most likely, their sequel will be just as good, if not better. Enigma will soon hit the shelves this summer on July 27th and you can bet I'll buy it. Ill Nino, in my opinion, is not like any band you've heard before. The factors that noticibly set them apart from other heavy metal bands is they don't usually have the same material for every album, but they also don't stray from it truly means to be a band. I also would also like to note that I and Ill Nino come from the same state, which is New Jersey and I also plan to go to (hopefully) one their concerts live.
Watered down and uninspired........2007-05-15
Their debut was great, and even Confession was solid, but this is like a bunch of b-sides off the previous two albums. You'll listen to it and find yourself nodding your head to a catchy part here and there, but afterwards, you'll have trouble remembering anything significant about it. The big hooks are missing. Hopefully they can return to form on their next one.
So-So.......2007-02-21
Confession is a straight-up classic, without a doubt. If you consider yourself a fan of heavy rock and nu-metal, you should own 2 copies. One Nation Underground is basically just so-so. The second half is much stronger than the first, and although I'm all for experimentation, I would have liked to hear more of the catchy guitar melodies that were on Confession and less of the latin horns, salsa sounds ect.
Ill Nino have since signed to indie label Cement Shoes, and they're working on album number 4 right now. Hopefully it'll be more like Confession and less like One Nation Underground
Ill Nino.......2007-02-02
excellent cd. every song on it was amazing. i loved listening to it. Ill Nino rocks!!!
Very nice!.......2007-01-06
I really like this album. Ill Nino seemed to delve into their more melodic side in this one and it worked out nicely. This is war is probably my favorite track on the album. I like the way the intro blended into the song, which has tibal-like chanting and percussion. The only thing i didn't like so much was the tempo changed greatly from song to song which isn't such a bad thing, but it kind of takes me out of the "trance" that i like when listening to good music. I think most true music listeners will appreciate it. If you're looking for their more hardcore side you should probably get one of the first two albums.
Good album but a little bit different.

Solid live EP.......2005-03-27
One of the few bands to emerge from the dreadful nu-metal scene that actually showed promise was the Texas based Union Underground. With a sound that owed as much to that of Alice in Chains and White Zombie, the Union Underground's debut, 2000's "An Education in Rebellion", was a solid debut that was a breathe of fresh air for metal fans at the time, and this live EP nicely displays the band in a live setting for the most part. "South Texas Deathride" and the band's best cut, "Revolution Man" are the standout live tracks of "Live: One Nation Underground", as well as the mosh heavy renditions of singles "Turn Me On Mr. Deadman" and "Killing the Fly", but by the time these six tracks are over, you'll be wanting more; something which this band failed to deliver. If you liked their debut, you should pick this up, but find it at the cheapest price you can before you buy.
Great Stuff, Indeed!!.......2003-04-06
Here's the breakdown:
1. Intro, what can I say???
2. Wow, this song rocks!! This song started the biggest mosh pit I ever witnessed at a concert.
3. The first single. It rocks, and it WILL start a mosh pit, I guarantee it.
4. Very depressing, but somehow uplifting. I love it!! Awesome ending!!
5. Very heavy and unique!!
6. Great song, but it gets better after the second chorus!! Insane guitar and bass lines for more than a minute!!
UU Kicks!.......2002-07-03
If you don't have it... get it. It's a great disc for the UU heads out there to hold them over until the new disc comes out!!!

time traveling blues.......2001-07-25
This disc sounds like the sketchbook of someone steeped in the acid folk movement of the mid-sixties. This song sounds like Leonard Cohen, that like Dylan, this like Syd Barrett, that like Richard Farina. It's good. It's strange. There are some very beautiful songs here. Some are trapped in the past while others hover outside of time. Tom Rapp's vocal style is an acquired taste and it sounds like he is trying out different approaches, some which work and others which do not. As a historical document, you might enjoy this.

"Society is a loaded weapon".......2006-09-08
[Note: If you don't mind paying the big bucks--this album is worth it--or can find a good deal on this version, this Japanese import includes a bonus demo track. Otherwise, you can pay a third and maybe a quarter of the price and get the domestic CD].
I am becoming a huge Ill Nino fan! I haven't been this excited about a band in over a decade! One Nation Underground received some early lukewarm reviews. The most common complaint was that it is not as hard as their previous albums. On first listening, I felt it was not quite as good as Revolution/Revolucion but an improvement from Confession. After repeated listens, I am liking this album more and more and put it right up with Revolution and maybe even slightly above! It is not as intense and powerful as Revolution so I can understand why some fans who hoped they would produce a heavier Sepultera/Korn style metal album may have been disappointed. That heavier side of Ill Nino is here, but not as much as on Revolution.
This band has so many styles working for it which is the reason they are my favorite modern band. The more accessible power metal style is what drew me to them because so much new metal is dominated by death metal with screeching or bellowing vocals. The excellent, sing-along-to vocals here along with the addictive hooks is what makes this band top-notch in my opinion, and that side of Ill Nino is most prevalent on One Nation Underground. The shorter tracks also make this album more accessible.
The booklet includes photos of the band, lyrics (including the English translation of the Spanish parts which is a big plus), credits and thank you's. As the album title/cover suggests, there are political themes here, but I don't think it dominates the album. The last tracks, brings responsibility away from society and back to the individual: "I am the only thing that destroys me/I hold my own convictions/Yo me rompo (I will break)."
"This Is War" (3:45): Korn-like beginning. Furious and angry. It reminds me of "If You Still Hate Me" off Revolution. It changes tempo and vocal style as Ill Nino is known for and has a Latin-style instrumental bridge.
"My Resurrection" (2:54): For fans who like the heavier Korn-like metal sound, this song is for them. It has screaming, vicious vocals straight-through.
"What You Deserved" (3:00): Now this track has that more accessible power metal sound that I prefer. It is very catchy. One of my favorites.
"Turns to Gray" (3:24): Thunderous vocals combined with a catchy, sing-along chorus and a heavy powerful ending.
"De La Vida" (4:05): This is a pounding track. There is a lot of depth to this one. An excellent blend of the accessible and the harsh with some Spanish lyrics. In other words, what Ill Nino is all about.
"La Liberacion of Our Awakening" (3:45): As the tile suggests, this is a very political song. The spoken word part includes lyrics like "corporations play a monopoly with society" and "Pharmaceutical companies provide you with all the answers to your problems only to fill the pockets of the politicians." Excellent chorus.
"All I Ask For" (3:40): One of the softer, more radio-friendly track on this album. Very catchy. I love this track! It's softer but still rocks! You may not bang your head, but it will definitely move in a nodding motion (Oh yeah!).
"Corazon of Mine" (3:30): Now the heavier side of Ill Nino. Still, not as much of the raw, harsh vocals, but still a blistering track. I love the chorus: "Stay forever/Walk behind me/When I say it's forever/Don't remind me how long."
"Everything Beautiful" (3:14): Intense at times but, as the title indicates, it is beautiful at others, particularly the chorus: "And I'm breaking away from everything beautiful..." Ah, the beauty of metal. There's nothing like it.
"In This Moment" (3:22): A lot of Latin flavor here.
"My Pleasant Torture"(4:29): OK, this track may be a bit soft for Ill Nino. There are some powerful parts but, "Did you ever ask the stars not to shine no more, fly no more?" is rather sappy. Like "With You" off Revolution, Ill Nino is not at their best doing sweet, sensitive songs.
"Barely Breathing" (1:05): Short, soft guitar instrumental. It hooks into the next track, which is incredible, I didn't even know this was a separate song until I checked the track listing.
"Violent Saint" (3:46): FURIOUS and BLISTERING! Incredibly powerful ending track. The tortured vocals screaming out "Why am I a victim to myself? When everything burns my torture lies within!" Awesome! Ill Nino rules!

Ethereal, mystical, painfully beautiful folk psych.......2002-12-24
Last Sunday night I laid on my bed with the lights out and listened to this CD in its entirety. It was a religious experience -- and i wasn't even stoned. This album is folk psych at its best: haunting, ethereal, painful, mystical, beautiful. I can't believe it took me 35 years to experience this album. If I had had this at 15 -- ?! This is a soulful experience, indeed. A must for any folk psych collection. Along the lines of "Forever Changes," this is one of those rare vintage '60s masterpieces that most people will never hear....but it is out there...like a far away, fading star on a moonless Sunday night.
A seminal effort.......2001-03-18
This particular piece of work came at a time when music was at a crossroads. Tom Rapp took a very bold step by incorporating the poetry of the Beats with the Folkrock of Dylan and Co. After over thirty years, it still maintains its impact and relavance. Uncle John, and I Shall Not Care, are songs that should be listened to often, just to maintain a healthy perspective about life on Planet Earth. I wore out two copies on vinyl.

Customer Reviews:
A '60s acid-folk classic from Tom Rapp and company.......2005-08-08
`Pearls Before Swine' and `Balaklava', both by the Tom Rapp lead group, Pearls Before Swine, are, like The Doors first two albums, cut from the same `acid folk' cloth and are both responsible for establishing Rapp as a cult artist of the first order.
I `discovered' `Pearls Before Swine' in my Fugs period when I sought out other artists distributed on ESP disk. The item which cemented my devotion to Rapp was the last track on `Balaklava', being the brief J. R. R. Tolkien poem laying out the story of the rings of power from `Lord of the Rings'. This was during the second of three waves of Tolkien popularity when `The Hobbit' and `The Lord of the Rings' were first published in paperback.
On looking at Rapp's biography in the notes to these two disks, I am wondering why Rapp did so poorly in comparison to his near folk singing songwriter contemporary, Bob Dylan. Both are of about the same age and both were born and raised in the far northern central US. And, both latched onto the protest of the 1960s as their primary subject.
It's probably not all that difficult, really. Dylan had an iconic name, his record company was Columbia, his producer was John Hammond, he effectively established himself as the successor to Woody Guthrie, and he performed widely in some of New York City's most famous folk clubs. Against that kind of momentum, it's easy to see how Dylan even outstripped Guthrie's own son in popularity. And that doesn't even touch on the fact that Dylan wrote great songs. Oh, and Dylan didn't sing with a lisp.
Getting back to Rapp, his songwriting is good enough to get early attention, but he and his group also rely on just a few too many gimmicks more at home on ESP disk than on a Columbia release. `Balaklava', for example, has three short tracks dedicated to very old recordings of survivors from the battle of Balaklava which is most famous for the ill-fated charge of the light brigade. Even their performance of Leonard Cohen's `Suzanne' is something of a cliché, as the song was done by just about everyone after Judy Collins' initial performance.
In spite of all these things which detract from these albums, I am very happy to have these 1960's relics on CD so I can preserve my vinyl copies in good condition. I recommend these to anyone interested in the major cult classics from the `60's and early `70's popular music.
interesting debut album.......2005-04-22
i really prefer this debut over their 2nd album, balalavka, which seems to get some more acclaim overall. there are some tunes, such as regions of may, which haven't aged all that well, and pearls before swine were a rather unique, bizarre, polarizing group that people will either really enjoy or totally loathe... playmate is the only cover on the album, and it kinda sounds like what might happen if bob dylan had showed up on sesame street circa 1967! it's a pretty good tune though...another time features the sophisticated lyrics of tom rapp, who, although he sings with some sort of lisp, is usually an engaging and thought provoking song writer...uncle john is one of the best and angriest anti- vietnam songs, and also the closest song on here to early hard rock or garage rock. there's a good bassline on this number too. and the also bitter i shall not care goes through several distinct phases, including a weird and droning 'eastern' sounding part. it also has some beautiful acoustic strumming in it and fine lyrics... although released in 1967,the haunting surrealist waltz is very, very modern sounding, it sounds like a strange poem done by a latter day low fi band...the melody is really pretty, and this is probably the best song on the album. strangely enough, it is the only song on which rapp is not the lead vocalist. drop out! concerns itself with the dominant ethos of the hippie sub-culture...overall, this is a fine folk-rock album which deserves about 3. 5 stars, if such a rating was available...there are some weak cuts that drag it down a little, but it is interesting and worthy of investigation, and the band also gets style points from me for including the great artwork of peter breughel and hieronymous bosch on their album covers!
not tooooo bad.......2004-12-11
"Another Time" starts this off, and it's good. "UNcle John" is more of a rock song, "Dear Miss Morse" is kinda cool-morse code sounds make it cool, and that last song "Surrealist Waltz" is written by the other band members (not Rapp), and it has a certain bizarre appeal. The rest of the album is pretty boring, 60's wanna be folk-ish stylings, like this guy Tom Rapp heard Dylan and Arlo and tried to do what THEY do, while keeping an awareness of the psychedelic sound that was blossoming. The production is weak, and Rapp sings with a very noticeable lisp-these two factors make it more endearing. "Another Time' is pretentious, but it still works "or have you...come by again...to die again...try again, another time". I think someone that like Country Joe and early Dead (not among my favorites), would like this, although it is rawer.
Great album.......2004-01-23
This album pretty much has two types of feels to it. It either has a Leonard Cohen Vibe or a Bob Dylan Vibe going for it. This guy does a pretty good job at it, and he plays with a lot of feeling. I knocked off one star because this album lacks originality and the overall song writing isn't on par with say a Leonard Cohen or a Bob Dylan. I will say this though, the writing on this record is very consistent and he does add his own unique twist to some of the stylings laid out by the aforementioned artists. Also, if you like psychadelic music I would give this album a go as it's bizarre and may be condusive to the psychadelic experience.
Raw folk-psych genius........2003-10-15
If I had known of this album when I was 14, it would have altered my universe for good. Unfortunately, I only came upon it at age 33. Better late then never. This is the best folk-psych out there: ethereal melodies, bizarre and profound lyrics, and a lead singler with a major lisp who doesn't even care and sings lines like: "...did you sssee the sssumer out, when winter pussshed its facccce in the ssssnow?"...
Every song is incredible. The raw "uncle john" is as timely as ever, given our current absurd war in iraq. The last track is a haunting waltz -- one of the greatest songs I've ever heard in my life. But literally, every song is amazing. Lots of acoustic guitar, lots of electric guitar, lots of funky noises. Wonderful songs. If you like Love, Country Joe, Donovan, Nick Drake, etc, -- you are going to be blown away.
