Majestic hymns sung with British accents. A great combination! I haven't noticed any objectionable sounds on my copy.
hymns we sang in church.......2003-02-16
i grew up in a traditional presbyterian church that had a pipe organ. i wanted a cd of many of the hymns that we sang in church sung by a choir and accompanied by a pipe organ. this cd fulfilled my wishes perfectly. the hymns are performed in a very straight-forward fashion with no show-boating or excess flourishes which is exactly what i wanted. this is not gospel music but what i refer to as liturgical music to indicate that it is religious music but not gospel music. i would give it 5 stars but there is a slight hiss. other than that the recording quality is very good.

Not impressed.......2003-11-25
I was not terribly impressed with this CD. Fortunately, I decided to get it from the library to see if it was good before deciding whether or not to buy it.
Although the orchestration of the songs is well done, most of them simply were not meant to be performed by a chorus; and they sound terrible in that form. If you want some of the songs on this CD, I suggest you look at one of Disney's compilation CDs in the Classic Disney Vol. 1-5 series or the actual soundtracks of the movies.
Inexorable wonder!.......2001-06-23
Where to start?! Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra have had a track record for recording some of the most stupendous movie music ever. Magical Musicals is just another example of how audaciously bold, yet beautiful Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops have taken the original scores, molded them into the same pieces, yet at the same time, creating life of their own in each and every note. If you are looking for ANY soundtrack containing Disney music, this should be the first CD you listen to. There are others out there, and yes, they may sound beautiful and enchanting, but you won't find such a unique and compelling score anywhere else other than this CD. Check it out!!

This is a well-filled, superbly played and recorded disc of William Byrd's enchanting Consort Songs, written for solo voice and strings. Early music icon Emma Kirkby is the expert soprano soloist in a dozen songs, ranging from underground tributes to Elizabeth I's doomed rival, Mary, Queen of Scots, to the religiously inspired "O Lord, how vain," to the comic. Two favorites among the latter are sure to be: "Content is rich," whose text explores the age-old phenomenon that no one's ever satisfied with their lot in life, and "My mistress had a little dog," whose last stanza parodies the pomp of a "royal trial." Kirkby excels in these, shading her voice and projecting the text with deadpan humor. But then, she's in fine form for the others too. Monotony is avoided the range of Byrd's music and by the crack viol ensemble Fretwork, which skillfully plays the often elaborate song accompaniments and offers five instrumental tracks of Byrd's consort music, delivered with panache. --Dan Davis
Customer Reviews:
mesmerizing, if not totally seductive.......2005-02-18
I heard this CD Playing in a music store this afternoon, and try as I might, I was not able to manage to escape without buying it. In fact, I stayed long past my welcome to listen to it all.
I have a genetic aversion to soprano vocals in classical music, for which the only known cure is Emma Kirkby. Her delivery is so simple, so clean, so pure, and it so perfectly matches Byrd's music that you'd think he knew she was coming and wrote the music for her 350 years in advance "just in case". This is a splendid collection. And there is no praise too high for Fretwork. A tremendous band. Normally I might say that 70 minutes of this at one sitting might be considered overexposure, but the music is so....soothing that I can see having this on a great deal. Highly recommended.

Customer Reviews:
Sweet and honest.......2006-08-18
I love him. It's hardly a 'comedy' album -- it's just life, which is intrinsically funny if it's done honestly. Note that Rick Reynolds now has a website (google for "church of rick"), and he's selling DVD's of his two shows for much cheaper than the used CD prices.
Divine Madness!.......2006-05-06
I was introduced to Rick Reynold's via his Showtime special in the 90's and have loved him ever since. Gah-gah over Rick much? I am. I've begged Showtime to play his show again, to sell it on DVD, just make it available! Please. So even if this is just audio and a little pricey, it's worth having in your library.
Listening to Rick Reynold's unique brand of comedy, I'm always reminded of Peter O'Toole's character in the Earl of Gurney in The Ruling Class. (Wait for it.) He rode around the bedroom on a tricycle believing he was Jesus Christ (which may, BTW, be where the saying 'Jesus Christ on a trike'came from...but I digress) as his bride begged him to show some dignity. The Earl answers, "Dignity has nothing to do with divinity!"
That's Rick Reynolds. Not the guy on the trike, but definitely a divine being who thumbs his nose at traditional standards of dignity. He points out the flaws in both of those D words and somehow manages to gain your respect, even if you might be a bit offended. He puts all his bumps, cuts, bruises and warts right out there for you, wrapped in his most excellent intelligence and sense of humor to prove that yes, only the truth is funny. Reynolds mocks the worst of human behavior and melts the heart with his appreciation of the frailty and goodness he sees beneath it all. He questions and studies everything and doesn't leave you wondering about his analysis of life. Reynolds is wonderfully and hilariously irreverent and thankfully unapologetic for it. His brave, unabashed approach to holding up the microscope and the mirror is still as fresh and vivid as ever. Rick Reynolds is truly divine and the only comic I've ever had the great pleasure of being obsessed with. :sigh: If you're not obsessed yet, you are missing out!
Worth digging for!.......2006-01-22
This is the best of a batch of spoken word recordings that came out in the 90s on the tiny "Gang of Seven" label. The series included Spalding Gray ("Monster in a Box" and "Terrors of Pleasure"), Lynda Barry, Tom Bodett, Hugh Brown Shu, about a dozen releases in all. This disc is fantastic, but I can't imagine paying EIGHTY DOLLARS for it. Best thing to do is keep your eyes open -- I've got four GO7 discs and I found them all in bargain bins.
It's hard to describe why this performance is so good. It's funny and serious, cynical and hopeful, shallow and philosophical, mostly it's just interesting. You can listen over and over again. I played this on the radio twice and got lots of positive phone calls. Too bad I had to tell listeners it was out of print.
My advice is look in the bargain bins. I've found GO7 discs all over the place, in thrift stores and chain stores, and they're always dirt cheap. Good luck!
Very funny, very sad and very much worth finding & enjoying.......2004-12-24
You're right, makada, Rick Reynolds is an excellent performer whose work was both intensely meaningful and hilarious. Few shows I've seen use personal autobiography, pathos and humor together to such startling and dramatic effect.
I too was turned on to Reynolds 15 years ago when his 90-minute TV special came out, a magnificent program. I have the whole show on videocasette and through the years have shared it with old friends and new friends time and time again, because it's that orginal and that entertaining. It's truly unlike any comedy performance you will see or hear today. And it's a shame the video of this performance is not generally available, and that Reynolds is not enjoying popularity right now on a wide scale. I hope he does regain the spotlight; this is truly comedy at its finest (and I, like Reynolds, try not to exaggerate!). Find this concert if you can, and enjoy.
EXCELLENT.......2004-03-11
Caught Reynold's show on Showtime several years ago ...
Have been trying to track it down ever since.
It was so compelling, sharp, funny, insightful, moving. Have begged SHOWTIME to re-release it, air it again, etc. Have repeatedly searched for any news items or links to Reynolds (no, am not a stalker) indicating he would be performing somewhere.
Have been unable to even get ahold of the recording - until recently when I finally found/bought a used copy. Pure bliss listening to him again. Ten years later AGAIN laughed out loud, choked up, and immediately passed it on to others who would instantly understand and appreciate his appeal.
Worth the effort - FIND this album. Share it with friends. It withstands the test of time.
Where is Rick Reynolds? Please come back.

ISSUE RESOLVED ON THE EUPHRATES.......2005-06-19
One question I might find among the more difficult in my life would be - which is my favourite Handel oratorio? I suspect that my answer would generally be 'the one I heard most recently', and that, as I write this, is Belshazzar. It is a magnificent thing, a heavenly thing. It has taken me longer than it should have to come to an appreciation of what makes Handel the phenomenon - as a genius, as an artist, as a craftsman - that he is, but I am comforted to reflect that no less a genius than Haydn, at the age of nearly 70 gaining a more thorough knowledge of Handel in performance, was driven to say that he felt a mere apprentice. In his sense of how to pace a dramatic narrative, in his instinct for how to use the human voice in song and above all in chorus, in the matchless flexibility and adroitness he displays at word-setting and in the audacity of his melodic and harmonic effects I can think of nobody who can approach Handel on his own terms.
Belshazzar was not a great success at the box-office, although this may have had more to do with difficulties in the casting than because it was deemed insufficiently biblical for oratorio, which seems to have been the fate of Hercules. It seems to me to be perfectly well described as oratorio in other ways too, with (for one thing) the extensive use of the chorus that we find in, say, Samson but not in Hercules. The one passage that cries out for visual effects is of course the apparition of the moving finger itself. Even here the composer can go a long way with sheer power of suggestion, by the strange unaccompanied violin figure creeping upwards and the frightened brevity of the vocal numbers. Otherwise for me Belshazzar is as much an oratorio as Samson is. It has the same librettist too, the crusty and formidable Jennens, who had also collaborated with Handel on Saul and on Messiah itself. Jennens' full text is not provided, but I think if you read the synopsis first and then follow the work from the headlines to each number you will have no difficulty in catching the words, so clear is the enunciation by soloists and chorus alike. As usual, Handel was driven to make alterations to the score for practical reasons. He had been a little concerned about its length, roughly 2 hours and 50 minutes in this performance, but where he wishes to be expansive he gives us full measure - two arias in Act I scene 4 take well over 7 minutes each. The liner-essay (a good one, by Anthony Hicks) goes into the issue of the version of the score used here, and I personally have no problem with it.
I have no faults to find with the performance in any way. Pinnock is an established specialist, the instruments are period instruments and vocal cadenzas at the end of the arias are kept minimal. Anthony Rolfe Johnson, James Bowman and David Wilson-Johnson are tried and trusted Handel singers and at their best here, and Nicolas Robertson and Richard Wistreich in the smaller parts are every bit as good. The part of Cyrus is a soprano part, taken by Catherine Robbin, and when I thought I heard just one touch of strain in `Destructive War' in the final scene she makes up for it instantly in her superb duet with Arleen Auger in the following number. Auger as Nitocris the mother of Belshazzar has the biggest part, and she covers herself with glory all the way through.
The recording is perfect, and when I saw an aria entitled `Destructive War, thy limits know' near the end I felt a sharp sense of irony in the year 2005. Cyrus, Handel, Jennens, you should all have been living at this hour.
Enjoiyable, but lacking, too........2004-08-16
This 3CD set of George Frederic Handel's (1685-1759) "Belshazzar", from Archiv Production, a division of Universal Music, is proof again that transfer from vinyl to tape to disc brings with it improvements in listening that make the purchase a worthwhile addition to anyone's listening library. Written in 1744, "Belshazzar" is an oratorio in the operatic style that is wonderful oratorio, but lacking the true depth one expects to hear in an opera. London opera audiences of Handel's day agreed, as both "Belshazzar" and Handel's other offering of the period in the same style, "Hercules", were not terribly successful. Instead of the scheduled 24 performances only 16 were given and Handel never offered a full season of oratorio again. The Libretto by Charles Jennens (1700-1773) is, as the production notes say, meant "not only to show the fall of Babylon but to show it as a fulfillment of divine prediction and to confirm the biblical testimony by reference to classical history." There's only one problem, as good a quality as the CDs are, it is not possible to follow the full libretto and the accompanying booklet includes no text, which is a shame. I think the listening experience would have been increased immeasurably if one was able to follow the text of what is being sung. Nonetheless the dramatic narrative is fluid and even, and the English Concert and Choir provide nice balance to the less full vocal passages, as in Disc 3s "Oh Glorious prince", cut 10. There is enough of this throughout to keep one's interest, but disappointing if what one expects is another ""Messiah".

An essential boxed set of RVWs work.......2000-04-18
Originally, I was confused when I encountered this set, as it incorporates four formerly individual Nimbus releases, now deleted from their catalogue. Be warned, then, if you have Nimbus releases of 'An Oxford Elegy' (and other choral music), or of RVWs Chamber Music (including the 'Phantasy Quintet' and the 'String Quartet') - these are the same recordings!
That being said, if you don't have these titles, or you have them in another release, and you enjoy RVWs music, then you simply must add this anthology to your collection. These discs include the first recording of 'An Oxford Elegy' that I ever encountered; it is such a marvellous piece that you'll be scrambling for poetry anthologies to find bits of Matthew Arnold's 'Thyrsis' and 'The Scholar Gypsy' just to read along. 'Flos Campi' is a marvellous, almost impressionistic piece, which always brings an image of Roman legions marching slowly through Surrey to mind. The 'Phantasy Quintet' is exception, as is the 'String Quartet'. However, it is the recording of the 'Lark Ascending' (now sadly thieved by some cursèd auto manufacturer to flog their worthless vehicles) that is the high point of this, as it is of most, collections. Of course, I could be considered biased, as it is my all-time favourite piece of music. The collection is rounded out by, among others, the essential 'Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis' and an interesting selection of the Sacred and Secular songs, as well as three of RVWs Shakespeare treatments.
Nimbus recordings are first class, and under the skilled hand of William Boughton the English String Orchestra is incomparable. Words cannot bring to these works to the life that they have on hearing, whether first or repeated. They are absolutely something that must be experienced for themselves.

A Must Have CD.......2007-03-08
Track Listing: 1. Straight and Narrow, 2. What's It All For, 3. How Big Is Your Want To, 4. Turn To You, 5. Somethin' To Believe In, 6. He's Not A Baby Anymore, 7. The Only Truth I Know, 8. Some Kind Of Wonderful, 9. I'm Still Dancin', 10. I'm Not In Heaven Yet, 11. More To Do, 12. Beautiful People, 13. Alfred & Omega.
Lisa Daggs-Charette is my favorite singer. The Only Truth I Know is Lisa's fourth album and is her most popular album to date. This album is not only country but has some definite rock and blues influences as well. This album has some upbeat songs like, "Somethin' To Believe In" & "Some Kind Of Wonderful. "I'm Still Dancin'" is a testimony song and is a good description of her ministry. It is featured on the Gaither Homecoming DVD "New Orleans Homecoming". The song "Straight And Narrow" was voted #1 song for 2001. It also has some beautiful ballads, "He's Not A Baby Anymore," I'm Not In Heaven Yet" & "The Only Truth I Know". This a great album and will appeal to everyone. My personal favorites from this album are "Straight And Narrow," "What's It All For," "The Only Truth I Know" & "I'm Still Dancin." To date Lisa has six albums and 14 #1 radio singles. She has won numerous awards over the years for her voice and albums. She still performs numerous concert dates around the country each year. She has also been featured on a number of the Bill Gaither and Friends Homecoming DVD and does a number of concert dates with them each year. Over all she is an awesome artist and I highly recommend this album and all her other albums to you! Check out her site at [...]

I haven't even listened through the entire CD. I don't think I can bring myself to spend my time doing so. Where to begin. From the selections I've heard, the chorus sounds incredibly thin and weak, the organ overpowering them on numerous occasions. Part of the blame in that, however, goes to the mix...the choir not getting enough mic to balance out the instruments. That happens too often in chorus/instrument recordings and it drives me batty. The music selections aren't so inspiring either. You would do much better devoting your hard-earned dollars to Eric Whitacre's acappella choral works, or any of his contemporaries.
