Customer Reviews:
Nice discover !.......2007-05-25
I was really pleased to discover recently in Hong Kong this norwegian singer with an excellent group of talented musicians . Silje write her own music and has the feeling to take you in this jazzy mood waters, but please don't compare her to Norah Jones , because Silje is much more talented than the annoying Norah ! I will check for her previous CD's ! Thanks for those northern feelings .
Scandinavian laid-back.......2007-05-19
'Space', Norwegian jazz-singer Silje Nergaard tells, 'is perhaps the best asset Norway has to offer'.
Her music on 'Darkness Out of Blue' fully reflects this view. Nergaard deliberately sings in a minimalist style, leaving as much as possible to the imagination of her listeners. 'A typical approach from Northern Europe', she reveals. Nergaard's modest & laid-back ways are quite in line with her thinly populated country, where the breathtaking nature sometimes overwhelms the human factor -- coming with dark winters that last for nine months a year.
However, you cannot be more wrong than by taking Silje Nergaard's modesty for incompetence. On 'Darkness Out of Blue' her very good, versatile voice excellently harmonizes with the high-quality performance of her musicians. Producing alltogether a very well balanced jazz, influenced by folk and pop. A great CD, earmarked by Silje Nergaard's special Scandinavian approach.

Doesn't work for me........2006-05-04
I LOVE the Swingle Singers. The first time I heard them sing Bach back in the 60's I was driving a car and I was so blown away that I had to pull off the road. And I LOVE Irving Berlin's music; his message is simple and direct and tuneful. And therein lies the rub. To me, the jazz vocal styles, the contemporary harmonies and the whimsical utterances of the Swingle Singers go together with Irving Berlin's music like oil and water; they just don't mix. The words and melodies are those of Irving Berlin but the end result isn't Irving Berlin. Admittedly this is one man's opinion, and others might take great pleasure in the Swingle Singers' unfailing virtuosity and inventiveness. But if you anticipate the straighforward tunes and emotional directness in Berlin's music, you are apt to be disappointed.

Mellow late sixties soul music.......2005-04-13
Smokey Robinson and the Miracles recorded most of their best music in the early to mid-sixties, after which Smokey gave a lot of his best songs to other Motown artists. Thus, these albums from 1968 and 1969 do not capture the group at their best but they are still worth hearing if you are a committed Motown fan.
The first album, Time out, yielded four American top forty hits although three of them only made the thirties. Baby baby don't cry was the first single from the album and the biggest hit by far, making the American top ten. It missed the British charts and no further singles from the album were released in Britain. The three other American hits were Doggone right, Abraham Martin and John and Point it out. Marvin Gaye also recorded Abraham Martin and John, his version being released as a British single and making the top ten. Although I'm more familiar with Marvin's version (and therefore my be biased), I really do think Marvin's version is superior and wonder what would have happened if his version had been released in America instead of Smokey's.
The other songs on Time out include covers of My girl (actually written by Smokey but a 1965 hit for the Temptations), Wichita lineman (Glen Campbell) and For once in my life (Stevie Wonder). Another reviewer suggests that Wichita lineman doesn't work but I quite enjoyed Smokey's version of the song. Nevertheless, I agree that The composer is a really great song. Now, why wasn't it released as a single? It would surely have done better (at least in America) than some that were released.
The second album here is Four in blue. It may not be their greatest album but I really don't think it's as bad as another reviewer suggests. Having said that, Motown didn't release any singles from it in Britain or America, so perhaps they weren't impressed by it. The songs that everybody will surely recognize are the covers of Hey Jude (Beatles), You've lost that loving feeling (Righteous brothers) and My world is empty without you (Supremes). Are they as good as the originals? No, but they are different and I enjoy them.
The remaining songs on Four in blue include four written by Smokey and several others written by Motown staff writers such as Nickolas Ashford and Valerie Simpson. Among the highlights are California soul, Dreams dreams and You send me your good loving.
These two albums may not be the best that Smokey Robinson and the Miracles recorded, but I find them relaxing and enjoyable. If you are building a collection of their music, you may be better to buy their earlier albums first.
PLEASE I NEED HELP.......2002-09-04
HI MY NAME IS MARLENE ANDI NEED SOME HELP SO COULD SOME ONE HELP PLEASE I'M LOOING FOR A SONG BY SMOKEY ROBINSON IT'S CALLED YOU NEGLECT ME I CANT NOT FIND IT NO WHERE AND I'M TRYING TO DOWNLOAD IT SO CAN YOU PLEASE HELP ME THANK YOU
Of all Smokey albums - why Four in Blue?.......2001-09-03
As a very big Smokey Robinson fan, I was delighted to see Motown reissue these long out of print CDs again. I was even more excited to find that this reissue would include "Four In Blue", an album that had never before been released in CD format.
First, for those who have never heard this material, Time Out... has a number of great tracks on it. "Doggone Right", "Baby Don't Cry", "Once I Got to Know You" (truly marvelous) and "The Composer" are all stand outs. But this album also has its share of tracks that simply don't work, (namely The Hurt is Over and Witchita Lineman) as well as a few tunes that could have been remarkable were it not for the horribly out of tune background voices (the covers of "Abraham, Martin, and John" and "For Once in My Life"). This album by itself would probably rate around 3 stars.
But the real disappointment lies in the choice of Four In Blue as the second album. The first two tracks, especially "You Send Me", are wonderfully crafted Smokey Robinson originals. But after that, this CD travels downhill faster than an avalanche. Most of the remaining tracks were written by other songwriters, (only 2 other tunes were written by Smokey out of the last ten), and frankly, they shoud have never been recorded.
As such a big fan of Smokey's, I think it's really unfortunate that another album like Pocket Full of Miracles or One Dozen Roses wasn't chosen for the second half. If the decision to choose Four In Blue was because it was chronologically released after Time Out, that would make sense only if the intent was to release Smokey's entire catalog. Otherwise, I'm sure that Motown could have found a much stronger selection of songs to re-release. Very disappointing indeed.
As a final note, for those who have the Time Out For Smokey CD that was originally released in 1986, if you truly enjoy these songs and care about such things, this CD is well worth the purchase for the remastering alone. Songs like "My Girl" were originally mastered very poorly. You could actually hear the tape trying to catch up with iself at the beginning of the song, creating a sound that resembled a warped record. This reissue's only saving grace, is that those problems from the first go round are cleaned up very well. But for those of you looking for a CD to familiarize yourself with Smokey Robinson's material, stay away from this release until you become a die hard fan who wants to hear it all.

out of the illness.... into the blue!.......2004-11-20
Some of you may not know this, but Delta Goodrem actually battled a serious cancer throughout most of 2003. Despite that, she had a record-breaking 6 number one hits from her first album, "Innocent Eyes" which went platnium 14 times and sold 2.3 million copies in Australia and UK. On top of that she won a record-smashing 7 ARIA awards (Australia's equivelant to the Grammys)
News of Delta's illness after such a perfect start to her career (then just the tender age of 17), sent shockwaves through her massive fan base and rocked all who had heard of her. But her pure spirit and positive outlook on life have helped her and her adoring fans pull through this dauntng time.
Delta makes her highly anticipated return to the music with this song "Out of the Blue", an epic love song about a former partner. When promoting the album and asked why she didn't release a track based more specifically on her illness, she answered, "I wanted to show everyone that the year was filled with many positives as well as the negatives. I wanted to return to my friends and fans as someone not dwelling on the past and ready to move into the new era."
In a different style as her usual swooning melodies, "Out of the Blue" marks a new edge in Delta's music which is explored more thoroughly in her follow-up album "Mistaken Identity". "out of the Blue" is simply a beautiful song, filled with uplifting, inspiring lyrics and a majestic melody.
I think I should also mention something on the B-Sides, particularly "Visualise". This one of the beautiful and tear-jerking songs. It explores more into Delta's battle with cancer and telling herself that she can do it, she can see the end and she WILL get there! It's one of my favourite songs and its a shame it won't be on the final album.
so in conclusion, "Out of the Blue" re-introduces us to Delta as a more mature, stronger more determined singer, with a driving energy and a passion to put a smile and tune in our hearts. She's out of the illness... and into the blue! I love you, Delta!
