About the Artist
David Ferguson and David Rhodes worked with the Phil Manzanera and Brian Eno led '801' before forming 'Random Hold'. They were later joined by Simon Ainley ('801') and Bill MacCormick (Quiet Sun, Matching Mole, Gong, This Heat, 801) . When Simon left, drummer Peter Phipps (Gary Glitter Band) joined the line up. Peter Gabriel had by now signed the band to his 'Gailforce' label and they were produced by Peter Hammill to release an album. In 1980 'Random Hold' joined Peter Gabriel for the U.K and North American legs of his world tour as they complemented his own vision and added their own dimension. So impressed were the American label with the band that when the Gabriel tour was finished they were encouraged to extend their stay to tour clubs and colleges.
The band split with David Rhodes becoming Peter Gabriel's guitarist and co- conspirator on numerous projects. David Ferguson briefly formed a new version of the band recording and album for RCA then for Atlantic Records under the name 'Nine Ways To Win'. David is now a successful composer of powerful evocative TV soundtracks. Peter Phipps rejoined the Glitter Band and Bill MacCormick pursued a career in politics.
Product Description
This album has been produced by Bill MacCormick bar track 4 which was produced by Peter Hammill. The music covers 'Random Hold's progress from an early Rhodes/Ferguson collaboration, through the various demo's recorded during the Ainley era to the last demos recorded prior to the band's last journey to the USA. The sleeve notes are written by Bill MacCormick and feature stunning photographs of the band.

I love Webb, but why can't Cheap Trick have this kind of consistency?.......2006-01-06
It's maddening that we have to wait so long
for great albums like this to come out while
Cheap Trick can put out all the compilations
and DVDs, et, all they want and they are only
three quarters as good as the 'The last of the
Full Grown Man', Mr. Jack-of-All-Media trades,
Webb Wilder. Really this is three albums in one
not just a 'Greatest Hits' or 'Best Of...'.Long
time Wilder fans will notice that there are no
songs from Webb's bigger budget releases like:
Doo Dad and Hybrid Vigor here. But it's OK
since there are no EVEN just-above-average LPs
in the Webb Wilder discography:
1) It Came From Nashvegas,
2) Hybrid Vigor,
3) Doo Dad,
4) Town and Country,
5) Acres of Suede,
6) About Time,
ALL FOUR STAR RELEASES! Pick Up On 'Em!
"three albums in one work their magic from Varese ~ Webb Wilder".......2005-08-06
Varese Records presents "Scattered, Smothered and Covered: A Webb Wilder Overview", reissued tracks of albums from the past "It Came From Nashville" (1993), "Town & Country" (1995) and "Acres of Suede" (1996) all on the Watermelon Records label, featuring the one and only Webb Wilder and his Beatnecks...crazy beat and delivery with a kind of out there performance...his guitar work and stage presence is what grabs you from the git go.
Wilder's mention of the "Rock n' Roll Justice League" gives you a glimpse of what's in store on this cool and do you dig it release with...combining no nonsense rockabilly to create little jewels like "POOLSIDE" and "RUFF RIDER" (Dedicated to Broderick Crawford)." As with early rock, meaningful lyrics make way for a more visceral approach, leading to music that you feel right down to the bottom of your toes..."FLAT OUT GET IT", composed by Webb Wilder with vibes of Chuck Berry bringing the house down with every beat that hits you right between the eyes..."SLOW DEATH", call the doctor for some medication for the fever..."FALL IN PLACE", can't hide from the eye of heaven..."LOUD MUSIC", there's a forty dollar fine down the Rock Island Line for loud music..."THE WEBB WILDER CREDO", real music is out there and real people are makin' it..."HONKY TONK HELL", two many stories I can't tell, too much loss of memory..."I AIN'T LIVING LONG LIKE THIS", don't let 'em take you downtown..."CARRYIN' THE NEWS TO MARY", got to take a look see, to see what I just saw..."NO GREAT SHAKES", close but no cigar, if I tag along will you think I'm playin' dumb..."HOW LONG CAN SHE LAST (GOING FAST)", how long can rock n roll music last playin' that fast..."HORROR HAYRIDE", with shades of "The Ventures" early years..."ONE TASTE OF THE BAIT", can't forget how good she looks, the look is worth the pain of the hook...wild, cool and swingin'...can you dig it?
Hats off to my good friend Bryon Davis (producer) and his co-producers Cary E. Mansfield, R.S. Field and of course Varese Records and our man on the rock and roll caravan of Wilderian liberation...Webb Wilder (wear glasses if you need 'em) created a solid album that harked back to the roots of rock.

Album Description
This album offers a musical overview of the landmark achivements of American composers through the course of the twentieth century. Beginning with Charles Ives it straddles the world of nineteenth-century high romanticism and a fresh voice of the early 1900s while other composers represented, such as Aaron Copland and Leonard Bernstein, span nearly the whole of the twentieth century.
Also featured are works by Michael Tippett, Samuel Barber and George Gershwin. English composer Michael Tippett's settings of three spirituals are surrounded by flute and recorder improvisations in a folk medium.
"American Songfest" represents the first American Boychoir CD to be released under the direction of the choir's new Music Director, Vincent Metallo. John Charles Schucker is the accompanist throughout.
Customer Reviews:
This Album Misses the Mark.......2006-06-17
This offering from the American Boychoir misses the mark of excellence normally associated with this outstanding organization. The improvizations of the recorder and pianist are uninspired. The jazzy interludes "don't mean a thing 'cause it ain't got that swing." The Boychoir's performance is lackluster.
Modern American composer music is, indeed, difficult to sing and interpret. However, most of the tracks uses only one voice, a far cry from the typical S,A or S,S,A,A works the Boychoir normally performs. The voices don't often blend and one can hear individual voices breaching the desired uniform whole. Other works are for soprano and baritone and sound a bit sophomoric. The best tracks are those that make use of the Boychoir's unique talents, but even these are uneven.
There is one track on which a soprano forcefully squeezes out his high notes delivering a jarring performance. Now this could have been on purpose. The Boychoir sometimes does novelty pieces in which outstanding voices imitate less than stellar quality for comic effect. However, normally the listener is prepared for this and can go with it. Here, it was just irritating.
The American Boychoir has many outstanding four and five star performances on disk. I would certainly recommend most of these. Carol is one of the best Christmas albums I've heard. Dixit Dominus is also outstanding. Go with these.

Field recordings are an interesting concept: they are historical documents intended to preserve the folklore of their indigenous regions, but they can also be enjoyed as songs to be heard. If they are too polished or "professional" sounding, they may lose their archaic, authentic charm. On the other hand, who wants to hear amateur singers if they can't carry a tune, much less do so with any kind of emotional power? What makes this collection so rewarding is the precarious balance it finds. Amateur musicologists Anne and Frank Warner collected these field recordings across the Atlantic Coast states from 1940 through 1966. There are English, Scottish, and Irish folk songs, blues, spirituals, ballads, work songs, and chants of all types included--none of them intended for commercial release and all of them featuring singers to whom music was a family tradition or a community event or perhaps even an innate power. Many of these songs have become well known since they were recorded--some, such as "Tom Dooley," were basically discovered through the Warners' field work--but it's the lesser-known numbers that really hit home: "shudder stories" sung to scare young children, comic minstrel songs, sea chanteys, and more. The snippets of conversations prove that the Warners respected these people greatly and reveled in their genuineness. For fans of Alan Lomax's fieldwork, this set will be a treasured discovery. --Marc Greilsamer

Essential Addition To Any Collection.......2000-06-16
This is the first time that material from the Anne and Frank Warner collection has been easily available to the listening public. The Warners collected songs and tunes from singers and players in the Carolina's, New York and New England starting in the 1930's, and the body of material that they brought to the world through their relationships with these tradition bearers forms an important basic framework of folk history. Long hidden away in the Library of Congress, it is at last available for all to enjoy and learn from. Here is where you'll find the original version of "Tom Dooley" (shared by Frank Proffitt) and pure mountain versions of "Whiskey in the Jar" and "Barbara Allen" as well as priceless interview segments with Proffitt and others. These selections were exquisitely chosen, and beautifully remastered and recorded. Whether you have a passing aquaintaince or a deep love of vernacular folk music, put this CD into your collection today.

Customer Reviews:
I was there!.......2006-10-22
I don't know about the quality of this recording as of yet seeing as how I'm only just ordering it today, but I was there for this incredible moment in music. It was Grassroots fest 02' and Justin Hinds was to be on the line-up for the weekend but about a week before the festival, it was released that Justin wouldn't be there cause he wasn't allowed into the country. Needless to say, JBB hit the stage at midnight and began with 1 or 2 songs that would lead into an incredible set and then, out of nowhere, Hinds walks onto stage and we all went crazy. Hinds continued to lead the JBB set for the remainder of the evening and left us all with the feeling that we had just been a part of something amazing. For anyone who was there, this is a must have. For anyone else, this is still a must have.
