true American music.......2007-02-15
The Brandos hail from NYC but sound like they come from some mythical Midwestern Heartland. The group has obviously been influenced by CCR but their sound is more edgey and sharp. Some have referred to their sound as roots rock but I would call it American folk rock. I am a big fan of the Brandos and recommend this release of these two albums offered together. Gunfire at Midnight is a bit darker than Pass the Hat but both discs are awesome and display the musical skill of the band as well as Dave Kincaids' thought provoking lyrics. A no brainer for those already fans or for CCR fans looking for a more modern example of quitessentialy American folk influenced rock n roll.

Pass me some more, please.......2006-12-22
Always orignal and refreshing, the Brando's deliver yet another superb album. 'Pass the Hat' is the ultimate "don't like life get you down" song. 'The Siege' rocks while presenting the complexity of relationships. 'The Other Side' perfectly captures the tone of the divided Germany prior to the fall of the Berlin Wall.

The Brandos are one of those bands that is incapable of producing a dud. I first heard them in the late 80's with the release of HONOR AMONG THIEVES when they were getting a lot of airplay over the local "college" station, and have been an admirer ever since. They may be the best, and most underrated, folk/rock/blues band in the last 20 years and have lanquished in relative obscurity for reasons I can't conprehend. The musicianship on this recording is flawless and Kincaid's vocals are as stong as ever. If you like The Blasters, Phil Alvin or CCR, you'll enjoy everything The Brandos has ever produced. Treat yourself to some fine American music (sorry Blasters).
Do yourself a favour.......2000-05-01
This band deserves all your attention, if you are listning to CCR. Dave Kincaid and Co. are the light of day. With their energy and flair of putting the right song together, you're in for a treat.
Don't Pass.......1999-07-27
They could have been the Next Big Thing--R.E.M. meets CCR--but that's how the "record biz" works. David Kincaid's voice deserves an audience, and you're it: find out why the best music never bubbles to the top of the Billboard 200.

Album Description
Pass The Hat is The Faker Five's first CD release. It features original tunes as well as compositions by Antonio Carlos Jobim, John Coltrane, Errol Garner, Oliver Nelson and Harold Arlen. The Faker Five swings intensely on songs like Impressions and Misty and then plays ballads like Somewhere Over The Rainbow and Stolen Moments with sensitivity, soul and a high level of musicianship. Tom Baker on Sax has his own full sound. John Cain on Guitar and Greg Detroy on keyboards solo beautifully while Kevin Hilll on Bass and Steve Townsend on Drums hold the grooves hard and steady. This is an excellent first effort from a group of musicians who have played together for 25 years.

Customer Reviews:
Delightful.......2006-02-20
I am listening to this cd for the third time now & enjoying it even more. As a late comer to classical music I welcome any door which opens the way to greater appreciation & understanding of a piece, as this cd does. I will return to more classical renditions of the Messiah with more discernment & zest. But I am a simple soul who love Charles Schulz & welcomes adventurous departures from the norm.
Incredibly bad........2005-04-17
What has happened in the world of synthesizer music? Wendy Carlos gave us the equivalent of the Big Bang back in 1969 with Switched On Bach, creating a new world of sonorities never heard before. Isao Tomita came along and took us to unequaled heights of imagination and creativity, world after world of new sounds, fun, and excitement.
Then digital synthesizers came along, and since then everyone's been trying to re-create the sounds of other instruments with them, trying to re-create traditional performances. Why? What is the point in that?
From the back of this CD's box (this is supposed to make you want to buy it--emphasis mine): "XXfirst Century Messiah is a LITERAL TRANSLATION of Handel's Messiah into a new sound experience. Utilizing a confluence of computer-based technologies, Kathy Geisler creates an unusually rich and NATURAL performance. The music on this recording was made from synthesized and sampled sounds, performed without a keyboard, sculpted iteratively, using Macintosh and NeXT computers."
Wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong. Why use the tools that can create a world never heard before to create a pale reflection of the mundane world? Why eschew the use of keyboards?--there is nothing more beautiful than the human touch in a synthesizer performance. Why give us a literal translation of the score into computer sounds?
The choice of excerpts makes no sense, either. Why are there EIGHT recitatives and accompagnatos--all with wordless noises only a baby-step removed from the Peanuts' cartoons' "wah-wah' adult noises--and no Hallelujah Chorus?
In sum, it all comes down to the worst thing I can call any performance: BORING.
