This remake of the 1996 Japanese film that set unlikely box office records in its native country turns more on a sexy, cinematic dance revivalism than the charms of stars Richard Gere and Jennifer Lopez. While its soundtrack never veers far from that noble task, it gratifyingly jolts its familiar rumbas and tango rhythms with a few modern musical kicks all its own. Pussycat Dolls' crisp, sensuous take of the standard "Sway" may subtly juice tradition, but Gotan Project's "Santa Maria" gives those familiar Latin rhythms a downright savory electronica makeover. Producer/arranger John Altman underscores tradition via his versions of chestnuts both lively ("Happy Feet") and ethno-apropos ("Espana Cani," "Perfidia," "Andalucia") and even a suitably schmaltzy cover of Mancini's signature "Moon River." Altman's sturdy musical background helps focus songs as diverse as Peter Gabriel's bittersweet "The Book of Love" and Gizelle O'Cole/Pilar Montenegro's vibrant, modern Latin-inflected title song, Jamie Cullum's club-beat-meets-lounge take on "I Could Have Danced All Night" and Miya's slinky, hip-hop seasoned remake of Bowie's "Let's Dance." --Jerry McCulley

Beautiful, happy music..........2007-06-13
I watched the original Japanese version of this movie first, and enjoyed the cultural feel of it, as well as the elegant dancing. I was worried when I heard they were doing an American remake, but found it to be very enjoyable, capturing the spirit of the original while making it more playable to a western audience. The soundtrack is a major part of the movie, and this CD rendering is very fulfulling. It has most of the major songs used in the movie as both background and actual dance routines. The Pussycat Dolls' take on Dean Martin's "Sway" is particularly catchy and energetic, and makes for a great Cha-Cha (I know this; I've actually danced to it). Also, "Santa Maria (Del Buen Ayre)" by Go Tan Project is a beautiful, sensual, emotionally-charged Tango that will make you want desperately to get up and dance. This soundtrack covers songs with multiple emotions, and is great for listening to, and also, for dancing to. I highly recommend it for lovers of dance, music, or just the movie.
One of the best soundtracks ever........2007-05-01
This soundtrack cought the soul of the movie. I know, sounds cheesy, but if you've seen the movie and it made you want to get up and dance, this is the soundtrack for you! Every song captures the feelings of the movie. I listened to this non-stop for two days straight it seemed. If you loved the movie, it is a must buy!
Great entertanment!.......2007-02-21
I missed this movie when it was released, and caught it late one night
when I was "flicking". It is perfect entertainment--clean, funny, and
thoughtful. For those who say it is "cornpone", I would agree, but that
only makes it more interesting in this age of instant gratification. Go
ahead, take a chance on it. I've shown it to every member of my family-
(and that includes all ages) and they have all loved it.
Direct All Praise To The TRUE Author.......2007-02-04
I am only commenting on this album to make one thing clear: The Book of Love was NOT written by Peter Gabriel (a myth which is so far being perpetuated due to the ignorance of the fools praising Mr. Gabriel's performance). It was written by STEPHIN MERRITT; more specifically, it can be found on Merritt's band, The Magnetic Fields' album, 69 Love Songs, Volume 1. Why Peter Gabriel gets so much credit for turning a beautiful song into a somniferous cacophony is beyond me.
Yes. Go Dancing !.......2007-01-12
I've bought this CD due to Peter Gabriel peformance. Very romantic !
Good musics, good entertainment !
If you like to dance go ahead !!

A judiciously-selected two-CD compendium of Peter Gabriel's finest moments, Hit offers a far more generous windfall than can be found on the only previous Peter Gabriel best-of selection, the 1990 Shaking the Tree. The devil, after all, is in the detail, particularly on the second disc (self-deprecatingly entitled Miss), which really traverses the whole gamut of Peter Gabriel's globally-visioned artistry. It includes recent soundtrack work (the haunting "Cloudless" from Long Walk Home: Music from the Rabbit-Proof Fence), material from 2002's sterling Up ("Signal To Noise", featuring a compelling vocal from the late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and some ominous string arrangements, really does sound like a thinking man's Massive Attack) and goes right back to that fourth album when marrying the reticence of cold, synthesised new wave with insistent African percussion seemed like a good idea (it was). The first disc--including the MTV smash "Sledgehammer", anti-apartheid war cry "Biko", "Big Time" (interesting how the styles of Gabriel and his former group Genesis seem to converge at this time) and "Games Without Frontiers"--really speaks for itself, although with hindsight it seems the single-buying public-at-large had a particular taste for a certain kind of Peter Gabriel record. Universally excellent throughout, the collection is rendered even more desirable by the inclusion of three previously unreleased tracks: a live rendition of "Downside Up", a shorter version of "Blood of Eden" and "Burn You Up, Burn You Down", latterly included on a video game and initially earmarked for the Up album but jettisoned at the last minute. --Kevin Maidment

PETER GABRIEL DARED TO BE DIFFERENT MUSICALLY, ON HIS TERMS AND LEFT HIS MARK IN ROCK HISTORY BECAUSE OF IT!.......2007-07-07
I will be writing a review on the legendary 2-CD greatest hits compilation album entitled "PETER GABRIEL, THE DEFINITIVE TWO CD COLLECTION" by one of Rock's all-time greatest legendary solo artists ever. I give you one of Britain's favorite sons, M-R. P-E-T-E-R G-A-B-R-I-E-L! "PETER GABRIEL, THE DEFINITIVE TWO CD COLLECTION" was originally released in 2003 on Compact Disc on the Geffen Records label which is distributed by Universal Music & Video Distribution Corporation. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary compilation album or the artist, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the overall best informative and most accurate review possible.
PETER GABRIEL will forever go down in Rock n' Roll history and be remembered for singing some of Rock's all-time greatest anthems as the frontman for the legendary band GENESIS. However, his stint with GENESIS would not last very long. GABRIEL would soon quit the band GENESIS favoring and venturing out on his own with a solo career that would definitely prove successful. As a successful solo artist, GABRIEL will also forever be remembered for composing and recording some of the 80's all-time greatest Rock anthems ever. With this in mind, GABRIEL would record many great hit songs and albums as a successful solo artist during the period from the 1977-2003 years. In my opinion, in 1986, GABRIEL would deliver to Rock n' Roll one of the 80's unforgettable all-time greatest anthems ever. I'm talking about the legendary Rocker "Sledgehammer" released in 1986. What ROBERT PALMER did in 1985 with his legendary 80's Rock anthem "Addicted To Love," PETER GABRIEL would do the exact same thing with "Sledgehammer" in 1986. Which now brings me to the legendary compilation album I'm about to review for all of you today. "PETER GABRIEL, THE DEFINITIVE TWO CD COLLECTION" chronicles and highlights all of the great hit songs that PETER GABRIEL composed and recorded during the 1977-2003 period. In my opinion, this legendary compilation is without a doubt, a true testament of the brilliance and musical creativity of a masterminded genius. This legendary compilation album is also a fine fitting tribute to a great legendary artist that was truly indeed, far ahead of his time. This is the tales in the life of MR. PETER GABRIEL, his music is his story that speaks for itself.
It is now time to let the Rock n' Roll music of PETER GABRIEL to speak for itself and back it up musically as he originally truly intended for it to be. DISC ONE of "PETER GABRIEL, THE DEFINITIVE TWO CD COLLECTION" begins with the soothing synthesized and acoustic turned mild Rocker "Solsbury Hill," the forever GABRIEL stamped trademark 80's anthem "Shock The Monkey," the forever GABRIEL stamped trademark 80's Rock anthem "Sledgehammer," the beautifully slow heavenly and uplifting synthesized number "Don't Give Up," the groundbreaking synthesized mild Rocker "Games Without Frontiers," the danceable synthesized mild Rocker "Big Time," the bass pounding synthesized Rocker "Burn You Up, Burn You Down," the incredible bass pounding synthesized Rocker "Growing Up," the amazing synthesized slow/medium Rocker "Digging In The Dirt," the beautifully slow and well arranged synthesized number "Blood Of Eden," the powerfully mild and synthesized slow masterpiece "More Than This," this is one of GABRIEL'S many great experimental songs that succeeded, "Biko," the breathtaking synthesized Rocker "Steam," the beautifully slow turned medium/fast and well arranged 80's Rock anthem, "Red Rain" and the beautifully slow number with the accompaniment of the piano, "Here Comes The Flood." END OF DISC ONE.
DISC TWO takes right where DISC ONE left off with the incredibly sounding and synthesized slow song "San Jacinto," the fantastic synthesized, bass pounding Progressive Rocker "I Don't Remember," another great GABRIEL experimental song that was successful, "The Rhythm Of The Heat," the beautifully slow/medium smooth song "Loved To Be Loved," the slow synthesized number turned into a mild danceable Rocker "I Grieve," the incredibly sounding synthesized number "Family Snapshot," the slow synthesized "In Your Eyes," another beautiful slow song with the piano arrangement, "The Drop," the incredibly sounding synthesized Progressive rocker "The Tower That Ate People," the slow and smooth bass pounding and synthesized number "Lovetown," another beautifully slow song with the synthesizer and piano, "Father, Son," the name of this song is self explanatory and says it all, "Signal To Noise," the incredible live recording sung with Melanie Gabriel, "Downside Up" and the smooth synthesized and acoustic mild song "Cloudless." END OF DISC TWO. May I also add that PETER GABRIEL'S voice was perfect and on fire while laying down the vocal tracks for all of these hit songs. In my opinion, listening to all of GABRIEL'S songs makes me wonder why he ever left GENESIS. GENESIS' music sounds very similar to GABRIEL'S. Even PHIL COLLINS' solo recordings sound like GENESIS and GABRIEL'S. Whatever the reason may be, all of their music sounds great.
In my opinion, this music collection or at least on DISC TWO, this type of music might not go well with the majority of the youth today, I MAY BE WRONG. There are great hit songs on this legendary album worthy of checking out. If you like GENESIS or PHIL COLLINS, you can definitely relate to and get into the sounds and music of PETER GABRIEL. I would like to recommend purchasing this 2-CD compilation album to own as a valuable and important part of his or her own personal music collection. In doing this, you will have taken a giant step in owning and starting your very own personal PETER GABRIEL music collection. You can do all of your album purchases either on Amazon com or at your nearest local Borders Books and Music store.
In closing, PETER GABRIEL has successfully continued in recording and releasing new albums along with touring and performing to sell-out audiences the world over up to this very day. In my opinion, Rock n' Roll needs someone like PETER GABRIEL to come up with mindblowing sounds and music that is new, fresh and original to floor his fans and audiences with. What I admire about PETER GABRIEL is that he doesn't copy anyone else's music, his music has and always will be different and original. Knowing this, GABRIEL'S musical creativity formula has proven to be successful and I know for fact that PETER GABRIEL is here to stay and isn't going anywhere anytime soon. I also get the feeling that GABRIEL still feels that he truly needs to give and deliver more incredible creative music to the whole world. PETER GABRIEL has forever left his place and mark in Rock n' Roll history and his many contributions, accomplishments and achievements will never be forgotten or denied. There will also be many new tales and stories in the GABRIEL legend and legacy that will still need to be written in pages and chapters. But that, my fellow readers and reviewers, you will just have to stay tuned and read further more about it at a later date. So here's to you PETER. Thanks for the many great memories and moments with many more still yet to come. Keep Persevering. Keep The Faith. And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY," need I say more? Thanks for reading my review and I truly hope that you have enjoyed reading it as much as I have truly enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also deeply hope that all of you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. PETER GABRIEL RULES! Long Live Rock n' Roll. Rock out always and take it easy. Forever in Rock, John L.
perhaps a good into to Gabriel....?.......2007-04-14
Going back to Genesis in the early 70's I've been a big fan of Gabriel. If you've heard any of these tunes on the radio, or otherwise, you might want to start with this hit 2 CD offering. Can't comment on the bad engineering since I do not have this CD (no need since I have most all of Peter's previous offerings. Always great production and interesting textures, lyrics, arrangements in Gabriel's music. A few of my top album choices would be UP, SO, melted face, 1st album w/ salsbury hill. He's even better in concert...Amazing is the word.
One Of The Great Gifted Artists Of Our Times.......2007-03-24
You will probably never hear a more diverse and consistently brilliant Hits collection than this tour de force from Peter Gabriel. Most of his best known songs (not all, alas) are here: Biko, Don't give up, Steam, Solisbry Hill, Games without frontiers, Sledgehammer etc are all on Disc 1 which is subtitled: HIT. But it is Disc 2, subtitled MISS that is more rewarding as it showcases songs like Rhythm of the Heat, Family Snapshot, Cloudless, Downside Up, Father Son and San Jacinto. Two new tracks are BURN YOU UP BURN YOU DOWN (good funky stuff!) and CLOUDLESS (sublime reworking of the song SKY BLUE featuring vocals from the Blind Boys From Alabama)
There are always songs you would like to see on a Hits package and some that could be jettisoned and this album is no exception. I cannot understand why SHAKING THE TREE is not included. This is a song he co-wrote with Youssou N'Dour and there is a remastered version on his earlier hits album, also called Shaking The tree. It is a wonderful song in praise of Women with a gentle voal by Gabriel. Must be a legal reason or maybe a falling out with Youssou. One of his classic songs: IN YOUR EYES is buried on the MISS side and that is on the USA version. It is not even included on the European version. That is an amazing oversight. Also songs like LOVE TO BE LOVED from US is reather boring and does not belong here. He could have included from the same album, KISS THAT FROG, COME TALK TO ME or SECRET WORLD, especially the live version which way surpasses the studio version. Also SKY BLUE or an edited version of THE BARRY WILLIAMS SHOW from UP might have been a better selection than I GRIEVE. It would have been great to merge SKY BLUE and CLOUDLESS together for one magnificent closing track. The really weird THE TOWER THAT ATE PEOPLE, LOVETOWN and THE DROP could also have been left off so earlier PG material could have been presented. INTRUDER is not included and nothing from Peter Gabriel 2, although DIY is on the European version as is NO SELF CONTROL and I HAVE THE TOUCH. There are cut versions of some songs which actually help in the case of BLOOD OF EDEN, GROWING UP and MORE THAN THIS. Maybe STEAM could have been edited also as it is on the long side. Hopefully an anthology is on the way to encompass all relevant Peter Gabriel tracks.
BAD Remaster.......2007-02-17
While I ordered this set primarily for the song selection (I only had "So") I was eagerly awaiting the newly remastered sound.
Friggin' HORRIBLE remaster job. I can compare sledgehammer from this set and from "So" side by side and this set's version sounds awful. The mastering guy cranked all of the mid-range and treble up way too high and ruined almost every song on here. There is a major peak from 2Khz-6Khz. I get a headache after about 10 minutes of listening. Extremely harsh sounding vs. the softer orignal recording.
What a dissappointment. This thing will sit on the shelf. I have had this bad experience with more than a few remasters. If you are any type of audiophile, skip this and try to find the originals. Bummer.
Good Music.......2007-01-04
I am a Peter Gabriel fan, good music, If they put all the songs that were great on 1 cd or even 2 thier will be little money to be made.
I listen and enjoy this set.

So is generally regarded as a peak in Peter Gabriel's recording career, notable both for its solid set of songs and lush production. For Gabriel, who'd been putting his music in theatrical contexts ever since his days with Genesis, the modern sound of So (coproduced with Daniel Lanois) was a dramatic conceit that effectively played off the organic roots of many of its songs. The album's big hit was "Sledgehammer," the English rocker's somewhat stilted take on the Stax/Volt style of rhythm & blues. Gabriel is much more powerful on his own art-rock songs, such as "Red Rain," which evokes nuclear ruin with its cascading rush of guitars and synthesizers. "Don't Give Up" is perhaps Gabriel's best ballad, with Kate Bush's heavenly second vocal enough to give anybody encouragement. But the song that best exploits So's blend of technology and soul is "In Your Eyes," a beguiling rhythmic tapestry in which Gabriel duets with Youssou N'Dour. --John Milward

Former Genesis frontman Gabriel's arguable finest hour as a solo artist 20 plus years later.......2007-06-22
Former Genesis frontman Peter Gabriel released his fifth studio solo album So in May of 1986.
1986 was the year of Genesis past and present. Ex-Genesis guitarist Steve Hackett released his hit collaboration with Yes guitarist Steve Howe called GTR's self-titled album. Also, Hackett and Gabriel's ex-colleages which were the rest of Genesis (Phil collins, Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford) released the hugely successful Invisible Touch under the Genesis moniker.
A month before Invisible Touch, Gabriel released So which was a year in the making but was well worth the time it took to create this now classic to rock history.
Gabriel and his supreme team of session players, including the reliable Tony Levin on bass, David Rhodes on guitar plus Police drummer Stewart Copeland and drummers Manu Katche and Rick Marotta.
The thunderous "Red Rain" is a stellar opener to this album and is possibly his best solo track. Next is the smash hit "Sledgehammer" (with Gabriel going a bit funky on the R&B thing) and was rightfully a #1 hit. Ironically, it KO-ed his ex-bandmembers' "Invisible Touch" single out of #1 in the US. Also this track's video was groundbreaking with its animation effects. Next is the excellent duet with Kate Bush called "Don't Give Up" (w/ Kate Bush) which is a stellar song and one of the best duets I ever heard. we end the first half with the atmospheric sounding "That Voice Again" which was a rock radio hit yet didn't get released to pop radio.
"Mercy Street" starts the second half off (it was "In Your Eyes" but Gabriel changed the CD tracklisting for the remaster) and is a nice piece. We follow with another big hit called "Big Time" which featured Stewart Copeland on drums and was also known for its classic video. The original vinyl album's closer "We Do What Were Told" is reminiscent of Gabriel's darker material. It's brief, lyrically simple, but very, very haunting. The original CD and cassette closer "This Is The Picture" is a terrific, light-groove collaboration with avant-garde artist Laurie Anderson which combined singing with spoken word, and the funky guitar of Nile Rodgers. The original album's second half opener and now album closer "In Your Eyes" is the album's most well known hit. This track was a #1 on US rock radio and is a nice love song and featured The Call's Michael Been and Simple Minds frontman Jim Kerr on backing vocals plus African singer Y'oussor N'Dour helping out at the end.
So became peter gabriel's biggest selling solo album reaching #2 on the Billboard album charts and has sold FIVE million copies to date in the US alone. The album was nominated for the Grammy for Album Of The Year, but it lost to Paul Simon's Graceland (why in the Blue Hell was this dude still winning Grammies when he was past his prime). However, Gabriel did win Video of the Year for "Sledgehammer" which ironically beat his old Genesis mates' "Land of Confusion" video. Aside sales, So proved Peter Gabriel was a force to be recoked with.
RECOMMENDED!
not only popular but excellent.......2007-06-17
Luis Mejia (son)- Peter Gabriel have shown us that he can stay on the map even after quiting a band such famous as Genesis, and this album shout that on every song. This album has everything; Rock pieces like Red Rain, a song full of emotions about a dream of swimming on red water, pop songs like Sledgehammer, an incredibly famous song with a stunning music video whic won 6 prices on the MTV music awards of that time, Don't Give Up, that is also on the vocals with Kate Bush, In Your Eyes, his most famous love song, Mercy Street, Big Time, a catchy, fun and cheerful song alike with Sledgehammer; the album also contains new experimentations seen before in Security (The Family And The Fishing Net, San Jacinto) like We Do What We're Told (Milgram 37) about the famous experiment of Stanley Milgram, That Voice Again and This Is The Picture (Excellent Birds).
It has everything and the album will be frozen in time as Peter Gabriel's best album.
Be sure to get the Remastered version!.......2007-05-28
GABRIEL'S BLOCKBUSTER ALBUM.
RUINED BY MEDIOCRE SOUND QUALITY, KNOCKING A FIVE STAR CLASSIC DOWN TO THREE STARS. DO NOT BUY THE ORIGINAL, BUT GET THE REMASTERED VERSION INSTEAD.
Released in 1986, this was Gabriel's blockbuster album. And it deserved it. This is just great from beginning to end. It features great collaborations with Kate Bush and Laurie Anderson.
Unfortunately, coming out in 1986, the CD sound quality was mediocre. This was very suprising for Gabriel who had embraced digital technology years earlier. The sound is flat with limited dynamic range.
Many of the early CD's had mediocre sound quality, which gave rise to the vinyl snobs who thought CD's could never sound as good as LP's. But, it was just a bad translation to the digital technoology. Today, CD's sound much better than they did 20 years ago. Which is why you see so many "remaatered" CD's today. That includes the complete Gabriel catalog.
Not only being the most popular Gabriel CD, it is his best. That is saying a lot since, he has had many very good CD's.
Great album again from PG.......2007-03-15
The very good tracks on this cd are "Red Rain" and "Mercy Street"
Great commercial success with "Sledgehammer", "Don't give up", "In your eyes" and "Big Time"..These four songs have been heard to often maybe, but still good occasionnaly to listen to. Two weak songs close the album, "We do what we're told" and "This is the picture", I go with four star for this album.

Peter Gabriel has never been one to stand on tradition. The former Genesis singer bends and hammers fashionable pop forms to his liking (à la his massive MTV-fueled hit "Sledgehammer") or uses the obligatory soundtrack assignment to explore the world music that has been his obsession for decades (as in "Zaar" from Passion). This 16-track anthology explores the width--and, crucially, depth--of Gabriel's rich post-Genesis music, from the post-prog obliquities of "Solsbury Hill" and "Here Comes the Flood" to the African musical and political concerns of the title track (available only on this collection) and the epic "Biko." But what makes the compilation even more compelling is the way it eschews the chronology of its decade-plus body of music, instead weaving and segueing Gabriel's music into a tapestry of compelling mood and color. It's a rewarding listening experience for fan and novice alike. --Jerry McCulley

Great collection of hit but..........2007-03-15
If you are a great fan like me and already have all the cd collection, there's no need for this one. You already have most of it, what is missing is "Shaking the tree"... there is a better version of it on "Secret World Live", a piano version of "Here comes the flood" ... there is a better version on Growing up Live (DVD) what's left is a new mix of "I have the touch" and "Zaar" which is not a memorable song.
Be aware also that some of the songs have been edited to a shorter version.
I would add that the hits are not the best songs of Peter Gabriel, the rest of his material is better. This cd is for completist or for someone who want to own only one cd of the artist (which is a mistake !)
This CD is really awsome!!.......2007-01-18
I love Peter Gabriel's music. This CD is a wonderful collection of his best. I would highly recommend it!!!
I didn't say anything..........2006-07-17
I got no means to show identification
I got no papers show you what I am
You'll have to take me just the way that you find me
What's gone is gone and I do not give a damn
Empty stomach, empty head
Previously, I reviewed Kate Bush's The Whole Story, which I picked up, used, to take with me on my recent trip to China. The other used CD I picked up for the trip was Peter Gabriel's Shaking the Tree - Sixteen Golden Greats. Released between his albums So (which I own on audiotape) and Us, this greatest hits collection thereby focuses on Gabriel's earlier career, and tries to "spread the love" a little evenly between all his early albums...which means that the over-played hit song "In Your Eyes" is missing here. Also missing are a few great hits from the later album Us, including "Digging in the Dirt" and "Steam" (good thing I own Us already).
What is here are a collection of great songs. New favourites for me: "I Don't Remember", "Games Without Frontiers", and "Family Snapshot".
I'm not particularly interested in going back and picking up all of the Peter Gabriel albums that ever were, so this collection fills my need quite well, giving me an overview of Gabriel's early career.
Most of the tracks on this one "will shake you " all over.......2006-02-06
Peter Gabriel as a soloartist is quality all over. This "greatest hits" collection, gives you most of the best. To kick of with Solsbury Hill (Track 1) is a wise choise. There`s an uplifting mood all trough the song. It`s simple in it`s build up, and easy to humm along to. Track 2 , I dont remember im sorry to say to "experimental" in a way. To much "blip blop" synth sound, spread all over, and has to much hit`s and misses. But hey soon we are back in business again with Sledgehammer Track 3. Gabriel voice is clear, and has a great rythm and syntheseisers to follow it. Track 4 Family Snapshot is a slow song, which doesn`t take of in the right direction. It has a form of "talking singing" which sometimes is annoying to listen to. Track 5 Mercy Street is moody and very relaxable to listen to. Track 6 Shaking the tree, with Youssou N Dour on vocal has an "african touch" over it, with what we can call "ethnic rythm and vocal" which realy fits as an whole all trough. Track 7 Don`t give up, is anyway the best Gabriel song on this CD. To bring in Kate Bush on vocal t take`s this
one "heaven above" when it come`s to uplifting musical soulfood for your mind. Mindfood in other words. Im sure this one has cured some depression`s, in a cold cold world.
Track 8 San Jancinto, we are back in the departments of "weird sounds and blip blop", but it`s an ok listen. Track 9 Here come`s the flood is very moody and relaxable, and give
you some "freeze" down your back. Track 10 Red Rain, has
a certain quality, but it`s to much instrument`s fighting for theire place in a way. But the melody is good, and easy to remember.. Track 11 Games without frontiers, is one of the weak tracks. Easily forgotten, sorry to say. Track 12 Shock the monkey. Hey, that`s a another story. This one kicks in gear on the first note, and get`s better and better until the end.. Track 13 I have the touch, it`s to experimental for my sake. I don`t find the touch on this one. Track 14 Big Time
is ok. Track 15 Zaar is a weird one. Very experimental with i think everything you can find on syntheseisers sound at the end of the eightes. It`s sound`s sometimes like an early computer goes mad. Not my cup of tea. Track 16 Biko, he`s back in the jungle, with good lyrics, but soundwise it does`nt stand out. Anyway most of the tracks on this one will you put you in great mood As an introduction to Peter Gabriel for "newcomers" this one has it all.(most of the time).
Great music but not a great compilation of Peter Gabriel.......2006-01-14
Peter Gabriel is in my humble opinion a monument in the rock scene, from his days in Genesis to his solo work. Gabriel has two compilations out on his solo work, this one and 2003's 2 CD "Hit: The Definitive Peter Gabriel" (which is far from definitive).
"Shaking the Tree" (16 tracks, 77 min.) was originally released in 1990 and is now available in remastered sound. But is it a good compilation? Alas, it is not. That said, there is a lot of great music on here. There are 5 tracks from Gabriel's 1986's commercial breakthrough album "So", but "In Your Eyes", a major hit is not on here. Even more troubling is that there is not a single track from 1978's "Peter Gabriel 2": no "On The Air" and no "D.I.Y.", both hits, as minor they were. (As an aside, PG2 was equally ignored entirely for the 2003 "Hit" compilation. I guess Peter doesn't like that album?) For die-hard Gabriel fans (count me one), the reason to own this is the inclusion of "Shaking the Tree", a "Biko"-like song you can't find anywhere but here, and the new recording of "Here Comes the Flood", as a piano-and-vocals only cover, just great.
It is clear to me that the definitive Peter Gabriel "best of" is still to be released. Both this album and 2003's "Hits" have serious flaws. That said, there is no question there is a lot of great music on here. As to "Shaking the Tree": only for die-hard Gabriel fans.

To call Passion a pivotal recording in the development of world music would be a significant understatement. What makes Passion so undeniably important is its global reach and expert handling of what could've easily become polyglot babble. Vocalists Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Youssou N'Dour, and Baaba Maal bring strong Middle Eastern and African voices to the project, and Balkan textures come via the ney flute and doudouk. But Gabriel is the glue, offering electronic ambient flows between the multiple streams. Gabriel also brings something even less tangible: an awesome visual imagination that takes often seamless sounds and makes them impress the listener with picturelike colors and phrasing. This is, however, far more than an ambient global mix. The intertwined rhythms stand out, both on their own and as brushstrokes on a larger canvas. Never mind that Passion helped launch North American careers for N'Dour and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan--this is a stellar musical achievement by any standard. --Andrew Bartlett

Changed my musical tastes forever.......2007-05-14
This album is really as good as everyone says. For those who are religiously inclined you may even feel God while listening to it. Believe me. Peter Gabriel had to have been inspired by a higher power while making it, bringing together a collection of music backgrounds as never done before, a musical 'patron saint'. In the process he has no doubt made the world a better place, by allowing dissimilar cultures to come together and share a common musical bond. To call it his Opus is a woeful understatement. In a hundred years this album will still be remembered as a defining achievement in music. If only we could bring the world together so well and so often, through music. This was my first foray into world music when I bought this in 1989 while in college. It was my first ever CD and I still have it today. Without a doubt it changed my tastes in music forever. I'm still dumbfounded why this man has not been elected to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Passion For The Passion.......2007-04-15
I often find "World Music" dreary when kept in its glass case. It becomes a preservation activity: record X from Y before He/She dies and their Music Is Lost Forever. Whilst this is worthy, it isn't necessarily worthwhile listening to something recorded only because it is going to rust away otherwise.
With "Passion" (the soundtrack to Scorcese's "The Last Temptation Of Christ"), Peter Gabriel succeeds brilliantly in creating a work indebted to World Musicians and yet stamped with his own mark: therefore the album lives and breathes as a work in its own right rather than a fossil of the past or a foreign country. He achieves this by using a strongly north African rhythmical approach coupled with the work of musicians on traditional Middle Eastern string instruments, always focusing on structure to build elements of texture into (rather than onto) each track. Exceptions to this are the stately choral version of "With This Love" and the soaring Western/Middle Eastern hybrid "It Is Accomplished".
With "Passion", Gabriel achieved the difficult task of giving voice to ancient music rather than reverentially keeping it in a case, to be merely caged and catalogued.
Superior to The Passion of the Christ soundtrack .......2007-02-16
I recently purchased both The Passion of the Christ soundtrack and Peter Gabriel's Passion. I really wanted to like The Passion of the Christ score, as I loved the movie. Regrettably, John Debney's music is so much like Peter Gabriel's superb Passion soundtrack, used in 1988's The Last Temptation of Christ that it becomes a farce. It even uses Gabriel's long-time collaborator, vocalist and double violinist Shankar, whose unique sound was also used on Gabriel's Passion. The producers also used a piece from Gabriel's Rabbit Proof Fence soundtrack for The Passion's 2003 teaser trailer. There's no doubt that Debney has copied Gabriel. Also the highlight of The Passion of the Christ is a theme virtually identical to one from John William's Born on the Fourth of July soundtrack.
So buy Gabriel's Passion over The Passion of the Christ, it is a magnificent score and far more original.
An Antti Keisala Comment: Also They Saw God.......2007-02-05
I have started this voyage of commentary by picking up the ones that are close to my heart, but now we're really arriving to the true centre. This album is perhaps the quintenessential album in my short life, the soundtrack of my life, only perhaps a few other albums (namely from Rubinstein or Pärt) slightly echoing the massive impressions it continually paints. As a Gabriel fan in general I still feel this is his best work, the most intimate testament to his skill not only as a musician, but also as a poet.
I don't like the Scorsese film for cinematic reasons alone, and the tapestries of sound drown the images of the film so thoroughly that what breathes through is the visual aspect of Gabriel's music instead of Scorsese's 'images'. And I have seen the film more than a few times (and am still waiting for the likes of Greenaway, Medem and Malick) to change the way we think of the subject cinematically. But how could I ever feel sad that I couldn't make myself like the film, when what it brought to me was an album like this?
Through the perspective of music history and especially through the evolution and migration of world music to the Western world this is already a significant album in itself. So it has merits. But what it has is the original spirit, the passion in the other sense of the word, to create, to express. And it has personal risk written all over it, made by an artist at the peak of his popularity and then taking the chance and making a small record like this. Once again something that I would already applaud for itself alone. This is passion for music, for the urge to create.
One wonderful property of great art is that it takes us along to participate in the creative process, paints an image of it and folds us around it as it encompasses our own space. "The Feeling Begins" and "A Different Drum" remain as the penultimate spiritual chants only succeeded by Gabriel's "Cloudless" in echoing the flowing rhythm of a ritual invocation, reaching from some artificially distant place inside our soul into our soul in this time and place. There is illusion, there is enchantment, there is magic, there is power, there are miracles. And it still, to this day, makes me believe. Not only is this the soundtrack of a whole life, it is, ironically, the soundtrack, a backdrop of inspiration, to any ideal full reading of the Gospels or Psalms I do. Uplifting, life-altering, everything that's from and in between. And I think of Whitmanian ease of being, as he whispers in 'Song of Myself': "Swiftly arose and spread around me the peace and knowledge/that pass all the argument of the earth,/And I know that the hand of God is the promise of my own,/And I know that the spirit of God is the brother of my own'. These kind of albums to which you can invest your own soul aren't experiences for experiences' sake, but things to cherish life for.
And I am thankful.
With best regards,
AK
The peak of musical achievement.......2006-12-03
Peter Gabriel has come a long way in his musical career. He was the lead vocalist for the prog-rock band Genesis from 1969-1974, during which time the group released some of the finest rock albums ever recorded. Since releasing his first solo album in 1977, Gabriel has never ceased experimenting, determined not to settle on one sole sound. It was on PASSION, however, that Gabriel's musical journey finally reaches its peak.
PASSION is the "soundtrack" to Martin Scorsese's controversial epic THE LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST, released in 1988 to mixed reviews. The one thing that reviewers could agree on was that Peter Gabriel's score for the film was magnificent. Gabriel held off releasing his score simultaneously with the film; instead, he did a wonderful thing: he went back to the studio and expanded his original material, thus ensuring that PASSION would work as well as an album as it would as a soundtrack.
It certainly does. In fact, PASSION works so well on its own that many of its avid fans haven't even seen THE LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST. That's because, in my opinion, THE LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST is a very good film - but PASSION is a masterpiece. In these circumstances, "masterpiece" seems like far too weak an adjective to apply to this album, and none of the countless other adjectives seem powerful enough either. Let me say this: PASSION IS music. This is as good as music gets. This is the very definition of music. If you give PASSION, an album that sounds vastly different from the music we westerners are used to and nothing like any of Gabriel's other recordings, a chance, you will experience the most powerful album I have ever heard.
PASSION is THE landmark world music album. Peter Gabriel, a long-time fan of middle eastern music, decided to base his music for Scorsese's film around the music of the eiddle east, resulting in a highly-unusual listening experience for westerners. Gabriel recruited some of the finest musicians in the world for this album, and also thoroughly researched middle eastern music, as well as the songs that are said to have existed around the time of Jesus. With all this, the album should sound like a traditional work, but Gabriel himself plays numerous modern instruments, giving certain songs some extra power and creating a dreamily ambient feeling throughout most of the album. The result is one of the most timeless musical works ever recorded.
There's something about the album that really speaks to your soul. It leaves you feeling open, exposed, a feeling that's more than a little unsettling at first, but upon listening further, you come to embrace this openness. PASSION truly touches you, and certain tracks even elevate you. My favorite tracks from the album are "A Different Drum" and "It Is Accomplished", the two most powerful pieces of music I have ever heard.
It's no easy feat describing PASSION. I can only urge you, strongly, to purchase it and give it a few listens. I guarantee you have never experienced anything like it. It's utterly incredible that the soundtrack to THE LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST could wind up so absolutely magnificent as this, but it did. Peter Gabriel is a musical genius, and PASSION remains by far his finest achievement. It is, without a doubt, the peak of musical achievement.

An epic production highlighted by the clockwork undertones of "Intruder" and the Afro-prog-rock of "Biko," the third in Peter Gabriel's trilogy of eponymous solo titles is a watermark of the former Genesis singer's career. Drummer Jerry Marotta's tight global-groove templates drive the edgy guitar pastiches of Robert Fripp, David Rhodes, Paul Weller, and XTC's Dave Gregory. Yielding the enigmatic 1980 hit "Games Without Frontiers," the Steve Lillywhite-produced opus travels the dark psychic corners of its narrator with a then-profoundly futuristic sound that's no less compelling than Bowie's Scary Monsters, which was released the same year. The cover may depict Gabriel's melting face, but the album marks Gabriel's arrival as a solid solo artist. --James Rotondi

Progressive New Wave.......2007-05-28
Released in 1980, this came out when artistic music was moving from a progressive rock sound to new wave. This album reflects that transition.
Released before CD technology, this album is 45 minutes long. The sound quality of the original CD was OK. But, I can see (hear) where this remastered version might be somewhat better.
This is Gabriel's third solo album. Like all previous two albums, the title is simply "Peter Gabriel". People would call it "Melt" because of his slurred picture and to distinquish it from the earlier two albums. Gabriel's fourth album would also be title "Peter Gabriel" everywhere in the world, except the US, where it would be called "Security".
This album has a transitional sound between progressive rock and new wave. It sounds a lot like the new wave music that would be comeing out of the UK in the early eighties, especiall Tears For Fears.
Many people consider this to be Gabriel's best album. But, I think it sounds a bit dated, especially when you compare it to the sensational So. Still I think it is a very good album.
Gabriel does begin to show the marks of maturity and significant song writing with Biko. This is the type of song and music he would carry on in future albums.
Truely great.......2007-05-07
Other than stating the obvious that this is a masterpiece, a landmark, Gabriel at his solo best, the only thing that prevents me from giving it 5 stars (what it truely deserves) is even though the recording is clear with excellent soundstaging, its lacking in base extension. One might disagree and say that there is a lot of base and yes there is, but it's all in the upper base. There is none in the lower registers. This takes away some of the power and authority that this music demands. But taken into perspective of the greatness of this music, it's a minor nit pic.
3.......2007-04-21
"Peter Gabriel" (3, 1980) is a pretty fine introduction to Peter Gabriel's solo career, and there are some great tracks, with contributions by some fine musicians (Phil Collins on drums in "Intruder", Robert Fripp on guitar in "I Don't Remember", Tony Levin on bass, Kate Bush doing backup vocals on "No Self Control, etc). It's got a big sound, and it's worth a listen. It's not my favorite album though, there's just something about it that is a little offputting in the way some of the tracks go, though I can't quite say what it is.
My favorite tracks would have to be "Intruder" which is pretty creepy, "No Self Control" (especially the middle bit), the bittersweet instrumental "Start", the upbeat "I Don't Remember" and the tragic buildup of "Family Snapshot". Basically the first half of the album I really like. "Games Without Frontiers" isn't too bad either.
The booklet of the remaster contains full lyrics and images from the era of the album.
Peter Gabriel - His Best Solo Album.......2007-04-05
To me this is the album where Gabriel really got it together as a solo artist. In my opinion it is his best solo work with rock solid material throughout the whole thing. From a songwriting perspective the album contains some of Gabriel's best lyrics and the music, although not as dynamic as his Genesis days, comes across as a perfect fit with the dramatic vocals and lyrics. Musically the thing that really stands out on this disc is the percussion. Gabriel made the decision that his drummers would not use any cymbals on this disc which lends the percussion a unique quality. The drumming duties were shared by Jerry Marotta and Phil Collins consistently coming across as loud and booming, a style that Gabriel would incorporate throughout the rest of his career. The overall percussion work on this disc is really outstanding. The album also sees Gabriel making his first forays into "world" music, which he would explore in much more detail later in his career. Once again, the tribal percussion aspect of these tracks is a highlight. The songs on the album are consistently great. Highlights include the album opener "Intruder" a truly creepy song about a burglar who obviously loves his job. Next is "No Self-Control", another great song that pretty much describes periods of my own life. "I Don't Remember" was an AOR hit and a great little rocker with that booming drum sound. "Family Snapshot" seems to be a portrait of a presidential assassin (Lee Harvey Oswald maybe?) until the song gets to the final few lines where we find out that it is really just a young child playing a fantasy in his own mind, in desperate need of attention. Is this a foreshadowing of what the child will be as an adult? The song is a prime example of Gabriel at his absolute best. "And Through The Wire" could possibly be a sequel to "On The Air" from the previous album. "Games Without Frontiers" was another AOR radio hit that reduces the act of war to a children's game. It is another brilliant track. "Not One Of Us" can be related to by anyone who has been considered an outsider and is another great track. The album closes with "Biko" which presents an historical account of the death of South African freedom fighter Stephen Biko who was killed while imprisoned. It is a powerful piece of music that resonates to this day. Gabriel 3 is the man at his absolute best. If you are looking to explore Gabriel's solo albums this would be a great place to start. Personally I do not think he has done anything better.
Amazing Album.......2007-03-31

After three eponymous discs noteworthy for their thematic richness and musical experimentation, Peter Gabriel yielded to conventional wisdom by actually titling this 1982 successor. In every other respect, however, Security was another stride beyond the progressive-rock terrain Gabriel had explored from Genesis forward. Most crucially, he goes deeper into the heart of world music and further investigates the African sources first invoked on the prior album's magisterial track, "Biko." Security is steeped in polyrhythms, sculpted with synthesizers, and detailed with percussive textures set to a low boil beneath Gabriel's yearning vocals. Its themes of transcendence and identity, and contrasts of modern isolation with primordial community, reverberate through "Lay Your Hands on Me," "I Have the Touch," "The Rhythm of the Heat," and "San Jacinto." And in "Shock the Monkey," the set's initial hit, Gabriel portentously stands dance rhythms on their head in a troubling, funny riff on the mammal within. --Sam Sutherland
Customer Reviews:
Gabriel's rhythmic album.......2007-05-28
Released in 1982, this is Gabriel's fourth solo album. In the US, it was released as "Security". In the rest of the world, it was called "Peter Gabriel", the same title his first three albums had. Even on the US version, it is hard to find the title "Security".
This is an all digital recording and the sound quality is pretty good. For some reason, the original had better sound quality than So, which wa released four years later. There is now a remastered version. I don't know if it is worth getting if you have the original, but there was room for sound quality improvements.
This is Gabriel's more into rhythmic and "world music" sounds. There is much reliaance on a percussive sound and a driving beat.
The sound is much different than the first three Gabriel albums, which were more a progressive and new wave sound. This was turning point for Gabriel, and all of his later albums would continue in this vein.
There a number of excellent, long and deliberate songs, with strong driving beats.
This ablum introduces a new formula for hit making for Gabriel, with his first big hit, Shock the Monkey. This same formula would be repeated later with Sledgehammer (driven by an MTV video), Steam and Kiss That Frog.
This album was supported by a concert tour which is feature on the live album, called "Plays Live". It is the best live album Gabriel has released. This is mainly due to the fact that the songs on Security translate well to a live show.
A perfect score.......2007-03-16
This cd is the best in Gabriel, strange, enigmatic and amazing sound texture. My choice for the best of the cd would be "San Jacinto", "The family and the fishing net", "Lay your hand on me" and "Wallflower".
I still remember the tour for this release, it was so special when Peter enter the stage, not from behind but in front of it, passing through the crowd at the other end of the Québec Coliseum until he reach the stage, maybe ten minutes later...the crowd just went crazy. Amazing concert, just like this cd ! Greatly done !
His masterpiece........2007-03-04
Peter Gabriel is a strange beast, and on this album the bull was charging!
I found his first two solo albums boring and "So" seems like fakery from someone so generally dark.
This album is the one in between the dark and light periods, but that doesn't mean it's a compromise or middle-of-the-road. Far from it!
It is also the album where his interest in world music is most evident within his own compositions (only briefly hinted at on the previous album).
Check out Talking Heads' Remain in Light and Malcolm McLaren's Duck Rock for two additional classic 80s albums incorporating "other" musics.
Pete has the touch.......2007-02-03
All killer no filler here, this is the Masterpiece...
Highlights...
The Rhythm Of The Heat - Warning plays loud when the drums come in at the end
San Jacinto - Stellar piece
Shock The Monkey - The hit and most misunderstood lyric.
Lay Your Hands On Me - Live favorite when Peter stagedives
Wallflower - The most beautiful piece of music ever by a major prog artist
Kiss Of Life - Prelude to "So" R&B style
Peter Gabriel Part 4.......2006-11-01
With Security or Peter Gabriel 4 everywhere outside of USA Peter Gabriel picks up where he left on "Melt". It's a somber and gloomy affair that also expriments with world beat, African drums and Fairlight synthesizer. "Security" is a concept album about psychology (I will Later Get Into That), It craves careful listening, be in the right mood while you listen to this, just look at the scary album cover. This would also be the last serious Gabriel album, before he went mainstream on "So" in 1986.
Ok, Let's further describe the album concept and singles, It seems like many songs vaguely get into psychology, Gabriel want to express people's feelings with brilliant sounds and somber atmospheres, kind of like with "Intruder" from "Melt". "The Rhythm of the Heat" is based on Carl Jung's experience while observing a group of African drummers, it creates a unique feeling to be in the middle of Africa. On "San Jacinto" Gabriel wants to explore the the situations for Native Americans in America that have not only lost their lands but also lost their cultures in the Western Society. On this song, there is this awesome perrcussion sound throughput the song which creates a specialo feeling. "I Have The Touch" got a quite funny significant. It's about skin contact. Gabriel thought it was interesting that people in Paris and Latin America would touch each other more while saluting each other while in London people would be more reserved. It's the truth!. The song itself is a synth-pop drive uptempo song, Could have been a hit. "The Family and the Fishing Net" is about the diffrences of modern and traditional weddings. It's a quite stripped down song with percussion sounds and guitar. Very dark.
"Shock the Monkey" digs deeper into the subject of psychology. The song examines how jealousy can release one's baser instincts, and there is no better way then using a monkey as an example since they always express their honest feelings. This was a minor hit, and is well known for it's quite disturbing video where Gabriel is sitting in a dark room with a monkey and he uses a white face paint. It's a synthp-pop song with a memeorable hook. "Lay Your Hands On Me" is a slow and depressive song about the time to heal wounds, it also uses African Drums on the chorus. There is a part in the middle where actually Gabriel talks the lyrics. On "Wallflower" Gabriel talks about Polish activist Lech Walesa, who had spent time in a mental institution before he eventually became the most important person to fight communism in Poland. This is also a dark ballad. Last song "Kiss of Life" also feautures the world beat drums and is quite catchy by Gabriel standards, sounds a little like Paul Simon's music on "Graceland".
Overall, A dark but enjoyable album that picks up where "Melt" left. This is an very creative project full of intelligent lyrics and great musical soundscapes. By Gabriel fans this is a favorite and certainly you'll like it if you also liked "Melt".

Since his departure from Genesis, Peter Gabriel has crafted a very successful career blending his slight, anguished voice with studio sorcery and a bevy of world-music influences. However, Us does very little to build a case for his artistic growth in the six years that separate it from the commercial milestone of So. During the hiatus, Gabriel's marriage broke up, which undoubtedly contributes to the self-consciousness and introspection that permeate the album. The pop psychology of "Love to Be Loved" and "Washing of the Water" is overwrought. The exotic instrumentation on "Come and Talk to Me" seems intrusive and contrived. "Steam" and "Kiss the Frog" lighten the tone, but, as good-natured rockers, they are no matches for "Sledgehammer" or "Big Time." The production values and supporting players are of the highest order, but, with this material, Gabriel comes across as hypersensitive. Except for die-hard fans, Us is So-lite. --Rob Stewart

A personal album.......2007-06-17
Luis Mejia (son)- Although Gabriel previous album So was a great hit that spread out all of his popularity, this album is less popular but good as well. The musical style brought up to this album is not so firm as his past works, it's a deep work enjoyable and appreciatable though. It was released in 1992.
The first track Come Talk To Me was written by Gabriel because of his distant relationship with his first daughter. The third track Blood Of Eden was previously released in the film "Until The End Of The World". The songs Steam and Digging In The Dirt are the most famous in the album, both with sensational music videos and with catchy rythms, more alike for those who like the song Sledgehammer. The song Kiss That Frog is also alike. The rest of the tracks are very nice each one and are more personal, soft and calm with strong themes.
If you're yet not convinced, then I'll tell the great personnel that Peter Gabriel brought in this album; some of them are Tony Levin (King Crimson), Sinéad O' Connor, Peter Hammill (Van Der Graaf Generator), Brian Eno, among others.
Sequel to So.......2007-05-28
Released in 1992, this could be considered the sequel to Gabriel's blockbuster So. It is 57 minutes long and the sound quality is very good. There is a remastered version available, but I don't know if it would be necessary to get. Gabriel's earlier CD's (especially So) had mediocre to poor sound quality. So, the remastered versions are essential for those earlier CD's. I don't know how much better experience you would get from a remastered Us (especially since I haven't heard the remastered version).
In 1986, Gabriel released the fantastic So. It is a sign of the times. In the sixties and seventies, an artist would do a follow up album within a year. Starting in the late eighties, it is not uncommon for an artist to go 6 years between ablums.
Us could easily be considered So Junior, right from the two letter title, to cover of the CD, to the music style and song selection. It is a very good follow up to So, but slightly disappointing. It is not quite as good as So, and you would expect with 6 years, Gabriel would have topped So.
The main thing missing from Us is the great duets which highlight So. But, Santana has proved that you can push the duet thing too far.
The great thing about Us is that it contains two clones of Shock the Monkey, Kiss That Frog and Stean. So had only one Shock the Monkey clone, Sledgehammer. But, I think that now, Gabriel has finally perfected the sound, and the songs on Us are much better than the earlier songs. This is surprising, since clone songs like this usually come off poorly.
The rest of the songs on the Us are very good, but none reach the pinacle of the songs on So, such as Don't Give Up and Excellent Birds.
This is somewhere between a four and a five star CD.
Gabriel would put a double live CD of the concert tour to support this CD, called Secret World Live. It has some great moments, but also is weak in spots.
Beautiful album from Peter Gabriel.......2007-03-15
Thsi cd has it all, great songs like "Talk to me", "Washing in the water"and "Secret world". Also, some great hits, beautifully arranged and composed, the kind your not tired of after few years, like "Blood of Eden", "Steam", Digging in the dirt" and "Kiss that frog"
Three songs, in my mind, are weaker, which are "Love to be love", "Only us" and "Fourteen black painting" I give it a four star rating, highly recommanded.
Peter's "Face Value" .......2007-02-03
Now we know that our hero is human too, and he wears his heart on his sleeve here a la Phil's "Face Value" and it works as a five star album. Highly recommended and the comeback. His best work since "Security"
Now This Is More Like It.......2006-12-25
After the (understandable) commercial success of and (inexplicable) critical praise for So, it's good to see Peter back in top form here. Am I the only one who despised So? I thought it was Peter Gabriel Lite; empty, hollow, insubstantial, a pale pale semblance of glory and grandeur past (although I am partial to the Gabriel/Bush duet). Us, on the other hand, contains songs which are genuinely moving. There is real emotion here, not the manufactured variety found on So, and the musical and vocal stylings are pleasantly reminiscent of Security.
There are a good variety of songs here, from the irresistibly propulsive "Steam", to the infectious and hilarious "Kiss That frog," to the sublimely beautiful "Washing The Water" (easily my favorite track). This album may not be as innovative or brilliant as "Car", "Scratch" or Security (all of which were so astonishingly good that they hardly seem designed for mere mortal ears), but it maintains a consistent high quality throughout, and is emotionally resonant.

Peter Gabriel - Leaves Genesis And Strikes Out On His Own.......2007-04-04
This was the first solo album for Peter Gabriel after leaving Genesis the previous year. The album found Peter moving in a new direction while still holding on to some of the prog elements that had made him famous. He scored an AOR hit with the bouncy "Solsubury Hill" a song about his departure from his former band. I don't think that this is Gabriel's best solo album, but it does serve as a very nice jumping off point for what would become a storied solo career. For Genesis fans there is prog to be found here. "Moribund The Burgermieister" would have fit right in on "Selling England By The Pound. "Down The Dolce Vita" is an orchestral rocker that would have been perfectly at home on "The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway". There is also pop / rock represented by songs like "Modern Love". This song was the second single released from the album, but went no where on the charts. Playful whimsy is also represented with "Excuse Me" which almost sounds Zappa-ish to my ears. Two of the highlights of the album are ballads. "Humdrum" is a great little tune and the album closer "Here Comes The Flood" ranks up with the very best material Gabriel has written. He opened his "Up" concert tour with a solo rendition of this song that was truly magical. Overall this is a strong debut from the former Genesis singer, and hints at the many directions Gabriel's career would take in the coming decades.
"Wind Was Blowing, Time Stood Still".......2007-03-26
"Peter Gabriel" (1977) was Peter Gabriel's first solo album after leaving "Lamb Lies Down on Broadway"-era Genesis. It's got a pretty unique atmosphere, I think. Sort of dusty. It's got a great little booklet too, this remaster, with pretty much full lyrics and some photo related odds and ends from the era.
My favorite tracks would have to be: "Moribund the Burgermeister" (kind of reminds me of what Genesis would have been like if Peter had stayed), "Solsbury Hill" (though I've always loved that one, growing up with it), "Down the Dolce Vita" (with a big orchestra and a guitar part that sounds a bit like Survivor's "Eye of the Tiger"), "Modern Love" (which has a catchy rhythm) and "Humdrum" (which has a beautifully dramatic ending). "Here Comes the Flood" is taking a while to grow on me, though I do like it. "Slowburn" is a pretty colourful track that I love as well. That took me quite a few listens to get into.
Worth a listen for Genesis fans looking forward and solo Peter Gabriel fans looking back.
Every songs explore a musical avenue.......2007-03-17
I like this cd a lot, there is no filler, just good songs.
There is many style on this album, as if Peter was looking for what his sound should become. Favorite tracks are "Solsbury Hill", "Hundrum" and the very emotional "Here comes the Flood" All the other songs are very interesting also, again, no filler in this one.
Peter breaks out of the machinery and reinvents himself.......2007-02-03
Moribund The Burgermeister starts the record off as similar to The Lamb style or "The Slipperman part 2" but then he tries all types of styles from rock to barbershop and succeeds at breaking out the the prog cliches he tried to get away from.
Farewell Genesis, Welcome Peter.......2006-10-29
Peter Gabriel had been part of Prog. Band Genesis since they were founded in the 60's til he decided to pursue a solo career in 1975. This was his first solo project called just "Peter Gabriel" like his upcoming 3 albums also would. But cause of the cover art made by the exellent Storm Thorgerson (Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin) most fans knows it as "Car". There was no doubt that Gabriel wanted out of Genesis. As the brain and leadsinger he had alot of control over the band, but he felt like he could be creative enough while in the band, hence "Car" is a very diverse project with some songs that will remind you of Genesis, but also jazz, country sounding songs and some ballads. How can such diffrent songs make one 5 star album you may think?. The reason is simple. A fantastic artist exploring his musical skills are recording personal and innovative music he always wanted but couldn't. For the first time, Peter Gabriel is in full control of what he's doing and the result is fascintaing.
"Moribund the Burgermeister" on the surface sounds like a sequal of Genesis, it's a big majestic song about Middle Ages epidemics and backed by the London Symphony Orchestra. Listen closely to the sounds of this song and others, they are perfecly recorded. Second song and first single "Solsbury Hill" is perhaps the most autobiographical. Solsbury Hill is a very high place located in Bath, England where Gabriel often would go for walks, as the song starts "Climbing Up on Solsbury Hill/ I could See the City Light/ Wind was blowing, time stood still/ Eagle flew out of the night". You get the impression that Gabriel was very stressed at the time and wanted to spend time by himself thinking, so he went to this particular place where he could be alone and think about his life and take important decisions about the future. Maybe there was a voice inside of his head or god showing up, either way he took the decision. To leave Genesis and go solo. The whole song is pretty simple based on a accoustic riff throughput the song, which may sound odd coming from a Prog Rock legend, but "Solsbury Hill" is still one of his greatest compositions.
"Modern Love" was his secod single and didn't work on the charts at all, however it's an exellent song. Perhaps infleunced by Bruce Springsteen with it's basic riff driven rock song with alot of power and empathy. "Excuse Me" is perhaps the oddest songs of all here. It's sounds like a comedic parody suitable for a Frank Zappa album. It's very slow and somewhat jazzy, it was co-written by Martin Hall, one of a few songs that Gabriel didn't write himself. "Humdrum" is a ballad, very beautiful with great arrangements. It's about dissapearing. "Slowburn" is a typical Prog Rock feauting Robert Fripp on guitar, it has both slow and fast parts, it's a song that old Genesis fans will enjoy. Next song "Waiting For the Big One" is also Prog rock and it is very jazzy and not so accessable. It clocks over 7 minutes and got a wonderful guitar solo towards the end, believe it's Fripp again. "Down The Dolce Vita" also got help from the London Symphony Orchestra. If we go just by sound, this is the best song of the album. It's majestic and very colourful. It starts with the orhestra, almost like a film score and with fast guitar riffs but towards the mid it get's stripped down in slow pace and a strange percussion is used, almost like Fusion Jazz. This song is really worthwile. The closer is called "Here Comes the Food" and is a power ballad. It's based on a dream that Peter had where people could read each others mind, and those that were honest and sincere will get the apreciation they deserve while the false lyers will get exposed for who they truly are. Roger Fripp's guitar solo is magnificient here. Wish it had been longer. However, Fripp recorded his own version of the song with Gabriel once again on vocals for his album "Exposure".
Overall, Peter Gabriel's debut album is nothing short of excellent. It really captures who he is and how he want to sound like. It's quite diverse but still got alot of the Prog. Rock influences from Genesis. If you want to listen to something diffrent and well produced here is a album you should take a look at. No filler, or overproductions just a very good album with 9 songs that will get your attention. Start your Peter Gabriel collection right here.
