Great live record........2007-07-07
This is a grate concert from Peter Gabriel. In my opinion his best live record so far. I recommended it to anyone who if familiar with and like Peter Gabriel early recordings.
Great live album from Peter.......2007-03-18
The sound of this double live cd is amazing, of course, it has been enhanced in studio but the "live" feeling of beeing there is preserved.
Many songs are far better in their live version on this cd when compared to the studio ones. To name a few, "The Family Snapshot", "D.I.Y", "The Family and the fishing net", "San Jacinto", "Solsbury Hill" and "Hundrum"
The voice is incredible and the sound just shake everything in the house.
Great live performance to remember this magic concert for the Security Tour.
The Great Homily.......2007-03-11
This album is the pinnacle of live albums in the prog rock genre.
This work is the work that all live- recording since, compare themselves to.
Gabriel along with old school peers like Bowie were and still are masters of the Live-performance. And the new breed of masters, like Tool, learned it all here.
An intriguing but often bland live album.......2006-10-21
So far, Peter Gabriel has released two live albums. The first is PLAYS LIVE, which features songs from Gabriel's first four albums (all of which were self-titled, though they have all been given frequently-used nicknames: CAR, SCRATCH, MELT, and SECURITY). The second is SECRET WORLD LIVE, which features songs from Gabriel's fifth and sixth albums, SO and US, as well as a few tunes from other Gabriel recordings. PLAYS LIVE was recorded in 1982 during the SECURITY tour, and released the following year. After the live recording, Gabriel took the recordings into his studio and tweaked them a little. Is this irritating? A little, but it seems more unnecessary than irritating. (At least Gabriel freely admits to tweaking the tunes in the CD booklet.) Regardless of the tweaking, PLAYS LIVE is a lively album that presents some very interesting - and occasionally superior - performances of Gabriel faves.
None of the live performances are bad, though "Solsbury Hill" does lose a lot of its strength when infused with synthesizers. Most of them are quite good, and a few are superior to their studio originals. One such song is "Intruder". The live version adds a little weirdness to the tune, but takes out much of the chillyness from the studio version; still, the PLAYS LIVE version is probably the best. Also, the live version of "The Family And The Fishing Net" is considerably better than the studio version.
Inexplicably, the rest of the songs lose much of their power when performed live. The only other song that really sticks out is "I Go Swimming", available exclusively on this CD. "I Go Swimming" is one of Gabriel's most fun songs and possibly one of his best. What really keeps PLAYS LIVE going is the interesting arrangements of the Gabriel faves - different instruments, new instrumental sections, lyrics sung differently, etc. Still, none are really knockouts, save for the aforementioned tunes.
If you're a big-time Gabriel fan, you'll want to check out this CD. Otherwise, spend your money purchasing his studio albums. PLAYS LIVE is consistently intriguing, but it often feels bland and rarely excites. (Steer clear of the HIGHLIGHTS version, released in 2002 as part of the remastered Gabriel catalogue. The HIGHLIGHTS version deletes six of the album's tracks, most of which were among the best on the album.)
Uplifting and disturbing.......2005-06-10
This live CD by Peter Gabrial is quite amazing. It is a collection of his very best performances from this tour. The songs are all highly spiritual yet sometimes dark in tone. That is the genius of this collection. If you want to be inspired in a new way I highly recommend this CD. It is uplifting and disturbing at at the same time.

A Perfect Piano Recital.......2007-06-19
This disc was recorded at Wigmore Hall on October 29, 1993, and shows, once again, how vibrant Shura Cherkassky played a mere two years before his death. The recital begins with a Gavotte by Jean-Philippe Rameau, a favorite piece for Mr. Cherkassky that he plays with great elegance. A sonata by Joseph Haydn (composed ca. 1781 - 1782) continues the program, and is charmingly played with nimble dexterity, particularly in the rondo finale.
The Haydn is followed by the longest piece on the program - the Hindemith Sonata No. 3 (1936), which was a favorite work of Mr. Cherkassky. The Sonata is an engaging work written in a neo-classical style that came to dominate Hindemith's music. Chopin dominates the middle of the concert with four pieces - the Ballade No. 3, Nocturne in F-sharp, Mazurka in F-sharp and Mazurka in G. The Nocturne is beautifully phrased and delicately nuanced, arguably among the best performances of this music. There are three pieces by Sir Lennox Berkeley: two preludes from his opus 23 that are engaging and nicely played and a charming Polka that is satiric along the lines of Shostakovich and is a nice bravura piece.
The Liszt Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 concludes the concert with Mr. Cherkassky giving a superb account with nice touches of drama and virtuosity, and the disc concludes with an encore: Tchaikovsky's October from The Seasons.
The music is beautifully recorded; there is applause after each selection and I detected only a single cough during the Chopin Nocturne. The booklet describes each piece in detail with pictures of the composers and there is a nice biography of Shura Cherkassky. This is another great Cherkassky recital and one that should not be missed.

Live debut of legendary band.......2007-07-01
This was the first album by John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers, whose ever-changing line up had temporarily stabilized as John Mayall (vocal, harmonica, guitar, 9-string guitar), Roger Dean (guitar), John McVie (bass) and Hughie Flint (drums), and it was recorded live. Klooks Kleek was at the Railway Hotel, next door to Decca's recording studios in West Hampstead. The club's compère Johnny Gunnell, together with his brother Rik Gunnell, persuaded Decca's engineers to run cables from an open studio window into the club, enabling studio quality sound in an environment in which the band excelled, and so their gig of Monday 7 December 1964 was preserved for posterity. At the time, the band (with a different guitarist and drummer) had released only one single, Crawling Up A Hill, which opened the live set, and they also previewed Crocodile Walk, their second single, which came out in April 1965, shortly after the album was released.
For the live recording the band was augmented by Nigel Stanger on tenor sax, plus some appropriate novelty slide sax sounds on The Hoot Owl and Chicago Line. Both of these and most of the rest of the record are John Mayall songs not recorded elsewhere, mostly in Chicago and country blues styles, and there is also a strange mash up of Night Train and Lucille.
To the original album have been appended five bonus tracks. These are both sides of the two singles, all in their original mono (stereo mixes of both sides of the second single can be found on London Blues (1964-1969)), plus My Baby Is Sweeter. This was recorded at the same session as the Crocodile Walk single but wasn't released until Thru the Years in 1971, and is the only stereo track on this CD.
John Mayall was one of the most important figures of the whole blues movement, and had a big impact through the astute use of the musicians he developed in the Bluesbreakers over a number of years, and through his own musicianship, and this atmospheric recording shows from where it stemmed.
RIP Rik Gunnell who died this month (June 2007)
Live Taste of Early Mayall.......2007-02-17
Frankly, I didn't know this album existed until now but after reading the informative booklet that accompanies the CD I discovered that this is actually a reissue of John Mayall's first long player! It surprised me since I have been a Mayall fan since the 60s and never saw John Mayall Plays John Mayall while browsing in any record store. Anyway, now its been remastered for CD and Mayall fans will find lots to enjoy.
When you are listening to this, keep in mind that this was recorded live in 1964. If you do that, you are going to be amazed at what you find here. I pretty much like the whole CD, including the generous addition of five bonus tracks recorded in the same general time period. However, I do have some favorite tracks. These include both takes on Crawling Up A Hill, When I'm Gone, both takes of Crocodile Walk, What's the Matter With You, Runaway, Heartache, Chicago Line (redone by Mayall 30 years later with another group as the title cut of their album), and Mr James. About the only thing I don't like about the CD is the goofy Hoot Owl. But hey, that's the only one out of seventeen songs.
The CD comes with an informative booklet containing lots of early photos of Mayall and his band. In addition to Mayall, one other member of the band here remains internationally famous today. That is John McVie, who most people know went on to fame then fortune as a founding member and the "Mac" of Fleetwood Mac.
If you like John Mayall, and I assume you do if you are reading this, then you should include this Klooks Kleek live CD in your collection as soon as possible to hear what you have been missing. I'm sure glad I did!

McCoy Tyner has paid tribute on record to his former boss John Coltrane several times before, notably on the 1972 solo effort, Echoes of a Friend. But he is a different pianist now than he was then. Once a player of volcanic force and eddying intellect, Tyner has become a more elegant, restrained stylist. Recorded at New York's Village Vanguard on what would have been Coltrane's 71st birthday, and released to commemorate the saxophone legend's 75th, McCoy Tyner Plays John Coltrane could hardly be more even-tempered. Working outside his standing trio--the bassist is George Mraz, the drummer Al Foster--Tyner brings the same lilting delicacy to "Afro Blue" that he brings to the classic ballad "Naima." That isn't to say he lacks intensity in returning to the Trane songbook, which is also represented by the title track from "Crescent," "Moment's Notice," and the infrequently heard "Mr. Day" (from Coltrane Plays the Blues). With his gleaming note clusters, flowing lyricism, and spiritual weight, he makes it clear that the songs and their original singer still mean a lot to him--just as Tyner still means a lot to anyone who cares about the modern jazz piano. --Lloyd Sachs
Customer Reviews:
McCoy Tyner-the most overrated jazz pianist .......2006-02-13
Among all my Jazz-CD's - and there are many of them - this is by far the worst and disappointing one. And yet it is quite revealing. Many Jazz fans and critical reviewers celebrate Tyner as the best Jazz pianist alive. Although I have a huge respect for the musical quality of most Jazz, this shows me that the classic listeners and reviewers are musically just more educated and sophisticated than those in Jazz. Yes, there might be no Jazz pianist in history which has been more virtous than Tyner, and none which is technically better.
But as any classical educated piano professor will tell you, virtuosity makes no good pianist. And thats totally the case for Tyner. If I listen to his recordings, its always the same - huge accord clusterings, incredible fast playing, but no feel for the music, no elegance whatsoever and no interesting development or experimenting. His solos are really boring.
Just listen to Naima, one of the greatest pieces in Jazz. Start with the original Coltrane recording, the wonderful piano in it (NOT Tyner!), the feel for the music. Then listen to Breckers solo on the 2003 Directions in Music recording, playing an incredible interpretation of it, and then go to Tyners interpretation. Imagine how Bill Evans would play it. Then you have to stop this CD after 2 minutes. Its just terrible. Large parts he plays in fortissimo, with his usual style. I can't believe how bad it is. The same is true for Crescent and all the other pieces.
Or listen to "After the rain". That is pure pop-kitsch at worst, with accords and harmonics I would expect on a MTV-music award show, but not on a Jazz-CD. Even Norah Jones is pure experimentation against it!
The question then remains: Why was he part of one of the greatest Jazz-quartets? I went back to all Coltrane CD's including him. I can only say he was at the right place at the right time. His playing really does fit to Coltrane, all the fury, the virtuosity, the aggresive improvisation over one scale, but without Coltrane, he is just bad and totally lost. And indeed, the worst Coltrane pieces are those where Tyner has an extended solo, such as in "Afro-Blue" on "One up, one down". There you hear all his strict limitations in terms of harmony and developing an interesting solo.
Deserves 10 stars.......2005-02-14
This is such a rewarding CD ! McCoy Tyner's recordings are among my favorites in jazz and in a trio setting he is really allowed to display his incredible virtuosity. Here he is beautifully accompanied by George Mraz and Al Foster. Mraz provides fine bass playing throughout and several of his solos are just outstanding as well. The drumming is perfectly suited to these arrangements of tunes recorded by Coltrane and Foster's drum solo on Afro Blue is wonderful.
I just caught Tyner's more recent trio with Eric Harland and Charnett Moffett performing in LA and they were playing as if they were of one mind. Harland's drumming is terrific as well. After seeing them and then listening to this I for one will never miss an opportunity to hear McCoy Tyner in a trio setting.
Buy this CD if you don't have it. You will be glad you did.
A Truly Rewarding Set.......2004-03-14
This live set of music associated with Mr. Tyner's former boss/collaborator rewards with repeated listening because this trio's music is greater than the sum of the parts. This is special praise considering that the players' individual contributions are unique and outstanding. The range of Tyner's creativity includes the gentle romanticism of "After The Rain", the controlled yet rhythmic passion of "Afro Blue", and the bright, soulful blues expression of "Mr. Day". Please note that it is often overlooked that McCoy Tyner is an outstanding blues player! Throughout this set (in which each tune is a winner), George Mraz(bass) and Al Foster(drums) lay a firm magical carpet while providing their own brands of sonic and rhythmic electricity. Foster listens intently and at times seems to have a particular ESP with Tyner. In paying tribute to John Coltrane, Tyner's two-handed virtousity literally welds musical ideas into the listener's consciousness and thus inspires and rewards.
Good, just shy of great.......2003-12-30
I spontaneously bought this cd yesterday after seeing it in a local cd store. I only have one Tyner solo disc, and a bunch of other discs with him (such as old Coltrane albums).
McCoy Tyner does a great job of adapting Coltrane's sometimes off-the-wall playing into his own style of "controlled agression" piano playing (term not copywrited yet by yours truly). While Tyner has mellowed a bit in the past couple of decades, his playing is still as potent as ever. And what better way to showcase his talent then by adapting Coltrane sax classics into his own style?
I think this disc falls just a shade short of being brilliant. It's good for what it is. Coltrane covers, but just a little bit away from being truly inspired and jaw dropping.
If you are a Coltrane fan, or a Tyner fan, or both, you will enjoy this release.
McCoy Tyner's Best?!.......2002-07-04
I have two McCoy Tyner recordings: "Live at the Village" and "Trident", and, although both seem exceptional, "Live at the Village" just amazes me! Tyner and Co. have captured the essence of Coltrane's music in such a fresh and imaginative way. Moreover, Al Foster (one of my favorite drummers after hearing him here and on Bobby Hutcherson's "Skyline") and George Mraz offer support and empathy in what McCoy is trying to achieve in terms of mood and capturing the essence of Coltrane (which to me represents a spiritul quest through music). I bought this together with Pat Metheny Group's "Quartet" and Nicolas Payton's "Finger Painting: A Tribute to Herbie Hancock", and truely struck a mother lode of outstanding music. For me it doesn't get much better than this.

Customer Reviews:
Great CD from one of the best Kenton eras.......1999-12-21
This is a wonderful CD. It has 3 songs that haven't been recorded anywhere else, not even on the Mosaic Complete Russo and Holman recordings. I think this was one of Kentons best bands and there is some wonderful playing on here. All of the arrangements were done by Bill Holman, who was arguably Kenton's best arranger/composer. There are two reasons why I did not give this album 5 stars. The first is that it is a live recording and the recording quality is decent but slips in some spots. The other is that a couple of times the band sounds tired. Regardless, this is a wonderful recording. Charlie Parker is a guest soloist!

Kagan: Schnittke's soul mate.......2003-05-23
What a virtuoso and yet expressive playing by Oleg Kagan! Sonata no. 2 seems so approachable and clear compared to Gidon Kremer's scratchy and dry rendition. In Kagan's recording, the technique is flawless and effortless and just serves the human soul.
Then another gem of this CD is the first performance of Schnittke's Violin Concerto no. 3 conducted by Maestro Yuri Nikolaevsky. Violist in the orchestra of Mravinsky, Nikoleavsky has been a friend of Schnittke and Gubaidulina and is very appreciated for his baroque and contemporary music interpretation in Russia. He has worked with Schnittke in Mosfilm studios and is still at 78 a sought after conductor. The clarity of Nikoleavsky reading is present and combined with Kagan's soul, delivers a poignant performance.
