Is there a finer green-blooded punk band in all of Boston than the Dropkick Murphys? The Singles Collection 1996-1997 answers the question with a rousing "Oy!". Like all good punk outfits, the Dropkick Murphys recorded several 7-inch records and toured diligently; most DM fans will have most of these tracks, but will probably want crunchy, angry anthems such as "Fightstarter Karaoke" and "Regular Guy" on compact disc. In addition to this material are 10 live numbers from the Do or Die record release show. The sonic document perfectly captures the Murphys' harsh sizzle and, combined with the rest of the disc, distracts from the fact that The Singles Collection contains three--count 'em, three--Clash covers! At least their allegiances are clear. --Jason Josephes
Customer Reviews:
Great for the true fan.......2007-02-07
This CD has some favorite tracks you've heard before, and some tracks that only appeared on singles. The versions of songs from Do or Die aren't as good as the originals from Do or Die, but some of the new songs (Front Seat, Guns of Brixton) are great additions to any fan's catalog. Also, the live songs are pretty decent. Pick this album up only if you have their other CDs.
Disappointing for a DK fan who heard "Worker's Song".......2006-03-08
I was REALLY psyched when I heard "Workers Song". I had never heard Dropkick Murphys before, but I like punk, and especially meaningful punk, a la Dead Kennedys, Black Flag, Sex Pistols, Clash, Flipper, DOA, and others. I should have listened to the reviews that mentioned it was all three chords and lots of noise.
I don't think the Dropkick Murphys are the problem - they seem to be a GREAT group. I readily identify with the "Irish Pride" thing, even though I'm only a little Irish (probably about 1/8 or so), because of the persecution they've suffered at the hands of the English (one of my favorite songs of all time is John & Yoko's "Luck of the Irish"). Irish suffrage and Irish pride are not empty phrases to me, and for that reason alone, I like the music and the points that DM raises in some of its songs.
Maybe I should have just settled for the CD with the song I liked and gone from there. I listened to a couple of other songs on "Blackout" and I will be buying that CD. So, while I can't give the above CD more than 2 stars, I still give the Dropkick Murphys group 5 stars.
Aezome.......2005-03-16
A very catchy cd witch some very good songs. Rock with some irish flavor.
HAPPY ST PATTYS DAY

Thumbs Up.......2007-04-14
I purchased this CD used for the Big in Japan track because I was having a difficult time finding it on an online music service.
I am glad that I did because I found that
I like the other tracks on the CD as well or better than
Big in Japan.
I would highly recommend it.
Awsome!.......2003-02-17
Alphaville is awsome. The song Big In Japan is one of the best songs period in my opinion. It gives me the chills. This album is worth everypenny, from the way the CD starts on forever young with that really captivating beggining till the remix version of Big in Japan. Damn awsome!!
Brilliant group, not so good filler album for the US marketý.......2001-08-28
This "album" was a US only compilation release for the US market as evidenced by the liner notes. This is an obvious but wasted attempt by Atlantic Records to get some exposure for this very under-rated German synth band. Alphaville had released two album by this point, the classic that was Forever Young and it's brilliant follow-up Afternoons In Utopia. This compilation doesn't do either albums justice but does bring together on disc some tracks that would probably not have made to the CD format. The Special Extended Mix of Forever Young takes a good 80's synth ballad and turns into a 6 minute dance song that is even better. Red Rose and Big In Japan were remixed in 1988 for some reason and both single versions are included here as well as the 88 remix of Big In Japan. This album also contains the original 12" mixes of Red Rose and Dance With Me. I loved every one of these tracks and as a big Alphaville fan I have no qualms in purchasing this CD. 8 tracks, 4 songs - 2 from each album. Why? The tracks are not bad by any means, but this compilation could have been so much better - check out First Harvest as the definitive Alphaville singles collection so far released 4 years after this in 1992. This CD would have been better being classified as an EP and was a wasted opportunity in promoting Alphaville to a wider audience.
Very good lost CD from the 80's........2001-05-16
I found this CD in a bargain bin at the local record store and picked it up. It's a good CD which brings up a lot of nostalgia from the 80's. Track 5 is my personal favorite, but all 8 tracks are worthy of a listen.
You must really like Alphaville.......2001-01-11
If you came to this page you must really like Alphaville - you know the songs by heart, you love them, you have heard them 1000s of times. Under the circumstances, the only usefull thing to say is probably: BE AWARE THAT THE CD CONTAINS ONLY 4 SONGS, EACH IN TWO DIFFERENT VERSIONs. But if you are here that probably won't stop you, will it? It didn't stop me.

The first volume has sold over 160,000 worldwide and is one of the hottest CDs in the group's catalog. Features anthemic covers of AC/DC, Creedence Clearwater Revival, and The Misfits.
Customer Reviews:
Great set of rare songs and covers.......2007-02-07
This collection has some amazing tracks; I can't believe that some of them didn't make it onto the normal albums. There are a bunch of covers, like Halloween by The Misfits, Vengeance by The Nipple Erectors, Informer by The Business, and Watch Your Back by Cock Sparrer. Additionally, the Business and DKM team up to perform Mob Mentality. Some great DKM originals include 21 Guitar Salute and Pipebomb On Lansdowne (Dance Remix). Mostly covers here, but they're really well done. I highly recommend this CD.
This Is Awesome..........2005-11-28
This is such an awesome collection here, I'm really glad it was released. Basically this is just a cover CD, with the exception of a few songs. But when you put a great band like Dropkick covering great songs, you get great results. They cover everything from rock classics like "Its A Long Way To The Top" and "Fortunate Son" to Cock Sparrer "Shock Troops" era classics like "Working" and "Watch Your Back". And then there is the hilarious remix of "Pipebomb" (its a joke people!). They also cover my favorite Sham 69 song on here, so thats cool too. This is just a great cd period. Highly reccomended to anyone.
Very disapointing.......2005-04-21
I already have all these songs, and I was looking foward to cd quality versions of songs that I only have on vinyl. I was exremely disapointed to find out that they censored Pipebomb on Landsdowne Street. What a rip off!!!! The unsencored version's hillarious and was meant as a joke, but the band pussied out and censored it probably cause they thought that they'd offend some people. Man this band used to be cool, now they're just a bunch of pussies. I recomend you hunt down the AF split and listen to the uncensored version of the song.
Great collection for any fan.......2005-03-12
The Singles Collection brings together a bunch of rare tracks from various Dropkick Murphys singles, compilations or splits. All the good stuff from those is here. If you're a hardcore Dropkick Murphys then you probably have all these tracks already but this is a great thing for the casual fan.
There is a lot of good stuff here. There's a surprisingly strong cover of AC/DC's "It's a Long Way to the Top (If You Wanna Rock & Roll)" complete with good vocals. A great cover of Gang Green's alcohol. A very garage sounding cover of CCR's oft covered "Fortunate son". "21 Guitar Salute" is a strong cover of the great Press song and the anthemic "Working" is a great addition. The album is mainly covers with a few original songs along with a few splits like the Dropkick Murphys/Business split "Mob Mentality". The covers are for the most part including covers from **** Sparrer, Danzig, and Motorhead amongst others.
The quality of the album and the presentation is strong and all the songs sound as crisp as any of their albums. The strong vocal quality, talented instrumental work and original sound are all here in full force so this should be a good buy for any Dropkick Murphys fan. 4 stars.
A MUST FOR ANY DROPKICKS FAN.......2005-03-09
I just bought it today since i got it, i have been in love with it. There are lots of covers but thats not a bad thing. Another good thing is that Al Barr is singing alot and i think hes the better singer. The only downside to this cd is they only play bag pipes in three or four songs. You all should buy this cd its worth it trust me

Customer Reviews:
A MUST HAVE!.......2006-10-24
This is essential for any fan of late 70's-early 80's punk, and if you're looking for the fun factor it just doesn't get any better than this! From the covers to the originals, this will have your fists going in the air (like mine did on the cover of Nights in White Satin). My only gripe is that I wish tracks from Stukas on Disneyland (another must have)like She's a Hunchback, Pretty Please Me and the cover of Communication Breakdown were included on this. Enough said, GET THIS NOW!
Of course it's great, but...........2006-07-02
What a luxury - to have those Dickies hits available in one place. As an early fan, I can recall enough to realize that a single CD may not be all that heavy-duty fans need. Their first two CDs (Amazing Shrinking Dickies, Dawn of the Dickies) were irresistable, start to finish, and those single tracks (like Banana Splits) indispensible.
Of course, this is a fine sampling of the band's very best work during their prime, but there's a chance you might grow so attached to these tunes that you're tempted to indulge your completist tendencies. Please do so. Even the Dickies' early albun tracks are special, and funny.
There is no more fun band.......2005-12-06
Some of the most tight, humerous and fast songs from talented musicians in punk's history. Basically, their enormous creative period was the late 70's and early 80's. They were one of the few bands that traveled the path of several UK punk bands, they got signed to a big label. The CLASH, the JAM, BUZZCOCKS, SEX PISTOLS and so forth. That was not the norm for most U.S. punk bands. GANG GREEN, DEAD KENNEDYS, BAD BRAINS, X, BLACK FLAG, MINUTEMEN, MINOR THREAT. The biggest punk bands in the U.S. still were on indie labels in the 70's and 80's. The DICKIES were one of the few who were seen by some big label as having commercial potential. Too fast. The music that is. It did help them get known in the U.K. Meanwhile, the DICKIES were still embraced by punx, big label or not. They fell in the catagory of joke band, as in joked a lot.
The covers they did of old rock songs was and is brilliant. Let's just speed 'em up boys. Sounds of Silence and Nights in White Satin were particularly surprising how they could bring them to punk life by performing them with lovely speed. Their first album, originally on yellow vinyl, "The Incredible Shrinking Dickies" falls in the catagory of a perfect album. Every song just is so fun, blazes and the entire lp just races through. I remember playing it back in those days and it really stood out compared to other lps with its humor and very tightly written songs and those unbelievable covers. It's like they reworked some rock songs and showed the impact punk could have on our old rock world. Mainly, it's about the speed, also the attitude. In their case, not anarchy and moaning, but laughing and joking. Actually, much of punk and hardcore has satire and humor but it's not always very obvious.
Their spectacular songs on this collection are: Paranoid, Eve of Destruction, Give It Back, You Drive Me Ape(You Big Gorilla), Sounds of Silence, Hideous, Nights in White Satin, Manny Moe and Jack, She Loves Me Not,
(I'm Stuck in a Pagoda With) Tricia Toyota, Gigantor, Bowling With Bedrock Barney, Silent Night. I've always considered Gigantor to be one of the finest songs ever made by human beings. That slow build up, the crescendo of wall of sound music, the fierce dedication to the fast tempo and recreation of passion for the Japanese cartoon character while, overall, musically it is one perfect gem of fast humoerous punk rock.
I love cds when they bring together scattered songs from a variety of original vinyl releases. Even when I have them all, and, I believe I do have all the albums and 7"s these come from, I rarely break out my vinyl. Not as convient, not portable and vinyl begins to develop pops and crack sounds the more you play them. It's just inevitable. Much less, the many folks who do not have these songs on the original vinyl. Here they are, in all their glory. A tremendous introduction to the DICKIES. Possibly the only record you need to purchase of theirs although you'll be happy to own the first two albums (Incredible... and Dawn of the Dickies) if you love this, you'll want the other songs on those albums too. Thanks guys. Your music will live forever because it's magnificent fast fun! chrisbct@hotmail.com

This is one fantastic collection of tracks by one Great band. These songs kill me,I'm laughing while I pogo dance. Timeless Classics,a must have CD.

Good Old-Fashioned Punk.......2005-09-09
Awwww, the memories. Growing up as a School-Kid in dismal London back in the 70's '999' were always my favorite punk band. More fun & less serious than some of their contemporaries (i.e.: Clash/Sex Pistols/Stiff Little Fingers) and certainly less precious than the admittedly brilliant 'Jam'. The songs were short, loud with a good healthy sing-along chorus. 'Emergency' was always their best known track but I think their most punkish songs (is that good English) are 'Nasty Nasty' & the speed-riff 'No Pity', I love trying to sing along the lyrics on that one (Not out loud of course). Although I could never quite get away from the fact that Nick Cash sounded a bit too much like Noddy Holder of 'Slade' on some tracks. Just check out 'Homicide' and see what I mean. All their good stuff is here of course and it's the legit original recordings too (unlike the rip-off CD 'Emergency' which I bought by mistake a while back). If you like good old fashioned punk with a pinch of fun and plenty of energy then pick this puppy up. This is the real old-school of the Punk Day's
THESE OLD GEEZERS ROCK HARD !!!!!!!.......2005-08-23
INDEED ! 1996 compilation of all the early singles of this criminally underrated and vastly imitated (think Olga of Toy Dolls meets Peter And The Test Tube Babies) coz these dudes came first. They already were a pub rock band in 76,and jumped on the 77 punk wagon without loosing their rock'n roll edge.Fun/punk/rock'nroll/pub rock, the energy present in these bass driven, razor sharp, incredibly loud dual guitar songs is unbelievable, and so is the excellent sound I honestly did'nt expect from recordings this old.The last 3 songs flirt with reggae in typical 80's fashion but they work for me.Another outstanding release by Captain Oi !

...why did I wait so long to discover you?.......2002-06-11
As an Milwaukee ex-pat in SF, I first heard of them on the WMSE (milw. school of eng.) radio stream back in feb, and found myself wanting to seek out this album. It's too bad I found about about them too late so no more tours.
I think it's going to be a long time until I like another female vocalist pop/punk band as much. It's too bad they broke up (right after high school or something?)...
Now it's time to end this msg and buy their other available stuff!

This CD is the newest in my collection of Adicts CDs and it is a winner. However, i think that the very best of the adicts shows off the great range of songs that have a great meaning to them. If its your first adicts CD, try the very best of the adicts, it will have you adictted in no time
Im the joker in the pack!!!!.......2004-03-19
This was a very good cd! I was first introduced to "The Adicts" when watching a video about the history of punk. I bought this and it's very good. Almost all the songs are magnificent. You will only be disappointed with a couple songs. It comes with over 20 songs, so it's well worth it.

Customer Reviews:
The original boot boys from East End.......2006-06-12
Punk was, in its early years, mostly conquered by artistic, smart and witty characters with finally a way to express themselves. TV Smith, Johnny Rotten, Richard Hell... you get the point. Back then there was no "new wave", punk was about various different attitudes and styles. The mohawk-and-anarchy- stereotypic times were ahead.
Every now and then, it`s still a pleasure to hear some original boot-stomping, fist-pumpin` punk, and that`s what Sham 69 did the best. I consider Sham 69 to be one of the best and most important punk bands in British history, as they spawned the Oi!- movement (although Cock Sparrer may have been the first) and countless other bands in the progress. Sham 69 had anthemic, catchy and strong songs you could sing along to, and they were, unlike many bands, very honest about what they did. They didn`t wear punk-fashion clothes or spike their hair, they were working-class and proud of it.
Although there have been talk about whether or not they were racist, neo-Nazis or skinheads, it`s complete crap. It`s true that Oi! is a music genre that has always attracted skinheads and other morons, but it started strictly as anthemic street-punk. Sham 69 may have had a roughneck partisan following, but really, the band had a Jewish drummer and Jimmy Pursey (their charismatic vocalist) was a veganist and his political ideas were far-left. The band tried to shake off the following of the National Front, who seemed to stick with the band like a magnet for some reason, as they played at Rock Against Racism- concerts etc. So I think it`s safe to say that Sham 69 wasn`t by any means a neo-Nazi band.
Now, this should be a review so I`ll give you some of my thoughts about this marvelous CD. Sham 69 had tons of absolutely awesome songs, but their albums weren`t up to par with their singles. Tell Us The Truth was a great album (even if it had a couple filler tracks), and That`s Life was a pretty good one too, but their albums went downhill after that. So, a fine introduction to their work is Punk Singles Collection, rounding up all of their 1977-80 singles` A- and B- sides. And what a collection it is. Sham 69 weren`t just the first Oi! band, but the most successful too. They had 7 charting singles, and while listening to this album one can`t but to wonder why Sham 69 isn`t as widely praised and remembered as the more famous bands. These songs are full of energy, just listen to tracks like Borstal Breakout, Angels With Dirty Faces, If The Kids Are United or Hersham Boys. The collection only has a couple of bad tracks (mainly from the end, when Sham 69 became way too pompous and silly), and couple of fillers like the Beatles- cover and Sunday Morning Nightmare, which are more like jokes. But like the first 9 songs, it`s pure gold. The live tracks are great too, the live version of Tell Us The Truth beats up the studio version easily. The crowd, Sham Army as the fans were known, sings along mightily, and you`ve got to hear the ending of Rip Off (another classic), where Pursey commands a group of fans to stop fighting. Just shows what Sham 69 meant to their fans. Anyways, way too many classics to list. So, if you like original british punk, I recommend this VERY STRONGLY. You might end up a Sham 69 fan.
Punk Undiluted.......2004-02-24
You can't begin to understand classic 70's UK punk rock without reference to Sham 69. It's true they weren't cute and media positioned like the Pistols, didn't have any pretence to being "clever" like the Adverts, didn't have the inventiveness or the social awareness of the Clash. They were freakin' rabble rousers as every anthem on this album demonstrates. Full bore attack, with no mercy. This music is so raw it bleeds. Yes, as another reviewer notes, Sham did draw a heavyweight crowd that would probably have voted for the National Front if they'd known how to draw an 'x' on a ballot slip. Their performances did have a sense of 1930's Munich beer hall about them. Downright violent at times. But that was part of punk, ladies, it was a time of deep social divide, of mistrust, resentment and anger. This music tells it, in a way that the Pistols did not. There was nothing fashionable about Sham - it wasn't a bunch of middle class kids getting up on stage with safety pins through their noses. This was the real working class deal. And to his credit, lead singer Jimmy Pursey's stage command never allowed things to turn truly ugly. He could whip the crowd into a frenzy and with a word or a look stop them from going over the edge. To watch him perform was to understand what a working class hero looked like. Buy this music. Feel the sheer nobility of it, because beneath the juggernaut that is Sham 69 there is a purity and a dignity you simply have to respect.
How could you give anything less than 5 stars?.......2004-01-21
This is a classic. Punk sounds good in the old days. This is REAL punk. Even if you like the poseur bands like the sex pistols, greenday, blink 182, and good charlotte, I still recommend you getting this. Sham 69 is not only better than those bands I just mentioned, but these guys are legitiment punks. This is a CD I can listen to from beginning to end and never miss a beat. This was a great investment, and I strongly recommend this to old school and new school punx! BUY NOW!!!
Good Fun Punk.......2002-05-02
Sham 69 was never meant to be the most important of punk bands. They wrote and performed, with abandon, a handful of memorable, simple sing-along anthems. Armies of guitars and vocals hit you over the head. Raise your pint glass and belt out those choruses! Since Sham 69 weren't the most consistent when it came to quality of songwriting, this collection is pretty much all you'll ever need. You get Borstal Breakout, If The Kids Are United, Hersham Boys, and a few other standouts, all together on one disc. This definitely belongs in your collection, if your collection includes things like Clash, Damned, Sex Pistols, Ramones, Buzzcocks, etc. If you don't have the seminal work from those bands, then you probably don't need this.
sham's best.......2001-12-30
save the last 4 tracks, this cd is awesome. the first 11 are their most oi!/street punk sounding that are on here. the rest are great as well, but have more of a straight rock and somewhat pop feel, yet still retain their punk sound and attitude. i'm glad that left the horrible garbage off the 'volunteer' album on here...it's even worse than the last 4 songs which are disposable enough for my tastes.
