5 out of 5 stars The staple of Live's career!.......2007-04-25

Okay, here's the classic "I Go Back" intro: Live's "Throwing Copper" brings me back to my sophomore year in high school, primarily whenever I hear "Selling the Drama" and "I Alone". I heard it plenty of times at high school parties and driving around with friends.

Here's another cheesy line: I can't define a masterpiece, but I know it when I hear it!

Well, that is precisely what this album is. Tight chords, strong lyrics, and great passion in each song. When you hear different songs from different times in Live's career, you can definitely pick up on the different sounds. "Throwing Copper" was quite anthemic, where you can't help but pump your fists in the air. Ed and the group seemed to get more spiritual in their lyrics with each album, especially "The Distance to Here" and "Birds of Pray". One could even say the songs here tend to be more dark and haunting, and I can totally agree. However, when one thinks of Live, more often than not, the one album that comes to mind is this one. One night, I was listening to this whole disc while trying to fall asleep. I can't remember when I did doze off, but I do remember waking up enough to hear "Pillar of Davidson", and from that point on, it became my favorite song on this disc, with it's slow-moving, haunting melody.

This is THE cd to start out with if you are just getting into Live right now. No CD collection is complete without it.

1 out of 5 stars Worst band of all time.......2006-09-09

These guys are the biggest joke in rock music. All of these 5 star reviews are an even bigger joke. Ed Kowizsychik(SP) or however you want to spell it sounds as pathetic as he looks. This is garbage, plain & simple. Im glad radio is no longer saturated with their music. 20 years from now, no one will remember this group.

5 out of 5 stars Poetic brilliance........2006-08-20

While in college I must have listened to this CD over a thousand times. Finally someone must have gotten sick and tired of hearing it and it mysteriously vanished on me. I never raplaced it and now I see it's not even available by amazon. Thankfully it is still available used.
I'm not the biggest Live fan but this CD is a masterpiece by any standard.
If you haven't listened to Throwing Copper then you're missing out on a great piece of music. I rank this up there with Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon. Not to say it sounds the same but it's just as good.
And it's almost impossible to listen to Throwin Copper without singing along. Great driving to and from work music.

5 out of 5 stars Throwing Copper is Music Gold.......2006-07-24

What a great album. I've always been a fan of this band, not a huge fan, but a fan nonetheless. This is probably the best Live has put out in my opinion. From beginning to end pretty much every track is good. There are a few not so good ones but mostly the entire album is great. My favorite songs from the album are "I Alone", "Lightning Crashes", "White Discussion", and "Waitress". Here are my track ratings...

1. Dam at Otter Creek - 9/10
2. Selling the Drama - 9.5/10
3. I Alone - 10/10
4. Iris - 9.5/10
5. Lightning Crashes - 10/10
6. Top - 9.5/10
7. All Over You - 9/10
8. Shit Towne - 9/10
9. T.B.D. - 9.5/10
10. Stage - 8/10
11. Waitress - 10/10
12. Pillar of Davidson - 8.5/10
13. White, Discussion - 10/10
14. (Hidden Track) - 7/10

Overall: 91% A-

It's a solid album by a really good band. I have other cd's by them but this one is probably the best they've done. If you enjoy the radio singles a lot and other stuff Live has done you will probably end up liking the entire "Throwing Copper" album. It's an album that delivers.

5 out of 5 stars Live Stood Out.......2006-06-24

I was a child of the 90's and this CD basically identfies the music I listened to when I was growing up. There was Nirvana, Pearl, STP, which all had great songs. Live, however, stood out from the pack of the grunge bands(Even thought Throwing Copper is not grunge) and impacted me tremendously. Obviously, there are mistakes on their album, and every album of theirs to follow, but TC really is passionate and powerful: from Ed's raw and passionate voice to every member of Live working together and contributing.

Their next couple of albums to follow are also incredible.

    Album Description

Extremely accomplished debu m ssachusetts band, originally released in the US on RCA (LSP4368). Following the eponymous album's success, the band toured extensively as the opening act for the Allman Brothers. Fat's mix of east coast blues and west coast psychedelia, strongly influenced by Quicksilver Messenger Service et aI, could have propelled the band into the big time, but an unfortunate drug bust led RCA to cancel a planned follow-up album, and try as they might, the group were unable to secure another recording contract, although two further albums were released in the late '70s, both of which were produced by ex-Mountain man, Felix Papallardi. Over the years Fat toured with a host of rock luminaries, haring the stage with, amongst others, Grand Funk Railroad, Little Richard, Bonnie And Delaney, Johnny Winter and Robin Trower, but unfortunately their success as a live band didn't translate into commercial success. This self-titled album is probably the finest of their recordings, and gives us a taste of just what might have been had the band stayed straight. Another excellent album that comes highly recommended. Self titled .2006

5 out of 5 stars They deserve ten stars.......2006-08-09

I was so glad to finally get a copy of this on CD. So good to hear my dear friends again. They were local favorites in western Mass in the late 60's, often playing for free in the park and at anti war rallies. They were so incredibly tight, heavy at times and sublte when they need to be. On stage they were like a group of warlocks around a cauldron of music, they absolutly COOKED! Their shows would be packed when 'national (and international) acts' playing across town would be near empty. Too bad they never got the fame they deserved. This CD is a 'must have', it is truly a timeless piece of great blues rock.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, excellent, excellent.......2006-06-17

I bought this as an LP back in the 70's by accident. It was in a deleted bin. I thought I would check it out because the members of the band had long hair. What a great surprise. The first Pearl Jam album actually reminded me of Fat. I think it was mostly because of Eddie's vocals. If you like rock you will fully enjoy Fat. You have to get it! Not an easy item to find.

5 out of 5 stars OLD 70'S MUSIC THAT IS NEW TO ME.......2007-06-22

I just got this in the mail last week unlike a lot of other cd's i get it usually takes me a couple of listen's to get use to it but not this time.
This cd started and finished and i liked it right away. I have listened to it 5 or 6 time's since i got it.Very good guitar playing since this is what i usually like i noticed it right away but after listening to it some more i realized the whole band rock's and stand out on there own as the cd keep's going. I don't like to compare group's but if you like 70's rock i believe you will like this. I have been trying new music from that time as i have a lot of the mainstreame stuff and so far i have purchased 3 cd's from the radioactive label so far and i have enjoyed all 3 i will keep trying this label it has been good so far the only problem if you can call it one is there is no information on the band which is unfortunate because it would be nice to know what happened to them after this cd. Thank's for reading.

5 out of 5 stars This Is Some Great Overlooked Rock.......2007-03-21

I bought this album (on the 700 West label) in the 80's but only played it once or twice. I was just overwhelmed with other albums at the time and it got lost in the shuffle. Jump forward to 2007 and I burned it to a CD. After listening to it a few times, I must say this is one great album. When I heard people compare it to Led Zeppelin, I almost didn't give it a listen as I can't stand Zep. But lucky for me, I did listen and it doesn't sound enough like Led Zeppelin to turn me off.

There are some great tunes on here and very good musicianship. I also like the vocals. My only problem was after the first listen, the album seemed to drag down with some lousy songs and then pick back up again with High Steppin' Stomper. However, when I listened to it a few more times, I found that all the songs were good except one, Hey, Lover. That one song drags the whole album down a notch.

However, one throw away track does not stop me from loving the rest of the songs. This is a lost classic and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for some good metal/hard rock back in the days when they knew how to do it right.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Grodeck Whipperjenny.......2004-09-04

This album was done by a man named Dave Matthews (no, not that one), who was the great James Brown's arranger. On this album, Dave mans his own band, and they cook up some of the most insane acid-funk ever known to man! Unfortunately, the album never did well. The album features various styles, such as light, popish ballads to cool off to after the subsiding funk workout the listener is subjected to just before. Conclussions, the instrumental track, features some great string work, and the last piece is a cooking fusion jam sure to put a grin on your face. Some people might be put off by the singer's voice, which is kind of high and raspy, but I don't mind it! It fits nicely with the growling guitars and snarling organs. Definitely pick this up if you're into acid-rock, but aren't afraid to get down and funky a bit. Also good for heavy psychedelia fans.

    3 out of 5 stars Ministry's kick-off!.......2007-05-31

This is the second album of MINISTRY, and the one they truly started being "industrial". It had nothing to do with their soft pop-rock bedut album ("With Sympathy"), and here Ministry got really wild, even though it was a purely electronic album.
Nowadays it sounds a little out-dated, and is of real interest only to the fans of the group, or to those who would like some history lessons on how Industrial music evolved. Their next album "The Land Of Rape And Honey" is what really made MINISTRY the group they are now.

4 out of 5 stars Early ELP Fans Take Note!!!.......2006-06-11

This was a great, lost find in terms of early progressive rock. A trio comprised of keyboards, guitar and bass, drums and percussion, and from AMERICA, no less! This album is very comparable to the very first ELP album, and came out in 1971. Anyone who thinks (like I did) that all of America had its musical head up its you-know-what MUST get a listen to this music.
Only 4 tracks make up this one and only release by Polyphony.
    1. Crimson Dagger
    2. Ariel's Flight
    3. Juggernaut
    3. 30-Second Thing in 39 Seconds
Two of the tracks come in at 13+ and 15+ minutes each, while a third is just over 7 minutes long. The last track (humorously titled) actually clocks in at just over 1:15. The lyrics are off-kilter, enigmatic, and would fit in oh-so-well with those great British and German prog rock bands of the early 70's.
If you like ELP, Genesis, or Gentle Giant, do check out this gem of a domestic release, and be proud that not all American musicians were trying to be "the next Eagles" or "the next...[whatever]".

Getting their start in Brooklyn, New York, they recorded their debut album in 1999 but found no outlet for its release. AM Radio also got a nice head start with new fans when their song 'I Just Wanna Be Loved' was heard by millions on the hit WB TV series Smallville, the track also appears on the Smallville soundtrack. I totally loved this entire CD! Few bands come along with cds that you can honestly say every last song is great. Its got an awesome mix of rock, alternative and even a little indie all rolled into one. Weezer even calls itself a mega fan of Am radio. One downside about this kickass band is the are ulterly impossible to find online for tour dates and more info. But we can all change that! BUY the CD, it rocks!

The guitar playing was OK, nothing amazing, but the lyrics were the most boring words I have ever heard. I have to agree with Jason, the only other reviewer who gave this less than 5 stars. Do the other reviewers not care what the band is singing? Unless AM Radio comes up with a lot more creativity, I don't think they're going anywhere soon. I wouldn't waste your money on this tasteless, boring album, but hey almost all the other reviewers gave it 5 stars so maybe it's just me who cares about what the band is saying.

2 out of 5 stars The reviews made me buy it!!!!.......2004-03-11

There have been many times in the past where I'll use this site to explore similar artists to ones that I know and love, and take a chance on unfamiliar artists if I can find the CD for a cheap enough price. This was the case with the band, AM Radio and their debut "Radioactive". Comparisons of this band were made by other reviewers to the excellent band, Rooney, and unanimous 5 star reviews made me believe that this band would blow me away. So it was an utmost shock to me that this release was just incredibly bland. I've certainly heard worse, but there is nothing going on with this album that makes me agree with everyone else. The songs are horribly simplistic, the hooks aren't impressive, the vocals are weak and trite, and the lyrics don't even reach Blink-182 level (another band that I'm not entirely fond of). I'm not going to let this rare occasion keep me from taking chances on discovering new bands based on others' positive feedback, but it's certainly going to make me download select tracks before making another blind purchase. I'm predicting that this band will not make another record, and will land in the heap of mediocre and rightfully forgotten bands like Nerf Herder and Loud Lucy (in other words, the $1 bin at your local CD store).

    5 out of 5 stars RAD C-D.......2003-08-31

am radio is one of the greatest bands out there! i went to the eve6 concert expecting to be blown away by eve6... of course i was, but am radio was also there, and WOW they\'re AWESOME. all the songs on the c-d rock. if you\'re looking for a good pop/punk c-d be sure to pick up RADIOACTIVE!!

5 out of 5 stars Blow Your Socks Off.......2003-08-27

If your looking to get a pretty average CD look elsewhere cause AM Radio's debute album is way above standard rock band CDs out there. I saw these musicians live in concert and after hearing the first song I knew I had to have the album (not to mention a t-shirt!). The first five songs absolutely solidified my fan-dom of AM Radio and the end of the CD finishes up nicely. My personal favorites on the disc are Hush and Media Life. This band is awsome now, just wait till later- I wouldn't be suprised if the surpassed well-known rock/punk bands (like Good Charlotte and New Found Glory who, for the record, don't even compare in sound and originality to Am Radio) in fame status. Their music is definetly worth your money and time, so without further adeu I invite you to buy their CD for your listening pleasure.....

    5 out of 5 stars Toto-Inspired Galactic Project.......2006-03-26

Suppose you love TOTO, Chicago and want them to be a bit harder what sort of music would come about?

Tommy Denander from Sweden has the answer.

Indeed, the third album collaborated with classic rock superstars, you name it, Bobby Kimball, Jim Peterik, Ingswei Malmsteen, Neal Schon and a lot more.....is such a dream come true. Radioactive previously made super albums such as CEREMONY OF INNOCENCE, YEAH but this third one is a lot better than these.

    ALBUM HIGHLIGHTS

STRONGER THAN YESTERDAY: Must-add for AAA stations. Reminding me some of prime-time Chicago songs.
TAKEN: Bobby Kimball can have such hard-rock vocal! Unmissable for Toto fans.
PREMONITION: Collaborated with melodic rock legend Jim Peterik, another essential for AAA stations.
LOVE IS ON YOUR MIND: That's what Radioactive is! Catchy and uptempo sing-along song.

    Verdict: Impeccable AOR album.
    Rating: 96 out of 100
Recommended for: Journey, TOTO, Survivor, Chicago, Fergie Frederiksen, Pride of Lions fans.

4 out of 5 stars Outstanding production as usual!.......2006-02-16

Tommy Denander is a modern day musical hero. His series of albums under the Radioactive name are all brilliant and this CD continues the tradition of high quality music. Yet again he's written a whole album of great songs and he's managed to maintain his trademark awesome production technique. I love how he makes his albums sound - very loud and very polished. As usual, he's got lots of great musicians helping him out. My favourite song is Taken with its excellent vocals from Toto's Bobby Kimball. This song is out of this world with its intense guitar riffs, cool synth sounds and wicked panning of background effects. You can't go wrong with any Tommy Denander release so check out all the Radioactive titles!

5 out of 5 stars AOR All Star Album!!!.......2005-12-15

Radioactive - Taken is essentially an AOR All-Star Band. It includes: Neal Schon (Journey), Kelly Keagy (Night Ranger), Steve Geroge (Mr. Mister), Jim Peterik (Survivor), Michael Landau (Richard Marx), Michael Thompson (Faith Hill), Bruce Gaitsch (Richard Marx), Tom Keane (Chicago), Johan Fahlberg (Jaded Heart), James Christian (House Of Lords), Bruce Kulick (Kiss), Greg Phillinganes (Eric Clapton), Jeff & Steve Porcaro (Toto), Bobby Kimball (Toto), Steve Lukather (Toto) & Fergie Frederiksen (Toto). But at least all the different singers & musicians mesh well together. If you are a fan of AOR, Toto, Chicago, Foreigner, Journey then this is the CD for you.
