Customer Reviews:
one of the few truly great live rock albums.......2007-06-19
the smiths only official live album 'rank' is a treasure among live albums.. morrissey's charismatic stage presence and vocal talent obviously seem to steal the show.. but this is a great band effort with some great guitar playing by johnny marr... the song selection covered all their albums up to that time and featured their current single 'ask'.. There is a great excitement to this album.. the band sounds fresh and daring.. it is a shame that they would break up so soon.. but that is the way it goes.. morrissey would go on to what is still proving to be a great solo career..
Morrissey: better live than recorded.......2006-07-18
I bought this album way back in the early 90s. At first I didn't like it, Morrissey changed some of the lyrics to some of his hit songs. After giving the tape another try, this album put its hooks into me and has not let-go since then. I believe Morrissey is 10X better live than recorded. I have seen him in concert three times and he is never a disappointment as a live act. Songs like "The Drazie Train" are not found on other albums and are a must-have for the true fan. Of all the albums, this is really not an album but a piece of Smiths history. It is a true treasure. These versions are refreshing departures from the studio-recorded songs. My advice: Buy all of the original Smiths albums and this one too. Don't waste your money on any of the "Best Of" albums.
The End.......2005-08-10
By the time this came out, the Smiths had ended. A recording from their aborted tour which the shocking news of the breakup was heard. Not the best of The Smiths live but an energetic album the same. Worthwhile to the diehard Smiths fan and the new.
Solid if inessential live album.......2005-04-14
While live Smiths was usually awesome to listen to, this album, recorded during the end of the last tour the Smiths ever undertook, while good, isn't essential except to diehard Smiths fans. The performances are good and interesting, but it's not their most inspired performance, although it was one of the better ones from the end of the tour. However, I read somewhere that the band initially wanted it released as a 2CD set to include the whole concert, while Morrissey crypitcally refused and instead compiled this 1CD set that was released. Knowing Morrissey, I guess we'll never know why he did that, as the complete show would have been a treat.
I know it's Over.......2004-05-27
And you will too when you listen the this CD. Not that it's that bad, it's just a let down, a big let down. The band is sloppy, too fast, and Morrissey vocals are openly over the top playing off on some derivative of his former self. Almost as if he could care less of what is now just all a big joke. Maybe I'm being too rough but that is what it seems like! Clearly the band final days were felt. All songs are inferior to the studio versions. This opposed to Hatful of Hollow which blew the studio versions away in many cases.

What's all the fuss, they ain't like us.......2007-06-22
I was just messin' around on Amazon, thinking I wouldn't find any R&F on CD but searching anyway, just to see what would come up. The three Ranky spank albums weren't released on CD for the longest time (the third one was actually on CD in the 80s but went out of print), until Rhino Handmade got in on the action a few years ago and I got a coupla copies of that great compilation (which included the awesome "Post Office" and "Klansman").
But now, lo and behold, what a great surprise, here it is on CD. This CD rules the universe, no doubt. First track to last. The best "cowpunk" ever ever ever. Get it or be deprived of the best music, maynnnn. Superfan Pam pities the fool who doesn't snatch this up.
Not rank, file under ROCK.......2007-05-21
I don't know where my LP went (but I still had the pre-recorded tape), it might have been stolen or maybe I sold it, but I'm sure glad this is now on CD.
Kind of punk, kind of country, but pure rock. My fave tracks are: Ananda Ruth, Conductor Wore Black and Rank and File. But don't take that the wrong way, all the songs a great. One disapointment, the lyric sheet is printed in such a small font, you might think that it is a legal disclaimer.
It's kind of like listening to Johhny Cash on speed. I find myself reaching for the volume knob very often as the CD plays. Play it loud and play it often. Your ears will thank you for it.
Cheers, Tom
The only punk(ish)/country album ever? Clearly the finest........2006-01-13
Man, can these guys write music. The two brothers from the DILS, one of L.A.'s original punk bands got together with A. Escovedo from that very musical family if I'm not mistaken. This first album is head and shoulders better than their second album much in the same way that TELEVISION's Marquee Moon debut album is that much better than their second one.
And what a gem this is. I kept trying to see if there was some reissue version of this album with some sorta extra trax, either live or from some 7". No luck. Just 9 songs like the vinyl lp. The closest we get is two separate listings of the apparently same album on amazon.com which, well, didn't satisfy my music lust for obtaining more of this band's awesome songs. I have the album but I couldn't resist getting this CD.
I said for years that this album is too punk for country fans and too country for punk fans. After re-listening to it upon getting the CD (ok, ok, I'm busted, I rarely listen to my lps, least I finally bought a turn table after years of the vinyl just sitting around) I realized this isn't really punk. The only way it's punk is that the two brothers were formerly in a punk band. But it surely isn't straight country. I'm not sure how I can put my finger on it. All I know is, there's only one country act I like (of course, JOHNNY CASH) but if there were more bands that sounded like this I'd be all into them too.
The older I get the more it's clear that strong songwriting is a big deal, along with a fine voice. This band has it in spades. Really sing along songs. I just can't help myself. In fact, I'd put this album right in there with my other two most favorite albums where you basically can't help but sing along with almost every song: the MISFITS Walk Among Us and COCKNEY REJECTS Greatest Hits Vol. 1. I love music that sounds real American and RANK AND FILE totally captures that essense here. When John Doe and Excene do the KNITTERS getting their rootsy/country thang goin' it doesn't take me anywhere. This, this is perfection. Robust, stompin' really, and beautiful harmonies. Before I forget I gotta turn my dad onto this. He's 80. He loves good music but grew up with big band but turns out he loves NEIL YOUNG (ok, acoustic) and is real impressed with the honest presentation of BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN.

You Need This.......2005-10-27
Before the Americana/No Depression music came out, there was Rank And File. Back then it was known as Cowpunk (whatever that meant) as the Kinman Brothers, formerly leading the Punk band Dils, moved to Austin and recuited then unknown Alejandro Escovedo and Slim Evans and became Rank and File. On the album, side one had some heavy hitters such as Amanda Ruth (later covered by the Everly Brothers), Glad I'm Not In Love, and the band named Rank And File to which they throw in part of Ernest Tubb's Thanks a Lot to really throw a curve and The Conductor Wore Black to end things out on a classic note. On the title track Sundown, Tony Kinman's voice echos Johnny Cash, although on further listening, probaly inspired upcoming Nashville singer Josh Turner (probaly not but would it be amazing if Josh Turner had a copy of Sundown tucked there between the Randy Travis and Johnny Cash records in his collection), and thought the next three songs are pretty good, the album ends with the rocking Coyote. Soon afterwards Jason And the Scorchers would surface with their Fervor EP, which later Uncle Tupelo would later incoporate both styles into their No Depression leadoff, but Sundown was pioneering stuff, again falling into the too rock for country and too country for rock radio, which lead some lucky listeners to hear it on public radio (to which I heard the Rank And File song first and was knocked out and it took forever to find the album)
Sadly good things don't seem to last and Alejandro Escovedo left to form the equally just as good True Believers whose albums were reissued on Rykodisc and have fallen out of print but you can still get it fairly cheap but that's another story. Rhino Handmade paired Sundown and Long Gone Dead a limited edition called The Slash Years and copies went by fast. However rejoice in the fact that Collector's Choice has heard the calls and have reissued both Sundown and Long Gone Dead on seperate CDs.
Sooooo, if you want to hear one of the best albums of the 80s, better than anything that MTV ever promote, and if you want to hear the beginnings of Americana, you need Sundown. It's that simple.

Album Description
In his latest recording, John King pays tribute to the music of Na Lani Eha, the Heavenly Four, Hawaiian royalty who were well known music lovers and gifted composers. Through their social and political influence, David Kalakaua (1836-91), Lydia Kamakaeha Paki (Liliuokalani, 1838-1917), Miriam Likelike (1851-87), and William Pitt Leleiohoku (1854-77) helped to create and popularize a new musical idiom that synthesized traditional Hawaiian poetics with New England-style hymnody.
The sixteen tracks of Royal Hawaiian Music include pieces written by, or dedicated to, the Heavenly Four in the late 19th century, arranged and performed on solo ukulele.
Customer Reviews:
John King is a genius.......2007-02-11
Like John King's wonderful CD of Bach for unaccompanied ukulele, this CD literally SINGS. This time, it's music written by members of Hawaii's royal families. Much of the music is very pretty and King's readings of the music are masterful. John King has to be the foremost "classical" ukulele player on the planet, and this CD only enhances that reputation.
Wonderful Uke.......2006-11-10
I'm always so happy to hear beautiful ukulele music. This should be considered a classic recording if it isn't already. It is so well done. I would strongly encourage those with a similar love to buy this CD.
Music fit for a King.......2005-08-15
Performed by a King. John King. Since his initial release of a disc of Bach solos performed on unaccompanied ukulele, King has published two collections of ukulele music, with attendant CDs, and this, a regal recording of Hawaiian crown jewels, Royal Hawaiian Music. Chosen from compositions written by or dedicated to Hawaiian royalty of the 1800s, this CD is simply sumptuous. Music making of the highest order. The listener is never aware of "the man behind the curtain," much less told to pay no attention to him or his ukulele. What flows forth from the sound system speakers is music unencumbered by thoughts of instrumental inadequacies overcome by technical triumphs (of which there are plenty). It's just beautiful music, beautifully performed.
Delve deeply into the expertly written liner notes (by King) and one learns of the tragic and triumphant origins of some of the most poignant-and under-rated-music of the late-nineteenth century. The haunting `Ka Ipo Lei Manu' written by Queen Kapiolani upon learning of the death of her husband, King Kalakaua. And the celebratory `Kalakaua March' written in honor of the king's visit to San Francisco in the 1870s. I doubt if you can find a recording of the original piano version of this march or the several others Mr. King plays that were written by Henry Berger and published as piano solos in his collection `Mele Hawaii' in the 1880s.
There are several fine ukulele virtuosi before the public today, but I doubt any could handle this repertoire. Their styles are too idiosyncratic. King seems to be quietly building a foundation of repertoirial and technical benchmarks future generations of players can aspire to. Above all, he has the temperament of a classicist: his tone is perfection, interpretation faultless; the music speaks to us. I find it astonishing to admit, considering the instrument and the origins of the music, but this is transcendent music wonderfully, lovingly made. Buy it. Aloha.

Unknown Gem!!.......2004-04-26
I stumbled into this CD by mere chance! I have ca.900 CD's, but this is the one I play the most just now. My friends, all hard veterans when it comes to music, envy me "Rank and File". How on earth is Mark Germino unknown to the musical world? His voice has a raw, real sound, which can NOT be said of 99% of the singers today.
Amazing. Don't buy one copy... buy two........1999-08-08
This 4th release from Mark Germino is "acoustic", but don't let that fool you. It's heavy handed, pointed, and cuts to the bone with insight and lyrical genious that only M.G. can pull off. Because Mark Germino is so overtly ignored in popular music, his records never stay available for long. So, do what I do. Don't buy one copy, buy two... and shelf it for the next generation in your family. He's Amazing.
Rank & File is as good as alt-country gets!.......1999-03-14
Mark Germino is so under-rated it hurts. This CD is as fine a collection of stripped-down roots-rock as I've heard. I have all of his CD's and this one is one of his finest. It's more intimate than his others, and yet each song is as powerful and emotional as any rock tune. "Felix Tucker's Biggest Lie" could be made into a movie. "Black Angel Cure" is powerful. "Drivin' Across America" sounds like a bonified alt-country hit to me. Why are artists like Mark Germino ignored? Maybe because his songs contain the unpainted truth! Buy this CD. You won't be disappointed.
Lyrics that make you think. Now there's a rare thing........1998-07-07
Don't buy this album if you want great singing. Don't buy this album if you want an easy listen. What you get here is a coherent set of songs from one of America's finest songwriters. The playing is mostly acoustic, using simple tunes and regular song formats which draw the listener to focus on the lyrics. These are sometimes passionate but more often display Germino's dry wit. The lyrics challenge various assumptions about life and leave the listener to re-evaluate some old habits. Listen to "Fire In The Land Of Grace" and think about how we treat celebrities, alive and dead. If this world was a fair place, Mark Germino would be rich and famous. But then he might not be the same man he is now.

Most romantic trance tune!.......2004-07-26
Absolutely fabulous! Not a boring re-make. They have breathed new life into the classic song 'Airwave'.
This song is dreamy and loving.
If you like Justine Suissa (of OceanLab), you'll like this.
Trance at it's best!.......2004-03-06
This was one of the songs that first had me addicted to Trance. This single has a bit of vocals for all the tracks unlike the album version which is instrumental. The instrumental track on the album is great but the vocals is what makes Breathing (Airwave) over the top. This song begins quite mellow and soothing then has a great build up which makes you go crazy. I highly recommend this single for all dance/trance lovers. I believe there is also a enhanced version of this single with extra mixes.
Although not creative, not bad to listen to.......2003-11-04
this song is basically just the group's song 'Airwave', with new vocals...just like they did for true love never dies(the same song again) i'm one to talk though, i wrote to Rank 1's record label, and asked to record a song called "my love you can't deny' using their song airwave as the background, so i guess i'm a hypocrite. anyway, it's not a boring song...

slavery's claim was that man would own man...throw it down, John Brown!.......2007-06-22
Yeah, yeah, "Sundown" is just the pinnacle of awesomeness, and David Kahne knew how to get the Kinman brothers' sound to just echo and ring so wonderfully.
But this CD's really good too, despite Kahne's absence. Chip and Tony's songwriting skills are still as great as ever. The title track, "Hot Wind," "John Brown," "Sound of the Rain," "It don't matter" are especially good.
Excellent 80's country rock-n-roll.......2006-01-11
The sharp lead guitar of Alejandro Escovedo isn't present for Rank and File's second lp, but "Long Gone Dead" is nearly as good as the debut. It's more layered than "Sundown", with some fiddles and pedal steel, but this works well within the framework of the songs. "The Sound of The Rain", Rank and File's best original song, is the album's centerpiece, but the rest, including a cover of Lefty Frizzel's "I'm An Old, Old Man", all sound fine. Stan Lynch of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers is the drummer for this outing.
Rank and File would record one more album after this, for Rhino, but it was quite lame (I don't know why Collector's Choice is even releasing it, or why "Long Gone Dead" and "Sundown" aren't combined). You could tell the band knew its career was at an end when the 3rd album's acknowledgements read simply, "Thanks, to no one."

It's about time!.......2005-03-15
Way back in the early 1980's at the height of the Rock-a-billy revival in which the Stray Cats were at the front of, there was another musical revolution occuring. Based mostly on the west coast there was a movement to reclaim Country & Western music from the knuckle heads like Kenny Rogers and smooth slick producers who produced that kind of smaltz. Singer/song writers like Dwight Yoakum and bands like The Blasters and Los Lobos were carving a spot in popular music for just such a revolution, called by the media, who needs to label everything least they don't understand it, "COWPUNK"
Then in 1982, four ex-punk band members decided to give country music a try after seeing punk band after punk band sell out.
Rank & File was formed from those ex-punkers and their debut album "Sundown" was excellent to say the least. Well writen songs by the Kinman Brothers and with strong guitar work by Alejandro Escovedo with vocals by the Kinmans and Mark Germino(very Johnny Cash influenced, I must say on "The Conductor Wears Back") make up this excellent first effort.
The "DIXIE" guitar lead-in on the title track can not be beat! It's about time that it's available on Compact disc.
Check out their sophmore effort "Long Gone Dead", also just made avilable on CD.
If you like Rank & File and "Sundown" go listen to The Beat Farmers and the Cowboy Junkies and, of course, Dwight Yoakum and The Blasters.
With this re-release, "COWPUNK" LIVES!

Album Description
Chinese classical music is a much larger field than Western classical music. It covers a huge geographical area as well as a time frame of thousands of years. Although some of China's musical instruments have changed very little in hundreds or thousands of years, others were adapted to Western standards under the influence of Russian musicians during the middle of this century. In some cases, frets were added to non-chromatic instruments and tonalities standardized. The liner notes of
The Hugo Masters: An Anthology of Chinese Classical Music contain extensive documentation of the various instruments used in Chinese solo and orchestral music, with descriptions of their history and modifications, as well as an essay to help Western listeners understand the background of Chinese classical music.
The instruments fall into four categories, each constituting a separate compact disk:
Volume One: Bowed Strings
Volume Two: Plucked Strings
Volume Three: Woodwinds
Volume Four: Percussion
These disks are available individually or as a collector's series in a beautifully designed silk boxed set.
The music itself is highly varied and richly emotional. The music paints pictures of China's people, their culture and homeland, and their dreams and their despair.
The Hugo Masters: An Anthology of Chinese Classical Music is a joint effort of the Hugo and Celestial Harmonies labels to bring this definitive anthology to listeners worldwide. This is the first time these recordings have become available to audiences outside of Hong Kong. For listeners unfamiliar with Chinese classical music, these works are a powerful and emotional awakening.

MUST MUST MUST MUST (didn't I mention MUST) have..........2001-02-20
Rank 1's Airwave is stellar. On a grand universal scale. Blackholes, nebulae, star clusters, supergalaxies, and so on. That good. While the jr. vasquez mixes might not appeal to trance purists, if you like a good vocal thrown in, you'll like it. I happen to love the jr. vasquez remixes. What's wrong with a little human emotion thrown in? And while the main melody isn't as prominent as in the dutch force mix, it's still there. All the mixes are good though, and offer different moods. It's really more of an EP then a single, it's so good. BUY BUY BUY. I can GUARANTEE that it will bring much dance goodness into your life.
BREATHTAKING.......2000-09-19
This is undoubtedly one of the trance tunes of the year, having already gone top 10 in the U.K. Pick of the mixes is the Dutch Force Vs ATB mix, which combines a beautiful melody with euphoric synth riffs, all woven together by an unstoppable four-to-the-floor beat which will render many clubbers breathless. This song contains the perfect combination of a serene main hook coupled with the killer beats, who needs drugs to enhance the music when it's this good in the first place? Also look out for other material from Dutch Force (aka Rank 1): their U.K. single "Deadline" is well worth a listen, as are the Rank 1 remixes of System F's "Cry", "Superstring" by Cygnus X and a wicked bootleg of "Airwave" entitled "True Love Never Dies (On The Airwave)".
very nice.......2000-09-16
Six tracks here. ATB mix, two junior vasquez mixes, two dutch remixes and a chillout mix. I dont like either of the junior vasquez mixes because well for one they sound NOTHING like the song, and its not in the style of german/dutch trance. The other tracks on here are very good though. The atb mix is high-energy and the chillout mix is just so peaceful and serene. THe dutch force remixes are very good as well, more trancey and glittery than the atb mix. I think this is also 3 bucks cheaper than the other rank1 airwave singles so this is your best bet i THINK. ENjoy
