5 out of 5 stars A great collection of klezmer favorites!.......2006-09-30

Premiere violinist Itzhak Perlman is joined live in concert by four premiere klezmer groups: Brave Old World, The Klezmatics, Andy Statman, and the Klezmer Conservatory Band. Vibrant, poignant and distinctly old-world, klezmer is the musical style that developed among Eastern European Jews. Featuring the soulful fire of violin, clarinet, accordion, mandolin and vocal leads, accompanied by cimbalom (a hammered-dulcimer), piano, drums. There are a few soulful slow tunes mixed in amongst the fiery dances, but most of the selections on "Live in the Fiddler's House" are fun and up tempo, full of the instrumental virtuosity one would expect both of this genre, and of a concert violinist of Itzhak Perlman caliber. Klezmer is some of the world's best good-time music, right up there with Irish jigs, Cajun two-steps and country banjo pickin'. But it's not all sweetness and light; inherent in the mournful, minor mode of this traditional music is blend of opposites--both the sorrow of persecution and defiant sense of fun-in-the-moment inherent of a culture displaced, trying to maintain its identity in an ever-changing and often hostile world. And therein lies klezmer's appeal to the soul. For more great Jewish music, try any of the separate releases by Brave Old World, The Klezmatics, Andy Statman and his band, and the Klezmer Conservatory Band. You might also enjoy "The Hidden Gate: Jewish Music Around the World," the traditional Sephardic music of the group Voice of the Turtle, and the unplugged world fusion of Basya Schechter and Pharoah's Daughter in "Out of the Reeds."

5 out of 5 stars Best Klezmer album.......2004-11-16

To me, this is the best klezmer album I've ever listened to (and I have quite a few). And it's a live album. Although it's a kind of live version of "In the Fiddler's House", the repertoire is not the same (they only share one or two songs). The bands accompanying Itzhak Perlman are at their best (they are the best klezmer performers!). I prefer, personally, Andy Statman's clarinet and mandolin (Andy's Ride and Meron Nign/In the Sukke are my favorites); then there are great moments with Brave Old World (Doina Naftule and A Hora mit Branfn are beautiful pieces) and the Klezmatics, of course. The 12 minute finale is an absolute well crafted medley, under Klezmer Conservatory Band's leader, Hankus Netsky. I did'n want it to end.
I don't like at all the women voices of Klezmer Conservatory Band, although the instrumental pieces (like Khosidl) are amazing.
There is not a second in this album which is not top klezmer.

5 out of 5 stars This was a fun C.D........1999-01-16

For people who are into Klezmer music this is the finest C.D.! For Klezmer music lovers, this is a masterpiece.

It's not that I hate opera, it's rather that I cannot handle and entire opera without nodding off. This 4 disc CD provides highlights from the most famous and recognizable arias, i.e., Pagliacci, Carmen, Rigoletto, Madame Butterfly, La Boheme, The Mikado, and H.M.S. Pinafore -- just to mention a few. I appreciate the ability to enjoy select arias from some of the most beautiful and and exceptional operas in the world, and played by first class orchestras, without having to sit through the entire opera.

    5 out of 5 stars A true, enduring masterpiece!.......2005-09-01

There have been many milestones in film music history that have resonated through the decades finding new audiences and inspiring new recordings.

Unique among them is "The Egyptian," a major collaboration between uber-composers Bernard Herrmann (to whom the film was assigned) and Alfred Newman (20th Century-Fox Music Department head and all-time great composer/conductor). While Herrmann got the initial assignment, the allotted time was inadequate for him to do justice to the film. Newman stepped in and developed thematic materials which Herrmann incorporated into his own desginated sections of the film, while Newman the rest.

In my opinion, "The Egyptian" -- as a film -- stands well above most epics of the 50s, but it has some serious detractors who, for whatever reasons, find no value in the authentic atmosphere, fantastic sets, stunning cinematography and brilliant music underscoring. Add to that some solid performances from Victor Mature, Jean Simmons, Peter Ustinov and Michael Wilding (plus a stolid, if uninvolving leading performance by Edmund Purdom) and you really get a stunning piece of entertainment that holds the attention, dazzles the eyes and ears and becomes emotionally involving. Wilding, as the pharaoh, has the film's -- and one of filmdom's -- best moments near the end of the film. Newman's underscoring for that scene -- called "Death of Akhnaton" -- is an example of what film scoring is all about. It also heightens awareness of what seems to be missing from many of today's film composers resumes -- intensive education in music theory, counterpoint, harmony and exposure to all forms of music. The scene is breathtaking, heartbreakingly performed and musically overwhelming, although the music is always "under" the scene rather than rampaging over it.

There are so many wonderful pieces of music in this film that I acknowledge my inadequacy to present a case for them. The proof is in the listening. From the awe-inspiring opening to the exquisite theme for "Merit" to the sinuous, hypnotic theme for "Nefer", Herrmann and Newman have created a musical palette of stunning splendors. There is no other soundtrack album like it.

I cannot overstate its importance, the splendiferousness of its performance on this recording by the 20th Century-Fox Studio Orchestra as conducted by Alfred Newman, and the glorious choral work of Newman's right-hand man, Ken Darby.

This is film music history. Any collection without it is hollow.

    4 out of 5 stars Worthy...but not superior.......2007-04-15

I already own the original-issue MCA/Decca studio recording CD as well as the Film Score Monthly soundtrack CD for this rousing good score, so for the completist in me, I bought the NAXOS/Marco Polo digital re-recording.

It's a worthy effort, but the performance lacks the "enthusiasm" of the originals. I just didn't "feel it," even with the always-excellent recording standards of the Stromberg/Morgan team. This is most evident during the spiritual passages and particularly during the two Hymn to Aton sequences, where neither the glory nor the tragedy comes across.

No slam at the Soviet chorus (they've proved themselves well enough in other projects), but their accents on the English text really became distracting on this disc.

Also, the balance between the orchestra and the chorus is variable at best and at times the brass lines drown out the parts where the chorus is supposed to be prominant.

On the plus side, the liner notes for this CD were excellent and very informative. At 71 minutes, the addition of so much extra music not found on the original studio recording was welcome; and to have it presented in a "cleaner" digital version than on the FSM soundtrack CD was nice (though I hasten to add that the FSM disc is still THE recording to get).

Overall, a useful addition for completists or those who can't afford the higher-priced studio or soundtrack recordings, but just be aware that some of the "heart" is missing from this one.

2 out of 5 stars Long Live "The Egyptian"!.......2006-02-17

I was extra glad to find this classic for sale through Amazon.

I have loved the movie since I was a little tyke, and after well over a thousand (Yes, 1000!) viewings have caused me to wear out copies of it firstly on Beta, and two subsequent copies on VHS (all self-taped from TV).

The CD of the Soundtrack by Herrmann and Newman is superb, and is every bit as fresh and melodic as it was in 1954 when it accompanied / complimented the film.

The 11 tracks by Alfred Newman are highlighted to indicate their different origins when compared to the bulk of the work by Bernard Herrmann, but the whole CD just blends into a seamless work, almost in the style of a tone poem. The tracks are all there, and it is a delight to listen to them in their full orchestral versions, rather than the snippets that you can hear (tantalising though they are) on the film soundtrack, cluttered up with dialogue and sound FX.

I would recommend this CD to anyone who has fond memories of the film, or admires the work of Herrmann and/or Newman.

(Would also like to see a CD made of Herrmann's music to "Journey to the Centre of the Earth"..........

    Anubis Lives!

    3 out of 5 stars Mummified Music.......2005-12-11

What we have here is a film-score rarity from several perspectives. First, it's a composition co-created by two of the titans of classic-film music, Bernard Herrmann and Alfred Newman. However, there does seem to be much in the way of (or any) cue-by-cue collaboration; the result, unsurprisingly, is not particularly seamless. Mr. Herrmann is credited with independently writing (and conducting) the bulk of the cues--about two thirds of the score. Second, I would not call the score for 1954 film THE EGYPTIAN (TE) "a classic" (the same applies to the film). Not wishing to engender yet another debate over what constitutes "a classic" score or film, to my ears the score for TE is predominately colorless and undistinguished. To be blunt, the music is deadly dull. In this regard, the score mirrors the film which is also a dud! (On this, I can speak from some atmospheric experience, having spent time in Egypt.) And third, the marginal quality of the cues is a major surprise and disappointment given the immensity of the creative talent. Even legendary composers can have bad hair days! On a brighter note, Messrs. John Morgan and William Stromberg, who are unsurpassed masters of film score restoration, reconstruction, arrangement, and presentation, have once again worked their magic with this CD. Their combined execution is stunning, but I sure wish they had tackled a different project. The CD booklet is principally authored by Jack Smith. His analysis of each track is singularly lacking in musicality. He mostly just summarizes what's happening on screen. Mr. Smith also writes that "(w)hen THE EGYPTIAN premiered, critics were polite ... ticket sales were nowhere near the expected box-office tally ... (and the film) then settled into oblivion." Fortunately, the booklet contains a short essay by Mr. Morgan ("Arranger's Notes") and some brief comments by Mr. Stromberg ("Conductor's Note") which are far more informative reads. There is also a rare photograph of Messrs. Morgan and Stromberg slaving over a hot piano. By itself, almost worth the price of admission! The CD is a re-release at "popular prices" of the original which is on the Marco Polo label.

4 out of 5 stars A Film Score by Both Hermann and Newman.......2005-05-08

Very unusually Darryl Zanuck assigned this film score to two of 20th Century Fox's stable of composers, one very established, Alfred Newman, and one a newcomer who was gaining a reputation as a superb writer, Bernard Herrmann. This was for expediency's sake because Newman was also involved at the same time in writing the score for another movie in production, 'There's No Business Like Show Business.' And, in fact, Herrmann wrote most of the score, although some of the cues had melodies written by Newman but expanded and orchestrated by Herrmann; each of those cues had the notation 'music developed by Bernard Herrman from themes composed by Alfred Newman.' (It is of note that Newman did not do any of his own orchestration, leaving that to Edward Powell; Herrmann did all his orchestrations.) Herrmann and Newman each conducted some of the original sound track recording. What is amazing is that there is no fault line between the music written by Newman, a composer of the old Austrian high-romantic camp, and Herrmann, whose style ultimately developed along much more advanced lines (witness his score for 'Psycho').

The movie itself was one of those blood-and-sandal epics so beloved by Hollywood in the 1950s. And it was one of the very first Cinemascope extravaganzas. It was not much of a movie, starring a cipher of an actor, Edmond Purdom. And the story isn't much, either. The music, accordingly, partakes rather too much of the faux-oriental style so familiar from such movies. Still, there are some really memorable passages, particularly those that are of the more intimate scenes. The love scene--the cue is titled 'Her Name was Merit' -- features a really lovely alto flute and oboe d'amore theme with harp and string accompaniment. There are also some scenes of religious splendor -- e.g. Hymn to Aton -- that are also quite striking for all they owe to the temple scene of 'Aïda.'

The score was cut down somewhat for this CD. Originally there were about 100 minutes of music. Film music arranger John Morgan gets credit for making what turns out to be an effective 70 minutes of music that can stand on its own, absent the film. It is played more or less without pause, moving from one cue to the other seamlessly. Veteran film music conductor William Stromberg gets a fairly decent performance out of the Moscow Symphony Orchestra and Choir. This performance was originally issued in 1998 on the full-price Marco Polo label.

This score is a superior example of its type and it is given a creditable performance here.

Everything old is new again. Or perhaps that's what the marketing big-wigs at RCA were thinking when they decided that latest CD by Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops Orchestra should simply be a "greatest hits" package -- selections culled from Lockhart's five previously released CDs. It's a gimmick that works, since those tracks chosen are truly the best of the best: "Riverdance" and "Magh Scola" from the Grammy-nominated "The Celtic Album;" "Sleigh Ride" and "Farandole" from "Holiday Pops;" "The Stars and Stripes Forever" from "A Splash of Pops." To add a bit of freshness, the closes with "Long Live the King!" a medley of Presley tunes recorded love at Boston's Symphony Hall for a PBS special. No wonder he can't help falling in love -- once again -- with the man who keeps a lock on our hearts.

5 out of 5 stars The Boston Pops at Their Best!!.......2001-07-14

This has got to be the best orchestral CD I have ever purchased! My intent for buying the CD was not because of the Pops themselves (I wasn't very familiar with them or Keith Lockhart at the time), but my orchestra had played two of the songs on the CD so I thought it would have been neat to have a professional recording of them. A couple months later, here I am, I know how each one of the songs go, it never leaves my CD player unless I go somewhere (it goes too) and let me tell you Mr. Lockhart is a hottie- whether he knows it or not! Only because of this Cd, (and watching Pops Goes the Fourth) I have bought every other Boston Pops CD conducted by Keith Lockhart. They are outstanding musicians and this is the best "greatest hits so far" CD. It has pretty much 2 songs from each past CD- Tracks 1 and 4 from Runnin' Wild; Tracks 2 and 5 from The Celtic Album; Tracks 3 and 8 from American Visions; Tracks 6 and 9 from Holiday Pops; and tracks 7 and 10 from A Splash of Pops. Track 11 is Keith's introduction to Long Live the King and Track 12 is, obviously, Long Live the King-A Tribute to Elvis which has never been released before. And it's pretty sad I knew all of that without having to look at the CD case, huh? That just shows you how well put together this CD is, with a mix of everything for everyone. From the slow, beautiful "Magh Scola" ("The Level Plain") to "American Patrol" back to "A Hymn to New England" (written by former Boston Pops conductor and composer to just about every famous movie their is John Williams) and of course, their trademark "Stars and Stripes Forever", this CD is perfect for anyone with a love of classical music, or the Boston Pops Orchestra. And their tuba player better watch out- I am definetly going to replace him soon :)

5 out of 5 stars The Best of the Best.......2000-07-26

Keith Lockhart does it again. All of America's favorites on one album plus a tribute to the King. It goes to show what a wonderful and masterful conductor Keith is and what a great orchestra the BSO is. Their finest album with Keith thus far. He truly is one of the best conductors in the business. I highly recommend this to everyone who loves the spirit of the Pops. It's superb all around.

5 out of 5 stars Best of the Boston Pops.......2000-06-25

This is a wonderful repertoire of the kind of music played by the Boston Pop. It's for all ages. If anyone wants one CD that is representative of the Boston Pop Orchestra, this is it! Kudos to Keith Lockhart for including a medley by the King. This is my favorite Boston Pop CD next to "Runnin Wild" and the "Holiday at PoPs".

    5 out of 5 stars 6th CD!.......2000-04-25

I went home this weekend and look what I picked up! The 6th ablum by Mr. Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops! Great CD, love the music selections that Keith made to put in this one and I loved the Long Live the King! A Slaute to Elvis. You haven't heard anything until you have heard a full orchestra play Elvis Presley music. Number six, and it was great! My favorite piece is DoddleTOWN Fifers, or whatever it is called. The MCV (Middlesex County Vouleenters) are great, and I'm not just saying that because I know Earl, the Music Master for the group, they are good.

      Amazon.com

The exploits of Ian Fleming's British super-agent James Bond have long since become the longest running film series in history, spanning 40 years and counting. Not the least of the cycle's charm has been its music, a body of work that encompasses pop clichés (the twangy guitar of Monty Norman's original "James Bond Theme") and elegant underscores alike. While this collection spans music from Dr. No to The World Is Not Enough, decades of various legal entanglements prevented it from becoming the ultimate Bond music anthology. This is more a credible simulation, a newly recorded collection of cues and suites (including music previously unreleased on the original soundtracks) performed by Nic Raine and the City of Prague Symphony Orchestra. With John Barry's lush, ever-evocative scores both forming the core and setting the tone (but also featuring the work of George Martin, David Arnold, Michael Kamen, Bill Conti, and Eric Serra), it's the most comprehensive--if not exactly authentic--collection of Bond music yet attempted. --Jerry McCulley

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars almost the perfect James Bond collection.......2005-07-20

this 4 CD box has most of the familiar James Bond compositions.

Still, some tunes are missing(from for instance Thunderball and For Your Eyes Only)and most of the time the attention is on the instrumental version of the title track which is a bit of a shame. And yet, there are too many great pieces on this collection to make it a failure.Alpine Drive,Dawn Raid at Fort Knox,On Her Majesty's Secret Service(every track),Miss Goodhead and so on.All great pieces that not only show the great talent of John Barry but also the great power of James Bond films.Cause when you hear the music, you see the scenes in front of you.

Very much a recommendation to all Bond and Barry fans although sometimes it focusses too much on title songs. The only solution is to buy all separate soundtracks.

      5 out of 5 stars Good Collection.......2005-02-24

Very nice packaging and good tracks from the Bond music library make this an anoutstanding item. "From Russia With Love" and "Diamonds Are Forever" contain beautiful and energetic renditions. The John Barry music is handled quite well. I didn't real care for the David Arnold selections. "The World Is Not Enough" was weak. Overall it is a good collection just the same.

3 out of 5 stars Not excatly what I expected.......2003-04-10

I when I read some of the reviews of this I thought that this was a complete collection of all the originals of the Theme songs of every James Bond movie and remakes done by the Prague Philharmonic of some of the other songs in the various movies. After recieveing this ... I started to listen to it and found out that it was all done by the orchestra. The are very good, but to a point it is not the same thing as owning a disc will all the orignal songs on it. Overall, this good if all the you want is the orchestral versions of most of the songs in the movies or the suites out of some of the movies. To a point these don't compare to the orignals. Keep looking if you want a set with all the orignals songs in it.

4 out of 5 stars The James Bond CD for the John Barry purist?.......2003-01-28

Let's cut to the chase. Nic Raine and the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra do John Barry's work justice. 90% of this collection is as close as you can get to the original James Bond soundtracks. The other 10% lends itself to some artistic license with respect to the arrangements. Most notable is the main theme to Goldfinger. Also Nic slips in a few previously unreleased tracks. You will find these on the On Her Majesty's Secret Service and Golden Eye tracks. This CD boxed set is definitely made for the Bond soundtrack fan. The die hard John Barry "purist"/ traditionalist may find some of these tracks questionable at first, but after a few times Nic Raine's artistic license gives a fresh perspective to the familiar Bond/ Barry themes. The only reservation I have with this CD set is with some of selections that are performed. For instance, from Goldfinger, "Dawn Raid At Fort Knox" was a poor selection considering the selection available on that particular soundtrack. The most famous 007 soundtrack of all I dare say. Overall Nic hits the mark, and this CD set is a tribute to Barry's (as well as, George Martin's, Marvin Hamlish's, and Bill Conti's and David Arnold's) work. It's all here in one collection. I am a die-hard Bond soundtrack fan, and to the casual soundtrack fan I say this CD is set all you need to experience the Bond music legacy. To those who are hard core 007 soundtrack fans ...this is a FANTASTIC "addition" to your collection. This has to be the BEST (and probably the only) 007 "soundtrack" compilation. Whereas all the others feature the "main themes" from the Bond films as originally recorded, this one truly gives you the Bond experience.

3 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable with most of the BOND music you'd want........2002-12-08

This is similar but more comprehensive than another BOND collection on one CD by the City of Prague Philharmonic. These are good renditions but clearly not the orginals. I must ask if the Prague Philharmonic does not own a harp? It is glaringly missing in the Goldfinger themes and i am sure on others. That harp is an exciting and beautiful touch to the wonderful GOLDFINGER theme and its absents is unfortuneatly very noticeable. Also some of the other themes can even sound muzaky if thats a word(elevator music)
It gets 3 solid stars good collection yet defineatly something is lacking.
