One more in Broadway's series of "jukebox musicals" (Mamma Mia, Movin' Out, Jersey Boys, etc.), All Shook Up features the songs of Elvis Presley. Cheyenne Jackson stars as Chad, the guitar-playing, pelvis-swiveling, blue-suede-shoe-wearing roustabout who arrives to shake up a mid-America town that's so buttoned up it forbids public necking, interracial dating, and loud music. Various romantic entanglements arise among Chad, grease-monkey/tomboy Natalie (Jenn Gambatese), her father (Jonathan Hadary), her friend Lorraine (Nikki M. James) and her mother (Sharon Wilkins), her best buddy (Mark Price), the mayor (Alix Korey), and the sexy new museum caretaker (Leah Hocking). The rest of the plot? Well, that's pretty much it, as the characters mostly run around trying to figure out who they're in love with, fitting in excuses to sing such Elvis hits as "Jailhouse Rock," "Can't Help Falling in Love," and "Don't Be Cruel." Jackson won the lead shortly after arriving on Broadway by way of Seattle community theater, then took a role in the movie of United 93. --David Horiuchi

3 out of 5 stars Elvis Does Broadway Well.......2007-01-05

The music in this show is great. They didn't hire some Elvis impersonator to come and do this show. These are Elvis songs that have been reinvented in a musical theater style, and they sound great. That being said, just from listening to this CD you get very little about the actual plot of the musical. After reading the synopsis you can listen and understand what is going on, but just popping this CD in without glancing at the production notes will lead you to musical theater Elvis songs. I really enjoyed the music on this CD. Some of the voices need a little work, but overall my toe was tapping and my head was bopping. Good for new musical fans, as well as musical collectors. Probably not good for Elvis purists. Favorite song: "Teddy Bear/Hound Dog"

1 out of 5 stars We're left not right, and Elvis Presley Is Gone .......2006-08-09

If you like songs recorded and performed by Elvis Presley, this Compact Disc may not be to your music liking.
Despite the #1 HIT record title, there is no song by Elvis Presley. There are no images/pictures of Elvis Presley.
In minimized text on the back of the CD there is:
"Inspired by and featuring the songs of Elvis Presley."
The CD is fom SONY and BMG 2005 issue, RCA who released the title song is not mentioned. Also, there seems to be no 33/1/3
12" vinyl record album for this title. The music industry has created something out of nothing. I started enjoying Elvis Presley in October 1957 "Jailhouse Rock", and it still does, but this ALL SHOOK UP seems bogus, without songs by Elvis Presley.
>The cartoon cover is cute, but Elvis Presley is missing.
For Elvis Presley singing his #1 hits, there are none on this CD.

4 out of 5 stars Fun.......2006-03-01

Once I saw that this musical was had a soundtrack cd, I just had to have it!! I saw this play on broadway in NYC and fell in love with it even though I didn't know any Elvis music. This is such a fun soundtrack and keeps you singing and dancing along.

5 out of 5 stars A Rollicking Good Time.......2005-12-08

Over the summer I got to experience the Broadway show All Shook Up and it was highly enjoyable. Because critics don't like shows that are based off unoriginal music, they missed the point of All Shook Up. It was a fantastic tribute to one of the greatest singers of all time.

The cast of the show puts every ounce of energy behind the songs and fills them with such zest and pep that it is impossible not to see the charm. Some of the best numbers come when the cast all join in together in such ensemble efforts like "Heartbreak Hotel" and "Can't Help Falling in Love" to produce rousing chorus numbers. The voice talent matches expectations for the songs, as Cheyenne Jackson nails a good mix of Elvis with roustabout charisma in his spotlight songs like "Roustabout" and "C'Mon Everybody."

What the show does a fantastic job of is mixing up the songs, how they are song, and the different voice talent put into each piece. There is a wonderful cross of "Teddy Bear" and "Hound Dog" (words are changed around to make it work), that is fun back and forth song.

The same can be said for "Don't Be Cruel", which is one of the best adaptations of Elvis' songs. It mixes cool, slick, and humor to give another quick duet, back and forth piece to the show.

In short, there are so many fun songs on this CD that you won't be able to stop listening to it for weeks. There is so much charm and energy in each song that you'll feel a little remorse for not seeing it on Broadway (yes, it's run is over), or for not going to go see it again.

So...C'mon everybody and clap your hands right now...

5 out of 5 stars LOVE IT!!!.......2005-09-27

I bought this after seeing only a commercial for it. I absolutely LOVE Elvis Presley, and I absolutely LOVE broadway...so this is a perfect combination! The songs are all high energy, and the harmonies are perfect. I haven't seen the actual show, but the first chance I get I will see it. The talent in this show is so amazing. The songs are great. It's just a beautiful musical.

5 out of 5 stars This is the REAL Grease........2007-01-08

Grease, here in its original form, is an adventurous, raw, rowdy, INSIGHTFUL show that paints a very accurate picture of a pivotal moment in American history when rock and roll was giving birth to the Sexual Revolution. Grease is not a silly, brainless 50s parody, but is instead a smart, insightful, alternative piece of theatre (inspired in many ways by HAIR), with real muscle, attitude, rawness, and a thrilling, subversive, over-sexed energy. If you want to hear what Grease SHOULD sound like, if you want to hear the real sound of early rock and roll, get this original 1972 recording. Forget the awful revival, and forget the movie (as fun as it may be) -- THIS is Grease. [...]

5 out of 5 stars Love it!.......2006-12-30

We have been trying to get our drama teacher to let us do Grease for years (way before I even went to the school) and this year she's finally letting us.

I've always been a fan of Grease whenever it would come on TV I'd watch it and sing to the songs and I always wanted to be Sandy. But, by listening to the soundtrack I've changed my mind into trying out for Marty because "Freddy, My Love" is, in my opinion, the best song on the soundtrack, the only problem, it's an alto song and I'm a soprano.

Anyway, enough about my life, let's talk about the album. As I said before I've always been a Grease fan, but this version has made me love it even more. This original version is way better than the movie version, the songs seem to fall into place better than in the movie (because they were written for the play of course). Actually, the songs NOT in the movie are the best songs in the play, other than "Freddy, My Love" there are "Mooning" sung by Roger and Jan at a picnic, "Raining on Prom Night" (replaced by "Hoplessly Devoted to You" in the play, Sandy sings this song in her room instead of going to the dance as she did in the movie), "Alone at a Drive-in Movie" (replaced by "Sandy" in the movie, basically, it says the same thing as "Sandy" does), and "All Choked Up" (replaced by "You're the One That I Want", I'm kinda glad it was replaced because I like "You're the One That I Want" better).

I hope this helped you, it probably didn't because of all the personal anecdotes I had to put in there. Anyway, what I'm trying to say is that it's a good album and worth buying if you're a Grease fan.

5 out of 5 stars Grease, Grit and Parody.......2006-11-18

At some point in the early 1970's, nostaglia for the 1950's started running out of control. At a time when America was dealing with many social changes, somehow the decade of the 1950's became yearned after for
fun, innocence, rock and roll, and postwar prosperity. The realty being it was a decade that also included
economic issues, open descrimination, and very tame music (the name "the quiet generation" was there for a reason).

Grease came to life as a parody of the 1950's nostaglia craze, and it painted a truer, grittier portrait of the late 50's at an urban high school. The movie that came out in 1978, and the Broadway revival of the 90's whitewashed the story, and cleaned up the language so much the original Broadway musical got lost in the shuffle.

The great score is lead by Adrienne Barbaue, Barry Bostwick, and Carol Demas, and a number of songs never made it to the film, including Those Magic Changes, and Freddy My Love. Yes, in the 1950's there still was a draft!. Adrienne's character of Rizzo steals the show with her numbers, Look At Me I'm Sandra Dee, and There Are Worse Things I Could Do, finally the "Bad Girl" is allowed to be human. Summer Nights, It's Raining On Prom Night, and Rock N Roll Party Queen speak to the teenager that remains in all of us.

Enjoy this very real trip into the late 1950's

Ken

5 out of 5 stars Greased Lightning has struck.......2006-09-06

GREASE what a classic. I'm listening to it right now! I recently saw the play and they did the song you're the one that i want instead of all chocked up witch replaces that and in the movie they use that song and so on but the only reason im not mentioning Sandy or Hoplessly Devoted is because those aren't n aturally ever in the play it was made for the movie. This soundtract is still great five stars to the cast writer and composer

5 out of 5 stars The original, stll the best!.......2006-07-22

I saw the original production of Grease and it was hysterical. It was originally intended as an affectionate parody of the 50's and was a laugh riot. Then Hollywood got a hold of it and turned it into the cotton candy, pop fluff that the world see's it as now, totally missing the point (and losing alot of the fun). The original cast led by Barry Bostwick, Adrienne Barbaue and Carol Demas, were a blast! Stick to this version if you like real parody, humorous and true to the 50's rock style.

As good as Pomus and Gordy were, they can't compare with the premier rock & roll songwriters of the pre-Beatles era: Jerry Leiber, Mike Stoller, Chuck Berry, and Percy Mayfield. The team of Leiber (the lyricist) and Stoller (the composer) created such enduring standards as "Kansas City," "Hound Dog," "Stand By Me," "Spanish Harlem," "Jailhouse Rock," and many more. Those songs and 33 more were assembled into a bookless Broadway musical called Smokey Joe's Cafe, which was nominated for eight Tony Awards. If this soundtrack album is any indication, the show was an abomination, an act of self-betrayal by Leiber and Stoller, who not only participated in putting the show together but also co-produced the album with Arif Mardin. Instead of remaining true to the songs' rock & roll roots, the soundtrack producers have allowed the obscure stage performers to commit Broadway's worst sins: excessive earnestness, undernourished rhythms, and bombastic over-singing. Everyone in the cast has a good singing voice, but no one has a distinctive musical personality. Michael Park's Presley parody on "Jailhouse Rock," B.J. Crosby's confusion of vocal power for vocal attitude on "Hound Dog," and Victor Trent Cook's syrupy version of "I (Who Have Nothing)" prove Broadway chorus dancers are no substitute for real rock & roll singers. --Geoffrey Himes

Smokey Joe's Cafe is an execellent Broadway play and the musical soundtrack is great listening. The songs of Leiber and Stoller bring back memories of the 50 and 60's. The songs are classics that last for all time.

I think this is a cd with great selection of good music. It has great musioc for solo and duo and even small and large group songs for competion. dance competions!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous.......2004-11-25

I'm in High School, and we've performed Smokey Joe's Cafe 3 times already as a One-Act Play. I have to say that this is just an amazing show! Not only are kids our age into it but the older people are grooving with us too!

People just go estatic when you perform memorable songs, like "Jailhouse Rock" and "Hound Dog". And it's always great to hear people humming or singing to themselves "Poison Ivy" and "Kansas City".

These are classic and timeless songs that will never pass out of existence.

5 out of 5 stars Buddy Will Not Fade Away.......2002-05-21

I'm not sure who played Buddy when this CD was recorded, but he did a fantastic job. I just recently caught the show when it stopped in Charleston, WV on May 19th. WOW! It was awesome. Erik Hayden's performance as Holly was like no other. It far surpassed Paul Hipp and even Gary Busey (No disrespect to Gary...he did a tremendous as well). The songs on this CD aren't as good as Hayden's, but they are still great and I recommened this CD to Holly fans. If you have a chance to see the show, PLEASE don't pass it up. You don't know what you would be missing!!! The show takes you back to the 50's. You feel like you are really there, witnessing the Surf Ballroom concert on February 2, 1959. It's very moving. Check it out!

If you like the original style of Rock and Roll then you'll love this show (and cd). It's the best thing since sliced bread, or was it before that? Just kidding...Anyway, it's a must have for the music and musical lover. The show takes Buddy on his journey from a country singer in Texas to a singing style that's all his. The performers a fabulous and of course who can go wrong with the Music of Buddy Holly.

5 out of 5 stars hoople at the BBC .......2005-11-27

mott the hoople fronted by the great ian hunter the cork-screwed hair genius this is a cracking live session from the BBC vaults a true golden mine of an album with the hoople at their punkiest sleaziest and rockiest best damn they had great songs and a great singer ian hunter one of the best and he was inducted into the classic rock hall as one of the greatest songwriters
oh yeah baby "we're not bleeding we're feeding you but you're too f******* slow" a classic nasty yet great line from the mouth of the hunter
and whoever the presenter is they make me laugh at how stupid and dorky the radio used to be.using all the buzz words of the time and sounding idiotic well that was the times and mott the hoople rock the dust with the punks which would soon be sweeping the globe

      5 out of 5 stars Hoople Excellence.......2003-06-15

This cd is essential for those who want a glimpse of the early Hoople. This cd contains an alternate version recorded for the BBC of Thunderbuck Ram by Mick Ralphs a song that rocks with a vengeance. Mick shows off his skills as both a vocalist and song writer as well as showing his considerable chops as a guitar slinger. If you like your songs primal and full of bite this song is a must. The other studio trax include another Ralphs essential in Whiskey Women, and Darkness Darkness. Ralphs shines throughout as does Verden Allen on organ and the underrated backbone of the band Overend Watts. Ian Hunter provides the perfect foil for Mick Ralphs on his epic song the Journey, complete with the Hunter mystical imagery and wordsmithing and his take on the Dylan/the Stones street smart rockarama The Original Mixed up Kid as well as Let Death Be your Santa Claus. The CD has an excellent CD booklet which details more of the Hoople history and a detailed account of Hoople's BBC exploits. This is an essential Disc for any true Hoople fanatic as it showcases the talents of all the band members. Pick this up if you are lucky enough to find it, and enjoy!!

5 out of 5 stars Great live Mott the Hoople CD.......2000-08-21

This CD shows the power of Mott the Hoople live! This CD has most of "Brain Capers", one of the best heavy metal albums of the early 70's, played live. I am an Ian Hunter fan, but Mick Ralphs is terrific on this CD, makes me sorry he left the band when he did! Well worth the money for any Mott fan.

4 out of 5 stars Johnny Cash Fan.......2005-12-05

Just bought this CD. I have one other Cash CD. This is a CD of his years at Sun Recording Studios. One can hear his love for gospel music in Belshazzar. That classic boom-chick-a-boom Cash sound as very pervilant in this cd. His man was a great story teller. My favorite songs are Cry, Cry, Cry & Folsum Prison Blues. "I Love You Because" features Jerry Lee Lewis on piano. That's cool.

4 out of 5 stars Strong collection at a low price.......2002-02-23

This album offers 16 songs from Johnny Cash's years at Sun Records. The sound quality is excellent and the liner notes informative and interesting. The cover artwork is spot on and captures the era of the recordings in a nice way. What makes this album different to many other Cash 'Greatest Hits' collections is the inclusion of songs such as 'Belshazzar' and the outtake of 'I Love You Because', featuring Jerry Lee Lewis On Piano. All in all, considering the low price tag, this collection offers good value for money.
