4 out of 5 stars Will has done it again!.......2006-04-10

Will Young, the first UK Pop Idol winner, has gone from strenght to strength!!! After a rather disapointing debut album he came back with his second taking the UK charts by storm again and again then vanishing!!!! But now, 2 years later, he is back and this latest album is fantastic! Full of great pop tunes and great love songs, this is a great album to have playing around the house to relax or work to. As expected there are some fab lyrics and some reministant of his last albums best song 'Leave right now' which are worth checking out. Highlights include the unashamedly poppy 'Switch it on' which is great to dance and sing along to, and the heart rending 'All time love' a fanstasticly simple and understated ballad that we can all relate to at some point in our lives..... "Sometimes you pass by the good ones, cos you're trying too hard, too hard to see them" Tust me, GIVE THIS ALBUM A CHANCE, you wont regret it!

5 out of 5 stars Best Album.......2006-02-20

This album is the best album ever! There are loads of really cool tracks like surfer babe and saturday nite just to name a few. Personally, I think everyone should get it, not only because it is a great album, but because McFly are such a talented band.

4 out of 5 stars In the mold of BUSTED !.......2005-09-08

This popped up as a Amazon Recommends - and I'm glad I picked it up. More original, fun, POP music. Perfect to pop in the dash and rip around country roads. Even the tracks that copy (or are copied by) other compatriate groups (such as Busted) - so far anyway - each of the groups has their own sound and cover version that changes the song considerably. This is much better than the typical American Idol POP Crap releases.

5 out of 5 stars McFly:- Room On The 3rd Floor.......2005-08-22

Look, McFly really aren't that bad. They write their own songs, and play their own music, and to be quite honest with you, they're very talented. Their lyrics are good, because you can actually relate to them. They talk about teens problems in life and the ups and downs of love, which I really respect them for. They've also been a great success in the UK: they've released six singles so far; four of them have climbed to #1, and sure the other two were also hits, and this album also got #1. Their new album Wonderland is also tipped to hit the #1 spot. They've also won their first BRIT award (best pop act - deservedly so), and bagged up an impressive five awards at this years' Smash Hits poll awards, earlier this year, including Danny - sexiest male!

FIVE COLOURS IN HER HAIR
The first single from the album. Reached #1 in the UK and stayed there for two weeks. In the Japanese charts, Five Colours reached #2! This is an awesome song, and should really be remembered as a great track. It is also their signature track, and should not be missed! (Not that anyone hasn't heard it already!!)

OBVIOUSLY
Second single released from the album, reached #1 in the UK, stayed at the top for a week. This is another brill effort from the lads, and I strongly recommend you check it out!

ROOM ON THE 3RD FLOOR
The title track is the fourth and final single from the album, and reached #5 in the UK. This is one of the very few songs on the album that is not about getting a girl, having a girl, or wanting a girl. One of the best on the album.

THAT GIRL
Third single from the album; #2 in UK. This is one of my faves on the album, definately top three. The song is really catchy, the lyrics are quite good, singing is topper, overall excellent song. The guitar solo (by Danny, I believe) is particularly enjoyable.

HYPNOTISED
This is nothing new: McFly fall in love, and then their g/f gives them a heave-ho. HOWEVER, this song is another catchy effort, and Tom's vocals are particularly great. Another stand-out track on the album, but then again, I have many.

SATURDAY NIGHT
Awesome. There's not much needs to be said about this song, apart from: the singing is great, so are the guitar solos, and the lyrics are rediculously, stupidly and un-intelligently great.

MET THIS GIRL
Another song that would be in my top three. This song is SOOOOOOOOOO catchy, I love it, and I don't really have anything else to say about it. The break-down in the middle is the best part!

SHE LEFT ME
If any of you lads out there have just been dumped by your g/f's, this song isn't actually going to help. However, it's one that you'd find at a smoochy, old school disco, and I love it. Probably the slowest song on the album.

DOWN BY THE LAKE
This song is very, very, very, very good, but if I had to choose a weakest song, this would get it! It's about a girl they like, and the girl likes them, but the girls' dad doesn't like McFly, and they make out down by the lake, and the girls' dad sees them...

UNSAID THINGS
This song was my fave song on the album, but due to songs like Five Colours, That Girl and Met This Girl, which I've been listening to alot more lately, it isn't my fave anymore! A girl used to go out with McFly when they were young, now she's married and has a "baaa-aaa-aaa-by" (yes, I said it right!).

SURFER BABE
Another brill song. It's catchy and great!

NOT ALONE
This is the second ballad on the album, the other being She Left Me. This song is one of the best on the album, and was written by Danny. He wrote it when he was 16, two years before McFly released Five Colours. Great!

BROCCOLI
This song is really weird, but it rocks! It's about a girl who was meant to be coming round for tea, and McFly cook for her, and then she doesn't come round anymore. Awwww, bless! Anyway, this song is also humurous, with lyrics like, "SHE DOESN'T KNOW THAT I'M A VIRGIN IN THE KITCHEN COZ IT'S NORMALLY MY MUM!" Great closure! This album also includes a hidden track, called Get Over You, and it's a pain to play. Rewind your player when Five Colours In Her Hair starts, and stop at about -1:55. This song also rules!

Since this album, McFly have released another two singles; both of which got the top spot. All About You was the first, which was recorded for Comic Relief, It stayed at the top for one week. The other is I'll Be OK, their new song, which charted at #1 last night! (Yes, you heard me correct - McFly knocked James Blunt off the top!!) Their new album Wonderland (hence my pen-name) is out on the 29th August - for god sake, buy it. Danny, Dougie, Tom and Harry make up the best pop band on the planet - and I literally mean it!

5 out of 5 stars Pretty good!.......2005-06-28

Look Mcfly and Busted may not have the best singing or writing but you must give them credit for writing their own songs and playing instruments. Also at least these two bands have influences and are original. They aren't trying to be punk or goth like Simple Plan or Good Charlotte. They just like to be themselves. I'm sick of everyone saying "Oh if you want real music listen to Good Charlotte." Well I'll tell you what makes this band and Busted rock is that when they play live it sounds good. Sure Good Charlotte may sound great on the cd but on stage they really just suck. I don't call screaming singing. At least when McFly sing live they sound remotely close to their recordings. I think it's good that they don't feel that they have to electronically change their voices to sound better. Also their songs aren't about how much life sucks and everyone is "holding them back" or about drugs or how celebrities have it soooooo bad. They are writing about stuff they actually know about and it's fun stuff not too serious. Their songs are just plain fun to listen to. Give 'em a chance.

5 out of 5 stars Best UK band .......2005-06-16

When I was traveling through London, I met these guys and really had never heard of them, but totally fell for their music.... if you like SUM 41 then you would love these guys... they have the best voices and are totally amazing artists... I am really recommending them to anyone... check them out... they really rock

5 out of 5 stars Ronson's classic solo debut.......2006-02-09

Slaughter On Tenth Avenue (1974.) The first Mick Ronson solo studio album.

INTRODUCTION:
In the early seventies, the glam rock movement swept across Europe. Among the British artists who made it big in this classic rock age was David Bowie. David Bowie's success was due in great part to the classic 1972 Ziggy Stardust album. That album featured some of the most amazing classic rock guitar playing of all time - thanks to an up-and-coming guitar genius named Mick Ronson. When David Bowie disbanded the Spiders From Mars (his touring band from the Ziggy Stardust era), Ronson went solo. Unfortunately, his career as a solo artist never saw success anywhere near that of the man he once served as a backing musician for. Ronson's first solo album, Slaughter On Tenth Avenue, was recorded in late 1973 and released the following year. Read on, and see how the first solo effort from the ex-Spider measures up!

OVERVIEW:
Mick Ronson released his first solo album, Slaughter On Tenth Avenue, on RCA Records on March 1, 1974. Trevor Bolder, Aynsley Dunbar (later of Journey) and Mike Garson were among the backing musicians used on the album. Ronson himself produced the record. The album tracklist consists of Love Me Tender, Growing Up And I'm Fine, Only After Dark, Music Is Lethal, I'm The One, Pleasure Man/Hey Ma Get Pa, and Slaughter On Tenth Avenue.

REVIEW:
It really is disappointing just how underrated a guy Mick Ronson is. He recorded many excellent albums, both solo albums and albums with other artists, and was unfortunate enough to die at the age of forty-six. But in his fairly short lifetime, Ronson created some of the finest rock and roll the world had ever known. The few people who discover his work (mostly fans of the old Bowie stuff who want to see what he sounded like after) will not deny that it is excellent, and I'm no different. Ronson's first solo outing definitely sounds like Ziggy-era Bowie. Ronson even mimics Bowie's singing style in many places on the record. Now, let's take a look at the tracks that comprise Ronson's solo debut.

-SIDE A-

-Love Me Tender: Starting off the album is a cover of the old tune made famous by Elvis Presley. Ronson's take on the song keeps it true to the original, but he adds his own glam rock spin onto it - he obviously wanted to show off his guitar skills, and does just that. This was an excellent way to start the album.

-Growing Up And I'm Fine: Here we have a melodic, fast-paced piano piece. David Bowie wrote this song, and with Ronson mimicking Bowie's singing style, this could easily be mistaken for a David Bowie performance. The song definitely helps to show of Ronson's musical diversity. Another excellent song.

-Only After Dark: This was Ronson's biggest hit as a solo artist, and appropriately so, since it rules. The song is a hard, mid-paced glam rocker with a catchy beat and memorable lyrics. From start to finish, this one will grab your attention and keep a hold of it all the way through. A Ronson masterpiece more than worthy of its lofty status.

-Music Is Lethal: For this song, the pace and the intensity are slowed down dramatically. This an extremely slow and melodic tune, with some orchestral-style backing instrumentation. As the song progresses, though, Mick begins implementing more and more of his own musical elements into the mix. The end result is another solid addition to the album.

-SIDE B-

-I'm The One: For the most part, this is another one of those slower tunes. But it's got that certain glam rock vibe to it only Ronson could pull off. With its unique stylings from start to finish, this is one song on the album that is truly and uniquely Ronson's own.

-Pleasure Man/Hey Ma Get Pa: As the title of this song may have implied, it is actually a medley of two songs. Pleasure Man is one of those slow-mid paced glam rockers with heavy piano usage. Not surprisingly, Ronson throws his guitar playing into the mix, as well. Hey Ma Get Pa, the latter half of the medley, is the only song ever written by both Bowie and Ronson. This short-lived half of the song is irregular but excellent, featuring heavy electronic instrumentation, and a unique vocal style that sticks with you long after you're done listening to the song. This is a solid medley.

-Slaughter On Tenth Avenue: The title track finishing off the album is a cover of the old Gershwin instrumental favorite. And Mick Ronson takes the classical favorite and makes it sound better than ever. Ronson's classic glam rock sound is awesome here, sounding as good as it ever would. If there's one piece that shows just how talented and how diverse of a guitarist Ronson is, this is the one your looking for. And that, my friends, is how to end an album on a high note.

OVERALL:
Overall, Mick Ronson's first solo album was a glam rock masterpiece! I simply can't believe how underrated this is. I once read that this was "one of the lost albums of the seventies," and after giving it a listen, it's not at all hard to see where that train of thought came from. If you're a fan of David Bowie and you're eager to see where the guitar genius went after that classic period, or maybe you're just looking for some of the finest glam rock money can buy, this album is for you. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

EDITION NOTES:
Although this album has been out of print for many years, it was recently, at long last, reissued. The reissued version features expanded liner notes, excellently remastered sound, as well as four hard-to-find bonus tracks! This new issue of the album is the definitive version on compact disc. It's tough to come by, but if you want to hear it, get it by any means necessary.

5 out of 5 stars 4 and a half stars.......2005-07-06

I have listened to this album as much as any Bowie album. It is compulsively listenable. "Only After Dark" and "Growing up and I'm Fine" are the best and most Bowie-like tracks. An instrumental section from the title track sounds eerily similar to an early track by the French band Air, making me believe they must know this album well. His version of "Love me tender" grew on me too. If you like early-70s Bowie you really do need this. I haven't heard the bonus tracks.

3 out of 5 stars An important footnote to Aladdin Sane.......2004-08-23

Mick Ronson was Bowie's lead guitarist during his first (and some would say, best) phase. I was never clear about what the relationship was between the two -- from Bowie putting his arm around Ronson on 'Starman' for Top of the Pops to the oral string-plucking of his guitar in concert. But after 'Aladdin Sane', Ronson had left the Bowie line-up. And Bowie's next -- 'Diamond Dogs' -- is generally viewed as much weaker than its predecessors.

'Slaughter on 10th Avenue' was Ronson's first solo album, arriving at some point after 'Aladdin Sane'. A study mate at the time bought the album, and even then, the LP wasn't on his turntable too often. The album is a collection of reasonably attractive songs, and you can immediately hear in Ronson's tone why he was provided such suitable backing vocals for Bowie. And like Bowie's 'Pin Ups' of about the same period, there are some covers: 'Love Me Tender' and 'Slaughter on 10th Avenue'. Unfortunately this re-issue by Snapper contains no songwriting credits (very naughty -- let's hope the lawyers don't find out about that), or indeed any information about who plays what.

The cover art is pretty much as I remember the LP, and there is a 500-word retrospective on Ronson, who died of cancer in 1993. If you're a Bowie completist, you have to have this album, because Bowie is certainly in the mix on some tunes, singing if not also writing.

5 out of 5 stars Sheer class.......2003-11-13

Back in the seventies, I learned the hard way that you never lend out your Jack albums. While I will never see some of that vinyl again, I welcome the chance to catch up on that and more with the hopefully ever-increasing CD back catalog.

There was something almost mystical about Jack's earlier recordings, and if I had to pick out one album that I would consider my favorite, it would be There's Love... which gave us the Jack anthem And I Love Her.

I know we're all going to disagree over his 'best' work, but with an artist of his caliber, you can only really talk about your favorite albums - another classic being Sings Michel Legrand.

Last I heard the man is still going strong, and still doing sold-out world tours, and from the last recent photo I saw, he's still outrageously handsome, dang it.

A superb double Jack set and from the look of Amazon's excellent database, one of several paired sets. Now I just have to catch up on the rest.

Brilliant.

5 out of 5 stars A WONDERFUL "TWO-FER" BY JACK JONES!.......2002-08-15

This coupling of two of Jack's best albums offers the music lover immeasurable nostalgia, enjoyment and collectability all in one great CD. The first half of this CD latches on to the (then) recent bossa-nova craze and takes a handful of standards and lets Jack 'bossa-nova' his way through them. It's inspiring the way the arrangements sound so tailor made to old chestnuts like THE LAMP IS LOW, the underappreciated Hoagy Carmichael-penned torch song I GET ALONG WITHOUT YOU VERY WELL and the recent broadway hits of the 60's SHE LOVES ME and ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE TRACKS. But the real beauty here is the second half of this CD, the album THERE'S LOVE AND THERE'S LOVE, the charts contributed by Nelson Riddle (the only time he and Jack had the opportunity to work together) Nelson's work with Jack is much like any other work he's done with any other singer - flawless. A Riddle chart always got the best out of the singer, and this is more than evident as Nels and Jack put their indelible stamp on the Beatles' classic ballad, AND I LOVE HER. Other geniune treasures to be found are the old Al Jolson standard, YOU MADE ME LOVE YOU and the lilting WHILE WE'RE YOUNG. You'll find the title track with its lyric from the able hands of Sammy Cahn, THERE'S LOVE AND THERE'S LOVE a cute tune that may border on commercial, but it never comes off that way with Jack's tender reading and Nelson's thoughful chart behind him. A really wonderful "two-fer" to have in your collection!

5 out of 5 stars Incredible Singing!.......2000-04-28

These two Jack Jones albums on the Kapp label from the mid '60's are long overdue on cd! The first album "She Loves Me" features songs with a latin beat, done superbly by Jones. The second album "There's Love & There's Love & There's Love" is a classic, which features the only time that Jack collaborated with the great legendary arranger Nelson Riddle. The songs are sung beautifully and smoothly by Jones, and the arrangements are incredibly lush. The album is an absolute classic. This cd is a must have for any Jack Jones fan and fan of the great popular standards!

5 out of 5 stars Incredible Singing!.......2000-04-27

These two albums by Jack Jones from the mid '60's are a perfect example of what makes Jack Jones so great! "She Loves Me" features songs with a latin beat, done superbly by Jones. "There's Love & There's Love & There's Love" is a classic album featuring the only time that Jack collaborated with the great and legendary arranger Nelson Riddle. The songs are romantic and lush, the singing is silky smooth and top notch. The arrangements are unbelieveable. This cd is a definite must have for any Jack Jones fan!

5 out of 5 stars Two Master Disks from a Vocal Master on 1 CD: Big Deal!.......1999-10-28

Incredible but MCA United Kingdom has done a better work on Jack Jones' Kapp originals than MCA America has. An entire album with arrangements by Nelson Riddle would be enough to enchant our hearts. So imagine one more excellent album in the same CD package.

5 out of 5 stars Reminds me of college days.......2007-07-06

I was in college in the early 80's when this was big, and it is just as fun to hear now.

I had no problems playing the CD and importing it into my itunes. I never tried playing it directly on the PC. This is pricey, but well worth it!!

2 out of 5 stars Great CD, but this import doesn't play on most cd players.......2007-02-21

So out of the 6 cd players in my home, 4 are various ages and 1 being a MAC and 1 also being a PC, this complitaion only plays on 1 of them. So I can say that the music is great! But i can't really access it. Just look on that larger image of the cover and its clearly written: does not play on PC or MAC. I didn't see that. I also have purchased other import cds in the past and have had no problems. So i can't get it on my ipod nor other cd players and i'm a little annoyed, because i was so excited to find this stuff on cd. I have the stars on II LP.

2 out of 5 stars If You're a Fan of TIme Life CD Commericals, This is the CD for You.......2007-01-21

This is a collection of snippets of hit songs redone with a disco beat. These are not the original artists, but fair imitators. But Just when I get into one song, it changes into another one. It reminded me of watching Time Life "Best of" CD commercials. I"ll admit to watching the commericals for a few minutes, but then I switch the channel. That's pretty much how I felt after listening to this for a few minutes...time to listen to something else.

5 out of 5 stars Exceptionally well done! Well worth $25.99.......2005-06-13

(1)
In the one week that I've owned this CD, I've played it both at several water aerobics classes and at a party at my home (yesterday). In both cases people's reaction was astonishment at how authentic the imitations are:

(1.1)
More than one person said, "I can't tell the difference [between this song and the original]!." Then the next song would come on, and they'd be astonished that it was ALSO performed by Stars- on-45. The "I-can't-tell-the-difference" group includes a former Classic Rock DJ.

(1.2)
A person who works on Talk Radio told me thought that I was adding different instrumentation to original voice tracks (the original vocals).

Nevertheless, If I actively listen for differences, and in a quiet environment (which is neither water aerobics nor a party), I am able to detect subtle difference between this CD's songs and the originals.

(2) This is an excellent CD for water aerobics both due to the distinct, 120 BPM (beats per minute) beat and the mix of songs from the '40s through the 80s.

(3) More people have asked me how to buy this CD (not just requested that I play it) than any other CD that ever played for water aerobics classes, and I've been doing so for over three years, during which time I've played (songs from) over three hundred CDs.

(4)
I also own Jive Bunny's greatest hits and "DiscoBeatles." If this CD is an A+, then Jive Bunny's is about a B- , and "DiscoBeatles." is an F.

(5)
I plan to give copies of this CD as Christmas presents.

5 out of 5 stars A Mighty Fine Record.......2007-05-24

This is a colourfully eclectic album that really showcases Frida's extraordinary vocals. It bursts out of the speakers with 'Tell Me It's Over': a short punchy rock song which gets straight to the point before lilting into the sublime 'I See Red' with it's dub overtones. 'To Turn The Stone' has aged but it is still an epic (and evidently must be good, since Donna Summer subsequently decided to record it after initially turning it down). There's nothing new to say about 'I Know There's Something Going On' - a fantastic song with a killer vocal delivery. The question only remains as to why this stalled at #43 in the UK. 'Threnody' and 'The Way You Do' are in turns beautifully wistful and playful songs and there aren't the words to describe her cover of 'You Know What I Mean'. It is celestial. The highlight, after IKTSGO, though has to be 'Baby Don't You Cry No More' with its light lounge blues. Perfectly pitched though mischievous.

There are not many singers who could carry this off. Frida does it with aplomb. An essential purchase.

4 out of 5 stars Gotta love Frida!.......2006-06-03

I am not going to compare this album with ABBA or Agnetha. What's the use? After (and before!) ABBA, both women made music quite different from the famous ABBA sound. I personally like Frida's voice and solo work over Agnetha's, but that's just my opinion. As for this album, it's nice, but not her best. Some of the songs I really love (I Know There's Something Going On, Threnody, The Way You Do)), but some I don't particularly enjoy (I Got Something, Here We'll Stay). But in all, it's a great document of the early '80 pop-sound. Frida's voice to me was, and still is, one of the finest in pop music!

5 out of 5 stars No second fiddle!.......2005-09-08

Frida has always been my favorite voice in ABBA. Could any voice sound as rich as she does in ABBA's "Knowing Me, Knowing You?"
There is not a single dud on this entire cd. She and producer Phil Collins picked from the hottest songwriters of the day. The Brian Ferry penned-song "The Way You Do" is flawless, as is the haunting, atmospheric "To Turn The Stone." Other highlights are the rocking "Tell Me It's Over" and folk-tinged "Threnody."
As far as the remaster goes, the sound quality is excellent. The bonus tracks in no way add to the total package. I never really cared for the solo version of "Here We'll Stay," the duet with Phil Collins on the original cd. It seems unpolished. The newly included radio/single edit of "I Know There's Something Going On" proves that there is nothing like the original. Some things are better left alone! I LOVE THIS SONG!I did hear an incredible dance remix of this classic track while at a club in London in 2004. It was approximately 10 minutes long and played up the guitars but had a super-fast computerized beat. Where is this version? It should have been included instead of the edit. Also, no review would be complete without mentioning the excellent jazz-influenced "Baby Don"t You Cry No More" and the touching ballad "You Know What I Mean."

I can honestly say that overall, this cd is slightly better than some ABBA cds, the exceptions being "Super Trouper," "The Album," and "Voulez-Vous," of course- all perfect. Buy this cd and enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars A Great Remaster.......2005-06-04

This is a great remaster of her first post-ABBA album. The first thing I noticed about it was they didn't use the same version of 'Here We'll Stay', it's been slightly remixed from the original album version, but a great version none-the-less. The 'Solo' version of 'Here We'll Stay' sounds more like a demo than a single version...I think I read somewhere that it was released as a single...yuck! But I digress. The remaster is top notch and should not be overlooked. The single edit of 'I Know There's Something Going On' sounds ok, but you can tell it was transferred from digital to analog and back again for this remaster.
This is a great album and worth the cost just to get that 'extra' track of Frida singing solo on 'Here We'll Stay' for all Frida fans.

5 out of 5 stars The Quo Should Have Made It Here.......2006-03-09

With ON THE LEVEL, Status Quo's fourth great CD in a row, it becomes even more shocking that these guys couldn't crack the U.S. market. It's hard to see why, especially since songs such as "Down, Down" and "Nightride" have a sound that would have been huge in this country if there hadn't been a glut of such bands here. The band members' belief that the young Australian tourist jailed in Indonesia since last spring on drug-smuggling charges was unjustly convicted makes this CD an essential purchase for both your ears AND your conscience.

5 out of 5 stars The Quo--Great 70's CD.......2005-05-15

Why these guys never made it big in the U.S., I'll never know...This album is proof positive that the Quo can rock as hard as anybody you care to name. Down Down, Little Lady, and their blistering cover of Chuck Berry's Bye Bye Johnny will melt your speakers!! Nice sonic upgrade from what I am sure were not the greatest tapes to begin with...This is the last of the "raw power" Quo discs; after a muddy live album they brought in outside producers and tried to smooth off the edges in a bid to be accepted into (U.S.?) more mainstream markets...I highly recommend this CD as well as Blue For You, Hello, Quo, and Piledriver if you want more of this...For a more detailed account of this group, see my blog at ulice.blogspot.com.....

5 out of 5 stars Wow, I never thought I'd see this one again!.......2007-06-03

I also was first exposed to this group in the early to mid 80s on MTV. Then a boyfriend at the time owned the LP and made a copy for me on cassette (I know, bad us) which I no longer have. I played it to death back then and have tried to find it several times with no luck.

My husband, who loves 50s music, also loves this CD. The only thing I don't love?? THE PRICE. I think this was the most expensive single disk I've ever bought. But I bought it anyway, so there you go. I'm glad I have it.

5 out of 5 stars Once again, the Japanese reissue a pop classic.......2005-02-08

It seems that if it were not for the Japanese we would not have CD reissues of some of my favorite pop music of all time. This was one of my favorite "not a bad cut on the whole thing" albums of the early '80s, but I owned it only on LP and have not been able to find it in any other form for two decades. I'm so delighted to be able to get a copy of it now. (Actually, my US version of the LP was missing the title track...I wonder who made the decision not to include it! Duh!) Back before Brian Setzer invented swing music in 1997 (yes, that WAS a joke) and all the bands like Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Squirrel Nut Zippers and the like came along, these guys were already making music to jitterbug to. Had they not had the "Stand By" video on MTV, though, I might never have heard of them. Lucky I took a chance on this album and loved it. Unfortunately it was not time yet for a revival of this kind of music and I seemed to be the only one listening. I was extremely disappointed with their followup album, in which the group was stripped of all its "swing" sound and homogenized to sound exactly like Wham!, possibly with the idea in mind that if they sounded like Wham! they too would have hit records. (And it wasn't difficult given that Steve Lambert sings just like George Michael.) End result: their uniqueness was gone. And they broke up soon after, I believe. If you enjoyed any of the swing music revival of the late '90s, get this!

4 out of 5 stars U.K. Does the 50s.......2005-01-15

Roman Holliday was a sample of the UKs "New Pop" retro-direction in the alleged post-punk 80s (I never was a fan of punk, but accept that there's room for everybody). I first saw them on MTv in their "Stand By" video. Being a US child of the 50s, I took to them, bought the cassette for my Walkman and enjoyed the escape.

However, I won't be laying out the salty bucks for the CD reissues of "Cooking On The Roof" or "Fire Me Up". Unfortunately and inexplicably, 2 prime cuts included on the cassette and b-side 45s, "Beat My Time" and "Round & Round", do not appear on the CD (weren't on the vinyl album either, but still....).

What is it with these record industry compilers, always excluding a quintessential cut on any given so-called "quintessential" anthology? :( And this, the CD bonus cut era!!! I've settled for near mint copies of both vinyl albums plus the aforesaid 45 b-sides which I got off ebaY.

5 out of 5 stars A long-lost gem from the '80s.......2004-04-24

It's pretty amazing to finally get Roman Holliday's debut album on CD. The original cassette kept me entertained for years until the thing wore out. Roman Holliday's music -- brassy, joyous and energetic -- helped provide the soundtrack for my high school years. Highlighted by the warm voice of charismatic lead singer Steve Lambert, the group created a killer debut, fueled by the singles "Don't Try To Stop It" and "Stand By." But the rest of the disc is remarkably consistent, including the pseudo ballad "Serious Situation" and the delightful "Midnight Bus." This stuff predated the swing revival by years, but is more energetic and original than almost anything to come out of that scene.

Roman Holliday completely changed their sound (no more swing) and image (no more sailor hats) for their second and final album, "Fire Me Up." Still, it's a fine disc -- hopefully that will be coming out on CD some time soon.

5 out of 5 stars Finally- a lost gem out on CD!.......2004-03-11

I am really glad to see this classic lost 80s debut album on CD, finally. Too bad it is such a pricey import. One of the first bands signed to Jive (back when it was a British New Wave label, something the current label seems determined to forget), Roman Holiday was discovered by Boy George and toured with Culture Club around the UK.
However, the band does not sound like Culture Club, rather they mix New Wave attitudes with Swing (back before Swing came back). And to top it off, they had a batch of killer tunes, tight vocal harmonies and a fun, shiny brass section that kept the music upbeat and happy.
Standout tracks include "IOU," "Motormania" "Stand By" and the "big" hit here in the US - "Don't Try to Stop It." The band manages to mixes a bunch of styles, from 50s doo-wop to UK New Romantic disoc, it was just too bad that most of those styles were passé in the early 80s.
This album is a little gem and will please those who enjoy good pop music with a beat. The songs are shiny, bright and while close inspections of the lyrics reveal the band were no Pollyanna, it will lift your spirits and set your toes a tapping. Come discover a truly lost treasure from the 80s.

if you are a die hard Deep Purple fan like some reviewers below and of course like me too! you will love this pearl collection songs of deep purple. The 4 discs are 24 bit remastered songs, some of the unreleased livesongs like stormbringer, wild dogs, lazy, fireball, Highway star are never issued on any cd format before.
Once again, the pearl collection songs are dedicated to "die hard and long time deep purple fans". If you arent! perhaps you know the only one song of DP such as Smoke on the water! then please keep away your fingers from this, because you won?t surely like them all. On the other hand, the most die hard DP fans would like the whole set for sure.
PS: do not forget to see the pretty photos of band members as sleeve in the boxset. You will love it!

much better LIVE SHOW than Stones or beatles!
yes they're rocking more & are louder than Stones or beatles ever did on stage. The boxset has 32 songs as pearl or pots of gold. The line up from the band Mark II, III and IV songs are included in this exclusive set. You will be satisfied with the songs. I quarantee ya all!

3 out of 5 stars Unusual collection of live Deep Purple.......2002-11-20

The liner notes say that this collection is "the story of Deep Purple on the road"...and so it is.Rather than a live greatest hits, this collection attempts to show DP in it's various incarnations(1968-1993), warts and all. Actually, the warts were few for me.The biggest complaint of mine is the apparently random sequencing and selections(just what the heck were they thinking?).This box set would've been better served had The Deep Purple Appreciation Society(who put this set together)taken less control of the packaging. The selection follows no rhyme or reason.Oh well.
Just in case you think these tracks are familiar versions, think again. Most are extended versions with nuances particular to the specific stage show performed at that time."DEEP PURPLE ON THE ROAD" serves as an excellent overview.
Another lesser complaint is the overall length of each cd. Average time= 60 minutes per cd (more or less).
But, all things considered, this is a solid collection with excellent sound. This box also contains a copious amount of liner notes worthy of a small book in itself.
