    3 out of 5 stars Not a great effort........2003-05-08

This cd is spotty at best. All in all, a wise-acre approach, with lots of emphasis on silliness and goofiness. Sounds like they threw this one together, which is a shame, as these guys can really play - they get the 3 stars for musicianship. Gave Poised in Hate 5 stars, that's the one to go for!

this is really great rockabilly straight from the land it was born. i was skeptical after hearing some of this bands previous work-but this album was a pleasant suprise. it has a lot of different styles, but theyre always true to form. the album starts with -major trouble (from ursa minor)- a song about, what else, aliens zoomin' past uranis (your anus?) and moves on to a suprisingly loungy -sideways glance-. from there is my favorite song on the album, a sweet rockabilly/country song -badman- where our singer croons,"shes as happy as she can be with a bad man like me." that song along with -western springs- are great ballady type songs, but there are some great almost psychobilly sounding songs here too. -stampede- will really get your foot tapping and you can almost smell the cows! then theres -kill krazy- in which the narrator kills his girlfriend ("maybe it was the way she cooked...she couldnt cook to save her own life") and mr knuckles funeral march. by far the best song, when it comes to a good old fashion rockabilly standard, is -i have drunk all my troubles away- complete with gulps in the bridge. i enjoyed this album a lot, these guys have the touch and they covered all bases with seeming ease.

    5 out of 5 stars A Rebel Rouser!.......2002-02-08

This collection does a good job of capturing James Dean's reckless and devil-may-care attitude toward life. Of course, it includes such obvious tributes like David Essex's "Rock On", Jan & Dean's "Dead's Man Curve" and The Shangri-La's "Leader of the Pack." But it also includes tributes to Dean's era, like Chuck Berry's "No Particular Place to Go" and Beach Boys' "Shut Down."

An interesting idea that Dean would appreciate. So rock on, James Dean!

    5 out of 5 stars Rock On!.......2002-02-01

James Dean, who died tragically in 1955 before the movie "Rebel Without a Cause" was released, was an inspiration to many rock'n'roll songwriters. This compilation pays the actor a tribute, beginning with the timeless rocker "Rock On" by David Essex and ending with "A Young Man is Gone," a relatively unknown though haunting song sung by the Beach Boys. The sound quality is excellent on all the songs. Personally, I love all the songs, but don't like the order, so I "program" this one. I also wish there were more songs included like "Rebel Rebel" by David Bowie, but, hey, you gotta live with that, put on your rockin' shoes and rock on!

I'm a big fan of T.F.S. but I have to give this 3 stars. The album doesn't capture their sound. The songs are great but it just doesn't have the same power that comes across live.

Better to get "Undead at the Black Cat Lounge" (you might even hear me clapping) or "Something in Japanese".

Oh yeah, I know this is out of print, but you would be completely insane to buy this for $80.00!!! Try lowering the price closer to $20!

If you are able to get your hands on this disc, I highly reccomend you do so. The Flametrick Subs are without a doubt one the the greatest rockabilly groups of all time. After the first track I was hooked. If you love rockn roll with a twist of Johny Cash, you need this album.
P.S. if you own a primered El Camino and you like cruisin for chicks in the trailer park.....chicks dig flametricks!

The original Matchbox album on Magnet Records with songs like 'Rockabilly Rebel' and 'Buzz Buzz A Diddle It' was just called 'Matchbox'. It wasn't called 'Rockabilly Rebel' as many people seem to think.
This is recorded sometime later. 'Rockabilly Rebel' is a different recording of their best-known hit, and it's excellent. The rest of the tracks are great too - especially the cover of 'Drivin' Wheel'.

You can now buy the original on CD reference Raucous Records
Ref RAUCD 081. Happy listening. I was an original groupie of Matchbox in the late seventies, Graham Fenton attended my wedding and was nearly my brother in law. Buy it, I might as I no longer have the vinyl.

      1 out of 5 stars What a ...!!.......2001-09-09

I bought this cd hoping to listen again the fabulous album issued by Magnet Records many years ago. But I only found seven songs and only the title track is the only link to that old long play. Maybe one day I will find the original cd...maybe!

1 out of 5 stars Actually, NO stars for this CD.......2000-06-18

I guess one star is the worst rating I'm allowed to give it. But it deserves NO stars, and here's why: Anyone who fondly remembers Matchbox's high-powered "Rockabilly Rebel" album on vinyl from 20 years ago will be disappointed to learn this CD is not the same item. I sent it back with the shrink-wrap still on it when I saw the songs listed on the back. Only the title track remains from the original release. Maybe it's the version I know, maybe it's a rerecorded version -- it doesn't matter. The original record had 12 tracks; this CD has seven, including "Radar Love" (which I assume is the Golden Earring classic). I don't care how good this CD may be, I don't understand why it's called "Rockabilly Rebel" by a band called Matchbox when it clearly isn't the same collection of songs released under that title 20 years ago. Besides, who wants to pay import prices for seven songs? I suggest you pass on this one and hope, as I do, that some company will gain the rights to issue the real deal before we're too old to rock. (By the way, the good folks at Amazon are blameless for this situation. My ire is directed at the record company that put this thing out in the first place.)

Original 1960s instruments like the 1962 Guild Starfire 3 guitar, 1962 Fender Jazzmaster, 1967 Fender Coronado Bass and GMS drums make this sound like it was recorded in another era. If you love Surf music you have to own this disc. Don't believe us? Check out the samples and you'll become a believer!

      5 out of 5 stars A must have CD!!.......2005-08-22

WOW!! This is a must have classic!! I highly recommend it to any/everyone!! It's easily one of my new favorite CD's of all time!

      2 out of 5 stars Why??.......2004-06-08

The question is WHY? Why did Ralph Rebel record this? Why did I buy this? Was it morbid curiosity, temporary insanity, or my love for surf music. Anyway you look at it, this cd falls short. Ralph Rebel is a competent guitartist but here he is messing with all that is sacred, good and holy and the results are lack-lustre at best. The only 2 tracks worth the trouble here are the two tunes writen by Ralph Rebel himself. He doesn't do justice to the original versions of the other stuff here. And he doesn't put a harder edge on them either. E.g. like Gary Hoey and Dick Dale did to "Wipeout" in the "Endless Summer II" movie. Believe me, I've been into surf music since the early days and I've heard the BEST! This ain't it! It sounds downright...well, amaturish, empty and all wrong. No b*lls at all. (...)

5 out of 5 stars Ralph Rebel is Mr. Surf Guitar!.......2001-12-20

Move over Dick Dale - Ralph Rebel is the new reigning King of Surf Guitar! The sound on this album is very authentic - Rebel is the real deal. I just let this CD play for hours in my car when I drive. Take me to the beach with that smokin' guitar and hot reverb. Defintely worth the 15 clams!

      3 out of 5 stars Reality Check!!.......2004-06-10

Not a bad neo-rockabilly cd but far from the legendary "destined-to-be-a-cult-album" blurb some would have you believe. Ralph Rebel is a more than competent rockabilly guitarist and a good singer, but his stuff still stands in the shadows of The Belmont Playboys and The Hillbilly Hellcats. This cd is a lot better than his "Rockin' and Surfin'" one and also his "Big Town Boogie". His version of "16 Chicks" here is sounding better now than on the first playing but The Shakin' Pyramids do the best cover of this tune on their "Skin 'Em Up" album. Rebel's original songs are pretty good and this is the best of his (so far) three discs, although I don't think I'll be buying any more.

Wow! This CD knocked me on my (...) right from the first song. "Rockabilly Vampire" cam blasting from the speakers and pumped me.
