Product Description
Judy's shift from folk to rock really took hold with this band she formed in the early '70s with her husband at the time, Jerry Yester. Inventive orchestration, strong songwrting and the kind of sophisticated vocal arrangements you'd expect from a guy with Yester's resume (Modern Folk Quartet, Association) make this a real hidden gem of the era, but its commercial potential was sabotaged by Henske and Yester's break-up--and hence, the band's--immediately following its release (Rosebud keyboardist/vocalist Craig Doerge is today married to Henske).

4 out of 5 stars Gorgeous CD.......2003-09-16

I actually haven't taken this CD out of the player since I got it. In my humble opinion. Hyperion is the classiest label going; in fact, I'll buy Hyperion CDs even without being familiar with the singers, because I trust the producers. I saw this CD classified in the folk section at the library--but I knew better. Marie McLaughlin is a real singer, not a folk singer, and she does justice to these beautiful songs. I'd rather hear a classically trained singer sing folk songs than a folk singer sing anything.

3 out of 5 stars a disappointment from Hyperion.......2001-06-21

I do not wish to be too harsh on this album...there is nothing glaringly wrong with it. My main quibble is with the title: "Songs of Scotland." These songs may well be "from" Scotland...but they are not "of Scotland."

The music on "Songs of Scotland" is great--as long as you are looking for very English, semi-operatic readings of these Scottish songs.

Mrs. McLaughlin (an opera singer) sings beautifully; but in the style she is most accustomed too. Mr. Martineau certainly knows his way around a piano and as with Mrs. McLaughlin's singing, I find no fault in his playing here.

My quibble, which may well be minor to some...was that I expected much more "Scottish" sounding renditions of these songs; in this regard, I was disappointed.

This disc is OK in and of itself...recommendable even...but consider yourself warned. Now you know what you'll be getting.

5 out of 5 stars Great music, superb recording, and a couple of added treats.......2005-06-11

I treasured several of these Gerhardt/NPO film score releases on cassette as a film-fan teen, and this CD is no different. Gerhardt's interpretations of these selections (with Herrmann present at the sessions) are stunning, true to the original compositions, with all the passion and grandeur that they deserve without having to conform to a) screen timing, and b) the limitations of monaural optical film soundtrack methods of the time. As another reviewer pointed out, Herrmann is known for his great Hitchcock film scores, but his other work was no less marvelous. (Typical example, his score for THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL, making exceptional use of piano, deep bass brass and the unusual but appropriate Theremin.)

An intriguing footnote.... For CITIZEN KANE's portrayal of Susan Alexander's disastrous opera debut, Herrmann needed a grand opera excerpt that could convey the pandemonium, confusion, and Wagnerian excess of an opera, and showcase the soprano as having a legitimate voice, but one incapable of matching a smothering orchestra arrangement. No such selection from grand opera sufficed, so Herrmann composed his own. His fictitious SALAMMBO recitative and aria astutely illustrate in abstract, subtextual musical syntax the anguish that Alexander felt participating in Kane's delusion that she would be a great opera star. In fact, the libretto is derived from Racine's "Phedre," in which the heroine begs her lover to kill her and release her from shame. For the film, the light lyric soprano Herrmann used was appropriately overwhelmed by the thunderous arrangement. For this June, 1974, recording, a truly capable, genuine opera star (a then up-and-coming pro named Kiri Te Kanawa ... yes you read that correctly, Dame Kiri Te Kanawa) was recruited. She matches the orchestra, and you can hear SALAMMBO as it was written by Herrman. It's the jewel of this recording.

Finally, that these Gerhardt/NPO recordings are available on CD with Dolby Surround encoding is NO gimmick. (This info is missing from the Product Details, but the large cover image indicates the encoding.) These analog recordings sound FABULOUS with a receiver in Dolby Surround, Pro Logic, or Pro Logic II Music decoding. (I don't recommend you use "movie" settings, as the music isn't really meant to be channeled to Left, Right, and Center.) In straight stereo, or Surround, you can hear Herrman's music as clear as if you were in the concert hall. This CD is a must-have for Herrmann fans, and home theatre aficionados.

5 out of 5 stars An essential recording.......2000-10-11

This CD is an essential addition to any film score collection. It's the best recording in the RCA "Classic Film Scores" series conducted by the late Charles Gerhardt; unlike many of the other entries in the series, this disc favors substantial, extended suites over brief snippets. Bernard Herrmann personally selected the works to be included; he was also present (and played a significant role) at the recording sessions.

Gerhardt's readings of excerpts from "Citizen Kane" are flawless and have never been surpassed; the performance of the "Salammbo" aria (by then-little-known soprano Kiri Te Kanawa) is dazzling. "Beneath the Twelve-Mile Reef" and "White Witch Doctor," two forgotten Fox films from 1953, are represented by suites replete with brilliant coloristic effects, including the bizarre and disturbing sounds of the serpent in "White Witch Doctor," and the bold and evocative use of nine (!) harps to illustrate underwater scenes in "Beneath the Twelve-Mile Reef." Pianist Joaquin Achucarro's performance of the intense "Concerto Macabre" from "Hangover Square" (1945) makes a convincing case for this work as an independent piece of concert music, and the brief but ferocious "Death Hunt" from the 1951 film noir "On Dangerous Ground" is a perfect curtain-raiser.

Herrmann is mainly known for his collaborations with Alfred Hitchcock, but if you only know his scores for "Hitch," you're missing an entirely different side to Herrmann. This disc provides an ideal cross-section of his wildly creative approach to more traditional Hollywood films; it's also one of the best film music anthologies ever recorded. Buy this; you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars the joy of beauty.......2001-04-08

"The meadows are clothed with flocks And the valleys are covered with grain; They shout for joy, yes, they sing." (Psalm 65:13)

In all of my days spent on this journey up until now, I have never heard more beautiful music than that of Carol Thompson's Harp playing. It echoes with the music of the Celtic landscape as well as the hearts of the Celtic people from whom many of these songs descend. It is a wonder.

The Bible speaks of the boy David playing his harp to soothe the wrath of King Saul. If David's playing was anything like Thompson's playing of this music...I can see how something like that might work.

From the opening strains of Bonny Portmore to the last note of O'Carolan's Farewell, Thompson's CD "The Faerie Isles" is filled with the utter joy of beauty. It is no secret that Dorian is my favorite label...I have yet to be disappointed by one of their discs--but this one is exceptional indeed.

I give "The Faerie Isles" my highest recommendation.

5 out of 5 stars Lush and lovely music from the past.......2000-01-20

Perhaps some day Dorian Recordings will turn out a poor CD, but among their more recent releases are four sets that feature harpist Carol Thompson. The artist was born in this country of Anglo-Welsh-Irish background (as the copywriter tells us). Part of her technique is to let her ornamentation come out of the melody rather than merely appending it, and to execute her chords with a "downward roll" rather than an upward as in classical harp playing.

So with Amazon.com's permission, I will submit this same write up to each of the four webpages that deal with these albums.

. (DOR-90013) has Ms. Thompson accompanied by another harpist and a wooden flute; and the extra coloration is welcome. Here we have 18 cuts (64 minutes) of Celtic harp music, the more familiar of which are "Brian Boru's March" and "Gentle Annie." The notes are of a general nature.

The subtitle of (DOR-90120) shows the program (53 minutes) to be much like the other sets, including the familiar "All Through the Night" and "The Ash Grove." I spot even one or two selections among the 19 here that appeared on earlier recordings. But it is all so winningly played that one must not carp. The notes are in several languages and a bit shorter than usual to keep the booklet from being too thick.

(DOR-90176) has 71 minutes consisting of 21 cuts such as "She Moves Through the Fair" and "Snow on the Hills." This set tends to be more satisfactory than the last one because of the presence of accordion, concertina, wooden flute and second harp; although by now one tune is starting to blur into the other.

The fourth Dorian set in order of recording is (DOR-90240) in which our harpist goes it alone with a short program (51 minutes) of 12 cuts, half of which are medleys. Included are "Twisting of the Rope," "Blind Mary" and the title song. This time the notes give information about each song.

Again I must emphasize the excellence of the playing and how beautiful each CD is by itself. But as with so many artists that concentrate on a small part of the music spectrum, each new offering tends to be predictable and one gets a strong feeling of déjà vu. But to be fair, these sets were released with considerable time between them and only people like reviewers now and then get to hear them all at once.

So which to choose? I would go for the two where you get more than the sound of a single harp first. But I really think that enthusiasts of British music will want to have all of these sets sooner or later.

And keep an eye open for the fifth entry in this series: (DOR-90273) that is not yet available at the time of this writing.

5 out of 5 stars 5 Stars because you can't give ten.......2006-04-13

I usually don't even care for Celtic music, but this CD is one of my favorites out of all my CDs. I have lots of jazz, classical, and pop music, and almost no desire for folk music, but when I heard this I was transported. This album, and the album Timeless Jewish Songs (Shirim La'ad) by Martha Rock Birnbaum, mezzo soprano and Barbara Dechario, harp, are my two favorites of the whole collection on my shelf. Harp is the most ethereal instrument, and in the hands of a virtuoso, the harp *IS* heaven itself.

5 out of 5 stars possibly the best disc I own.......2002-03-09

Many times in the past I have written of and reviewed the works of my favorite singers (Dougie MacLean and Rich Mullins). Indeed, they are great singers. Yet they have not captured the title of my favorite musician.

If someone were to ask me who I think the best musician for your money is (people might be lining up to do so somewhere, but if they are, I am not aware of it)--I would, without a pause or a doubt, say that it is Carol Thompson.

There is no music out there to compare with Mrs. Thompson's stuff. Nothing comes close to its beauty or its vision. "Carolan's Welcome" is an outstanding example of her skill and power as an artist.

I challenge you to find music this steeped in beauty. You will not. With its haunting title track and songs such as "Black Rosebud" and "She Moves Through the Fair," this disc is almost impossible to top.

I may be biased (I picked up my copy of the disc on my honeymoon), but I would even say there is a case to be made for "Carolan's Welcome" being Thompson's best disc.

"Carolan's Welcome" is one of the great jewels in my music collection. Few others have received as much play time on my stereo. Get this disc. I cannot urge you strongly enough. It is well worth the cost.

I give "Carolan's Welcome" my highest recommendation

I bought this in high school when I was in Paris. For the past ten years, I've been enjoying it, and now it's ripped onto my iPod. I love their unique folk/pop/techno hybrid style. I'd say if you're a fan of Luscious Jackson, you would enjoy Katerine even if you don't speak francais.

5 out of 5 stars Katerine delivers French pop at its finest!.......2000-07-31

Mes Mauvaises Frequentations is truly a work of art. French indie star Katerine has delivered 16 sugar-coated tracks that sparkle with retro-chic. Fans of Kahimi Karie (for whom he often writes songs) and Pizzicato Five will love this album. Katerine's strong song-writing is coupled with lush orchestrations of flutes, horns and violins. Furthermore, those who understand French will love his witty writing. Standouts include Mon Coeur Balance, Le Plus Beau Jour De Ma Vie and Parlez-Vous Anglai Mr. Katerine. The third of these that I have mentioned is especially interesting because he duets with Erin Moran who will be releasing her own debut album late 2000 under the name A Girl Called Eddy. All in all, I was very impressed with this album. Any fan of French pop, Shibuya-kei or good music will find much to love in this album.

5 out of 5 stars After Farewell Aldebaran, what next??.......2007-03-24

Well, Rosebud, actually. Husband and wife team at the time, Judy Henske and Jerry Yester had already defied all genres and categories with the stunning Farewell Aldebaran (see my review). Rosebud (the name of the band and a nod to the oddness of Orson Wells, I assume) is far more into the country rock area, although there is not an ounce of yeehaw in it: if there is any admixture to be spotted, it is a cross between Gram Parsons, The Eagles, The Beatles and something else - the often rather spooky otherwordly atmosphere that Judy cooks up with her words and Yester with his arrangements. The musicianship is absolutely first class, and even features Buddy Emmons, which is worth the price of admission alone. And as with Aldebaran, the world-weary but unusual vocal harmonies and lead lines give the whole thing an ethereal effect, pretentious as that may sound. Best to concentate on three songs, perhaps, to give an idea of what you can expect, but as a final general point, the bass lines are also very rewarding, for example, in Reno using the major seventh on the dominant in the chorus to give real strength to the vocal line, and to add tension. Where do I start? With Western Wisconsin. This song is about the stark contrast between a rural childhood spent playing in streams and mucking about as country kids, "1,000 miles from the sea", and the current married state in a glass and concrete city at the forefront of modern life on the coast. And of course, the storyteller fell in love with his play friend cousin Nancy in those idyllic days as she in turn "fell in love with the carnival cowboy". When you reach the line "Oh how my heart, is aching for Nancy", even the most stony faced among you will find a tear forming. Yes, I know that it all sounds very hokey and corny, but it isn't. Rocked gently along by a crystal-clear lead vocal from Jerry Yester (I think - if it's one of the other two, sorry!) and lovely harmonies from all three, Jerry, Judy and Chris Dodge (and I think Craig Doerge), it works. The arrangement is very Yester-ish, spare, sad and of course beautifully executed. Reno is another of those strange songs where Judy's hand is seen in the words and I have already touched on the arrangement - again, a sort-of country song but 500 miles from the then standard "I left Mary at the edge of town" type of thing, as is "WW" above. Edgy and spare, again this features cracking lead vocals from Judy and a bravura performnace from the whole band on everything. The Yum Yum Man is more typically West Coast country rock with the stunning Buddy Emmons guesting notably on pedal steel. And so on. What stands out is that this is the sound of a real band in action, not Judy and her team (I gather that Judy was backing away from the biz at the time). Jerry Yester's arrangements are, as always, extraordinary and often quite chilling, I don't know why: Craig Doerge is a great, great keyboard player as is Chris Dodge, Judy is just Judy, but a little more back in the mix and part of the band, and if you know anything at all about the quality West Coast sound you will know that there is a plethora of top playing and arranging. Like Aldebaran, this music cannot and will not be forced into any category. Not country, not rock, it remains unique - and very lovely.

4 out of 5 stars "Western Wisconsin" the anthem for many.......2004-07-23

I admit to a serendipitous resonance with "WW", lyrically, but it is a beautiful, melodic, plaintive tune that manages to stop this side of sentimentality. "Lorelei", "Soleil", "Lulabye II", are other tunes which are also pleasing. The band itself is accomplished, tight, and manages to depart, in a positive way, from the folk-rock conventions of the 60s/70s. This is a good effort, and I was pleasantly surprised to see it being released on CD; my vinyl copy is a bit worse for wear.

5 out of 5 stars A refreshing new jazz albumn.......2003-07-31

If you're a fan of Peter Eldridge, make sure to pick up a copy of Sranger in town; you won't be dissapointed! If you've never experienced Peter's soothing voice , then you're in for a real treat. This CD is done very tastefully, and it includes jazz giants such as Lewis Nash, David Finck, and Andy Ezrin. I first heard of Peter Eldridge when I saw him accompany Jane Monheit on her DVD, Live at the Rainbow Room. Along with Jane Monheit, Peter Eldridge is one of the most exciting new talents to emerge. Also, look for Peter on his New York Voices albumns.

5 out of 5 stars Emerging Jazz Star.......2001-10-29

Peter Eldridge's debut jazz outing is one one the most refreshing and inviting discs to emerge from the vocal jazz world in a very long time.Eldridge's ecnomical style and impeccable phrasing are put to good use on these thoughtful arrangements of Rodgers and Hart,Jobim,Dameron, and more. Also a great use of an all star cast of the jazz elite including Michael Brecker, Claudio Roditti and Lewis Nash.I can't wait to see what is in store for jazz lovers next with this young vocal giant.--Lee Wurtsal The Jazz Advocate

5 out of 5 stars Exactly what I was looking for!.......2001-10-27

I highly recommend this CD! I am always looking for new artists to add to my collection, and this CD will get a lot of play. I'm sure it's only a matter of time before Peter Eldridge is a household name.
