Customer Reviews:
Solid attempt, but doesn't capture intensity of perfromance.......2005-03-11
I've seen Kites perform several times over the past few months, each time I expect to be let down, even a little, but that never happens. I always enjoy his performances, they're intense, soothing and visceral.
Similarly, I was expecting to be let down by this recording; I didn't think it would be possible to capture the spirit of Kites performances, much less capture the warm, textured blanket of sound that envelopes you when you see him live, with any degree of fidelity. This album does fail to capture his live experience, but it's still a solid release nonetheless. The production is done rather well, and you get a pretty clear idea of what Kites is doing. Kites could have taken greater advantage with using the recording format to better give the listener the impression of being in the room with him, but that doesn't make this any less of a good first album with a lot of good potential.
As the previous reviewer suggested, this is a good album for those just getting into noise, there are a couple of tracks of jingly-jangly folksy experimentation interspersed with the more straight-up noise-synth tracks.
10 years after.......2003-12-11
(I own the vinyl, I do not know if the cd is different) About ten years ago I would have loved this album, it would have been one of my favorites. After a decade of Merzbow, Massona, White House, Tom Smith, etc. it doesn't shock, insult, rock or have any moments available to me. After spending three years getting my mfa at an art school, i feel I know this guy and he's the same boring guy as me. If you are new to noise, then you'll probably find this really exciting. I would rate this lower to better reflect my been there done that affectation, but when I listen to it I think how I would have felt.
