5 out of 5 stars excellent follow--up........2004-07-05

As you may know, most follow-up albums suck. This is mainly do to the fact that the main surprise that makes the artist so special has already been exposed, so when the second disc comes out it, the artist has nothing new to offer. Or they have taken there music in such a radicly different or over-produced direction, that it doesn't even sound like that artist. Well this CD is different. Even though Kimbrough keeps the sound that you're probably familiar with, he still has some new tricks up his sleave, like kenny brown's slide playing. It even has a verson of "Crawlin' Kingsnake" on it! This is the kind of album that makes you realize that I'm not crazy to like blues.

5 out of 5 stars ...M-I-CROOKED LETTER-CROOKED LETTER-MOJO..........2001-10-18

...THIS IS THAT ALBUM! YOU WANNA GET DRUNK AND REMINISCE ABOUT A LONG LOST LOVE, FUSS ABOUT HOW YOUR OLD LADY IS DOIN YOU WRONG, FLIRT WITH THAT NEW GIRL WORKIN DOWN AT THE DOLLAR STORE OR GET UP AND GO GET BACK WHATEVER IT WAS THAT WAS TAKEN FROM YOU...THEN THIS IS THAT ALBUM TO GET YOU IN THE MOOD FOR ALLA THAT!
THIS MAN IS SERIOUSLY SLEPT ON, BUT MR. KIMBROUGH HAS BROKEN THRU TO MY TOP 5 OF FAVORITE ARTISTS...JUST BEHIND ARETHA FRANKLIN, ISAAC HAYES, THE O'JAYS AND OUTKAST!
THIS MAN IS PURE AND HIS CARRYIN' ONS WILL GET YOU CLOSER TO YOURSELF AS HE REACHES IN AND PULLS YOUR SOUL OUT!

5 out of 5 stars Trance-Boogie Transcendence.......2001-10-12

I saw Junior open for Iggy Pop in about 1996. He sat in his chair, unmoving, for 45 minutes and played what seemed like one single, endless song. When he finished, I couldn't remember how he'd began, but I knew I'd been taken someplace far, far away, and I was sad to be back. This album conjures that same feeling for me. The word "groove" has been poisoned by association with post-hippie jam-band idiocy, but Junior's music grooves. It will move you in ways you didn't think possible. It will burn tracks into your brainpan and it will never leave once it's in you. Yes, you've lived this long without this album, but once you hear it you'll wonder how that could have been possible. Junior Kimbrough changed my life. Let him change yours.

5 out of 5 stars Soul Blues, Indeed.......2000-07-25

Half mountain holler, half strangled cry, Junior Kimbrough's was a music in which the elementary components dripped with something deeper. He didn't just restore the hypnotic ramble and hum of classic north Mississippi blues, he gave it a steroid shot with his slow-boiling style and his wide groove. This is a far cry from the shred-manic, soul-deprived garbage which is being passed off as the blues most of the time today. And it's as close to the core of humanness as contemporary blues will ever get without yanking Robert Johnson or Fred McDowell up out of their graves, fitting them with electric guitars, and urging them to let it loose right there with the elder upstart.

5 out of 5 stars Transcendent. Junior Kimbrough is a monster........1999-03-22

I don't listen to Junior Kimbrough's music as often as I might but when I do, I binge. And Sad Days Lonely Nights is the one I start playing when I do. No one can get his tone. He was a stunning artist, one of the great under-recognized bluesmen of our time.

3 out of 5 stars Good but not Great.......2005-08-14

The album is quite good, the musicians talented, but I have heard the same music on other CD's played a bit better. However I love any civil war music and will listen to this CD many times

5 out of 5 stars The Best.......2003-02-22

This is probably the best and most authentic renditions of music from the era of the Civil War that you will ever hear. Forget the country music versions, if you want to hear the songs the way they would have sounded this is it. I cannot say enough about this album. For the true belivers.

5 out of 5 stars Moving traditional music.......2004-02-05

Music of the period performed in the style of the period and with great feeling. Don't be afraid that the music is "stuffy" or academic. It is funny, sad, and rousing. It gives the feeling of immediacy that never goes out of style.

5 out of 5 stars Splendid program, beautifully done!.......2002-06-01

A splendid program of varied, contrasting pieces for voice and
instruments. All performers are complete masters of this music
and its idiomatic performance style, and they execute it with skill, wit and (where appropriate) real depth of feeling.

This is an album which everyone who loves Civil War music,
or who is meeting it here for the first time, will cherish.

5 out of 5 stars Attention Hardcore Reenactors.......2000-09-14

I am a campaign-style Union reenactor in the Eastern US who has emphasized Civil War-era music in my knowledge base. I was also a musician for several years. DC Hall's New Concert ensemble has done a first-rate job of recreating our Northern ancestors' music. From my reading, their efforts have approximated the small, live music groups that were popular before and during the War. The liner notes are well-written, and historically accurate. Perfect for background music when having your pards over to count threads or make up rounds. I recommend it without hesitation.

5 out of 5 stars This is always going to be one of my favorites!.......1999-05-08

D.C. Hall's NC&QB is a wonderful small ensemble that really adds new light to the Civil War genre. At times, it is so tender in feeling (The Picture on the Wall)and then rowdy in spirit (The Year of Jubilo). The familiar Star Spangled Banner is done in a wonderful unique rythme. Dennis O'Neill is a wonderfully sensitive, intelligent singer--a tenor who varies his tone and delivery for each character. He also sings the music as written, with every dynamic shading in place. Yes, he manages high B-flats pianissimo without resorting to falsetto, and he also rises somewhat heroically to heavier moments. But there's a rub. The loud, high notes are a bit nasty--a slight wobble comes into the voice and a sense of strain is more than noticeable. His exquisite, piano beginning of "O paradiso" ("Oh land of dreams") from L'Africaine is only a sad memory when you hear the vaguely bawled high notes throughout. His "Reve" from Manon is lovely in its sustained peacefulness, and while he's very exciting in the big Act II duet from Ballo (with soprano Susan Bullock as a fine Amelia), there are always those unfortunate "big" notes to reckon with. Perhaps that's why the gorgeous Pearl Fishers duet, with baritone Anthony Michaels-Moore, ends the program so successfully. The soft notes are more prominent than the troublesome forte ones. Perhaps this is being too picky--O'Neill is a worthy singer, he makes these arias and scenes palatable in translation (even Alvaro's music from Forza is believable), and artistry like this is a pleasure to come across. --Robert Levine

5 out of 5 stars Historical Time Capsule.......2000-08-12

This is the most comprehensive recording I've found of songs popular during the Civil War period. The performances are a time capsule of Civil War music.

5 out of 5 stars ROBERT E. LEE COMES TO LIFE!.......2001-01-02

Jimerson has created a recording that gives the listener a wonderful sampling of the music Robert E. Lee would have heard during his lifetime, in a true period style. As a regular visitor to Lee's birthplace, I am impressed by and enjoyed the results of Jimerson's historical research at the Robert E. Lee archives at Stratford Hall.

2 out of 5 stars Not real great.......2000-11-23

Aside from the competent performances of Douglas Jimerson and Jill Worley, the singers and musicians on this CD are rather poor. But the recording is worse - poor quality, and done in such a way as to emphasize defects in the presentation. Whenever David Calib comes in with the drums, everything else is drowned out. Did they put the mike _in_ the drum? Sounds like it. The best numbers were those with Jimerson soloing with only a piano backup. It was therefore very disappointing to hear "All Quiet Along the Potomac" as a trumpet/drum instrumental. All this is not to mention the quibble that the album's connection with Robert E. Lee is a bit strained. Aside from "How Firm a Foundation," most of the songs have very little to do with Lee aside from the fact that his family might conceivably have had the sheet music lying around the house, or they were popular during/after the wars he took part in. Be that as it may, I'm sorry to say that three-quarters of the CD is barely listenable.
