5 out of 5 stars Bill Kaulitz brings it in English too!.......2007-06-23

Tokio Hotel recorded some of their songs in English because they wanted to share their lyrics with others who might not know German... they wanted to be sure that the meaning of their songs was correctly translated. That is what this album is.

It's fantastic.

Anyone who thinks they do not like Tokio Hotel? If they hear Sacred or By Your Side is sure to be hooked

4 out of 5 stars different in english.......2007-06-17

its defiantly different hearing it in english. I enjoyed the CD but I absolutely love the German version of all of these songs! If you're a huge fan you should have this CD. For the people who have not hear of this band or songs by them give them a listen! They have so much talent and their music is really good for a rock band.

This rowdy, chant-along San Diego crew debuted in the majors as a lean but ravenously hungry '90s answer to Southside Johnny & the Ashbury Jukes. The skin-tight horns separate 'em from the pack while scalding riffs like "On A Rope," "Young Livers," and "Used" (sounding like a Born To Run hommage) make this a safe buy. "Punk is dead," they claim: and this slams home like a stake through the heart. Jeff Bateman

5 out of 5 stars The Band's Creative Peak.......2005-04-25

Rocket From The Crypt was really onto something here. The four records the band released prior to "Scream Dracula Scream!" are all fine records on their own, but looking back, one can tell that they were leading up to this. "Scream Dracula Scream!" finally captures a band coming into it's own and right at their creative peak. It's larger-than-life song structures and wall-of-sound production really makes an impact on the listener. It's hard to believe that a band like this even exists. I guess you could almost call this "their Pet Sounds" album, in that it features almost every instrument imanginable on it, playing over these fast and furious punk rock-n-roll songs. Their "Hot Charity" album they released after this one builds even more on everything just said here, and in many ways, is an even better record. It's too bad their creative peak left them shortly after, as none of their albums since have managed to make a similiar impact. In short: BUY THIS! It tips it's hat to everything good about music (punk, rock, soul) and then some.

3 out of 5 stars Did they think we wouldn't notice?.......2004-06-10

This album starts with 3 powerful, tight songs and descends into filler territory immediately after. The rest of the songs meander pointlessly as if the guys forgot what was going on and couldn't remember why they were holding guitars in their hands. I give it three stars: one for each of "Middle", "Born in '69", and "On a Rope". Those three songs make this record worth checking out, but don't have too-high expectations.

5 out of 5 stars rockin rocket.......2003-12-19

I saw Rocket from the Crypt when they were opening for Rancid as well, back in 96 I suppose it was, in a claustrophobic club in Harrisburg PA. Never heard of em before, but man did they open my ears. They ripped up the joint and blew Rancid's set out of last century. My buddies and I snatched up everything we could find by these guys afterwards. I was going through my fuzzy old tape collection recently, and found this great "Scream Dracula, Scream" and popped it in the stereo. Still rollin...

5 out of 5 stars These guys are incredible........1999-09-24

Rocket From the Crypt is an inredible musical talent. Certainly better than most so-called "alternative" rock. RFTC has got a truly original and catchy sound. This was their first album I heard by them, and I immediately fell for them. Rocket rox.

5 out of 5 stars Astounding CD.......1999-06-02

This is truly a great album. It gets better with every listening time. This is even better than the other albums (e.g. Circa Now or RFTC) althought they are very good too.

Album Description

Riot City Blues' is Primal Scream's follow-up album to the electro-tinged 'Evil Heat', although it could easily be compared in style and content to their 1994 masterpiece 'Give Out But Don't Give In'. Bluesy, punky swagger and New York Dolls-esque melodies abound, marking this album out as a more organic affair than Bobby Gillespie & Co's previous two albums. Includes the single 'Country Girl'.Recorded at London's Olympic Studios and produced by former Killing Joke bassist Youth. This offering from Bobby Gillespie and the boys, which includes the single 'Country Girl', features guest contributions from Will Sergeant (Echo & The Bunnymen), Warren Ellis (Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds) and Alison Mosshart (The Kills). Sony/BMG. 2006.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars There are no Blues in this Riot City.......2007-01-20

Ahh, Primal Scream. Back to rock music, and back to original band spelling.

Bobby Gillespie and his men are just like the mystery bag, you never know what type of album youll get next from them. They seems to bounce into different genres every album now from rock, to electro, to metal to dance etc...so...which one is this one?

Riot City Blues (album title is a slight giveaway) is just a strong, fullblooded rock n roll record. This aint a Primal first...(remember Screamadelica follow up Give Out, But Dont Give Up?) and i highly doubt it will be the last either. This nonsensical brash rock n roll should be on future Scream albums - and thank god for that

This is a solid album straight from the word go, wtih the hit singles Country Girl and Dolls giving a real insight into the album. Not to mention the bluesyness of Suicide Sally and Johnny Guitar..i think we know who that song may be dedicated to..

Elsewhere, the specials guets (Warren Ellis, Will Sergent, Alison Mosshart) all shine, imparticular Will on the strong, guitar heavy "When the Bomb Drops. Another album highly.

I close by saying..

This another top Primal Scream album. Thats all you need to know really. [...]

5 out of 5 stars great dumb rock.......2006-09-25

I have been looking forward to this one for a long time. I saw Primal Scream play a few years ago in San Francisco. It was an okay show. The audience was there to see Underworld. I ran into Bobby Gillespie at a show at the Hollywood Bowl. I guess he was in town mixing the record with Dave Sardy. This record is a back to basics. There are no electronics. No Stooges meet Krautrock. No mixes by Kevin Shields. The lineup of the band is a little different. It's a little raw and a little like Exile on Main Street. This is in evidence with the first single "Country Girl." This is country rock in high style. "Nitty Gritty" is more Stones influenced rock. One of the best songs is "Suicide Sally & Johnny Guitar." Roots rock meets hard rock. "We're Gonna Boogie" reminds me of The Kills. Alison Mosshart from the Kills sings on a few songs. "Dolls" is a real glam rock song. This is a pretty good record. It's a great mix of roots rock, Stones obsessions, and good old time rock and roll. There is no electronic weirdness and sound collages. This is a party album. It should go down well. Bobby Gillespie was sort of obscure a few years ago. But with the help of the Internet, he is like considered one of the coolest people ever.

4 out of 5 stars Great CD, Combining the Best Elelemts of the Group's Past Work.......2006-09-10

With tracks that range from country-esque to stompin' crankers, this CD is well worth the money. While the music is diverse, almost every track stands on its own.

A huge fan of "Sreamadelica" back in the day, I nearly gave up on the band after the "Vanishing Point" CD, and I viewed "EXTRMNTR" as a very uneven work (flashes of brilliance intermixed with headache-inducing nonsense). But if you liked "Give Out But Don't Give Up" (I love that CD), then you should be happy with this one. Again, very diverse stuff, but rock solid all aound.

4 out of 5 stars love the way this band never stands still..........2006-08-12

there's very few bands that can shift gears quite like Primal Scream. from Screamadelica to Give Out... to XTRMNTR, these guys are always changing their spots. Riot City Blues leans mostly towards Give Out...(minus the P-Funk influence) with its "Rocks Off" attitude, yet still has a sound all its own. Standout tracks: Suicide Sally, Little Death, 99th Floor and
the New York Dolls nod Sweet Rock n'Roll...

2 out of 5 stars From Progressive to Regressive........2006-08-05

This is far the worst album from english previously called progressive alt-rock band. The only two songs that matters here with some signs of their past work are When The Bomb Drops and Little Death. Everything else is a silly honky tonky rock'n roll that has not far from Country American Music.

4 out of 5 stars A schizzophrenic route to greatness.......2003-11-20

I couldnt think of any modern group with a more bizzare course in music than Primal Scream. A group that have elevated themselves to the electronic scenes darlings and at the same time a group with a tough political edge hard to find in any genre. At the same time, this is the same group that started off playing straight old rock n roll, shifted to a strange hybrid of alternative rock and then to "Screamadelica" only to explode to the masterful and classic "Vanishing Point" and "Xtrmntr".

Well, in that respect, this collection of their hits is extremely honest exactly because it displays the twisted course this group has followed.
While I'm personally not a rabid fan of their earlier work, I find their latest offerings truly awesome (with the exception of the rather raw "Evil heat"). Consequently the latter half of the 1st CD is intimidating and justifies those who claim that Primal Scream are one of the most innovative and provoking groups around today.
In the limited edition CD you get a remixes package as well. Inevitably, and as is usual with the remix editions this is a so-so proposition: some of the remixes are undeniably inspired and offer a brand new take on the original versions and most...well, are not.
One cant help but think that some of these songs could've been unforgettably remixed in the hands of others. But ah, such are the mysteries of the remix business or, should i say, the music's business as a whole.
Essentially, and not forgetting that Primal Scream remain an alternative band in all respects, this "Dirty Hits" should be a great opportunity to discover a band beyond the sun of MTV.
Four stars only because there is no lyrics included and with Primal Scream this is a major, major miss.

Now is the time for a Tuxedomoon revival! This is just a wonderfully evocative record. It still sounds fresh (to me, at least!) 20 years after its release. The blend of synthesizers and electronics with violin, saxophone, and bass guitar is something that nobody even attempts anymore.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars among Sherwood's finest work.......2001-08-26

Only dub fans like myself can truly appreciate the greatness of this album. This is a similar project to Mad Professor's dub deconstruction of Massive Attack's Protection. This is actually a superior effort to No Protection. The mastermind on Echo Dek is Adrian Sherwood (the prolific dubmaster behind African Head Charge, Creation Rebel, and Dub Syndicate), not the Scream. He takes the original Vanishing Point tracks and guts them, leaves a select few vocal snippets, amps up the drums and bass... in true DUB style. Highlights include "Last Train" (version of the classic "Trainspotting"), and the thunderous "Wise Blood" featuring vocals by the mighty Prince Far I. In most cases, the new versions improve on the originals. No disrespect to Primal Scream fans, but they wouldn't amount to much without great producers.

5 out of 5 stars Beyond.......2001-03-11

Forget those wretched Chill-Out compilations or Moby and the like, this is the real thing--a stern rebuke to the the Kenny G's of trip hop, downtempo electronica. "Echo Dek" is a very dark and trippy recording that practices at the altar of originality. I recommend it every chance I get to people who want enliven their cd collections...and are ready for it.

5 out of 5 stars Are you Kidding?!?!.......2000-08-13

I am gonna make this short and sweet. ANYONE who had ever been in that, i-am-too-messed-up-to-move, state of mind...would enjoy this CD. This CD stuns every Audio sensation in your entire body. Pop it in, sit down and just enjoy!! A must own, even for non 'Scream fans..

4 out of 5 stars Only for the hardcore fan.......1999-03-13

Echo Dek consists of remixes of "Vanishing Point". Some of the remixes are excellent, others merely good. But considering its 27 dollar price tag, most will be fine just owning the excellent Vanishing Point CD.

2 out of 5 stars .:,;.......2005-04-11

I knew right away when I heard the news about a collection with Primal Scream that it was going to be problem. The biggest problem is that the songs dont mix very well. One minute youre listening to Rolling Stone-type of rock, like "Movin on up", and some minutes later it's raw punk-rock like "Accelerator". Both songs are good but its not a very good combination. Im glad they skipped the first two albums because they would have made this collection even more unstable. Yet this might be a good place to start if you are not familiare with the band at all.

Another downside to this album is that a lot of the tracks have been edited and shortened in order to fit in more songs. That means that classic PS songs like "Loaded", "Come together", "Burning Wheel", "Swastika eyes", and "Kill all hippies" all have been more or less destroyed. But if youre not familiare with these songs you probably wont miss the parts that have been taken away.

None of the songs on this collection is straight out bad, but I dont see what songs like "Cry myself blind" and "Deep hit of morning sun" are doing on this album while other great songs are absent.

The bonus disc is a collection of old and new remixes. I had heard most of them before I bought the album so there where no surprises. Some of them seem very pointless. "Rocks" is pretty much the same as the original but with a harmonica added in the background. "Jailbird" is pretty much the same parts looped over and over again. "Higher than the orb" and "Some velvet morning" are longer than the originals but they both feel empty and pointless, as if they had just removed most of the instruments and looped what was left a couple of times. Instead of this bonus disc with mediocre remixes they should have had a disc with rare studio recordings like "Hammond connection", "96 tears", "How does it feel to belong", etc.

Personally I prefer listening to the ordinary albums. I recommend "Screamadelica", "Vanishing Point" and "Xtrmntr" for starters.

4 out of 5 stars almost perfect.......2005-02-09

If you want the ENTIRE Primal Scream story, this is not the place to look. The first 4 or so years of their career is completely unrepresented. Having said that, this is a nice package, in that it has all the "hits", a single-only remix or two, and a few choice album cuts. Especially rewarding is the bonus disc available as a limited edition which is made up entirely of rare-ish remixes. Fun to be had by all, I can assure you, as Primal Scream's music during the Nineties was literally all over the place. Trippy dub soundscapes, Stonesy rockers, gospel style rave-ups, and dance beats galore. Primal Scream might not have been the first group to successfully incorporate dance beats into guitar based rock music ( that would have been New Order, in my opinion ) but they did it with an undeniable enthusiasm and a quest for something just a little different. Very well done indeed. I docked this cd one point only because of the liner notes ( they are skeletal at best, as far as production, writing and mixing credits, and the "arty" cut up/essay/stream of conciousness ramblings are pretentious. ) Overall a nice, if incomplete effort.

4 out of 5 stars Very nearly perfect, though not entirely career-spanning..........2004-03-11

Nearly 20 years into their career, Primal Scream have finally released a proper greatest hits album. Everything you'd expect is present. My only disappointment is the band's continued non-acknowledgement of a clutch of early singles and two full-length albums that pre-date their full flowering on Screamadelica. While the band's early recordings show them reaching for self-definition, they created some very entertaining music. What should be added as prologue:
1.) The spiky jangle pop of early Creation single B-side "Velocity Girl"
2. & 3.) "Imperial" & "Gentle Tuesday" from the Byrds-worshipping debut album, 'Sonic Flower Groove'
4. & 5.) "Ivy Ivy Ivy" & "I'm Losing More Than I'll Ever Have" from 'Primal Scream.' The former encapsulates the band's appropriation of Rolling Stones posturing & MC5 riffage (a direction they reprised on 'Give Out But Don't Give Up'; and the latter is definitely a career highlight, a soulful, gospel-tinted potboiler of a tune that served as the basis for Andrew Weatherall's "Loaded," the song that single-handedly changed indie pop forever, which IS included on 'Dirty Hits.'

3 out of 5 stars Great Hits, So-So Sequencing.......2004-01-20

Why do greatest hits packages insist on sequencing tracks in chronological order? Is this blatant artist or record label laziness? Primal Scream's Dirty Hits is a case in point. These 18 tracks were `hits' elsewhere - the closest they came in the U.S. was their rave-era anthem "Come Together". Not even the Stones-y "Rocks Off" broke AOR. Instead, we get the progression of dance-happy Brits into acid-drenched pseudo-hippies into paranoid millennium progenitors of bleak electronica. That's an interesting development, sure, especially for those not familiar with PS's musical agenda, but a more interesting case could be made for Bobby Gillespie's dance marauders with a bit of inspired re-sequencing. I'd start with their creepiest, and slowest, musical works - "Higher Than the Sun" and "Long Life", then let `em rip with groove after warped groove, and ending with "(I'm Gonna) Cry Myself Blind", at which point you'll need a breather.

2 out of 5 stars Pretty Crummy Album.......2002-10-10

This isn't very good and I'm bummed that I shelled out the extra money to buy an import copy of it. I was really taken with their previous album, XTRMNTR, and the one before that, Vanishing Point, but as others have said, this album just seems to be treading water. It doesn't move their sound forward or challenge the listener. It does NOT sound like XTRMNTR, so save your money if that's what you're looking for. With all the talent and famous collaborators who put time in on this, I was sure expecting something more. If you must have this album, save your money and buy a used copy.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite album of 2002 so far........2002-09-10

When I first heard the album I found it to be very similar to "Xtrmntr". I adore every song on this album except "Space Blues No.2". Their two singles (Miss Lucifer & Autobahn 66) are some of the best songs they've ever made. However, I can't stop playing "The Lord Is My Shotgun" over and over again. It has some serious soul to it. He repeats Bang Yer Alive throughout the song like he kept repeating Sck Fck on "Pills".

This is a band who is on top of their game now. Since "Vanishing Point" they been on an impecable run (I won't count Echo Dek). When you have people in the album that were involved in four of the most important albums of all time (Psychocandy, Loveless, Screamadelica and Stone Roses) something good is gonna happen. A must buy, it may sound like "Xtrmntr" but it's one hell of a listen, very demanding album. Best of 2002. You can bank on it.

2 out of 5 stars Listen to Once, then Shelve.......2002-09-02

The Chemical Brothers, Death in Vegas, David Holmes. All had albums featuring Bobby G on guest vocals. All those cameos sound like Evil Heat.
Electro music as a genre has roughly 10 'noises'. You know, football clacker clicking noises, tinny metronomic percussion, hissy highhats. All have been embraced by the 'Scream, and boy do they sound dull.
Weatherall may well have been a super producer, but listen to his '9 o'clock drop' compilation to see where Evil Heat's sound originates from. Or indeed, the Sabres remix of 'Stuka'.
Buy if you liked 'Bow Down to the Exit Sign' by Holmes.

3 out of 5 stars TURN UP THE HEAT!.......2002-08-28

Several years have passed since XTRMNR, and now that Evil Heat has finally arrived, it doesn't feel quite as vital as it's predecessor. XTRMNR was a great album with some truelly jaw dropping moments such as Swastika Eyes, Accelerator and Shoot Speed/Kill Light. All classic songs, all produced and mixed in ways that sounded fresh, and their greatness seemed to surface after repeated listens. Like the album before that, the underated Vanishing Point, it was a real grower.

As for Evil Heat, well, there are scarceley any tracks on here that will be as awe inspiring as anything off those two albums. Obviousley, thats not the point. Primal Scream have always been about pushing the boundaries in music which climaxed with XTRMNR, and now that their duty has been done, they have every reason to pay tribute to themselves and to the music they love best- rock n' roll.

You could say that with each album the Scream have tried to capture a certain spirit in music, and with this, the spirit is rock n' roll. What makes this tribute so different and the reason why it actually works is because Primal Screams' (or mainly frontman Bobby Gillespie's) taste in rock n roll music is of the unique, real and uncompromised variety rather than the obvious (Oasis emulating the Beatles this is not). The result is a very dirty, sleazy and angry sounding record (not unlike the Stooges). There are tracks on here that are far more aggressive than anything on XTRMNTR (such as Rise, Detroit, Skull X and City) so if your worried that Primal Scream have wimped out, then think again.

Whereas XTRMNR had a well rounded set of songs with proper lyrical motivation (politics, the corruptancy of capitalism, the suffering of youth in the new world order) some of these feel like unfinished mixes of songs with no lyrical vitality that could have been so much better. The sonic envelope has still been pushed, but the melodies and deep substance of the songs is sadly missing (other than a few notable exceptions like Deep Hit of Morning Sun, Skull X and Space Blues #2). Still, a Primal Scream only half trying is far more intresting than any modern tradional rock band giving everything they've got and trying to be different, and Evil Heat...

2 out of 5 stars Not at their best........2002-08-26

I have been following the Primals from 'Screamadelica' onwards. While 'Vanishing point' had a cool '70's road movie soundtrack feel to it, and 'XTRMNTR' was more violent in it's MC5 by way of 'Road Warrior the Movie' vibe, 'Evil Heat' finds Gillespie and Co. treading water and maybe even moving to the shallow side. Long gone are the happy euphoric danceability of their finest moment 'Sreamadelica'. Even though that album's mastermind Andrew Weatherall lends talent to this new outing that feeling is barely present. 'Miss Lucifer' is an aggro industrial rant that shows some of the power of the groove that the 'Scream used to spit with regularity. Other tracks like 'Autobahn '66' could be spurted out by the most novice computer music-maker who has a jones for Kraftwerk. 'Rise' is the overhauled version of their controversial 'Bomb the Pentagon' they played live last summer. Anchored by a cool tribal native-American beat and Mani's bass, the rest sounds thrown together. 'City' appears here as it did on David Holmes ' Bow down to the exit sign', but it lacks the punch of that version. His scream at the intro is missing and it just sounds hurried through. Quit trying to be so punk in your recording. Your known for being more adventurous with your sound Bobby! 'The lord is my shotgun' has a cool guitar riff probably courtesy of Kevin Shields and some great harmonica by Robert Plant. Would pass as a great strippers tune in post-apocalyptic England. The best track on the album is 'Some velvet morning'. This old Lee Hazelwood song is infused with a minimalist electro beat and a swinging bass line. Bobby duets with Kate Moss (of heroin-chic super-model fame). And it makes you want to dance the seductive dance. The rest is all just either sub-par industrial-lite, poor kraftwerk-Neu impersonations, or half-thought out balladry. Buy the Singles, and hope that Bobby and Co. can give us a more consistent effort next time.
